LET not to pray alway, and stand not in fear to be reformed unto death, for the reward of God endureth for ever. Before thou prayest prepare thy soul, and be not as one that tempteth God. We must consider therefore when we pray in whose presence wee stand, to whom we speak, and what we desire. We stand in the presence of the almighty Creator of heaven and earth and al things therein contained. To whose eternal majesty innumerable thousands of angels do assist, serve, and obey. We speak unto him who knoweth the secrets of all hearts, before whom nothing is more odious then hypocrisy and dissimulation. We ought to ask those things which be most to his glory and the comfort of our conscience: We must therefore diligently with all reverent and godly fear endeavour ourselves to remove all such things as we offend his divine majesty in, to the uttermost of our power. And first, that we be free from all worldly cares and fleshly cogitations, whereby our mindes are carried hither and thether, and being drawn out of heaven, and from the pure beholding of God are pressed down to the earth. We must haue our hart not onely bent unto prayer, but as much as is possible lift up above itself, even to the purity that is worthy for God, wee must haue a regard that our mouth, spirit, and heart bee elevated together mindfully in faith. For God is a spirit, and willbe worshipped in spirit and truth, that is to say, in the godly affections of the hart, and with a true, faithful, and unfeigned worshipping. And therfore as at all other times he requireth the heart, so especially in the time of prayer, when we show ourselves in his presence, and enter into communication with him. Whervppon when he promiseth to hear all those that call upon him, he maketh a restraint, not to hear those which do not call upon him in truth. Seeing therefore the chiefest duty of prayer consisteth in the heart, we must wey our whole hart, and poure out our prayers unto God the searcher of hearts, with a sincere, unfeigned, and ardent affection before him, or else wee shall not find him. But if wee call upon him with a sincere faith, wee shalbe sure that he will hear our petitions. To whom be all honour, glory and praise for ever and ever. Amen. ¶ What prayer is. THere is no man but he knoweth that prayer is the chiefest thing that we may present God withall, for it is the head fountain, and spring of all goodness, and a mean to attain eternal life. For if any man be inflamed with the love of virginity, or studieth to embrace the honourable estate of chast wedlock, if any man labour to bridle anger, and to acquaint himself with sobriety and lowliness of mind, if any man desire to bee pure from the infecti●e and poisoned matter of envy: briefly if any man bee mindful of any other virtue what so ever it bee which helpeth to godly living, the same man( prayer being his guide & preparing the way of his life) shall right easily and prosperously obtain his godly intent and purpose. For it is impossible, it cannot be, I say, but such as ask of God purity, righteousness, meekness, goodness, and other virtues, must needs receive their desire & petitions. ask saith the lord, and it shalbe given you: seek & ye kall find, knock and it shalbe opened unto you. For whosoever asketh receiveth, and he that seeketh findeth, and to him that knocketh it shalbe opened. And again he saith, is there any amongst you which if his son ask him bread would offer him a ston? Or if he should ask him fish would offer him a Serpent? If ye thē which are evil can give your children good gifts, howe much more shall your Father which is in heaven give his holy spirit to them that ask it? with such sweet words, and with such hope hath the lord of all creatures provoked us to pray. And it becometh us, yea we are bound to be obedient to God, & to spend our whole life in the praises of him, that is in prayer, more earnestly setting our care howe to serve God, then how to continue the state of this our life. This doing, doubtless we shall live that life which onely beseemeth a Christian man to live. As the wise king Salomon saith: much prayer and the true service of god is a sign of all righteousness, for it is the spiritual ornament, yea the godly ornament that bringeth great beautits and comeliness to our mindes especially when one by it directeth his life, neither suffereth any uncomely thing to rule in his soul. For prayer teacheth to stand in reverent fear & awe of God, and to give the honour we owe unto him: prayer teacheth to cast of al the deceitful illusions of the evil spirit, and driveth a way all idle, filthy and uncomely thoughts, it stablisheth the mind in such perfection, that it contemneth all voluptuous and carnal pleasures, with a godly mind to disdain to be servant unto 'vice, and to preserve and keep the soul and mind in Christes freedom, in pure living and conversation of manners, it is comely to all such as profess Christ. I suppose therefore it is manifest to all men, that plainly it is impossible without the help of prayer, a man to live virtuously in this life, & in goodness to dispend his time, for howe can one live godly, except diligently and often he approach humbly, and upon his knees beg grace of him that giveth all goodness unto man. again how may it bee that any man can desire to be virtuous, modest, temperate, and righteous, if he covet not greedily the conversation and company of him, which is the giver not onely of these, but also of greater things then these be unto vs. Furthermore I will briefly declare, that although we be full of sin when we come to pray, yet doth faithful prayer right shortly purge us from it. What greater thing or more godly therfore can we haue then prayer, which is a sovereign medicine, and a most present remedy too every accrased soul? And for to approve this, the example of the ninivites doth come first to remembrance, in whom it is evident, by the help of prayer, they received forgiveness of those manifold wicked deeds, wherewith they had provoked the vengeance of God upon them: For as soon as they set their harts to prayer, it by & by brought righteousness unto them, & forthwith it amended the city, which of long time had been accustomend to Lecherous living, to excess, to malice, briefly to such a kind of life as was both souls & wretched, therfore prayer was a good preservative, for it speedily entreated the anger of God imminent vpon them, and forthwith amended their corrupt and detestable life. Such is the strength, such is the power of prayer, that where the Niniuits had wickedly & filthely passed al the dayes of their life, yet so sone as prayer was entred into the city, incontinently it turned all things vpsidowne, & brought in temperance, Iustice, love, unity, chati●ie, & all other goodness: as when a queen or Empres doth enter into a city, necessary all wealth & abundance doth follow hir. even so truly after prayer doth come to the foul of man, all virtues do enter with it jointly. For as the foundation is in a house, the same is prayer in the soul. And when wee haue first fastened it as a roote, ground or stay in the soul, then must wee diligently build vpon it cleanesse, meekness, iustice, charity, briefly all the laws of Christ. To whom with the father, & the holy ghost, be glory and dominion for ever. So be it. A brief confession to be said before the morning prayer. I do aclowledge and confess unto thee O merciful father, my often and grievous offences, that I haue committed against thy divine majesty from my youth hitherto, in thought, word and deed, leaving undone those good deeds which I ought to haue done, and doing those things which I ought not to haue done. Whereby I haue provoked thy wrath and indignation against me, and thus lamenting my wickedness, I appeal unto thy mercy, and say with the publican, O God be merciful unto me most wretched sinner, forgive all that is past, save & defend me from evil, and confirm me in godly life: to the honour and glory of thy name. So be it. Our father which art in. &c. And led us not into. &c. But deliver us from evil. Amen. PRay we our father lovingly, which gently us preserved: When we forsook him wretchedly And death by sin deserved. His mercy was so bounteous, That though we from him fel, Freely in Christ pardonned us: Redeeming us from Hell. Glory be to the trinity, Father son & spirit living: Which art one god & persons three Who praised be without ending Morning Prayer O Lord open thou my lips, that my mouth may speak and show forth, that which is to thy glory and praise, and shut my mouth for speaking any thing whereby I should offend thy divine majesty, or be hurtful to my neighbour. O God make speed to save us, O lord make hast to help vs. Glory be to the father. &c. As it was in the be, &c. praise ye the Lord. Thanks be to God. ¶ Psalms. O lord hear my words, mark my crying, O my king and my God, for unto thee only do I come to pray, neither do I look for succour any where elles but of thee. O Lord I beseech thee that thy grace may spring in my hart, with the morrow light of comfort, the night of care being overpassed. Suffer me not to perish with the ungodly folk whom thou cursest, I come running unto thee not trusting in mine own righteousness, but unto thy great and manifold mercies. O Lord with the rule of thy iustice thou shalt direct us, for thy names sake make plain the way before me, least the spirit of malice turn me thence. Let them be wise which repose themselves & trust alway on thy mercies, let them triumph which love thy name. Defend me( O Lord) with thy grace as with ashielde in time of peril, to the intent that when I am assaulted with them, I may yet with constant cheer grow up unto my full perfection. Glory be to the father. &c. As it was in the begin. &c THe Lord shal defend me under his wings, and I shalbe safe under his feathers: his faithfulness and truth shalbe my shieled and buckler. I shall not be afraid for any terror by night, nor for the arrow that flieth by day, nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness, nor for the sickness that destroyeth in the noon day. O sand out thy light and thy truth( O GOD) that they may led me and bring me to thy holy Hill and to thy dwelling. Why art thou so heavy( O my soul?) and why art thou so disquieted within me? O put thy trust in God, for I will yet give him thankes, which is the help of my countenance and my God. O God thou art my God, early will I seek thee, my soul thirsteth after thee: my flesh also longeth after thee: as long as I live will I magnifiie thee, and lift up my hands in thy name. I haue remembered thee in my bed, and thought vpon thee when I was waking, because thou hast been my helper. Haue mercy upon me O lord, thou God of all things, haue respect unto us, and show us the light of thy mercy, and sand us thy fear. Awake thou my soul that sléepest, and stand up from death, and Christ shall give thee the light of his mercies. O let me haue thy loving