A Godly New short treatyfe instructing every parson, how they should trade their lives in the imitation of Virtue/ and the showing of vice, & declaring also what benefit man hath received by christ, through the effusion of his most precious blood. Imprinted At London by me Robert Stoughton. Dwelling with in Ludgate, at the sign of the bishops Mitre. Grace mercy and peace of conscience be multiplied and increased among all them that love our lord jesus Chryst (the truth of God) in pureness of mind Amen. brethren beloved in our saviour jesus christ, i Cor. xv. Consider (I Pray you) the great goodness of God, in that he hath called you by his grace to the knowledge of himself/ through the word which is great mercy toward you in christ jesus. for flesh and blood (saith. Sayncte paul) can not inherit the kingdom of i God/ neither can corruption inherit pncorrupcyon. Nichodemus being A aharysey and a man learned, Ye know, dfter the judgements of men, and enwued also with the gifts of nature/ as wit, reason, knowledge and understanding natural: yet could not he of his own power and strength comprehend the heavenly doctrine of our savour christ, nor perceive the celestial mind thereof till he was helped by grace from God above, and borne a new, Not of mortal seed/ but of immortal, which, endureth & lasteth for ever. Ihon. iii. For that which is born of the flesh is flesh (saith christ) But that which is borne of the spirit is sprite. Therefore said christ Except thou be borne of water, and of the holy spirit, thou canst not see the kingdom of God. For all thought god since the beginning hath appropryated certain gifts of grace to the nature of man by reason whereof he doth excel in his creation, all other creatures not only in shape of body, statute and countenance also in the aforesaid spiritual gifts of grace annexed to nature as wit reason, knowledge and understanding. for when god made man at the beginning he gave him a Reasonable soul, from the which proceedeth so God withdraw it not a mind of understanding in all mankind, above all other creatures which the lord hath created upon the face of the whole earth: yet truly without the especial grace of the lord GOD, and gift from heaven above (although a man he never so wise and excellent) Yet can he not obtaygne of his own strength (which cometh, of our first birth) the true knowledge, fear and love of god, which fell from us in adam But by grace are ye saved through faith/ (saith paul) and not of yourselves nor through works, Roma. iii. least any man should boast himself: but by christ are we saved and made the beloved sons of the hyghestt: As witness the saint john saying: He gave them power to be the Sons of GOD, as many as believe in his name which are not born of flesh nor of blood, nor of the will of man/ but of GOD. johan. i. Roma. viii And through him (my brethren) ye have obtained not only knowledge and judgement to discern and judge betwixt the good & the evil: but also ye are made able through the spirit which a bideth in you which ye have of God to choose the good & to leave the evil. Galla. 4. a i Cor. ij. b for the lord no doubt, is a spirit, saith paul and where the spirit of the lord is, there is liberty and through him ye are made strong/ so that ye obey, ij. Cor. iij. for through christ (saith he) I can do all things, which he hath made me able. brethren, if ye obey & be now said by the holy spirit of God, Roma vjij then truly are ye made the free sons of God, then shall ye also be made perfect and obtain victory against sin, death and hell, which is the whole power of Satan our mortal enemy. brethren, deceive not yourselves/ for look to whom ye do obey/ truly his servants ye are, to whom ye do obey, whether it be by obedience unto righteousness or sin unto death. In Adam truly we were all dead/ but in christ we are all made alive, as many as believe in his name as pertaining to the flesh (as. s. Paul saith we were all naturally born the children of wrath, Roma vi. as well as all other because of original Sin, that reigneth in all flesh. Reason was blind and nature corrupt, therefore could it not obey to the will of GOD/ but vyolentlye strove against him/ desiring that he hated, and hating that he loved▪ i Corin. iij For the natural man (saith saint Paul) perceiveth not the things of good/ that belong to the spirit, i Corin. iij. for they are but foolishness unto him. Neither can he perceive them (saith he) for they are spiritually examined: but he that is spiritual, dyscusseth all things. brethren, your minds are now lightened by grace, and ye have now received the spirit