But herein, the better for conceiving of my mind and instruction of yoors, ye must give me leave a little, as well to preface unto my matter, as to discoors somewhat of killing worth Castl. A Territory of the right honorable, my singular good Lord, my Lord the Earl of leicester: of whooz incomparabl cheering, and entertainment there unto her Majesty now, I will show you a part here, that cooled not see all, nor had I seen all cooled well report the hallf: Where things, for the parsons, for the place, time, cost, devisez, strangeness, and aboundauns of all that ever I saw (and yet have I been, what under my Master Bomsted, and what on my oun affairs, while I occupied merchandise, both in France and Flaunders (long and many a day) I saw none where so memorabl, I tell you plain. Too advantage hath it, hard on the West, still nourished with many lively Springs, a goodly Pool of rare beauty, breadth, length, depth, and store of all kind fresh water-fish, delicate, great and fat, and also of wildfooul beside. By a rare situation and natural amity seemz this Pool conjoined to the Castle that on the West layz the head as it wear upon the Castlz boosom, embraceth it on either side Soouth and North with both the armz, settlz itself as in a reach a flightshoot broad, stretching forth body and legs a mile or too Westward: between a fair Park on the one side, which by the Braiz is linked too the castl on the South, sprinkled at the entrauns with a few Coonyez, that for colour and smallness of number, seem too be suffered more for pleasure then commodity: And on the other side, North and West, a goodly Chase: waist, wide, large, and full of red Dear and other stately gamez for hunting: beautified with many delectabl, fresh & umbragioous Boowz, Arberz, Seatz, and walks, that with great art, cost, & diligens wear very pleazauntly appointed: which also the natural grace by the tall and fresh fragrant tréez & soil did so far forth commend, as Diana herself might have deigned there well enough too range for her pastime. The left arm of this pool Northward, had my Lord adoo●urned with a beautiful bracelet of a fair tymbred bridge, that is of xiiii. foot wide, and a six hundred foot long: railed all on both sidez, strongly planked for passage, reaching from the Chase too the Castl: that thus in the midst hath clear prospect over these pleasurz on the backpart: and forward, over all the town and much of the country beside. ON Saturday the ninth of july, at long Ichington, a Tooun and Lordship of my Lords, within a seven mile of Killingworth, his honour made her Majesty great cheer at Dinner, and pleazaunt pastime in hunting by the weigh after, that it was eight a clock in that evening ear her highness came too Killingwoorth. Where in the Park, about a flight shoot from the Brayz & first gate of the Castl, one of the ten Sibyls, that (we read) wear all Fatidicae and Theobulae▪ Sibyl. These armonious blasterz, from the foreside of the gate at her highness entrauns where they began: walking upon the wallz, unto the inner: had this muzik maintained from them very delectably while her highness all along this tiltyard road unto the inner gate next the base court of the Castl: where the Lady of the Lake (famous in king Arthurz book) with Lady of the Lake. too Nymphs waiting upon her, arrayed all in silks attending her highness coming: from the midst of the Pool, where, upon a moovabl Island, bright blazing with torches, she floating to land, met her Majesty with a well penned metre and matter after this sort: first of the ancienty of the Castl, who had been ownerz of the same e'en till this day, most allweyz in the hands of the Earls of leicester, hoow she had kept this Lake sins king Arthurz dayz, and now understanding of her highness hither coming, thought it both office and duty in humble wise to discover her and her estate: offering up the same, her Lake and poour therein, with promise of repair unto the Coourt. It pleazed her highness too thank this Lady, & too add withal, we had thought indeed the Lake had been oours, and do you call it yourz now? Well we will herein common more with you hereafter. This pageant was clozd up with a delectable harmony of Hautboiz, Shalmz, Corners, and such other looud muzik, that held on while her Majesty, pleazauntly so passed from thence toward the Castl gate: whereunto from the base Coourt over a dry valley cast into a good form, was there framed a fair Bridge of a twenty foot wide, The bridge. and a seventy foot long, gravelled for treading, railed on either part with seven posts on a side, that stood a twelve foot a sunder, Seven pair of posts. thikned between with well proportioned Pillars turned. Upon the first payr of posts were set, too comely square wire cagez, each a three foot long, too foot wide and hy: in them, live Bitters, Curluz, Shoovelarz, Hearsheawz, Godwitz, and such like dainty Birds of the sylvanus prezents. prezents of sylvanus the God of foul. On the second payr, too great silvered Bollz, featly apted too the purpose, filled with Applz, Pearz, Cherriz, Filberdz, Walnuts fresh upon their brawchez, and with Oranges, Pomegranates, Lemmanz, and Pipinz, all for the giftz of Pomona, Pomona. Gods of fruiez. The third pair of posts, in too such silvered Bollz, had (all in ears, green and old) Wheat, Barley, Ootz, Beanz and Peaz, as the gifts of Ceres. Ceres. 