kindness, O lord betimes in the morning, for in thee is my trust: show thou me the way that I should walk in, for I lift up my soul unto thee deliver me lord from mine enemies for I fly unto thee to hid me. Teach me to do the thing that pleaseth thee, for thou art my God. O Lord haue mercy upon us: we haue put our whole trust in thee. Be an arm to us early and our health in time of trouble. unto thee( O Lord) will I lift up my soul, my God, I haue put my trust in thee. O let me not be ashamed, show me thy ways O lord, and teach me thy paths. led me forth in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation. Call to remembrance( O lord) thy tender mercies, and thy loving kindness which haue been ever of old. O remember not the sins and offences of my youth, but according unto thy mercy think vpon me, O lord, for thy goodness. For thy names sake, O Lord be merciful unto my sin for it is great. look vpon mine adversity and misery, and forgive me all my sin. O keep my soul and deliver me, let me never be confounded, for I haue put my trust in thee. God be merciful unto us and blfsse us: and show us the light of his countenance and be merciful unto vs. That thy way may be known vpon earth, thy saving health among all nations. God even our own God shall give us his blessing, GOD shall bless us and all the ends of the world shall fear him. show the light of thy countenance vpon thy servant, and teach me thy statutes. Watch( my soul) because thou knowest not what hour the lord will come. Watch( my soul and pray) that thou enter not in to temptation: for the spirit is ready, but the flesh is weak. Watch( my soul) and pray: stand fast in the faith: quiter thee manly, be strong, let all thy business be done with love, through Iesus Christ our lord and saviour. Set a watch O lord, before my mouth, and keep the door of my lips, O let not my heart be inclined to any evil thing, let me not be occupied in ungodly works. hearken unto my prayer O Lord, that goeth not out of feigned lips. O hold thou up my goinges in thy path, that my footsteps slip not, incline thine ear unto me, and hear my words. show thy mauelous loving kindness, thou that art the saviour of them that put their trust in thee. From such as resist thy right hand, keep me as the apple of an eye, hid me under the shadow of thy wings from the ungodly that trouble me. I will sing of thy power and will praise thy mercy betimes in the morning, for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble. unto thee, O my strength will I sing: for thou, O God, art my refuge, and my merciful God. Teach me thy way,, O lord, and I will walk in thy truth. O knit my heart unto thee, that it may fear thy name. I will thank thee O Lord, my God with all my heart, and will praise thy name for ever. Thou O Lord God full of compassion and mercy, long suffering plenteous in goodness and truth, turn thee unto me, and haue mercy upon me. Ponder my words O Lord, consider my meditation. O hearken thou to the voice of my calling, my king and my God: for unto thee will I make my prayer My voice shalt thou hear betimes( O Lord,) early in the morning will I direct my prayers unto thee, and will look up. For thou art the GOD that hath no pleasure in wickedness, neither shall any evil dwell with thee. led me O Lord, in thy righteousness: make my ways plain before thy face. Teach me thy way, O lord, and led me in the right way. Order my steps, O Lord in thy word, and so shall no wickedness haue dominion over me. O deliver me from the wrongful dealings of men, and so shal I keep thy commandments. Vouchsafe O Lord, this day to keep us without sin. O Lord, thou Father and God of my life, forsake me not. O let me not haue a proud look, but turn away al voluptuousness from me. Take from me the lusts of the body: Let not the desires of uncleanness take hold upon me, and give me not over into an unshamefast and obstinate mind. Two things haue I required of thee, that thou wilt not deny me before I die. remove from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches, only grant me a necessary living. Least if I be too full, I deny thee, and say: who is the Lord? And least I being constrained through poverty, fall unto stealinge, and take the name of my God in vain. O that my ways were made so direct, that I might keep thy statutes, so shall I not be confounded while I haue respect unto all thy commandments. Take from me the way of lying, and cause thou me to make much of thy law. O turn away mine eyes least they behold vanity, and quicken thou me in thy way. Let thy loving mercy come also unto me, O Lord, even thy salvation, according to thy word. O take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, for my hope is in thy judgements. My flesh trembleth for fear of thee, and I am afraid of thy judgements. hear my voice O Lord according unto thy loving kindness: quicken me according as thou art wont. Least my leaves( which is my words and works) should fade and fall away, but that al things may prosper, whatsoever I shall do in thy name. Assist me I beseech thee, and grant O most merciful Father, that for Iesus Christes sake, I may take roote in the ground of life, least with the ungodly like chaff and dust, I be blown abroad with the most pernicious wind of this world, & grant that I may stand in the assemble of the righteous & that I may enter into iudgement without punishment, & that I may escape everlasting damnation. O lord Iesus Christ unto whom and before whom al things ar manifest & plain, which sufferest not a sparrow to light on the ground without thy providence, and which in times past by thy holy spirit didst guide our forefathers Abraham, Jsaac, and Jacob, in thy paths and ways. Against the going of the young Toby into a strange country diddest provide thy angel and messenger to be his guide, grant me this day most wretched sinner, whom by thy word thou dost encourage to call upon thee in all time of need and necessities that I may haue thy holy spirit, to direct my paths and ways this day, that I may walk according to thy godly will and pleasure, profit of my neighbour, and glory of thy name, which livest and reignest, world without end. Amen. For Friday a morning prayer. O merciful Lord God & heavenly Father, I render most high lauds praise and thankes unto thee, that thou hast preserved me both this night and all the time and dayes of my life hitherto under thy protection, and hast suffered me to live unto this present hour. I beseech thee heartily that thou wilt vouchsafe to reserve me this day, & the residue of my whole life from henceforth into thy tuition, ruling and governing me with thy holy spirit, that all maner of darkness, of misbelief, infidelity, carnal lusts, and affection, may bee utterly chased and driven out of my heart, and that I may bee justified and saved both, body & soul through a right and a perfect faith, and so walk in the light of thy most godly truth, to thy glory and praise, and to the profit and furtherance of my neighbour: thorw Iesus Christ our lord and saviour. Amen. For saturday a morning prayer. O heavenly Father, which like a diligent watchman, attendest always upon thy faithful people, whether they wake or sleep: and mightily defendest them, not only from satan that old enemy of mankind, but also from all other their aduersaries, so that through thy godly power they bee harmless preserved. I most heartily thank thee, that it hath pleased thy goodness, so to take care upon me thy unprofitable servant this night past, that thou hast both safely kept me from al mine enemies, and also given me sweet sleep, unto the great comfort of my body, I most entirely beseech thee most merciful and sweet father, to show the like kindness towards me this day, in preserving my body and soul. that as my enemies may haue no power over me, so I like wise may neither think, breath speak or do any thing the may be dipleasant to thy fatherly goodness, daungerous to my soul, or hurtful to my neighbour: but that all mine enterprises may be agreeable unto thy most blessed will, which is alway good and godly, doing that may advance thy glory answer to my vocation, and profit to my neighbour, whom 〈◇〉 ought to love as myself: that when so ever thou callest me from this vale of misery I may be found the child, not of darkness, but of light, & so for ever reign with thee in glory, which art the true & everlasting light, to whom with thy dearly beloved son Iesus Christ our alone saviour, and the holy Ghost that most sweet comforter, bee all honour and glory. Amen. A general morning prayer. O Almighty God our heavenly Father, I confess that I am miserable and wretched sinner, and haue manifold ways most grievously transgressed thy most godly and blessed commandments, through wicked thoughts, ungodly lusts, sinful works and deeds, all my whole life. In sin was I born and conceived, and there is no goodness in me, in as much as if thou shouldeste enter into thy narrow iudgment with me judging me according unto the same, I were never able to suffer or abide it, but must needs perish and be damned for ever, so little help, comfort or succour is there in me or in any other sinful creature, onely this is my comfort O heavenly father that thou didst not spare thy onely beloved son, but diddest give him up unto the most bitter, most vile, and slanderous death of the cross for me, that he might so pay the ransom for my sins, satisfy thy iudgment still, and pacify thy wrath, reconcile me unto thee again and purchase me thy grace and favour, & everlasting life. wherefore through the merites of his most bitter passion, and thorough this innocent blood shedding I beseech thee O heavenly Father, that thou wilt vouchsafe to be gracious and merciful unto me, to pardon and forgive me all my sins, to lighten my heart with thy holy spirit, to renew, confirm and strengthen me with a right and a perfect faith, and to inflame me in love towards thee and my neighbour, that. I may henceforth with a willing and a glad hart walk as it becometh me, in thy most godly & blessed commaundemetns and so glorify and praise thee everlastingly, and also that I may with a free confidence and a quiet hart in all maner of temptations, afflictions, or necessities, and even in the very pangs of death, cry boldly and faithfully unto thee and say: J believe in God the father almighty maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his onely son our Lord. &c. But O Lord God heavenly Father to comfort myself in afflictio●●nd temptations with these Articles of the Christian faith, it is not in my power, for faith is thy gift. For as much as thou wilt be prayed unto and called upon for it, I come unto thee, to pray and beseech thee both for that and for all my other necessities, even as thy dearly beloved son our saviour Iesus hath himself taught us, and from the very bosom of my hart I cry and say. O our either which art in heaven. Hallowed bee thy name. Thy kingdom come. &c. A general