A DECLARATION OF THE KING, CONCERNING the observation of his Edicts, of the union of his catholic Subiects, to the rooting out of heresy: carrying withall, a putting up, and burying of all such things as haue been committed contrary thereunto, until this present, by any of his said catholic Subiects. printer's device of S. Milanges? At BVRDEAVX. By S. Milanges, ordinary Printer unto the King. 1589. ❧ A declaration of the King, concerning the observation of his Edicts of the union of his catholic subiects, to the rooting out of heresy: carrying withall, a putting up and burying of all such things, as haue been committed contrary thereunto, until this present, by any of his said catholic Subiects. HEnry by the grace of God King of france, and Poland, to all those to whom these presents shal come greeting. We haue at all times, and specially since our Edict of the month of july last past; tried by all manner of means possible, to unite all our good catholic subiectes to live in concord and good will, and under our authority: to the end that from the said union, and strength that should rise of it unto us, wee might reap the fruit which we haue always sought after and endeavoured unto, to cleanse this our realm from heresies, and to establish in it our holy faith, the catholic, apostolic, and roman religion: for seeing plainly, that there could spring nothing else from the division of our said catholic subiects, but a desolation of the said religion, and the overthrow of our state. And although of late some were found near about us, which did strive too too manifestly, in our presence, and else where, by their adherents, to kindle and foster the said division, to breed in every one a misliking of our proceedings, and to bring down altogether our authority: wee notwithstanding, with great patience and equanimitie, haue tolerated the effects of their evil will which they shewed in this behalf, trying by all favour and good usage that wee could, to bow their hearts, and bring them unto that which was agreeable to reason, for the good & quiet of our said state, & the maintaining of our said catholic religion. They nevertheless not being withdrawn from their pernicious practices, neither through the said effects of our gentleness and holy purpose, nor through any other consideration; wee found out that they were grown so far, as to haue attempted a fresh against us and our authority which to withstand, wee haue been constrained, to our great grief, to prevent their sinister practices. But for the singular good will, which hath been bread with us, and always continued, and will continue towards our said catholic subiects, with like care of their quietness, safety, and preservation of their lives, that a Father might haue over his children; we haue used such gentleness and moderation in the same, as to restrain and stay the punishment in the heads onely and authors of the evil, having spared their adherents and seruants, and received them among ours, vpon the promiss which they haue given us to be hence forward loyal and faithful subiectes. And although as well by our former actions, as by this our latter doing, wee haue given such evident witness of our holy intention, gentleness, and clemency; that no man need to doubt thereof: notwithstanding to make it more manifest to all men, wee for these causes, haue signified, declared, and protested, and by these presents do signify, declare, and protest, that, that which is happened, hath been for nothing else, but for the infringing of our said Edict in the month july, even since the publication thereof. And for the execution of that which is contained in it, our will and intent is to haue it kept, observed, and maintained from point to point, as a grounded lawe, as we haue established it, and sworn in the assembly of our states, according to the form and tenor thereof. Yet notwithstanding to assure all other which may haue been partakers of contrary demeanour thereunto, that they shall never be called in question for it, and to maintain them in the union of our other catholic subiects under one obedience: we haue put up, butted, and abolished, and do by these presents put up, bury, and abolish, of our full power, special favour, and royal authority, all that, wherein they may haue faulted in the behalf of their duty of obedience which they owe unto us: and the oath taken by them for the observation of our said edict; so that they shall not hereafter be atached or molested any ways or means that may bee, which we inhabit unto all our iudges & officers. And in this behalf we haue enjoined, & do by these presentes enjoin silence unto our general attorney; & to all others, vpon condition, that henceforth they shall wholly relinquish all leagues, associations, practices, dealings, attempts, and intelligences with any person, whatsoever he be, within or without our said realm: nether shal they make any, nor enter into any, nor participate nor cleave to any, directly or indirectly, in what sort or manner soever it be, which moreover we forbid most expressly unto all our subiectes, what quality or condition soever they be of. And if hereafter any oppose himself in this case, wee enjoin most expressly our said Iudges and officers to proceed against them, as in our said Edict is specified. Also we give charge to our trusty and well-beloved of our Courts of Parliaments, Bailiffs, Stewards, or their deputies, and to all other Iustices and officers whom it shall belong unto, that they cause these presents to be read, published, and registered, and the contents thereof to keep, and cause to bee kept, observe, and maintain, according to their form and tenor, without any thing to the contrary, and not to suffer the breach therof by any, in any wise: for such is our will. In witness whereof, wee haue caused our seal to be set to these presents. given at Bloys, the last of December, in the year of our LORD 1588. And of our reign the 15. signed thus. HENRY.