of God/ which bryngethe. knowledge and a perfect willing obedient mind to do the will of God: But whosoever hath not the Spirit, the same is none of his. For asmuch as ye are partakers of the holy spirit, and are borne a new, year not now (my brethren) under the law but under grace. Obey unto the form of doctrine (I pray you) whereunto ye are called. for truly God hath pleasure in a lovely heart. And an obedient Mind is all ways at peace with him. The natural man not renewed, knoweth not God/ neither is he obedient to the ryghteowsenes, which is of value be for him, neither can be/ sayeth paul/ For delectation and custom in evil/ blindeth there understanding that they are not obedient/ no not to that goodness that natural reason teacheth them/ & they say they know God, love him and keep all his commandments. They deceive themselves utterly thinking them rich, when the world favoureth them, when indeed they are blind and poor▪ for though they possess much yet indeed they have no thing. Therefore the hope of the ungodly is as the dry thistle flower. Luke. xii. For their faith is vain and of none effect. When they hear the word of God, which is the truth they are not obedient to do thereafter▪ they delight in evil/ and have no desire, to follow righteousness therefore/ when they come to the knowledge of the scripture they fall suddenly into many dangerous errors. Some because they Would be hid from God's wind themselves in a foolish cloak of myar necessity/ saying in themselves/ that if can not otherwise be: When in deed they strive not at all to make resystaunce but do let the fleshly mind run whether it lusteth, So for lack of obedience they fall into wilful sin, deceiving themselves in their own imaginations. To do evil they have power because they will/ but to do well they have none at all, for they will not. Thus the ungodly abide still in their own lusts, and will not leave of. But as saint paul saith they heap together the treasure of wrath against the day of vengeance: when shallbe opened the righteous judgement of God which will reward every man/ according to his deeds that is to say/ praise, honour/ & immortality to them which continue in good doing and seek eternal life. But unto them that are rebellious/ and do disobey the truth and follow Inyquytye/ shall come Indygnatyon/ Wrath/ Trybulatyon/ and anguish upon the Soul of every man that doth evil/ forwyth GOD truly/ there is no Respect of parsons/ for he will reward every man after their deeds. Nevertheless the multitude of the ungodly will not repent, for they have pleasure to live in Sin, and some that were escaped from the filthiness of the world (as saint Peter saith) through the knowledge of the Lord, ij. Petr. ij. and of the saviour and redeemer JESUS CHRIST are yet entangled again therein and are overcome. So is the latter end worse than the beginning. For of whom a man is overcome, to the same he is in bondage. Therefore their minds are unstable and are to fled to and froo, as a ship in the sea, with raging winds with every persuasion and blast that cometh. Some have erred/ and (as saint paul saith) are turned to vain jangling (as if they thought the holy religion of christ our saviour and redeemer to stand in speaking & hearing only, and not rather in obeying to the will of the Lord GOD to do the same (because they would be teachers) in the most holy scripture. And (as Paul saith) understanding not what they speak, j Tymo. j nor whereof they affirm. But the Lord God hath called you dearly beloved by his Grace, that ye should obey to the truth, and be like fasshyoned to his son. Cast not away your confidence which hath so great reward to recompense/ for truly to be in our saviour christ is to be a new Creature. A willing mind maketh an obedient heart and a diligent hand: Therefore as the holy Prophet, sayeth plough up your fresh ground like diligent husbandmen/ and sow no more amongst the thorns: So shall ye bring forth the fruits of righteousness, and reap the reward of well doing, the husband man laboureth the ground diligently in due season, as ye know, that the lord may prosper the work of his hands Consider your time likewise and refuse not the grace of God whiles it is offered you, Math. xv. Hebre. xii. lest at another time when ye would gladdelye ye be not heard, for as much as year called by grace to be children of light/ and heirs of eternal life, for ye have received of his holy spirit in earnest of your salvation in that ye have consented already with your whole hearts to the Truth of God. I beseech you by the mercifulness of God, obey to the form of