S. K. P. F. depiction of Saint Catherine of Alexandria with sword and scourge IN the name of our lord Ihesu christ his blessed mother virgin Mary and saint katheryne the which vowed her virginity unto our lord Ihesu christ. &c. Be it know unto all & every christian man and woman that in the desert of Araby the middle part of the infidels is a certain mountain called the mount of Synay having in every side infidels bordering viii C. miles fro the company of christian men in the which mountain almighty god appeared & as David the profit testefyeth spoke with Moses' face to face and gave to him the ten commandments where and Moses saw a bush brenning all in fire & by that fire nothing consumed/ signifying the incarnation of the son of god to the top of the which Mountain god by his angels called the body of that blessed virgin saint katherine to be brought whereby process of time for a remembrance of so great marvels in the honour of the said saint Katherine was builded a devout monastery. For the favour of whom also our holy fathers Innocentius the viii Julius the second and Leo the ten pope's of Rome hath granted the Indulgences following for iii special causes. first for the mayunyenaunce of the monks of the said place the multitude of whom is great there serving god under the rule of saint basil and with great reverence keeping the glorious body of the said saint katheryne which monks in the mids of the said Infydell●s like sheep among wolves lead their life in extreme poverty and fere both by cause they devil viii C. miles from any christian men as we said before/ & also because the countries dying. C. C. Miles round about The said Monastery is unfruitful bringing torthe nother corn nor wine. secondly the said Indulgences were granted that the said monastery might be the better repaired in buildings and maintained with books chalyses & other ornaments longing to the church for because it hath no small ruin & decay by the invasions & oppressions now lately done both by the great tyranny of the Turk and the sultan. thirdly the said indulgences were granted to the said monastery & hospital for the chartable receiving of pilgrims resorting to the same which pilgrims within the space of. CC. miles can find nother house nor habitation to put their heeds in but only the said monastery which pilgrims if they should not meekly & chartable be received of the said monks doubtless many of them should take sickness and other bodily inconvenients through tediousness and labour of their journeys. ¶ 〈…〉 of causes papal. 〈…〉 authority of our say●●●ly 〈◊〉 pope's 〈…〉 that they may choose them a sufficient confessor secular or regular which dylygē●ely h●●rynge their confession may assoil them of all & every one of their sins crimes excesses or causes reserved to the ●ee of Rome once in their life except only such causes that be contained in the bull that is red on Sherethursdaye. ¶ absolution tociens quociens. ¶ Also the said authority is granted to the foresaid brethren & Systerne & benefactors that they may choose a sufficient confessor as is specified above/ the which diligently hearing their confession may assoil them as often times as it shall be needful from all their sins or causes except them that be reserved to the see of Rome. ¶ Full remission in the article of death. ¶ Also by the said authority is granted to the brethren and cistern that they may choose them in the article of death a sufficient confessor which may assoil them from all their sins and causes how grievous and enorm somever they be and to grant them full pardon & remission of all their sins and to remit pains dew for their sins in purgatory. ¶ The reverent Abbot with the covent of the said monastery hath willed & by their letters hath declared that the foresaid brethren & cistern may be partakers for evermore in time to come of all masses prayers & other spiritual suffrages which shall be done by them in the said monastery ¶ punishment for letting of this commission. ¶ Also our foresaid holy father. Leo the x. now being Pope is informed by the record of credible parsons that Dane Clement is a true monk & a true proctor of the said monastery wherefore he exhorteth all manner of lords/ patriarchs/ archbishops/ bishops/ abbots/ & their deputies and all other having dignity of Crystes church that they will withstand & punish by the Censures of the church & other remedies of the law all appeling set aside such men that contrarieth and letteth the foresaid Clement or any commissioners by him for the time deputyed in publishing of the said pardons taking unto them if necessity shall require help and assistance of the laity. ¶ Also it is commanded by the authority of the pope under the pain of excommunication in doing the contrary that all manner of abbots Pryours and parsons of parish churches show and publish to the people the said Indulgences when they shall be required for the behalf of the said Dane Clement or of any other by him deputyed which Indulgence our foresaid holy father Leo now being pope hath determined not for to be comprehended under any manner of revoking lymytting or modifying of other Indulgences as for the favour of building of saint Peter's church in Rome but alway to be except. ¶ Also out holy father Leo the ten now being pope requireth all & every one being parsons & ministers of parish churches that immediately after the receiving of this present articles they show & publish the said Indulgences and privileges to the people assigned unto them with out contradiction under the pain of excommunication. ¶ Also the foresaid Dane Clement beseecheth and prayeth the parsons & ministers of parish churches for the love of god & saint Katherine that they will whytsawfe to do these iii things following. ¶ first after such declaration of Indulgences made by them that the alms gathered that they will wytsaffe for to write every man & woman's name in there letter or confessonnall wan that be required. secondly that they deliver confessyonalles or letters testemonyalles for the said fraternity to all good christian people giving of their goods as their devotion or conscience giveth them. thirdly that they show to the people that they may enjoy these foresaid Indulgences not only by gyuyng● their alms in ready money but also by giving such other goods as god sendeth them. ¶ Commandment under the seal of our sovereign lord the king. ¶ Also our sovereign lord king Henry the viii by the grace of god king of England & of France & lord of Irelonde considering the great tribulation & sorrow of the said monastery as the writing of our holy father the pope testefyeth under lead & form of a breffe moved by the way of pity hath graciously granted the said Indulgences to be published throughout all his royalme under his letter patent & commendeth all officers & ministers of churches to rise up & gather such alms as shall be given unto them. And favourably give it to the said Dane Clement or his deputies. God save the king.
