¶ Here after followeth the new privileges and Indulgences granted by ou● holy Father the Pope Leo ten to the house of saint Thomas of Acres in London. first that all & every christian man & woman being truly penitent & confessed which yearly shall devoutly visit the said The stations of Rome. hospital on ash wednesday/ & ii days immediately next following on Shere thursday/ & two days immediately next ensuing/ Also in the feasts of the translation & matterdome of saint Thomas the martyr/ and in the evyns of the same feasts putting to their helping hands unto the reparation maintaining and paying of the debts of the said hospital in either of the feasts above said/ and evyns of the same shall obtain and have as great & like pardon and Indulgence with remission of sins as if they personally should visit the Church at Rome named Scala celi/ and all other churches and holy places of Rome within and without the said City of Rome/ In every day of Lent & other times of the year when the stations of the said City within & without and Indulgence of the same are solemnized/ And as if they had done & fulfilled all manner of things which ought to be fulfilled to obtain the said judulgence at Rome. ¶ Secondly that all christian people may the sooner obtain the said Indulgence and remissions of sins granted to the for Power given to the master & his depuy to assign confessoures. said hospital our holy father the Pope aforesaid hath granted that it may be lawful to the said master of the said hospital for the time being in the feasts abovesaid & evyns of the same to assign & depute sufficient Confessors secular or regular or both secular & regular together which master if he be a priest/ & these confessors so deputed by him/ or else if he be no priest these said confessors by him or by his lawful deputy so deputed/ And chosen as often as shallbe necessary after they have diligently hard the Confessions of the said devout People in these days/ Festes/ and Vigylles aforesaid every year in the said hospital may affoyle them once in their life of all & every of their sins crimes excesses and delictes how so ever grievous & enorm they be/ though they be such as are reserved unto the see of Rome except only those which been contained in the Bull which is red yearly at Rome on sher thursday/ but in all other cases not reserved unto the said see of Rome the foresaid confessors may assoil an enjoin them wholesome penance as often as need shall require. ¶ thirdly that the said Confessors so deputed as is aforesaid by the Master of the said Hospital may commute And turn Commutacyon of vows & relesing of oaths plenary remission ●nis ● life. authority to have Turrian Altar called altar portatili. all manner of vows into other deeds of charity/ the vow to Iherusalem/ the vow unto saint Peter and Poule of Rome the vow unto saint james in Compostella/ & also of religion & chastity only ●●cept/ also the said confessors may release all manner of oth●s. ¶ Also four that the said confessors may give unto all christian people being truly contrite and confessed visiting the said hospital in time abovesaid plenare & full remission of all their sins once in their life/ & in point of death. ¶ Also fifthly that it shallbe lawful unto the said master that now is and for the time shallbe/ and to the brethren of the said house/ and to all other christian people of either kind/ which for the time shall enter into the brethe●hed of saint Thomas the martyr that they may have an Altar called Altar portatile upon the which with dew reverence and honour in places convenient and onest/ so it be without prejudice of any other man/ and also that/ that the quality of their business doth enhance or fortune the said master and the foresaid brethren and susterne may sing mass/ or cause to be song before daylyght/ so that it be done abouts the Day light. ¶ provided always that the said master and brethren do not use to celebrate mass before Day light accustomably/ but only at certain times and scarcely for the reverence of the blessed sacrament of the Altar. ¶ The sixth grant is/ if it happen any Brother/ or sister of the said Fraternyte or Hospital to come to any Church interdict divine service may be said and the sacraments ministered in Time 〈…〉 by any ordinary authority or power it shallbe lawful secretly the doors being shit to minister sacraments and to say and here Masses and other divine services by themself if the said brethren be priests or by any other pressed sufficient secular or regular by them deputed/ and also in time of such interdiction to receive & minister the holy sacrament of the altar with other Sacraments save on Ester day without prejudice of any other person in presence of the said brethren and sisters/ and in the ●sence of them 〈◊〉 servants and their friends/ so that those brethren and Susterne and other such here●● 〈…〉 〈…〉 to 〈…〉 to 〈…〉 ●he said authority so it be 〈…〉 〈…〉 may be ●●●yed in Time of interdiction. perpetually may be observed and kept inviolate/ our said holy Father Pope Leo above named▪ hath n●●ed and 〈…〉 the most reverent Father in god the Lord archbishop of caunterbury Primate of England. And also the reverend Fade●s in god the lords bishops of London and Nor whytche now being/ and that hereafter shallbe perpetually to be protectors & defenders of the said hospital and of the above rehearsed Indulgences and privileges like as it is more fully contained in the letters of his holiness thereupon made under lead. ¶ Also our holy Father abovesaid hath confirmed and ratified all manner of liberties/ immunities & Indulgens granted by his ●decessours Popes of Rome unto the foresaid hospital Master and brethren of acon in London. Which privileges/ indulgences and immunytes hereafter doth follow. ¶ first our holy father Alexander the fourth of that Name sometime Pope of Rome graciously hath released to all christian people The seven. part of penance released. A commandment to all slates. In the time of interdiction divine service may be said once in the year. that doth help or relieve the said place with their goods or alms/ or do take fraternity of the said place & yearly to the same any Benefit give or pay/ the vii part of penance enjoined. ¶ Also our holy father Benet the xii of the name sometime Pope of Rome commandeth all prelate's to suffer the ꝑcuratours of the said place to pronounce and freely expone their needs and Indulgences in their said Church to the Clergy & other common people. ¶ Also if the said procurators come into any city Castle or town interdicted ones yearly have power to open the Church doors there so that divine service solemnly may be said/ cursed people by name put our/ and deed bodies in the Churchyerde to be buried/ And though that should do open penance that day shallbe released & spared. Also all brethren & susterne/ which shall give to the said place certain quantity of their goods & yearly pay to the Brecherns or proctors of the said house. And in their dying bequech or assign any goods to them/ may cheese yearly to them an able and discrete Confessor which may assoil them plenarly of all sins of the which they be very contrite and confessed/ except such as be reserved only to the court of Rome/ which be only vi cases contained in these ii verses. Percutit incendit falls at violate fluit a●nus/ perticipat papa sex solis casibus istis. The understanding whereof is this. Percutit/ that is to say he that strykyth a priest or a clerk grievously. Incendit/ he that wilfully & marycyously setteth any Town/ city/ or house on fire & there upon is denouncyd & a cursed. Falsat/ he that counterfaytyth the Pope's bulls or letters. violate/ he that breaketh any church & robbyth the same & there upon is denounced a cursed by his ordinary. Fluit: Annus/ he that is accursed by the Pope's legate & so standeth by the space of one hole year. Participate/ that is to say a Clerk commining faculty to assoil all Sins except vi in divine service wittingly & wilfully with a man that is accursed of the Pope himself every man being in any of these vi cases must go to Rome for absolution in all other casys they may be Assoiled by this privilege. ¶ Also the said confessor may dispense with them of all vows made the which they may not convenyenely nor profitably keep except only the vow of Iherusalem & the holy cross. Also eu●ry brother shall have his letter or writing of the said Fraternyte & his sepulture shall not be denied him what manner death he dieth or deceaseth but if he be accursed by name by the censure of holy church. ¶ Also our holy father Bonyface the ix of that name sometime Pope of Rome to all them repentant and shriven that in the Festis seven. years & vii lentes in every principal feast. of the nativity/ and Circumsision of our lord Ihesu Christ/ twelve day/ pasche day/ Ascension day/ Corpus x●i day/ whitsun day/ nativity/ Annunciation/ purification/ and Assumption of our Lady/ Also the nativity of saint johun baptist the apostles/ Peter and Poule/ the dedication of the said Church of saint Thomas/ also the festis of his translation & passion/ or martyrdom/ all halowen day▪ F●rthermore by the utas of the said nativity of Christ/ the epiphany/ Pasche/ Ascension/ Corpus x●i wytsondaye the nativity and Assumption of our Lady/ saint Iohn baptist the apostles Peter/ & Poule/ and by six days next after wytsondaye devoutly visiteth ●erely the same place of saint Thomas/ aforesaid in each of the said festival days vii years: & vii ●entes▪ 〈◊〉 each of the said utas▪ & vii days.