confession unto God daily to be said. O Most merciful lord God, and most tender and dear father, vouchsafe I heartily beseech thee, to look down with thy fatherly eyes uf pity upon me most vile and wretched sinner, which lieth here prostrate in heart before the feet of thy bottomless mercy, O father, in so much that I am no more worthy to be called thy son. Yet nevertheless, forasmuch as thou art the God and Father of all comfort, and again desirest not the death of a sinner, but like a true samaritan takest thought for my séely wounded soul: make me I pray thee by infounding thy precious oil of comfort into my wounds, joyfully to run with the lost son unto the lap of thine everlasting pity. For lo thou art my hope and trust, in whom I onely repose myself, having in thee full confidence and faith, I may say with a very faith full heart, trusting in thy mercy. I believe in thee O God the father, in thee O God the son. and in thee O god the holy ghost, three persons one true & everliving God besides whom I knowledge none other God in heaven above, nor in earth beneath Yea and I poor sinner do accuse myself unto thee, dear Father, that I haue sore and grievously offended thy almighty goodness and majesty, in the committing of mine exceeding grievous & manifold sins & wretchedness, for I haue not kept the lest of thy most godly & blessed commandments, like as the righteousness may require and demand the same of me. I haue( I say) not honoured thee like my God, nor dread thee like my Lord, loved thee like my Father, trusted in thee like m creator, and my saviour. Thy holy and dreadful name, unto whom all glory and honour belongeth, haue I used in vain, I followed the great Prince of this world satan, which hath been a liar from the beginning, in concupiscence of the flesh, in pride of living in lying, in covetousness, in gluttony in hatred, in envy, in backbitinge, in despair and all misbelefe. But in what maner soever that I haue offended and sinned against thy eternal majesty for no man knoweth thoroughly his sins, as thy Prophet witnessteh. whether it hath been by day or else be night, yea even from my childhod unto this day, were it in works, words, or thoughts, secretly or openly. O my merciful God, I am sorry for it even from the very bottom of my heart, how be it, in token of great repentance, though al harts be known well enough unto thee, I do knock & strike my breast, & say in bitterness of hart and soule-Lord God & father haue mercy, lord god and son haue mercy, lord God and holy ghost haue mercy. Spare me of thine infinite mercy dear Lord now and all the dayes of my life, and let me haue part of thine abundant grace, so as I may change my sinful life and put out of me the old man with all his concupiscence, and also that I may die unto the world, & that the world may be unto me a cross, and so go forth in a new life. Strengthen me O lord in a true humble hart in perfect love hope and trust in thee. give my soul grace onely to desire to rejoice, & repose myself in thee, and that I may utterly renounce and forsake the vain affiaunce of this world, so that thou mayest find me ready with the good seruant, in the midnyght of death, which shall suddenly steal upon me like a- thief ere I be a ware. Be thou to me at that time of need, O lord, a tower of strength, a place of refuge, and defensible God, namely against the face of the féende, who like a roaring Lion shal be then most ready to devour me, and against desperation which then shal be busy to grieve me. Let then thy comfort, clean fast unto me, thy mercy keep me, & thy grace guide me. Fetch then again lord God Father that which thy puissant might hath shapen. Fetch then again lord god son, that which thou hast so wisely governed & bought with thy precious blood. Take again then lord God holy ghost, that which thou hast kept and preserved so lovingly in this region of sin and vale of misery, three persons and on vepy God, unto whom bee praise and honour for ever, and ever. Amen. A prayer unto God the Father. OMnipotent, and merciful God the Father eternal, which dost not nispise a sinner béewaylinge with a contrite heart for offending thy hight majesty, I pray thee by thy grace too draw me nere unto thee, to hear my prayers, and to forgive me my offences, to comfort me in afflictions and forgive lord them that opresse me, and that my ghostly enemy haue no power too deuouere me, as he desireth, but that I may strongly. withstand his fraud and snares too my comfort, that I may die in thy true faith, & rest with thee in thy everlasting kingdom. Amen. An intercession and prayer unto our saviour Jesu Christ. O Most merciful Iesu my sweet saviour & most gracious Lord God, I thank thee highly, for that thou hast created and made me of nought, and for thy manifold benefits & graces that thou hast given unto me here in this world: before many other, not only preserving me from all vile and loathsome sickness, from shane & many msfortunes but also giuing to me( most unworthy) many good great and excellent gifts. All which gifts most sweet Iesus, I wot verily and knowledge meekly, cometh of thy goodness onely, and nothing of my deserving. Wherefore most mighty Lord God my creator, my redeemer, & most merciful saviour Iesu Christ, which when we were lost thou bought and redemedst us again with thine own most precious blood, haue mercy on me most unworthy wretch, which haue committed & done many great sins & trespasses against thy merciful goodness, and haue misspent thy gifts of grace that thou so lovingly diddest give me, and so vngently behaved myself to thee, that surely I am much unworthy to be called thy son, yet most beninge Iesu thou art so bonntifull of thy mercy and pity, that notwithstanding mine unkindness towards thee, yet during my life, I will put all my whole trust and confidence in thy mercy. For thou commandest( I wot) to cry & call vpon he, that thou thereby mightst haue occasion to give unto us thy most gracious gifts. wherefore most glorious Iesu, which forsakest no sinner, but gladly receivest to thy mercy all them that will méekly call for it. give me ever grace to dread thee, love thee, and to serve thee with all my hart and mind, with al my will and reason, with all my might, power, and strength of body and soul, and grant me good lord, that of all my acts & deeds done to thy will & pleasure, I may render all the honour and praysings unto thee, as to whom of very duty it belongeth: and now I béesech thee gracious lord of thine infinite mercy, let all my misspent life in times past be forgotten béefore thee, that I haue consumed and spent very evil, & sand me good Lord perseverance of virtuous living, that I may now from henceforth order my life here in this world too thy pleasure. First with contrition too make a pure & clean confession. Also my sweet saviour grant me time and space that I may receive thy blessed body and blood under the form of bread and wine, to my comfort or I depart out of this world in clean life, for the comfort and salvation of my sinful soul. And most merciful Lord Iesu I pray thee too preserve me from sudden death, and sand me my right mind at my departing with steadfast faith, very true hope and fervent charity: And most sweet Lord Iesu Christ give me now thy merciful aid and grace to pursue and follow always thy will and commandments, and so too eschew mine own frail will and desires and the revels false enticements, so that in thy sight I may appear to be( as I am name) thy son & a true christian man, and after this present life I may come to the sight of thy most glorious face in heaven. Amen. We worship thee O Christ with praise and benediction: For thou redemedst the world through thy blessed passion. Another prayer unto our saviour Iesus Christ, called Conditor Coeli. OH maker of heaven and earth, King of kings, and Lord of lords, which of nothing didst make me to thy image and likeness, & didst redeem me with thine own precious blood whom I a sinner am not worthy to name, neither with my heart to think upon, humbly I desire thee, and méekly pray thee, that gently thou do behold me thy wicked servant and haue mercy on me, which hadst mercy on the woman of Canane and Mary Magdalene, which didst forgive the publican, the thief hanging on the cross. unto thee I confess most holy father my sins, which if I would I cannot hid from thee, haue mercy on me Christ, for I a wretch haue sore offended thee in pride, in covetousness, in gluttony, in lechery, in vain glory, in hatred, in envy, in adultery, in sporting, in dissolute & wanton laughing, in idle words, in hearing, in tastinge, in touching, in thinking, in sleeping, in working, and always in which I frail man and most wretched sinner might sin. Therfore I most humbly pray and beseech thy gentleness, which for my health descendest from heaven, which didst hold up david, that he should not fall in to sin, haue mercy on us O Christ, the which didst forgive Peter that did forsake thee. Thou art my creator and my helper, my maker, my redeemer, my governor, my father, my Lord, my God, & my king. Thou art my hope, my trust, my governor, my help, my strength, my defence, my redemption, my life, my health, and my resurrection. Thou art my steadfastness, my refuge or succour, my light and help, I most humbly and heartily desire and pray thee help me, defend me, make me strong & comfort me, make me steadfast, make me merry, give me light and visit me, revive me again which am dead. For I am thy making & thy work, O lord, despise me not. I am thy servant, thy bondman, although evil, although unworthy and a sinner. But whatsoever I am, whether I be good or bad, I am ever thine, therefore to whom shall I fly, except I fly unto thee, if thou cast me of, who shall or will receive me? if thou despise me, & turn thy face from me, who shall look vpon me and recognize me? If I be vile & unclean, thou canst make me clean, If I be sick, thou canst heal me. If I be dead and butted thou canst revive me, for thy mercy is much more then mine iniquity, thou canst forgive more then I can offend. Therefore O lord, do not consider nor haue respect to the number of my sins, but according to the greatness of thy mercy, forgive me, and haue mercy on me, most wretched sinner. Say unto my soul, I am thy health: O be not angry with me, I pray thee most meek Father for thy great mercy, I most humbly beseech thee, that thou bring me to the bliss that never shall cease. Amen. A prayer necessary to be said at all times. O bountiful jesv, O sweet saviour, O Christ the son of GOD haue pity upon me, mercifully hear me, and despise not my prayers, thou hast created me of nothing, thou hast redeemed me from the bondage of sin, death, and Hell, neither with gold nor silver, but with thy most precious body once offered upon the cross, and thine own blood shed once for all for my ransom: therefore cast me not away, whom thou by thy great wisdom hast made: despise me not whom thou hast redeemed with