3. The fourth Post on the left hand, in a like silvered Boll, had Grapes in Clusters white and red, gracified with their Vine leavez: the match post against it, had a payr●● of great white silver livery Pots for wine: and before them two glassez of good capacity filled full: the ton with white Wine, the two other with claret: so fresh of colour, and of look so lovely smiling to the eyz of many, that by my faith me thought by their leering, they could have foound in their hearts (as the evening was hot) to have kissed them sweetly and thought it no sin: and these for the potencial prezents of Bacchus Bacchus. 4. the God of wine. The fift payr had, each a fair large trey streawd a little with fresh grass, and in them, Coonger, Burt, Mullet, fresh Herring, Oysters, Salmon, Crevice, and such like from Neptunus, God of the Sea. Neptunus. 5 On the sixth payr of Posts wear set two ragged stavez of silver, as my Lord givez them in armz, beautifully glittering of armour thereupon depending, Bowz, Arroz, Spearz, Shéeld, Head pées, Gorget, Corpse lets, Swords, Targets, and such like for Mars gifts the God of war. And the aptlyer Mars. 6. (me thought) was it that thooz ragged staves supported these Martial prezents, as well because these staves by their tines seem naturally meet for the bearing of armoour, as also that they chief in this place might take upon them principal protection of her highness Parson, that so benignly pleazed her to take harbour. On the seventh Posts, the last and next too the Castl, wear there pight, too fair Bay braunchez of a fourfoot hy, adorned on all sides with Lutes, Viollz, Shallmz, Cornets, Flutes, Recorders and haps, as the prezents of Phoebus the God of Muzik Phoebus. 7. for rejoicing the mind, and also of Phizik, for health to the body. Over the Castl gate was there fastened a Tabl beautifully garnished above with her highness arms, and featly with ivy wreathz b●ordred about: of a ten foot square: the ground black, whereupon in large white Capital Roman fair written: a Poem mentioning these Gods and their gifts thus prezented unto her highness: which, because it remained unremoved, at leisure & please I took it out, as followeth. Dij TIBI REGINA haec (cum SIS DIGNISSIMA) prebent: Haec TIBI cum Domino dedit se & werda Kenelmi All the letterz that mention her Majesty, which here I put capital, for reverens and honour wear there made in golld. But the night well spent, for that these veriez by Torchlight, cooled not easily be read, by a Poet therefore in a long ceruleoous garment, with 〈◊〉 side and wide sléevez Venetian wise, drawn up to his elboz, his Dooblet sleevez under that, Crimzen, nothing but silk: a Bay garland on hiz head, and a skro in his hand, making first an humble obeizaunz at her highness' coming, and pointing unto every prezent as he spoke: the same wear pronounced. Pleazauntly thus viewing the gifts as she passed, & hoow the postsmight agree with the speech of the Poet, at the éend of the bridge & entrée of the gate, was her highness received with a fresh delicate armony of Flutz, in perfourmauns of Phoebus' prezents. So passing into the inner Coourt, her Majesty (that never ridez but alone) there set down from her Pallfree, was conveyed up to chamber: when after, did folo so great a peal of gunz, and such lightning by fire work a long space together: as jupiter would sheaw himself too be no further behind with hiz welcum, than the rest of hiz Gods: and that would he have all the country to know: for indeed the noiz and flame wear h●ard and seen a twenty mile of. Thus much Master Martin (that I remember me) for the first daiz Bien venu. Be ye not weary, for I am scant in the midst of my matter. On sunday: the forenoon occupied (as Sunday. for the Sabot day) in quiet and vacation from work, & in divine servis & preaching at the parish church: The afternoon in excellent muzik, of sundry sweat instruments and in dancing of Lords & Ladiez, and other worshipful degrees, uttered with such lively agility & commendabl grace: az whither it moought be more strange too the eye, or pleazunt too the mind, for my part indeed I cooled not discern: but exceedingly well was it (me thought) in both. At night late, as though jupiter the last night, had forgot for biziness, or forborn for curtezy & quiet, part of hiz wellcoom unto her highness appointed: now entering at the first into his purpoze moderately (az mortallz do) with a warning peep or too, proceeding on with increases, at last the Alticonant displ●az me his main poour: with blaz of burning darts, flying too & fro, leamz of stars coruscant, streamz and hail of fiery sparks, lightnings of wildfier a water and land, flight & shoot of thunderboltz: all with such countinauns, terror and vehemency: that the heavens thundered, the waters soourged, the earth shook: and in such sort surly, as had we not be assured of the fulminant deity was all hot in amity, and could not otherwize witness his welcoming unto her highness: it would have made me for my part, as hardy as I am, very veangeably afeard. This a do lasted while h● midnight was past, that well was me soon after when I was caught in my cabin. And this for the second day. Monday was hot, and therefore her Monday. 