¶ A compendious Somme of the very Christian religion: gathered faithfully out of holy scripture: necessary for all them that read the old and new Testament. ¶ This is my dearly beloved son/ for whose sake only I am appeased: him see that ye hear and obey. Esai. xlij. a. Mat. xiii. b. iij. c. &. xvij. a. Mar. j b. &. ix. a. Luc. iij. d. &. ix. e. ij. Pe. i c. ¶ Translated by George joy the year of our lord. M.D.xxxv. Jere. xviii. teacheth us/ that there is but one God almighty/ for all alone sufficient/ having neither beginning nor ending/ which of his own merciable goodness with his word created all things/ of whom all things proceed/ without whom there is no thing/ he is just and merciful/ it is he that worketh all things in every thing according unto his godly will: unto whom it is not lawful to say/ wherefore dost thou thus or thus? ¶ Furthermore/ The creation of ●an. it is to be known and constantly to be believed/ Genesis. i. this same our God almighty to have had created Adam the first man according unto the image and similitude conceived in his mind/ and to have had constitute him the lord over all the creatures in the earth. Sapien. two Roma. v. The which Adam thorough the envy of the devil/ sinew dysobaying the precept of his maker/ became first of all men sinner/ & brought in sin into this world/ yea & such one and so grievous a sin/ that we all/ which have been brought forth and begotten of him after the flesh/ be subjects & bond men to sin/ to death & damnation/ redacte and captived even under the tyrannous yoke of the devil. Ephesi. two. It is also to be perfectly known and steadfastly to be believed/ that of God the father/ our saviour Jesus christ his son was promised unto the said Adam/ unto Abraham Isaac/ Jacob/ david/ and unto the other fathers to deliver them from sin and from the tyranny of the devil/ & not only them but us also/ & as many as like them with a perfect and lively faith trust and cleave unto this promise and unto this same Jesus Chryst/ which hope & believe to obtain this deliverance/ is of him and thorough him only. Chryst was promised unto us. This promise is often times repeated Genesis. iii xii. xxvi. v xxviii and rehearsed in the books of Habre. two. the old Testament: ye & even that same old Testament is the very self covenant and promise: The old & new Testament. none otherwise then this called the new testament teacheth us the same promise now to be fulfilled. ¶ But yet while this health & deliverance then promised was waited & looked for of the father's/ the law the law whereby sin might be known was given. For verily/ such is the nature & disposition of man that not only he cannot/ but also he will not acknowledge & confess himself to be a sinner/ & namely that same sinner which hath need of this so holy & wholesome a promise. Exo. xi●. ●●● Rom. three v. The law therefore was given of God whereby men might know what thing sin is: ye & that then selves to be very sinners: seeing themselves with glad & ready will/ which God requireth to do nothing that the law commandeth/ but rather with an evil will without love/ but constrained there unto by fere of hell & pain which the law threateneth/ saying: Deu. xxvii Cursed be he that is not permanent whole & fast cleaving unto the commandments of the law to perform them in very deed. Galat. iii. This law therefore (I say) was given/ that thereby sin and the malice of man's heart once known/ men should the more fervently thirst for the coming of Christ/ which should redeem them from their sins: as it was figured unto the Jews by diverse ceremonies/ oblations/ & sacrifices prescribed & set forth of God before their eyes: not that these things should take away their sins/ but that they should admonish and teach them to be taken away in time to come by faith/ Hebr. ● & by that saving health promised in Chryst: which ceremonies/ oblations. etc. are now abolished & gone by the coming of Christ/ Mat. xvii. Joan. i. which is the very sacrifice & oblation only that apeaced the father's wrath & took away all sin. ¶ At the last/ Chryst our saviour is come. we are taught by the books of the new Testament which are the second part of the Bible: Luce. two. Galat. iiii. Ephesy. i. Roman. v▪ Tit●. iii. Ephesi. two. Roma. v. that Christ then promised & figured in the old Testament was sent us of the father at the time determined & appointed with himself/ Joan. i Esai. liii. i Joan. two. two. Petri. ●i. Luc. i. Hebreo. two. that is to weet even when all iniquity and sin most abounded & flowed over all. He was not sent for that any man by his own good deeds had deserved his coming (for all were sinners) but because he being so true of his promise would give us the plenteous riches of his grace & favour which he had promised us. In the new testament therefore it is plainly entreated & written/ that Jesus Christ the very lamb verily offered up is come/ The lamb sacrified up for us. to reconcile us unto our father/ paying upon the cross the pains dew for our sins/ to deliver us out of the bondage of the devil (whom we served in sin) & to get us to be the children of God/ Our peace giving us the very peace & tranquillity of mind/ Roma. v. Joan. three vi. that hence forth we fear no more hell/ which fere is put away by faith/ faith. confidence/ & firm adsured trust which out father giveth unto us allewring & drawing us unto his son. For faith is the gift of God/ whereby we believe Chryst to have had comen in to this world to save the sinners/ i. Timot. i i Joan. iii. which faith is of such power & of so great efficacy that who so have it/ they will cover & desire to do & perform according to the ensample of Christ all the offices and deeds of charity. two. Cori. i. ● For faith once received/ God giveth his holy spirit/ The holy ghost. by whom he conseygneth and marketh all that believe/ which spirit is the pledge & (as ye would say) the earnest penny certifying us to possede that life eternal/ ye and he testifieth unto our heart & spirit/ graffing there into such a faith that we are sure and certified that we be the children of God/ the spirit pouring therewith into our inward man that same charity charity & love which Paul describeth & setteth forth unto the Corinthians. i Cori. xiii. For this faythiss sake & confidence in Christ/ which is effectuous by charity/ showing herself clearly in the wor●●s of love/ exciting and moving man unto them. For this same faith is sake (I say) are we justified: that is to say/ the father of Christ (which also is become out father thorough Christ our brother) reckoneth us for righteous & for his own children of his own mere mercy and gracious favour not imputing unto us our sins. justification or ryghtwysmaking. Hebreo. ● two. Let us not therefore doubt/ all be it at any time we be sinners/ to step forth and come nigh unto him with confidence & trust with a lively & constant faith & believe to obtain mercy & grace. i. Timot. i. For doubtless therefore is he come/ even to save sinners/ neither doth he ask any thing else of us/ than that we should boldly go unto him. Mat. x●● The judgement ¶ This same verily is christ Jesus/ which after that he hath with the breath of his mouth slain the sinful man/ he shall sit into his glorious majesty to judge all men/ & to reward every man according as he hath here lived in his own body/ whether it be good or evil/ saying unto them that shall stand at his right hand: two. But unto them which shallbe at his left hand/ shall he say: avoid fro me ye cursed/ & go into that fire everlasting which is prepared for the devil & his angels. Then shall there be an end of this world/ & he shall deliver the kingdom unto God the father/ (the kingdom is here taken for the hole number of the elect) i Corin. xv ¶ To th'intent we might know this thing/ the holy scripture in the Bible/ by the goodness of God thorough his holy spirit is left & given us: two.