such a precious treasure: nor let my wickedness destroy that which thy goodness hath builded. now while I live O Iesu haue mercy on me, for if I die out of thy favour, it willbe to late afterward to call for thy mercy, whiles I haue time to repent look upon me with thy merciful eyes as thou didst vouchsafe to look upon Peter thine Apostle, that I may bewail my sinful life, and obtain thy favour and die therein, I reknowledge that if thou shouldst deal with me according to very Iustice, I haue deserved everlasting death. Therefore I appeal to thy high throne of mercy, trusting to obtain Gods favour, not for my merites, but for thy merites, O Iesu, who hast given thyself an acceptable sacrifice to thy Father, to appease his wrath, and to bring all sinners( truly repenting and amending their evil life) into his favour again. Accept me O lord, among the number of them that shall be saved, forgive me my sins, give me grace to load a godly and innocent life, grant me thy heavenly wisdom: inspire my heart with faith, hope and charity, give me grace to be humble in prosperity, patient in adversity, obedient to my rulers, faithful unto them that trust me, dealing truly with all men, to live chastened in wedlock, to abhor adultery, fornication, and all uncleanness: to do good after my power unto all men, to hurt no man, that thy name may be glorified in me during this present life, and that I afterward may obtain everlasting life, through thy mercy, and the merites of thy Passion. Amen. A prayer of Manasses King of Juda. O Lord almighty, God of our Fathers Abraham Jsaac and Jacob, and of the just seed of them: which hast made heaven and earth, with all the ornaments therof, which hast ordained the Sea by the word of thy commandments, which hast shut up the deep, and hast sealed it for thy fearful and laudable name, dread of all men, and honourable before thy face and power. Thy fierce anger of threatening is above measure heavy to sinners, but the mercy of thy promise is great and unsearchable, for thou art the Lord God most, high above all the earth, long suffering, and exceeding merciful, and sorry for the malice of men. I haue provoked thine anger, and haue done evil afore thee, in committing abominations & multiplyinge of offences. And now I bow the knees of my heart requiring goodness of thee O lord, I haue sinned Lord, I haue sinned, and known my wickedness, I defy thee by prayer, O Lord forgive me: O lord forgive me and destroy me not with mine iniquities, neither do thou alway remember my evils, to punish them, but save me( which am unworthy) after thy great mercy, and I will praise thee everlastingly, all the dayes of my life: for all the powers of heaven praise thee, and to thee belongeth glory, world without end. Amen. A devout prayer to our Lord God. O Lord which hast vouchsafed of thy unspeakable goodness, to make me, & ordain me thy creature to live in this transitory life, giuing me a reasonable soul, by the which I know thee to be my Lord, my God, and my maker, which I may well perceive by the visible sight of thy wonderful works: as by heaven, the earth, and the Creatures in them contained, with the commodities that wee daily receive by them at thy hand, which declareth the great love that thou hadst in our first creation, and also they do express and declare to us, thee to be onely God and Lord over all, and that ther is none above thee, and that there is no wisdom, knowledge, power, or strength of value besides thee, yet also thou knowing our necessary need of thy help, of thy most loving gentleness hast not disdained to say to me and to al other by thine own most blessed word, to the great comfort of all mankind: ask & it shalbe given, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shal be opened unto you. Furthermore most familiarly thou hast said, if we that be evil can give unto our children when they ask, good things: how much more thē shall our heavenly Father give an holy spirit to them that earnestly desire it: O most comfortable saying, O most blessed lord, I wretched sinner do ask at thy hand mercy and grace, and do confess me to be the most wicked and abominable sinner in thy sight, most weak of all other to stand in thy truth, most frail to fall, & to break thy holy commandments, by the keeping of which we are known to be thy true seruants, and by nothing elles. O most merciful lord God I knowledge myself daily to break the same, but where I haue thus offended thy divine majesty. I humbly ask of thee mercy and forgiveness, being in will never hereafter to offend in the same. And Lord for the sure performance of the same, I humbly ask and desire thy strength to make me stand fast in faith, thy knowledge to work thy blessed will, thy power to resist all error and wicked imaginations, thy wisdom to know the truth, for I confess and know( O lord) that all worldly wit, policy, knowledge & strength is but foolishness in thy sight. Therfore I ask and continually crave( good lord) thy help, and most humbly desire that thy holy spirit may guide and rule all the imaginations thoughts, and desires of my heart, so that it may be thy spiritual heart, & not my fleshly hart, for the most perfect amongst men( lacking thy wisdom) shall not be regarded. For the thoughts of mortal men are miserable, and our forecastes are uncertain. And why? this corruptible body is so heavy to my soul, that it keepeth down my understanding, that it museth most on vain things. Therefore( good Lord) I beseech thee comfort my sick soul, that it may walk in thy laws and ways, and work thy will. And Lord like as thou knowest the secrets of my heart, and the desires of the same, and that I would most earnestly walk in thy truth, and work in the works of the same truth, so Lord I beseech thee refresh my soul according to thy merciful calling, where thou sayest. Come to me all that labour and are laden( and lowly of heart and you shal find rest to your souls) and I shall refresh you. O Lord I miserable sinner labour in acceptable ways, my good will and desire swerveth not from thee, but is bent towards thee, & like as thou knowest the same to be unfeigned, so Lord refresh me with thy merciful grace, that I may be steadfast in thy true faith, & that I may be always obedient unto thy laws & commandments, & that I may never serve from the holy & most blessed ordinance of thy catholic Church, but that I may use them, receive them, and honour thee in them, according unto thy most holy will and pleasure, as in things which thou hast left to declare thy love unto us, & to assure our hope, & to exercise our faith, that it should not be idle nor wavering, for all things are possible to thee, though they seem never so unpossible to vs. O most loving Father, I know that by my sins, I am not worthy thy blessed comfort, but Lord thou hast said, that in what hour soever a sinner doth repent of his sins, thou wouldest no more remember them, and also thou wouldest not despise the sighinge of a contrite hart, which maketh me bold to trust in thy mercy, and meekly call to thee for grace and help in this troublesone time of temptation, and tryinge of our faith. I am as one laden with ignorance, not knowing the height of thy high mysteries. nor the deceitful déepenes of the crafty and subtle arguments and persuasions of my ghostly enemies which daily do assault my simplo soul, and so burdeneth the same that it can find no rest. Therefore( O Lord) like as thou knowest my will and hearty desire is to serve thee and to live and die in thy perfect faith: so lord I beseech thee never suffer the subtle persuasions contrary to thy truth, to take place or roote in my hart. But like Lord as thou hast created my heart, and given me a will to order the same, so Lord I most meekly yield the famed again into thy hands, desiring thee by thy holy spirit, so to direct my ways, words, & works, that they may be acceptable in thy sight. And Lord suffer not my soul to perish which thou hast bought so dearly with thy most precious blood, for the which great mercy sake haue mercy on me, and make me poor in spirit and low of heart, & content with my vocation, submittinge me wholly into thy hands, so that my desire may be to thy will and pleasure so that I may haue no other trust but onely in thee which art all trust itself and none besides thee, & grant my poor soul rest in thee, for thou hast said, they shall never be confounded that put their trust in thee, which trust lord grant me never to forsake, for any vain trust or temptation, or tribulation, that may happen to vex my poor soul, but grant me thy holy spirit to comforter defend me from all things that should procure thy displeasure. As thou art in trinity one God and Lord over all, which livest & reignest in the world of worlds, to whom be all honour, glory, and praise for ever. Amen. A prayer that we may haue the fear of God before our eyes in all our doings. O almighty & everlasting God, thy holy word teacheth us, that thou art not only a father, but also a lord. not onely a forgiuer, but also a revenger, not onely a saviour, but also a judge. And as thou being a Father, a forgiuer, a saviour, dost pardon and show mercy, so thou being a lord, a revenger, a judge, punnishest & condemnest. Neither doth thy holy scripture only set forth unto us a gospel, which comforteth us, quickeneth us, sheweth us merry tidings, forgiveth our sins, quieteth our consciences, and bringeth unto us everlasting life, but also a lawe which reproveth, accuseth, condemneth us, woundeth and sleieth our consciences, yea and throweth us down headlong into the deep dungion of Hell. And as thy holy gospel lifteth us up, and maketh us merry with the hope of remission and forgiveness of our sins, so doth the Lawe pluck us down, and almost drive us unto desperation for fear of thy plagues and everlasting punishments, so that we may not onely love thee as a father, a forgiuer, a saviour, but also fear thee as a Lord, a revenger, a judge. Forasmuch therfore( O most gentle saviour & most righteous judge) as nothing doth so mightily put away sin, and make us to walk in the way of thy commandments, as reverently to fear thee, and to stand in awe of thy iudgment & heavy displeasure. We most entirely pray thee to give us the fear which thou requirest of us in holy scriptures and thereunto thou hast promised so many large & bounteous benefits that we may not onely love thee as a saviour, honour thee as a Father, but also reverence thee as a Lord, fear thee as a judge. O Lord all things are open to thy eyes, neither is any thing hide from thee, which seest the very secrets, and most inward thoughts of our harts: give us therfore grace that in all our enterprises, wee ever set thy fear before our eyes, and so stand in awe of thee, and of thy righteous events, that we attempt nothing, whereby we should provoke thy heavy displeasure against us, but so walk in thy fear and in thy ordinances, that we may at all times love thee as a