3. highness kept in ● till a five a clock in the éevening: what time it pleazzd her too ride forth into the Chase too hunt the heart of for'rs: which foound anon, and after sore chased, and chafed by the hot The hunting of the Hare of force. pursuit of the hooundes, was fain of fine for'rs, at last to take soil. There to beholld the swift fleeting of the Dear afore with the stately carriage of hiz head in his swimming, spread (for the quantity) like the sail of a ship: the hoounds harroing after, as they had been a number of skiphs too the spoil of a carvel: the ton no less eager in purchaz of his pray, then was the the other earnest in safeguard of hiz life: so as the earning of the hoounds in continuauns of their cry, the swiftness of the Dear, the running of footmen, the galloping of horsez, the blasting of hornz, the hallowing & hewing of the huntsmen, with the excellent Echoz between whilez from the woods and waters in valleiz resonnding, moved pastime delectabl in so hy a degree, as for parson to take pleasure by mo●st sensez at onez, in mine opinion there can be none weigh comparable to this: And special in this place that of nature is formed so feet for the purpose in faith Master Martin if ye cooled with a wish I would ye had been at it: Well the heart was killed, a goodly Dear, but so ceased not the game yet. For aboout nine a clock at the hither part of the Chase, where torchlight attended: out of the woods in her Maiestiez return, rooughly came there forth Hombre The savage man. Saluagio, with an Oaken plant plucked up by the roots in his hand, himself forgrone all in moss and ivy: who, for parsonage, gesture, and veterauns beside, coountenaunst the matter too very good liking, and had speech to effect: That continuing so long in these wild wastes, wherein oft had he fared both far and near, yet happed he never to see so glorioous an assemble afore: and now cast into great grief of mind, for that neither by himself cooled he guess, nor knew where else to be taught, what they should be, or who bare estate. Reports sum had he hard of many strange things, but brooyled thereby so much the more in desire of knowledge. Thus in great pangz bethought he & called he upon all his familiarz & companionz: the Fawnz, the satires, the Nymphs, the Drya●des, & the Hamadryades, but none making answer, whereby his care the more increasing, in utter grief & extréem refuge called he allowed at last after his old friend Echo that he witted would hide nothing from him, but tell him all if she wear here. Here (quoth Echo.) Here, Echo and Echo. art thou there? (sayz he) Ah hoow much hast thou relieved my careful spirits with thy curtezy onward. A my good Echo hér is a marueiloouz prezenz of dignity, what are they I pray thee, who is Sovereign, tell me I beseech thee, or elz how moought I know? I know (quoth she). Know'st thou sayz he; Marry that is exceedingly well: why then, I dezire thee heartily to sho me what Majesty (for no mean degree is it) have we here: a King or a Queen? A Queen (quoth Echo.) A Queen sayez he? Pauzing and wis●ly viewing a while, now full certainly seemez thy tale to be true. And proceeding by this manner of dialog with an earnest beholding her highness a while, recounts he first hoow justly that fo●rmer reports agree with his present sight: touching the beautiful linaments of coountinauns, the comely proportion of body, the prinsly grace of prezenz, the graciouz giftz of nature with the rare and singular qualities of both body and mind in her Majesty comoynd, and so apparent a● eye. Then shortly rehearsing Saterdaiz acts: of Sibyls salutation, of the Porter's proposition, of hiz Trumpetoours muzik, of the Lake ladiez oration, of the seven Gods seven prezents: he reporteth the incredible joy that all estatez in the land have allweyz of her highness where so ever it comes: éendeth with presage and prayer of perpetual felicity, and with humble subjection of him and hizzen & all that they may do. After this sort the matter went with little differens I guess, saving only in this point: that the thing which here I report in unpolished proez, was there pronounced in good meeter and matter, very well indited in rhyme. Echo finely framed most aptly by answerz thus to utter all. And I shall tell you master Martin by the mass of a mad adventure? as this Savage for the more submission broke his tree a sunder, kest the top from him, it had almost light upon her highness horse he●d: whereat he startld and the gentleman much dismayed, See the benignity of the Prins, as the foot men looked well too the horse, and he of Generositée soon callmd of himself, no hurt no hurt quoth her highness. Which words I promise you we wear all glad to here, & cook them too be the best part of the play. Tuisday, pleazaunt passing of the time Tuisday. 