Oour holy father pope Leo the ten of that name unto all christian people that these present letters shall see sendeth salutation and thapostolic blessing.  
¶ almighty god our creator and redemptor to th'intent he would deliver mankind from the thraldom and bounds of our ghostly ennymye the devil/ was contented to send down into earth his only gotten son to be endewyde with the nature of man for man's redemption. By whose example/ our said holy father being moved/ enforsith himself with all study/ for to deliver from the yoke of servitude all those christian people/ which for the worshipping of Christ's faith in the miserable bondage of the enemies of Christ's feithe be oppressed.  
¶ Item our said holy father hath understand that his well-beloved child Iohn Sargy of Corfu lay-man of the diocies of Athenis/ being borne of an noble progeny/ with his two brethren passing by ship/ upon the see of Egey/ towards the isle of Creta/ was taken by certain turks robbers upon the see and brought by them unto miserable servitude and bondage.  
¶ Item our said holy father declareth how that the said John Sargy was delivered from the said servitude (his said two brethren abiding still in captivity) for whose redemption and ransom three hundredth ducats of gold large was ordained for to be paid voto the said turks/ which by reason of their poverty/ they be not able for to pay. Wherefore greatly it is to be dread that unless In breve time the said prisoners be comforted in that behalf with the devout alms of christian people/ they being not able long to suffer the pains of so cruel thraldom shall be compelled for to deny the name of jesus christ and his holy christian religion.  
¶ Wherefore our said holy father using the room in earth of our saviour Christ jesus/ who of his pity and meekness rewardith all devout almoses and merciful gifts by oon hundredth fold. And giveth unto his true people much more than they can deserve/ gladly moveth all true christian people unto the work of pity/ by indulgences and remissions of sins/ to th'intent/ that they may be more apt unto the favours of god/ and also by mean of their temporal gifts they may deserve to obtain the rewards of eternal health.  
¶ Our said holy father therefore desiring that the said prisoners should be delivered from the said cruel servitude/ and that christian people may more gladly put to their helping hands for their redemption for that/ that they shall perceive themself to be refreshed more plentyously by the gifts of heavenly grace/ trusting upon the mercy of almighty god/ and th'authority of Peter and Paul his holy apostles/ unto all & every true christian people both man & woman truly penitent and confessed/ the which unto the said Iohn Sargy/ or unto any honest man that by him shall be deputed/ will put their helping hands of their lawful goods altar their devotion for the redeeming of the said prisoners/ as often times as they so do/ mercifully granteth xu years and as many lentes of pardon and indulgence/ in remission of their sins.  
¶ Item our said holy father commandeth all patriarchs archbishops & bishops under pain of interdiction of entering the church/ and all abbots/ Prior's/ Plebaynes/ Person and/ Vycars' of parrisshe church's/ and preachers of the word of god/ and other spiritual persons unto whom these present letters shall come under pain of the sentence of excommunication that they publish or cause to be published the said letters/ in their churches/ when the most people be their accompanied to here the divine service/ and as often times as they shall be required thereunto upon the said Iohnns party.  
¶ Item our said holy father commandeth that in every parish/ where the said Iohn shall come/ two honest and credible persons shall be deputed by the said curates/ which/ by the way of pity and charity/ shall gether the alms and devotion of people/ and the same so gathered they shall truly deliver unto the said Iohn or his deputis/ and ferther help and favour them as appertaineth.  
¶ Item our said holy father inhibiteth and commandeth/ every man what degree or estate so ever he be of/ and also the commissaries deputed for the building of saint Peter's church in Rome that they ne any of them trouble molest or let the foresaid Iohn or his deputies in this there present cause. Which his holiness will not/ to be comprised in any revocation or suspension of like indulgence made in that by half by his holiness and the holy see apostolic though all the said revocation be made in favour of the said building of saint Peter's church in Rome/ and the foresaid letters of indulgence his holiness will/ do stand in strength and effect only for the term of four years next and immediately following the date of the same. Which is given at Rome the year of the incarnation of our lord jesus Christ. M. CCCCC.xvi. the xii day before the calendars of june the fourth year of our said holy father the pope.   

¶ Here followeth in english the contents of the kings most honourable letters patents of protection under his great seal.  
¶ It hath pleased the kings most noble grace not only moved with pity and compassion towards the redemption & deliverance of the above named prisoners from the servitude and thraldom of the above said turks enemies to the name & religion of christ but also right entirely exhorted and required unto the same by the pope's holiness hath accepted and taken the forenamed Iohn Sargy proctor for him & his said brethren his servants and goods into his most royal & gracious protection & defence/ whereso ever he or they shall come within this realm/ requiring all Bysshopes/ abbots/ Prior's/ People/ vicars and other spiritual personages/ in whose churches the said Iohn or his deputes shall come/ thankfully taccept and admit them in that behalf. And also straightly communadeth all his sheriffs Mayres & other his officers and subjects temporal/ that they shall maintain defend and aid the said Iohn/ his deputes and servants and goods where so ever they shall come/ for aliving and gethering of alms/ & chartable gifts of christian people in this behalf/ and that his said officers and subjects shall not do unto them any injury hurt molestation trouble or grief/ but shall let the same to be done by any other/ and many such malicious demeanour be commyttede against him his said deputes or servants than they shall see it speedily and without delay duly corrected/ as more plainly it is expressed in his most gracious letters patents under his great seal thereupon made. Dated at his palace of westminster the xxvi day of Octobre in the ten year of his reign. Which letters of his said most royal & gracious part his highness will/ that after one hole year nex● ensuyuge the date here shall be void and of none effect.