saviour, honour thee as a father, reverence thee as a Lord, & fear thee as a judge, so shall it come too pass that we reverently fearing thee as a child doth his father, shall not only avoid al such evils as might make thee our heavy Lord & fierce judge, but also embrace those virtues, which shall both evidently declare our faithful love, true honour, unfeigned reverence, & humble fear towards thee, and also make thee our loving father, & most merciful saviour thorough Iesus christ our Lord. Amen. A prayer called Aue Rex. hail heavenly King father of mercy, our life, our sweetness, our hope, all hail: unto thee do we cry, which are the banished children of eve, unto thee do we sigh, weeping & wailing in the vale of lamentation, come of therfore our advocate, cast vpon us those merciful eyes of thine, and after this our banishment show to us the glorious light in thy heavenly kingdom. O merciful, O holy, O sweet saviour. In all our troubles and heaviness, O Iesu our health and glory: succour vs. Amen. A prayer for all Christians. O almighty, everlasting God, and most gracious déere loving father. I beseech thee for IESVS Christes sake, thy most déere and only son, to haue mercy, pity and compassion upon me most vile wretched and miserable sinner, whose innumerable offences both old and new, be most horrible, grievous, and great, where through I haue justly deserved thy grievous wrath & euerlastlng damnation. But now good Lord, here I do appeal to thy great mercy onely, which far surmounteth all thy works, as thou hast promised the same in thy holy and unfallible word, where thou hast said, yea & sworn as truly as thou livest, that thou wouldest not the death of a sinner, but rather that he should convert and live. O déere lord, I confess that I am a great and a grievous sinner, and yet now by thy grace and good working of thy holy spirit something turned unto thee. O let me live, and not die the everlasting death of the soul, which I haue so deeply deserved, but make me a vessel of thy great mercy, that I may live and praise thy name among thy chosen children for ever. O let not my horrible sins separate me from the sweet sight of thy majesty, but let thy great power & mercy be magnified in me, as it is in david, in Peter, in Magdalen, & in the notable thief which was crucified with christ thy dear son, in whose most precious death and bloudsheding only O Lord, I put my whole trust and confidence. For he only hath taken away the sins of the world, he came not to condemn the world, but to save it, that none which truly believe in him should perish, but haue life everlasting, he saith he came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. O gracious god give me true, hearty, earnest, and unfeigned repentance, tha, I may from the very bottom of my hart continually lament my manifold sins and wickedness, my great ingratitude and unthankfulness towards thee for al thy merciful benefits so abundantly poured upon me clothe IESVS Christ which wouldest vouchsafe, he being thy own onely dear beloved son in whom was and is al thy whole pleasure & delight, to give him for me to the veri death of the cross, yea and that when I was thine utter enemy of mercy inestimable and love incomprehensible, who ever saw such a thing? God became man, and was crucified for me, that by his death I might live. Alas, that ever I should become so wicked a a wretch and so unkind a creature to dispelase so loving, kind, and merciful a God, and father, O forgive me, forgive me for thy great mercies sake, far thy truth and promise sake, and I will never trespass again against thy divine majesty any more, but will gladly serve thee in true holiness and righteousness all the daies of my life, by the grace and assistance of thy good and holy spirit, the which I beseech thee to give me also that he may govern me, and guide my hart in thy true faith, fear and love, that in all my works, words, & thoughts. I may glorify thy holy name, which livest & reignest one GOD in three persons, to whom be al honour glory, praise, thanks, power, rule and dominion, for ever and ever. Amen. A prayer for the obtaining of a good life. O heavenly Father, God almighty, maker of heaven and earth and al things contained in them. I beseech thee that thou wilt vouchsafe of thy goodness to direct, sanctify and keep my hart and body, my fences, my doings my talk and communication in thy holy laws, and in the works of thy commandments: and that thy holy angel may be with me, to direct my feet into the way of peace, truth and health, that I may deserve to bee whole, safe and free, in thee and by thee, both here & in the world to come. Thou the art the saviour of the world and king of glory, here me & save me, which livest and reignest god in perfect unity world with out end. Amen. A fruttfull meditation not to be said with the mouth lightly, but to be cried with hart and mind oft and mightily. O Most excellent goodness, withdraw not thy mercy, O most mighty maker, despise not thy work, O most prudent redeemer, suffer not to perish the price of thy redemption, O most gentle ghostly and heavenly host & saviour, purify, save dress & keep thy house and dwelling place: the which thou sanctifiedst and dedicatedst to thee in the sacrament of baptism, O most blessed Iesu, O most charitable Iesu, O most sweet Iesu, O most bounteous Iesu, O most excellent Iesu, O most glorious Iesu, O most innocent Iesu, O most merciful Iesu, O most meek Iesu, O most loving Iesu, O most déere Iesu, haue mercy on me. When shal I love thee? when shall I be sorry and contrite for my sins? when shall I turn to thee by grace? when shall I remember thy benefits, thy meekness, thy poverty and thy painful and bitter passion, thy patience, thy obedience, thy love and thy charity? When shall I sanctify, worship, magnify, and love heartily thee, thy sainctes, and thy feasts, that is to say, thine incarnation, resurrection, and ascention, & such other, with due reverence & devotion: if thou be most dreadful, where is my dread O Iesu? if thou be the most loving Father, where is my love? If thou be my Lord and Redeemer, where is my service? If thou be mine host, and dwell in my soul by thy grace and mercy, where is my chastity & cleans according to such an host? If thou be the life of sainctes, the fairness and beauty of angels, where is my thankinge? now, therfore good lord, Iesu christ, wound my heart with thy most holy wounds, moist my mind with thy most precious blood, that whether so ever I turn me. I may behold about me thee crucified, and what soever I see, it may appear to me ruddye with thy most holy blood, that thus thee beholding, I may fix my sight in nothing but onely in thee, which lyuest and reignest GOD world without end. Amen. ¶ Before the receiuinge of the Communion say thus. O Lord although I be not worthy to receive thee into the house of my soul, for mine innumerable offences and sins done against thy great goodness, yet trusting( good Lord) in thy great pity and infinite mercy: I come to receive thy blessed body, as a sick creature to thee, that art the health of life, unclean too thee that art the well of mercy, blind by ignorance too thee that art the light euerlastng, needy of grace and power in virtue to thee that art the king of heaven & earth, naked of good works to thee that art the author of grace. I come as awretch to thee my Lord and maker al desolate and comfortless to thee my help & succour, for besides thee there is no consolation. I come as a sinner to thee, that art the mediator and mean between God and man, I come as a caitiff to thee my most merciful saviour, I come all sinful to thee the granter of remission & pardon, dead by sin to thee the restorer of life, evil too thee that art all goodness, hard hearted to be relieved by the infusion of thy superabundaunt grace desiring thee meekly to heal mine infirmity and sickness, to wash away my sin and filthiness, too lighten my blindness, too reduce me too the right way where I am out thereof, to comfort me desolat of goodness. Haue mercy on my wretchdnesse, pardon my sinfulness, give me the light of grace thus buried in sin, thyt I may receive thee the food of Angels, the king of glory, the Lord of al lords with such chastity of body, with such pureness and cleans of soul, with such contrition of heart and abundance of weeping tears, with such spiritual joy and gladness, with such dread and reverence, with such faith, hope and charity, with such obedience and humility, with such love, devotion, faithfulness, and thankfulness, as it is beséeminge for such a lord to be received, and to my soul most expedient. And be not displeased good lord that I a sinner with an unclean hart & polluted mind come hither this day to receive thy precious body in sacramental bread and wine, but remember merciful Lord that thou refusedst not the sinful Magdalene being penitent, from the kissinge of thy blessed feet. And in likewise despise me not, ne put thou me away as unworthy from the receiving of thy body in the blessed Sacrament, for my sins and unkindness, but grant thou me compunction of heart, plenty of weeping tears to wash my sins and wickedness, so that with a pure heart and clean conscience, I may this day receive the Sacrament to my souls health, that I may obtain and possess thereby everlasting life with all holy sainctes in heauens glory, and in this present life with thy holy spirit to be replenished, & never to admit other lover besides thee grant me blessed Iesu so for to receive the sacrament of bread and wine that I may be worthy to be accounted for a member of thy mystical body here in earth, and though as yet I be not worthy to be numbered among the simplest & lowest of thy servants, but rather to be reject and outcast for my sinfulness, yet good lord of thine infinite power thou mayst make me equal & like to the merits of thine elect and chosen seruants. Come thou Father of fatherless, come comfort of comfortless come and cleanse my soul from al contagiousnes of sin, for it is not convenient and according, there to be any uncleanness, where thou the spouse of virginal chastity should come in and dwell. Come and apparel my soul with such ornaments of virtue and grace, that it may delight thee therein to abide And as thou disdaynest not to touch the sore Lippers with thy Holy hands, so good lord vouchsafe to anoint my simplo soul with the ointment of remission and pardon, that in this life by steadfast hope, firm faith. and perfect charity, I may so increase in virtue from day to day, that I may obtain to the glorious fruition of thy Godhead, in the Kingdom of heaven where I may see thee face to face, world without end. Amen. ¶ After the receiving of the Communion say this. J thank thee good lord of thine infinite goodness, that thou this day hast fed me with thy body and blood in the sacrament, desiring thee meekly, that this sacrament which I haue received, may be to me a purgation & cleansing of my sins, fortitude, and