ARTICLES TO BE INQVIRED OF IN THE VISITATION TO BE HAD in the bishopric of Norwyche, now vacant, in the fourth year of our most dread sovereign Lord Edward the sixth, by the grace of God king of England, France and Ireland, defender of the faith, and in earth of the church of England and also of Ireland, the supreme head, next and immediately under our saviour Christ: by the most Reverend father in God, Thomas archbishop of Cantorbery, primate of all England and Metropolitan. LONDINI, ANNO DOMINI M. D. XLIX. Articles to be inquired of. article I first, whether they have exhorted the people to obedience to the Kings majesty, and his ministers, and to use charity & love, one to an other article TWO Also, whether any preacher or any other person hath affirmed the ●ynges majesty, that now is, not to be a full king, or not to have his full power and authority in all things, during his tender age, or his subjects not to be bound to obey his laws made in the same age, as well as if he were thirty. or. xl. years of age. article III Item, whether your persons, vicar's and curates or ministers, do use only the Matins, Evensong, celebration of the lords supper, and administration of each of the Sacraments, and all other Common and open prayer, in such order and form, as is mentioned in the book of common prayer, of late set forth in english, and none other, or otherwise. article IIII ITEM, whether there be any that do preach, declare or speak any thing in the derogation or depraving of the said book of common prayer, or service of this Church of England, or against any thing therein contained, or of any part thereof. article V Also, whether any person or persons, what soever they be, do in any interludes, plays, songs, rhymes, or by any other open words, declare or speak any thing in the derogation, depraving, or despising the said book of Service. article VI Item, whether they have charged fathers and mothers, masters and governors of youth, to bring them up in some virtuous study or occupation article VII Item, whether such beneficed men as be lawfully absent from their benefices, do leave their cure to a rude and unlearned person, and not to an honest well learned and expert curate, which can and will teach you wholesome doctrine. article VIII Item, whether they have provided in every of their cures one book of the whole Bible of the largest volume, in english, and the Paraphrasis of Erasmuz also in english upon the Gospels, and set up the same in some convenient place in the Church, where their parisheoners may moste commodiousely resort to the same. article IX Item, whether they be common haunters and resorters to taverns or alehouses, giving themselves to drinking, riotting, or playing at unlawful games, and do not occupy themselves in the reading or hearing of some part of holy Scripture, or in some other godly exercise. article X Item, whether they have admitted any man to preach in their cures, not being lawfully licensed thereunto, or have refused or denied such to preach, as have been licensed accordingly, article XI Item, whether they have heretofore declared to their parishioners any thing to the extolling or setting forth of pilgrimages, relics, or Images, or lighting of candles, kissing, kneeling, decking of the same Images, or any such superstition, and have not openly recanted and reproved the same. article XII Item, whether they have one book or register safely kept, wherein they writ the day of every wedding, christening, and bur●yng. article XIII Item, whether they be resident upon their benefices, and keep hospitality or no, and if they be absent or keep no hospitality, whether they do make due distribution among the poor parysheoners or not. article XIIII Item, whether all manner proprietaries, persons, vicar's and clerks, having churches, chapels, or mansions, do keep their chancels, rectories, and all other houses appertaining to them, in due reparations. article XV Item, whether they have counseled or moved their parisheoners rather to pray in a tongue not known, then in english, or to put their trust in any prescribed numbered of prayers, as in saying over a numbered of beads, or other like. article XVI Also, whether they have bought their benefices, or come to them by fraud or deceit. article XVII Item, whether they have given open monition to their parisheoners to detect and present to their ordinary all adulterers and fornicators, and such men as have two wives living, and such women as have two husbands living, within their parishes. article XVIII Also, whether every parish have provided a strong chest for the poor men's box, and set and fastened the same near to the high altar. article XIX Item, whether they have diligently exhorted and moved their parishioners, and specially when they make their testaments, to give to the said poor men's box, to bestow the same upon the poor. article XX Item, whether you know any person within your parish, or else where, that is a letter of the word of God to be red in english, or sincerely preached, or of the execution of the kings majesties proceedings in matters of religion. article XXI Item, whether there be any other grammar taught in any school within this diocese, than that which is set forth by the kings majesty. article XXII Item, whether any have wilfully maintained and defended any heresies, errors, or false opinions contrary to the faith of Christ, and holy Scripture. article XXIII Item, whether any have committed adultery, fornication, or incest, or be common bawds, and receivers of such evil persons, or vehemently suspected of any of the premises. article XXIIII Item, whether any be brawlers, slanderers, chyders, scolders, and lours of discord between one person and an other. article XXV Item, whether you know any that use charms, sorcery, enchantments, witchcraft, soothsaying, or any like craft invented by the devil. article XXVI Item, whether any Inholders or alehouse keepers, do use commonly to sell meat and drink in the time of common prayer, preaching, reading of the Homilies or scripture. article XXVII Item, whether you know any executors or administrators of dead men's goods, which do not duly bestow such of the said goods, as were given and bequeathed, or appointed to be distributed among the poor people, repairing of high ways, finding of poor scholars, or marrying of poor maidens, or such other like charitable deeds. article XXVIII Item, whether you know any that speaketh against the baptism of children, or against the holy communion. article XXIX Item, whether ye know any that say, that the wickedness of the minister doth take away the effect of Christ is sacraments. article XXX Item, whether ye know any that say, that christian men can never be allowed to repentance, if they sin voluntarily after baptism. article XXXI Item, whether ye know any that affirm all things to be common, or that there ought to be no magistrates, gentlemen, or rich men, in christian realms. article XXXII Item, whether you know any that say, that christian men may not swear, or take an oath before a judge, or go to law one with an other: or may swear contrary to the truth. article XXXIII Item, whether ye know any that say, that private persons may make insurrections, uproars or sedition: or compel men by force or fear, to give them any of their goods. article XXXIIII Item, whether you know any that holdeth, that Christ did not take flesh and blood of the blessed virgin Mary. article XXXV Item, whether you know any that say, that. Magistrates may not punish by death notorious malefactors, or use any compulsion or war article XXXVI Item, whether every Sunday at the least, you have a communion in your parish church, according to the kings grace's book in that behalf, and if not, in whom is the default. article XXXVII Item, whether your minister do admit any notorious evil liver to the holy communion before the amendment of his naughty life, or any that is in malice, before reconciliation be had in that behalf. article XXXVIII Item, whether in the communion, preaching, or divine service time, any jangle, talk, walk or otherwise trouble or let the same. article XXXIX Item, whether once in six weeks at the least your ministers do here some children say the Catechism openly in the church of the holiday at after noon before evensong, according to the kings book in that behalf. article XL Item, whether any absent themselves from sermons, the reading of the Homilies, or other divine service in the church on holy days.