doctrine, whereunto ye are called. Roma. xiii And fashion not yourselves like unto this world. but beye changed/ & as saint paul saith in your shape by the renewing of your wits/ that ye may feel what that good & acceptable will of god is. Therefore as it is written: Psal. xciiij To day if you hear his voice/ harden not your hearts for truly disobedience is hateful, yea and often times doth the lord punish it. Nun. xiii i. Reg. xv. ij. Re. xvij. What was said to king Saul by Samuel the prophet/ when he disobeyed the lords commandment, ye know/ hath the Lord (said he) as great pleasure in brent sacrifices and offerings as when the voice of the Lord is obeyed? Behold said Samuel, to obey is better than sacrifice, & to hearken is better than the fat of rams, for rebellion or disobedience is as the sin of witchcraft, & stoubburnes as the wickedness of idolatry etc. For an obedient heart truly is much accepted with God, and a lowly troubled sprite will he not despyce, it is a very pleasant ground prepared and made ready (as it were by the industry and labour of a diligent husband man) for the lord to plant all virtue and grace in. brethren/ obey to the will of God and show a willing mind. By your deydes be no longer slothful, neither over much afraid/ neither to hasty without measure, wanting discretion. But keep measure in all your ways: and wisely consider place and time, for ye are now no more your own, but are dearly bought with the most precious blood of jesus. If the lord find you faithful in little, know for a surety, Eccle. j that he will make you rulers over much. 2. Peter. 1. Therefore (as saint peter saith) in your faith minister virtue in virtue knowledge in knowledge, temperauncye intemperauncye, patience, in pacynece/ godliness in godliness, brother lie kindness in brotherly kindness, love etc. Remember the matter is weighty, therefore be not deceived. Surely if ye will walk by this rule, ye can not fall, neither shall ye be led a wrong way. Go not from the word of God, decline neither to the right hand neither to the left/ left ye peryssshe from the right way, for as the branch can bear no fruit of himself except he abide in the Vine (saith christ) no more can ye except yea bide in me. john. xv. See that your faith be lively cleaving sure to the holy word of god, which is already grafted in you truely (except you have believed in vain) it is of power to save your souls, for it is quick and mighty in operation, & sharper/ then any two edged sword▪ ye know brethren/ the end of the commandments, is love that cometh of a puer heart, of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned: whose fruits can not be hid. But as for such as turn back unto their own wickedness the lord shall lead them forth with the eveldoers/ but peace shallbe upon Israel. Truly knowledge is dangerous/ where love and obedience is lacking/ for it tyckelyth the mind of fools, and lefteth them up with vanity: But such as seek to increase in virtue walk surely. Therefore search not unreverently the sacred word of god▪ lest ye stumbel in your way/ and take asodeyn fall▪ knowledge is a gift of the sprite, and in the hand of god and he measureth his gifts to his creatures at his own pleasure and will, Therefore, whether ye obtain at his hand either much or little, praise him for it/ and be consent with his doing. Search not the groaned of such things/ (saith the wise man) as are to mighty for thee: But look what god commandeth and think upon that always: and be not curious in many of his works for he that loveth pereyll shall perish therein. Grudge not against the good man of the house/ though he do with his own as he leyst, least thou be reproved and sent away with rebuke. Be ye therefore dyscret and sober▪ settle your Hearts in the true fear of God, and arm your souls to temptation. Turn your ears to the truth, my brethren, and use the gifts that ye have received with a lowly and an obedient heart faithfully/ that your fruits may appear and receive not the grace of god in vain, for it is written. I have hard the in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured the. ij. Cor. v. Behold now in that well accepted time/ saith paul/ now is the day of health/ let us give none occasion of evil/ that in our ministering, or office there be found no fault, But in all things/ let us behave ourselves/ as ministers of God: In much patience/ in afflictions, in necessities, in anguysshes/ in strifes/ in labours in watchings, in fastings/ and in pureness. etc. many do hear read & speak the holy scriptures, (praised be God) and many desire to know much. But