a spiritual strength against my frayeltie, and sure defence against worldly troubles & adversity, a purchasinge of grace and pardon, a medicine of life, and a continual remembrance of thy blessed passion, so that in the way it may conduct and guide me, and when I am out of the way, it may reduce me, when I scumble it may uphold me, & when I am falling it may raise me, so that by good continuance in thy will, to everlasting glory it may bring me, and so to order the tallage and taste of my heart, that I never feel other sweetness but thee, that I never seek other lover but thee, nor none other comfort besides thee, so that I care for none other delight but thee, so that I care for none other honour but thine. And give me such a perfect love towards thee, wherewith I may come to as great merit in heaven as though I had spent all my life dayes in the remembrance of thy blessed passion, and graciously deliver me from all tribulation of body & soul, captivity, anguish, and perils, and all Christian people. Amen. A godly prayer to be said by all women at their purification or Churching, and at all other times after. O almighty and merciful father, which of thy bonteous goodness hast made my womb fruitful, and of thy gracious blessing hast created in me a reasonable creature, I most heartily thank thee, not onely for this thy gracious gift, but also for that thou hast at all times since I conceived, preserved me from all perils both of soul and body, hast so moderated all my nippes, pinches, throws, and pangs, that I haue hitherto right well escaped them, I knowledge( O Lord) that justly for our transgression of thy commandments, thou saidst to the first woman, and in her to all vs. I will increase thy sorrow, when thou art with child, with pain shalt thou bring forth thy children. All our pains therfore that we suffer in this behalf, are none other thing, but a worthy cross and punishment laid upon us by thy ordinance, to the which with hart & mind I humbly submit me, trusting surely and being fully persuaded in my faith, that thou callest none unto peril & danger, but both thou canst and wilt at convenient time deliver them. Thou most gracious God hast commanded us in all our trouble. to call upon thee for aid and help, and not only hast commanded us, but also of thi merciful goodness, hast promised us good deliverance saying: call vpon me in the day of tribulation. and I will deliver thee. O good lord how greatly do these words comfort my heart and sustain my sely soul. Who would not greatly rejoice that knoweth certainly almighty GOD to bee present with him in his trouble Saith not god thus unto al us that are thy people? Before they call( saith he) I shall answer them, while they are yet but thinking how to speak, I shall hear them yea, I am with them in their trouble, out of the which I will deliver them. What comfortable Lord is this? He is more ready to help, then we to call for help, he is more ready to give grace, then we to ask it. There was never one yet that faithfully asked grace of this lord, but he had it, ask saith Christ and ye shall haue. every one that asketh, hath: what so ever you shall ask my father in my name, he shall give it unto you, our saviour Christ saith this & he is God, and shall not I hearken to my Lord Gods commandment, and promise? verily I will stick surely unto it: for sure I am, that sooner shall heaven & earth perish thē gods promise be vnperfourmed. For albeit every man naturally is a liar and a deceiver, yet is God alway true and just in all his words and promises I will therfore make my suit unto him, whom I need not go far to seek, for he is every where present with his elect, and as the holy scripture saith: He is nigh unto al that call upon him faithfully: & thus will I say unto him: Father of mercy & God of all comfort & consolation, I thy poor handmaiden humbly beseech thee for Christ Iesus sake, and in his blessed & holy name, that thou wilt vouchsafe to forgive me all my sins & trespasses wherein I haue heretofore offended thy godly majesty, either in thought, consent, delectation, word, or deed, and that thou wilt hereafter during my life, mercifullye preserve me from the transgression of thy commandments, and daily increase in me perfect repentance for my sins, a sure purpose of amendment of my life, and diligent study to walk in thy commandments. increase in me also a lively faith, a sure hope, an ardent and loving charity, enfeoff in me humbleness of heart, meekness of mind, cleanness of conscience. grant that I may be wise, sad, sober, discréete, circumspectly, & well advised, in all my sayings and doings, and that I may strongly overcome all the temptations of mine enemies the devill, the world, and the flesh, and that whether I be sleeping, waking, eating, drinking, or whatsoever I do, all may be to thine honour and glory. grant also that I may humbly reverence & faithfully love my husband, and be obedient to all his honest, lawful, and godly requests, and chiefly of all grant me( O Lord) that I may fear and dread thee, for well assured I am, that look how high the heaven is in comparison of the earth, so great is gods mercy toward them that fear him. look how wide the East is from the West, so far hath he set our sins from us, yea like as a Father pitieth his own children, even so is the lord merciful to them that fear him. And as touching my deliverance of my burden and thy gracious gift, I am right well assured that unless thou hadst prospered my travell, al womens help and all physic had been in vain, but my full trust is, that like as thou hast created this child in me, and didst breath into it the spirit of life, so at such time as it seemed most meet to thy godly majesty, thou as thou couldst best, didst mercifully prosper the childes birth and my deliverance. In consideration whereof, I humbly beseech thee of thy fatherly pity to strengthen me always in such a daungerous labour and travell, and so sustain me that I may patiently bear all my throws and pangs, and according to thy promise, suffer me not to be tempted above my strength, but in the midst of my tentation, make a way for me to come out, that I may bear it. Increase in me faith( O most merciful saviour Christ) that I may constantly believe thy word which sayest, ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shalbe turned into joy. A woman when shée traueleth hath sorrow, for her hour is come, but when she is delivered of the child, she thinketh no more of the anguish, for ioy that a man is born into the world. I beseech thee therfore, in the daungerous time of my travell, grant me speedy deliverance and joyful beholding of my child, that I being a mother may render unto thee honour, laud, & thanks for thy abundant mercy and gracious gifts, and benefits. And finally above all things I beseech thy gracious goodness to due my child with grace that it may be one of the number of thine elect, baptized and regenerate in the holy ghost, that at the years of discretion, it may learn to know thee, and knowing thee, may trust surely to thy mercy, trusting in thy mercy, may heartily love thee, loving thee, may fear to displease thee, fearing to displease thee, may walk and continue in the obedience of thy commandments, and so to attain the everlasting joy and felicity through our lord Iesus christ, which liveth and reigneth with thee and the holy ghost world with out end. Amen. ¶ Prayers of the Passion of our saviour Jesus Christ. Blessed be the Father, and the son, and the holy Ghost: Let us praise him and exalt him world without end. almighty God, our heavenly father, thy mercy and goodness is infinite and without measure. It is thy mercy and no goodness that was in us, which moved thee to sand into the world thine onely begotten eternal son to take our nature vpon him, and therein to work the mystery of our redemption and salvation, according as thou hadst appointed, and hadst spoken before by the mouths of all thy Prophetes which were from the beginning. Also it was thy blessed will, thy mercy & goodness towards us, that thy heavenly son did suffer persecution, trouble and adversity, betrayed of his own friend and disciple Judas, was traitorously taken & carried away, falsely accused and unjustly condemned, cruelly beate, and scourged, and finally with most scornful rebukes put to the most painful and shameful death that could be devised. All this O heavenly Father, was done through thy mercy & blessed will for our sakes, not onely to answer and satisfy thy just wrath and anger which we haue deserved. both for the offences of our first parentes, and yet daily do deserve by transgressing thy holy commandments: but also to restore us again unto thy grace & favour, to due us with thy heavenly gifts, that we might serve thee in holiness and righteousness all the dayes of our life. And finally to make us by the free benefit of thy dearly beloved sons passion and the price of his most precious blood, partners with him of his infinite and unspeakable glory and bliss in heaven. Wherefore O heavenly father we beseech thee, poure upon us thine holy spirit, and make us in our harts clearly to see & most steadfastly to believe this thine infinite gracious goodness, shewed and given unto us by thine own son our saviour Iesus Christ, & with this belief make us to put all our confidence and hope of salvation in him, whom thou hast appoynted to be our only redeemer and saviour. Make us alway to render unto thee most humble and hearty thanks for thine incomprehensible mercy and goodness towards vs. Finally, make us to possess the death of thy dearly beloved son in renouncing and forsaking all sin, that we may plainly appear to rise with him in newness of life, in righteousness, innocency, and all true holiness, and after this life to reign with him in everlasting glory. hear us our heavenly father, for our lord Iesus Christes sake. Amen. An other. almighty God our heavenly father, we beseech thy gracious goodness, that likewise as thy onely begotten and dearly beloved son our saviour Iesus Christ according to his blessed will, suffered willingly death and bitter passion for our redemption and salvation, having therof for sight and certain knowledge: So in like maner whensoever it shall be thy pleasure, to lay like cross and affliction vpon our backs that we may also willingly and patiently bear it, to the true trial of our faith against the latter day, & to everlasting glory. hear us our heavenly Father for our Lord Iesus Christes sake. Amen. An other. our saviour and redeemer Iesus christ, which in the last supper with thine Apostles didst consecrate thy blessed body and blood under the form of bread and wine: grant us we beseech thee, ever steadfastly to believe and kindly to aclowledge thy infinite and almighty power, thi incomprehensible love toward us, & that we may alway woorthely receive the same blessed Sacrament according to thy holy ordinance: that thereby wee may obtain increase