blessed and happy are ye, which obey to the truth/ So that ye do thereafter for the kingdom of God, standeth not in words (as ye well know) but in power & working the wicked sinners have God, and his holy word many times in their mouths: but they walk still in their oun corrupt ways▪ truly they are the bound servants of sin that be subdued to lusts & overcome of sin. ij. Pet. iij. For of whom a man is overcomed saith saint peter to the same he is in bondage. The ungodly man hath not the fear of God, before his eyes: Nether doth he regard the law of the highest. Therefore shall he not be preserved, for God regardeth him not, neither will he defend him in the time of trouble▪ can such prosper/ as take part against the highest, & provoke the lord to anger, Apoca. nineteen continually with there unlawful deeds? & fight against the holy sprite of our God: and yet they say in their hearts Tush, God seeth it not, the God of jacob regardeth it not they do evil/ and they say they do well ye although they know/ marry times the contrary because they delight in evil their foolish hearts are blinded. Therefore must they reap the fruits of their labours when they think themselves wise they become fools, because their understanding is blinded. When they think they know God love him, An idol is that which hath the love of the heart and is placed in the towme 〈◊〉 God. Every man 〈◊〉 treasureiss their which he l●eth best. and serve him most truly they serve an idol and a false God/ in his stead and place/ feigned of their own fleshly lusts and carnal affections and of the eternal God save the name only) they know nothing/ for where a man's treasure is, saith christ/ there will his heart be also. In words truly many say they know god▪ but with their deeds they shamfullye deny him▪ in that they refuse to live according to his commandments & will they have forsaken the lively testament of god made in the precious blood and death of our saviour christ jesus/ to all that believe in him/ (that is to say) which with a free heart, do put themselves under the covenant of God to do his will. And after their own imagination fain themselves an other way to the kingdom of heaven/ as easy and broad to the flesh as they lust: they refused the narrow way, This way is narrow, and straight/ to the flesh/ but bread and cadye to a willing mynde● and straight gate that leadeth unto life and have chosen that brood easy way to live after their lusts which leadeth all that walk in it, into everlasting condemnation on wisely do they forsake the word of the lord which he ordained a lantern and a sure light unto their feet/ to walk in extreme darkness, of their own blind imaginations nevertheless, thus saith the lord our merciful God/ unto the ungodly sinners. Eze. 33. If I say to the wicked he shall die saith the lord yet if he turn from his wickedness and do the things which is equal and right he shall surely live, & not die & again, O/ turnt you turn you saith the lord/ O why will ye die? As truly as I live, saith the lord, I have no pleasuri● the death of a sinner but will rather that he convert & live. etc. Brethrens/ I beseech you for the dear mercy of God, esteem your saluatyon and health which is precious & is now so freely offered unto you in yep̄cious blood of jesus: have compassion your own souls, and show love and charity to the pour oppressed/ the lame blind and needy look upon yourselves with an inward eye/ and see that your souls be refreashed, that they may live O/ why will ye die, convert and turn to the lord, with your whole hearts/ from your wicked and sinful ways, & truly your sins are forgiven you▪ why esteem ye so much the vain pleasures of this world? Which are the delights of the carnal and earthily mind seeing they are so vain and transitory. Remember Esau: Sell not your enheretaunce which is precious for so vile 〈◊〉 a price/ least after when ye would gladly obtain, ye be put by. brethren, Consider ye are not now under the law/ but under grace▪ because ye are graft/ into jesuchryste by faith O, therefore I besy●h you/ do no more wylfully evil: So can fynne now do ye no harm. My little chyldryne▪ these ●yre●s w●yt I unto you saith saint john that ye sin not. But if any man sin: yet have we an Advocate with the father (saith he) jesus christ which is righteous. etc. For the lord ordereth a good man's going (saith holy david) and hath pleasure in his way. Though he fail, he shall not be hurt, for the lord upholdeth him, Although the righteous happen to fall sometime into sin: yet they have an advocate for it with the father, because they would not sin. Psa. 36 and .90 with his hand. etc. O, that ye would now obey to the voice of God, contained in his sacred word, that ye might receive christ into your souls. brethren beloved in our saviour Chryst jesus, I beseech you for the dear love of Chryst jesus (which refused not to suffer reprove of the worldde, & to give his life for our sakes that we might live by him) be warned in time least Satan beguile you, and bring you a sleep with the world through in ordinate desire of vain riches, sorry and pleasure thereof, coveting after merry and joyful days here relyghting the mind in wantonness or worldly lusts, which is the plain way to utter destruction. Know ye not, how the enemy seeketh busuly by these things to betray you? And how he layeth carnal fleashelye and worldly pleasures as a bait, wherein venom/ yeth hid before your eyes to catch your minds/ that he may so carry you away▪ For as the fowler's bait betrayeth the fowls. So doth the vain pleasures of this world beguiled the minds of fowls: For through the desire of it the enemy overcometh them▪ leading the sinner from one vanity to an other till he have so brought him in woeful bondage, and most miserable captivity. But this ye know my brethren. I mean the sea soon, how it is time (as saint paul saith) that we should now a wake out of sleep, Rom. xiii. for now is our salvation nearer, than when we believed. The night is paste, and the day is come nigh. Let us therefore Cast a way the deeds of darekenes, and put on the Armour of light. Let us now walk honestelye (saith he) as in the day light: not in eating and drinking, chambering, & wantonness neither in strife & envying but put ye on the lord jesus Chryst, & make not provision for the flesh to fulfil the lusts of it. Truly we are called (as ye know to suffer with Chryst, that we might be made partakers with him in glory for if we were grafted like him in death Then shall we be like him also in the resurrection, jesus autem dixit illis. Amen dico, vobis quod vos qui secuti estis me, in regeneracione cum sederit fisius hominis in se●●e maiestatis sue. etc. Math. nineteen the rich man liveth here in all pleasures and fared deliciously. And Lazarus lived in trouble and pain. But after this life Lazarus received joy saith christ and the rich man pain for Abraham said unto him: son remember that thou in thy life time rceivedst thy good and contrary wise Lazarus pain, now therefore is he comforted, and the art punished. Our saviour, christ truly being the lord of our glory (during that time of this life (walked here through many tribulations. He refused the sceptre and crown of a worldly kingdom with all the vain friend ship & glory that the world could give him/ & received with mourning dears on his head a crown of sharp thorns & a reed for a sceptre in his right hand, Mat xxvi that he might so for our sakes acomplysh the will of his heavenly father, & get victory against that whole power of the enemy. Chryst suffered for us saith. s. peter leaving us an example that we should follow his fotsteppes/ which did no sin/ neither was their guile found in his mouth. etc. christ had no felicity in this present world which is now corrupt, but his rejoicing was in the will of his father, and he had a great respect to the reward at the end If the son of God taking our nature upon him, might not escape/ but must drink of this Cup, who said The servant is not above the master, neither the messynger greater than he that sendeth him. Think not ye to escape/ my brethren, if ye intend to be made partakers with him of his father's heavenly kingdom. Therefore with patience possess your souls, and like faithful soldiers of jesus christ, take up your Cross/ and follow him, for truly he hath promised, that if ye be partakers with him in suffering/ ye shall be partakers with him in glory. But if you live after the flesh & have your pleasure amongst the wicked: ye must die: But if ye mortify the deeds of the flesh/ through the spirit, then shall ye live. brethren/ ye are called of God that ye should be holy. Therefore I would not that ye should now be partakers in the deeds of the wicked, i Corin. x. and have fellowship with devils, for truly (as saint paul saith) ye can not be partakers of the lords table, and of the table of devils, neither drink of the lords cup and of the cup of devils, Either shall we provoke the lord (saith he) or are we stronger than he? ye can not serve God and mammon, how agreeth light with darkness? righteousness with unryghtousnes? or Chryst with Belyas? The heart that goeth two ways truly is hated, and such as are double tongued/ are accursed of God. What can it profit a man to win all the world/ with the loss and damage of his own soul? yea what shall he give to redeem it again with all he that seeketh to save his life shall lose it (saith christ): But he that will lose his life for my sake, shall save it. yea blessed and happy are those, (Saith the spirit) that love not their lives unto the death: Truly they shall receive a Crown of life. And although ye know the truth already (my brethren dearly beloved in our saviour jesus christ yet I think it not vain by these letters/ to stir up your remembrance for truly it is my dylyee that ye should not perish with the world. but that ye should turn from your sins, and live Therefore/ saying God hath called you with an holy calling, for he hath supplied your hearts with the oil of grace & opened your understanding, by his holy spirit: So that ye have now seen his holy will declared unto us in christ jesus And have consented, that it is the truth of God I beseech you by the mercyfullnes of God/ make your bodies, a quick and lively sacrifice/ holy & acceptable to God/ which as sayncte Paul saith is your reasonable serving of God, And fashion not yourselves like unto this world, but be ye changed in your shape by the Renewing of your wits. saying ye are now risen with christ, se●te your minds above on heavenly things where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God the father and not on the things that art on the earth. brethren deceive not yourselves bring forth the perfect fruits belonging to repentance/ which is amendment of life. Let it appear I pray you that year of christ/ & have hard the word in deed. truly it is good that the heart be established with grace and not with so vanyces, If vertu increase, ye cannot be you'll, nor yet unfruitful in the knowledge of christ. But he that wanteth this/ as saint Peter saith, is blinds groping for the way which his hand and hath forgotten/ that he was purged from his old sins for true faith is lively/ & cannot be hid neither may she in any wise dwell or abide alone for she hath a great desire to many virtues. She accompany the herself with gods wisdom & love She is nourished daily with the bright son of righteousness/ & the highest watereth her plants with the sweet showers of grace. Through perfect obedience to the wall of god, she spreadeth forth her branches in due season whereby she obtaineth a sure hope her fruits proseade from the tree of life/ For truly truly they are the works of the spirit of God, as love, joy/ peace, long suffering, g●ntelnes, goodness/ faythefullnes meekness/ temperancy. for he eye wayteh unto the commandments of the lord to keep them: for in the miss her life, Dearly beloved ye are called and choose ye are washed from an evil conscience: ye are sanctified by the blood of jesus, through the eternal spirit/ which dwelleth in you: By whom/ ye are able through christ. which (as saint paul sayeth hath made us able to be ministers of the new testament. Therefore work own your salvation, And (as the Apostle peter saith) make your calling and election sure/ through good works. mortify therefore your membres which are earthly. And walk not from hensefourth/ as other heathen people walk in vanity of their minds, blinded in their understanding/ being strangers from the life that is in God/ through the yngnoraunce that is in them▪ because of the blindness of there hearts/ which being passed repentance, Have given themselves unto wantonness, to work almaner of uncleanness/ even with g●● dynes. But ye have not so learned christ as saint paul saith. if so be ye have hard of him and are tawght of him. Even as the truth is in jesus so then as concerning the conversation in times passed, lay from you the old man which is corrupt▪ (through deceivable lusts, and be ye renewed in the spirit of your understanding minds: And put on that new man which is shapen after the ymag of god, in righteousness and true holiness, now therefore as elect of God holy and beloved, put on tender mercy kindness humbleness of mind, meekness, Long suffering, forbering one another/ and forgeving one another. Colloss. iij. if any man have a quarrel to an other (saith saint paul) even as Chryst forgave you, even so do ye▪ ye are called to be children of lyhgt that ye should be holy and with out blame. if ye put to a willing mind ye shall find the lord read ye with his grace at your hand. for God loveth you and therefore will be all ways defend you and deliver you in the howl of temptation (which as christ saith shall come to tempt them that sit upon the face of the earth. But