of al godliness in unity of spirit, with thee our head and by thee and thy spirit with al the company of them that be truly thine. Which be thy spiritual and mystical body, and our spiritual and Christian brethren: Hear us our saviour Christ for thy names sake. A prayer before ye go to bed. O lord, which art onely good, true, gracious, and merciful, which commandest them that love thy name to cast fear and care from them, and to cast it upon thee, promising most mercifully thyself to be their protector from their enemies, their refuge in danger, their governor in the day, their sight in darkness, and their watchman on the night also, never to sleep, but to watch continually for the preserving of thy faithful. I beseech thee of thy bountiful goodness( O lord, to forgive me wherein I haue offended thee this day, and to receive me under thy protection this night, that I may rest in quietness both of body and soul. grant mine eyes sleep but let mine heart watch perpetually unto thee, that the weakness of the flesh cause me not to offend my Lord let me at all times feel thy goodness toward me, that I be at all times stirred to praise thee: Late and early, and at mid day thy praise be in my mouth, and at midnight lord instruct me in thy iudgments that all the whole course of my life being led in holiness and purity, I may be induct at last into the everlasting rest, which thou hast promised by thy mercy to them that obey thy word( O lord) to whom be honour, praise and glory for ever. Amen, A godly prayer to desire the life to come. THis my body is the very dark and filthy prison of my soul, this world is an exile and a banishment, this life is care and misery: but where thou art O lord, there is the very country of liberty & everlasting blessedness: stir our mindes now & then to remember so great felicity: power into our hartes a desire of such precious things, & of al things most to be desired, give quietness to our mind, and grant that we may haue some taste of everlasting joys, whereby these things of the world may see me filthy, and be lothfull unto us which we seek for so earnestly & so greedily, and receive so surely, that we may, refuse and despise these bitter and filthy things, and most fervently desire the sweetness of thy familiariti in the which all goodness is contained. To thee be glory for ever. Amen. A prayer to be said by them that be at the departure of any Christian man or woman. O lord God almighty the father, the son, and the holy ghost, three persons and one only God, the Lord of life, and the destroyer of death, with whom to be is life, and from whom to be is death, who as a loving Father, merciful redeemer, and friendly caller to repentance, hast now visited with the scourge of sickness, thy most sinful son, yea thy spotted servant and grievous sinner, W. H. to cause him to know himself, and to confess his wickedness, & so to come to thee at this thy calling, to know thee, and only to cry and call upon thee for comfort. Now O thou Lord, whose property is ever to haue mercy, and freely to forgive those that faithfully come unto thee. We with heavy harts now humbly beseech thee look down from heaven with thy accustomend eyes of compassion upon him. Cast behind thy back his innumerable and grievous sins, throw them from him as far as is the East from the West, yea scrape the memory of them out of thy sight: quiter forget thē, and freely for give thou him as his onely trust is in thee. O lord be thou unto him at his most time of need, a tower of strength, a place of refuge, and a defensible God to keep, strengthen, and defend him from the danger of the devill, now readiest to dispuiet and destroy him, against desperation now busiest to grove him, against death now likeliest to strike him, and against Hell now gaping to devour him. O heavenly Father, aid thou now him, help him, & establish him in his firm faith of thy truth. Comfort him now O Christ, and continue him in the knowledge of thee his onely saviour, which art now( in his extreamenes) ready to show thyself unto him as his saviour, crucified on the cross to comfort him: therfore now save thou him from sin, deliver thou him from eternal death, hale him from hel, embrace him, hid him in the holes of thy wounds as thy dear dove, & bear his manifold sins on thy back. And O holy spirit strengthen thou now his weak spirit against satan, that standeth now nigh him to seduce him. Say thou now to satan, away satan, & command thy holy Angels now to aid him. Let thy comfort cleave fast unto him, thy mercy keep him, and thy grace guide him, O almighty God the giver of all health, and if it be thy good will to lengthen his dayes in this life, to spare him for a season, to ease him of his pains, & so to restore him to his former health as thou heretofore didst restore that thy penitent Prince Hezechia, that he thereby may once again visit thy holy temple, to thy honour and glory, and the commodity and comfort of us thy Christians, we joyfully say, thy will be done, not ours. But if it be not so thy will but that he according to his daily desire) must now needs depart & go the way of all flesh, then, O thou Lord, ( in whose hands are the harts of all flesh) arm him( we humbly beseech thee) with thy perpetual peace, patience, and perfect confidence on thee: increase his faith, help his unbelief, anoint him with the oil of gladness in thee, ease him of his pains, be thou nigh to him, and drive the devill far from him, aid him with thy holy angels, giuing him grace so quietly to to take this thy fatherly visitation in worth that in this his painful life, yea and in the end therof he with perfect memory and sure trust,( commending himself wholly to thee) may in hart joyfully still say, and we his faithful friends for him as followeth. Fetch now again lord God Father into thy holy hands that which thy puysaunte might hath shapen: command thy holy angels now to aid him, and safely to bring him to thee. And now place thou him amongst thy chosen Children and blessed heirs in thy eternal kingdom prepared for them that are written in thy book of life. Fetch now again lord God son, that which thou of thy more mercy hast so wisely governed & bought with thy precious blood, now joyfully receive him, and say unto him as unto the penitent thief, this day shalt thou be with me in Paradise. Take again now lord God holy ghost, that which thou of thy onely favour hast lovingly kept and guided in this region of sin & vale of misery. And now lovingly led thou him with Lazarus to eternal ioy and rest. This grant him O holy trinity good God almighty three persons and one very God, unto whom be all honour praise & glory for ever and ever. Amen. A prayer to be said at the hour of death. O lord Iesu, which art the onely health of all men living, and the everlasting life of them which die in thy faith, I wretched sinner give and submit myself wholly unto thy most blessed will, being assured that the thing can not perish which is committed unto thy mercy. O Lord give me grace that willingly I may leave this frail and wicked flesh in hope of the resurrection, which in better wise shall restore it to me again. I beseech thee most merciful lord Iesus Christ, that thou wilt by thy grace make strong my soul against all temptations, and that thou wilt cover and defend me with the buckler of thy mercy against all the assaults of the devill. I see and knowledge that there is in myself no hope of salvation, but all my confidence, hope & trust, is in thy most merciful goodness, I haue no merites nor good works, which I may allege before thee, of my sins and evil works( alas) I see a great heap, but through thy mercy I trust to be in the number of them, to whom thou wilt not impute their sins but take and accept me for righteous and just, and to be the inheritor of everlasting life. Thou merciful LORD wast born for my sake, thou didst suffer both hunger and thirst for my sake, thou didst preach and teach, thou didst pray and fast for my sake, thou didst all good works and deeds for my sake, thou sufferedst most grievous pains and torments for my sake, and finally, thou gavest thy most precious body to die, and thy blood to be shed on the cross for my sake. Now most merciful saviour, let all these things profit me, which thou so freely hast given me that hast given thyself for me. Let thy blood cleanse and wash away the spots and foulness of my sins. Let thy righteousness hid and cover mine unrighteousness, let the merits of thy passion and blood be a satisfaction for my sins. give me Lord thy grace that my faith & salvation in thy blood waver not in me, but ever be firm and constant, that the hope of thy mercy and life everlasting never decay in me, that charity wax not cold in me, finally that the weakness of my flesh be not overcome with fear of death. grant me merciful saviour, that when death hath shut up the eyes of my body, yet that the eyes of my soul may still behold & look upon thee, that when death hath taken away the use of my tongue and speech, yet that my hart may cry and say unto thee In manus tuas domine commendo spiritum meum, that is to say: O Lord into thy hands I give and commit my soul. Domine Iesu accipe spiritum meum. lord Iesu receive my soul unto thee Amen ¶ A thanksgiving unto God for all his benefits. WE most heartily thank thee( O Lord God our heavenly Father) for thy manifold and inestimable benefits, which thou hast given unto us both for our body and soul, yea and freely of thine own goodness without our desert. we thank thee that it hath pleased thee of thy great mercy, first to create and make us according to thine own Image and likeness, and to place us in thy joyful paradise where wee should haue continually remained in a blessed and a quiet state, if through the subtle and deceitful suggestions of satan our old enemy, we had not transgressed thy holy commandments. We thank also thee( O most gentle father) for thy loving kindness which thou haddest to us, when we were all perished & lost, through the sin of our first Father Adam, for when thou mightest justly haue condemned us, & cast us into perpetual damnation, thou like a Father of singular great love, hadst pity on us, and sauedst us by the death & passion of thy well-beloved son our lord and saviour Iesus Christ, which gave himself a ransom for all our sins, and paid a sufficient price by his precious blood, for all the wickedness that we at any time heretofore haue committed through our frailty and weakness, so that we repent, believe, and amend. neither wast thou thus contented that he onely should die for our sins, but also didst raise him up again for our justification, and to make us righteous in thy sight. moreover after that he had shewed himself unfeignedly to live to his Apostles, by manifest and evident tokens certain times after his resurrection, thorough the power of his Godhead, he ascended up into heaven, perfect God, & perfect man, where he now sitteth on the right hand, & maketh entercession for us being our alone mediator and advocate, from thence we look for him to come again at the day of judgement, not as a cruel judge to condemn and cast us away, but as a most loving lord and gentle saviour to carry us with him unto everlasting glory, there worlds without end to remain in such joys, as the eye hath not seen, nor ear hath not heard, nor yet is any heart able to think. For these thy most bounteous gifts, and for all other thy benefits which thou daily givest to us of thy great mercy, both for our body and soul, we heartily thanket thee most gentle and merciful Father, beseeching thee that thou wilt give us grace through thy holy spirit not to be unthankful, but to walk worthy of this thy kindness, and so too béehaue ourselves in all our life time in this wretched world according to thy holy will, that at the last day we may be found in the number of them, to whom thy onely begotten son shall say: Come ye blessed of my Father, possess the kingdom which was prepared for you from the beginning of the world, lord let it come to pass. Amen. certain prayers to God the father taken out of S. Augustine. LOrd my GOD give unto my heart to desire thee, in desiring thee, to seek thee, in seeking thee, to find thee, in finding thee, to love thee, in loving thee, to make me free from mine offences, and when I haue redeemed them, no more to commit them again. give Lord GOD unto my heart repentance, my spirit contrition, mine eyes the fountain of tears, and to my hands abundance of giving of alms. Put out in me O God my King the desire of the flesh, and kindle in me the fire of thy love. O thou my redeemer thrust out of me the spirit of pride, and grant me mercifully the spirit of humility. O God my saviour, take away from me the fury of anger, and give me gently the buckler of patience. O God my creator, pluck away from me the rancour and pleasure of the mind, and give meekly the sweetness of the soul. give me most gentle Father steadfast faith, sure hope and continual charity. O God my ruler, turn away fro me vanity, vnconstantnes of mind, wantonness of the body, fifteens of talk, high looking, excess in filling the belly, evil speaking of my neighbours, the grievous sin of backbiting, the itching of curiosity, the covetousness of riches, greediness to rule, desire, vainglory, the evil of hypocrisy, the 'vice of flatieringe, despising of the poor, oppressing the weak vnlaciable avarice, rusty envy, and deadly blasphemy. O God my maker, cut away in me undecent rashness, stubbornness, unquietness, idleness, sluggishness, sloth of mind, dullness, blindness of hart, obstinacy of understanding, cruelness of conditions, disobedience of that which is good, repugninge against good council, not br●dling of my tongue, taking the goods of the poor as a pray, doing violence to the weak, slandering the innocent, neglecting my inferiors, too much sharp toward mine household, evil affection towards my friends, & hardness unto my neighbours. O my God, mercy I desire of thee for thy well-beloved sons sake, give me the works of mercy, and the affections of pity, to suffer with them that bee afflicted, to give counsel to them which err, to help the miserable, to succour the needy, to comfort the sad, to raise up them that be oppressed, to refresh the poor, to mone them that weep, to forgive my debtors, to spare them which offend against me, to love them that hate me, to render good for evil, to despise no man, but honour al men, to imitate good men, and beware of evil men, to embrace virtues, to reject vices, in adversity patience, in prosperity ꝯtinence, the keeping of my mouth and as it were an hatch before the door of my lips, to tread under foot al earthly things, and thirst after heavenly things. An other. LO lord my fashioner, I haue asked many things, and yet haue not deserved a few. I confess, alas, I confess that not only those gifts which I require be not due unto me, but in the stede of them most grievous punishments: yet do the Publicans, harlots, and thieves comfort me, which being pulled even in a moment of time out of the laws of the enemy, are received into the bosom of the shepherd, for thou O God, which art the maker of all things, although thou bee marvelous in all thy works, yet art thou thought to bee more marvelous in the works of pity. wherefore thou saidst of thyself by one of thy servants: His mercies are above all his works, and that which thou spakest as of one, wee believe that thou speakest of all thy people. I will not utterly take my mercy away from him: for thou dispisest no man, thou castest away no man, thou abhorrest no man, except peradventure any man madly abhorreth thee. Then thou being angry strikest not, but givest also gifts to them which provoke thee, if they will ask them. O my God the glory of my salvation, and my defender, I unhappy wretch haue stirred thee up I haue done evil before thee I haue provoked thy displeasure, I haue deserved thine anger, I haue sinned & thou hast suffered me, I haue offended & yet thou sustaynest me: If I repent, thou sparest me, if I return to thee, thou receivest me: yea and besides al this, whiles I defer from time to time, thou tarriest for me. Thou callest me again wandring from thee, thou biddest me come, striuinge against thee, thou lookest for me, which sluggishly lieth still, thou embracest me coming again, thou teachest me being ignorant, thou comfortest me lamenting, thou raisest me up from ruin, after my fall thou repairest me, thou givest unto me when I ask, thou art found when I seek thee, & openest when I knock for thee: Lo lord the God of my health, I can not tell what I shall set against thee. I know not what to answer, there is no place to flee from thee, nor any den to be hidden from thee, thou hast shewed unto me the way to live well, and hast given me knowledge how to go: thou hast threatened unto me hell, and hast promised me the glory of Paradise. now O Father of mercy and God of al consolation, strike through my flesh with thy fear, that with fearing I may escape those things which thou thratenest, and give me the comfort of thy salvation, that in loving I may perceive those things which thou promisest, O LORD which art my strength, my sure rock, my God, my refuge and my deliverer: tell me what I should think of thee, teach me with what words I should call upon thee, and the works wherewith I may please thee. I know one thing wherewith thou art pleased, and an other which thou despisest not, for a broken spirit is unto thee a sacrifice, and an humble and sorry heart is accepted unto thee. O my God, my helper, make me rich with those gifts, defend me with these municions against the enemy, give me this cover from the flames of vices, and spread abroad this merciful refuge for the passions of desires. grant LORD the strength of my salvation, that I be not of the number of them that believe for a time, & in the time of tentation shrink away: shadow over my head in the day of battle, my hope in the day of affliction, & health in time of tribulation. Lo lord the light and my salvation, I haue asked those things which I need, I haue remembered those things which I fear. But my conscience gnaweth me, & the secrets of my heart reprehend me and that which love ministereth, fear scatereth, zeal provoketh me, fear blameth me, for my deeds bring in fear, but thy gentleness sure trust in thee thy goodness exhorteth me, my naughtiness slaketh me, and to confess the truth, the fantasies of vices come unto memory, which beateth down the boldness of mindes which do presume. ¶ Graces to be used before and after meales. Grace before meat. AL things in this world, are nothing else but vanity, And great are the number, that are oppressed with misery. Be loving therfore unto them, And mercy to all show: For when the death approacheth nere our heads shall lye full low. Then will it be for you to late, mercy for to haue: If that you turn your ears away, when that the poor do crave. Cease not therfore to do thē good, while that you here remain: For they are bought with Christes blood and that shalbe their gain. To God alone be laud & praise, whose children we be all: Thy mercy Lord is our defence, now hear us when we call. Good save his Church. &c. Grace after meat. OF dives and Lazarus the Scripture saith plain, How thone lived in wealth, the other in great pain, dives was well clothed, and did fare of the best: But the poor man for hunger, could never haue his rest. Full of fores he lay crying at the gate to be refreshed. with the cromes of the table which no man him delivered. Thus perished poor Lazarus and that for la●ke of food: And so did this glutton also for all his worldly good. All ye here present remember this right well, How this miserable man is butted now in hell. From the which place of torment God us all deliver: And grant us to be merciful, while that we live together. Then shal we reign with Lazarus in joys which be incomparable, By the only blood of Iesus christ whose death to us is profitable Now let us therfore altogether, even with one consent: Desire of God our heavenly father our sins for to repent. God save his Church. &c. Grace before meate. our heavenly father hath promised the little birds to feed, Much more, we his people dear to help us at our need. If that we do his kingdom seek, and not therein be slack: For if we do he will us bear, and some time make us lack, O lord for thy great mercies sake grant us our petition: And suffer not thy little flock, to come unto confusion. But shortly them deliver, out of their enemies hand: And whither it be by life or death in thy truth for to stand. Now bless these thy onely gifts, this table throughout: And of our salvation laid up in Christ of that we haue no doubt. O lordsend us both peace & plenty, if it be thy godly will: So that thou with us, & we with thee, may bide in favour still. God save his Church. &c. Grace after meat. THe time cometh saith the lord that a dearth I will sand: Except my people do repent, and so their lives amend. And it shall not be the hunger, of bread, drink, and meat: But only to hear the word of god which most men do forget. From the cast to the west they shal go. with hearts full of heaviness, And shal not find the Lord because of their unthankfulness. Behold here what our sins haue done we must it needs confess: But when thy will & pleasure is, Lord sand us a redress. And suffer not thy people thus, marvelously to perish: But sand to them such heavenly feed as may their souls nourish. Now let us praise thy holy name, with heart tongue, and pen: and that it may shortly come to pass all ye here say Amen. This after every Grace. GOD save his Church, and keep it from thrall. And bless our queen and her subiects all. That she may long live to his glory and praise, In virtuous studies to spend her dayes. Here godly to rule Her commen wealth: To the increase of honour and her souls health. FINIS. ¶ Here beginneth The table.