ye have not received the spirit of the world, that your felicity should be in the things thereof: Neither that ye seek God all way owtewardely, and to serve him in the letter. But ye have received the spirit of God, which loosed in your hearts the works of sin, and opened the inward eyes of your mind that ye should now have no more pleasure in them. For the veil is taken away for your hearts/ and year turned to the lord that ye may now see the bright face of God/ which is his love, and merciful will towards us in christ jesus. Therefore truly we are called and taught of God/ to serve him in a new conversation, in spirit and verity and not in the old conversation of the letter. For the letter killeth (saith saint paul). But the spirit giveth life. If the first testament had been faultless saith he, Hebr. viii/ than should there no place have been sought for the second. For in rebuking them he saith, Behold the days will come (saith the Lord) and I will finish upon the house of Israel and upon the house of juda a new testament not like the testament that I made with their fathers at that time when I took them by the hand and led them out of the land of Egypte for they continued not in my testament and I regarded them not sayeth the lord, But this is the testament and I regarded them not saith the lord/ But this is the testament, that I will make with the house of Israel After those days (saith the lord) I will put milawes in their minds and in their hearts I will write them: & I will be their God, & they shall be my people. This is the new testament, that the lord hath now made with his people▪ truly he writeth his law by his spirit in their hearts/ that they may do it according to his will. Saint Paul testifieth, Rom▪ xv. that jesus christ was a minister of the cyrcuncysyon, for the truth of God, to confirm the promesses made unto the fathers, by whom ye are called & made ministers in the new testament/ and partakers of the true circumsysyon which is inspryt & not in letter/ that ye might receive of his holiness through the spirit that he hath given us. Therefore (my brethren) be ye holy, be ye holy in all your conversation, for it is written. Be ye holy for I am holy/ and surely, the things that ye have in hand be very holy/ know ye not how that ye are partakers of the nature of God, by participation of his holy spirit which ye have received? And how that ye are made the temple of God, because his holy sprit dwelleth in you defile not then this holy place lest the lord be angry; and so ye perish from the right way. This holy city new Jerusalem, Apoca. xxi. John saw come down from God out of heaven prepared as a bride garnished for her husband. And he hard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them. etc. This holy tabernacle and dwelling house/ hath god pight among you/ and not man, after which moyses was commanded to make all the work which wece but shadows (saith saint Paul) of true things to come: And were ordained until the time of reformation with hath God now in this last time by Chryst opened unto us, for by his blood have we an open way in into the holy place, and most holy by the new and living way, which he hath prepared for us though the veil, that is to say/ by his flesh. And by christ are ye beloved, and made ministers in the new testament and pryestes unto the high god to offer in the holy place in holy vessels of pure gold that acceptable sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, Vessels of pure gold are the hearts and consciences of men purged from the filth of sin, and corruption that is to say, the fruits of those lips/ with do confess his most holy name/ attend therefore to that thing, that ye have now hard (my dear brethren) and as dear children, labour earnestly by the help of the spirit to keep yourselves unspotted of the world, that ye may be saved and be made the perfect sons of God/ and coheir with our saviour jesus christ of his everlasting heavenly kingdom. Amen. The god of all patience and consolation give to everyone of you grace so to labour and travail in your calling after the example of christ/ that your gift may increase, lest you also be plucked away in the erourre of the wicked, and fall from your steadfastness/ But grow in grace and the lord will deliver you from all evil doing, and keep you to his heavenly kingdom: to whom be all praise/ honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen. The grace of God be with your spirit. Amen Yours as charity bindeth me/ Henry heart. give all the praise to God, and be always thankful unto him. Anno. 1548. the . ●● October