4. with muzik & dancing: saving that toward night it liked her Majesty too walk a foot into the Chase over the Bridge: where it pleased her to stand, while upon the Pool oout of a Barge fine appointed for the purpose, too here sundry kinds of very delectabl Muzik. Thus recreated & after sum wallk her highness returned. Wednsday, her Majesty road into the Wedns. 5. chase a hunting again of the heart of forhis. The Deer after his property for refuge took the soil: but so mastered by hot● pursuit on all parts that he was taken quick in the pool: the watermen held him up hard by the head, while at her highness commandment The heart pardoned. he lost his ears for a raundsum and so had pardon of life. Thursday, the foourteenth of this july Thursday. 6 and the sixth day of her Maiestyez coming: a great sort of bandogs where there tied in the utter Coourt, and thirteen bearz in the inner. whosoever made the A queast of Bearz. ●annell, there wear inoow for a Queast & one for challenge & need we ar. A wight of great wizdoom and gravity seemed their foreman to be, had it come to a jury: But it fell out that they wear cauzd too appear there upon no such matter, but only too answer too an ancient quarrel between them and the bandogs, in a cause of controversy that hath long depended, been obstinately full often debated with sharp and biting arguments a both sides, and cooled never be decided: grown now too so marvelous a malice, that with spiteful obrayds and uncharitabl chaffing alweiz they fret, as far as any where the ton can here, see, or smell the tother: and indeed at utter deadly fohod. Many a maimed member, (God wots) bloody face & a torn cote hath the quarrel cost between them, so far likely the less yet now too be appeazd, as there wants not partakerz too back them a both sidez. Well sir, the Bearz wear brought forth into the Coourt, the Dogs set too them, too argu the points even face too face, they had learned counsel also a both parts: what may they be coounted partial that are retained but a to side? I wéen no. Very féers both ton and toother & eager in argument if the dog in pleading would pluck the bear by the throat, the bear with travers would claw him again by the skaip, confess & a list, but a void a cooled not that was bound too the bar: and his coounsell told him that it cooled be too him no policy in pleading. Therefore thus with fending & proving, with plucking & tugging, skratting & biting, by plain tooth & nayll a to side & toother such exspens of blood & leather was there between them, as a moonths licking I wéen will not recoover: and yet remain as far out as ever they wear. It was a sport very pleazaunt of these beastz: to see the bear with his pinks nyez leering after hiz enmiez approach, the nimblness & wait of the dog too take his advantage, and the for'rs & experiens of the bear again to avoid the assauts: if he wear bitten in one place, hoow he would pinch in an other too get free: that if he wear taken onez, then what shift with biting with clawing, with roaring tossing & tumbling he would work too wind himself from them: and when he was lose, to shake his ears twice or thrice with the blood & the slaver aboout hiz fiznamy, was a matter of a goodly relief. Az this sport was had a day time in the Gunshot & fyrework. Castl, so was there abroad at night very strange and sundry kindez of fire works, compelled by cunning too fly too and fro and too moount very by into the ay● upward, and also too burn unquenshabl in the water beneath: contrary ye wots, too fyerz, kind. This intermingld with a great peal of guns: which all gave, both too the ear and to the eye the greater grace and delight, for that with such order and art they wear tempered touching time and continuauns, that was about too hours space. Noow within also in the mean time Tumbling of the Italian. was there sheawed before her highness, by an Italian, such feats of agilitice, in goings, turnings, tumblings, castinges, hops, jumps, leaps, skips, springs, gamband, soomersauts, caprettiez and flights: forward, backward, side wise, ● doownward, upward, and with sundry windings gyring and circumflexions: also lightly and with such easiness, as by me in few words it is not expressibl by pen or speech I tell you plain. I blessed me by my faith to behold him, and began to doout whither a was a man or a sp●rite, and I wéen had doouted me till this day: had it not been that anon I bethought me of men that can reason & talk with too tongues, and with too parsons at onez, sing like burds, curteiz of behaviour, of body strong and in joints so nymbl withal, that their bonez seem az lythie and pliant as syneuz. They dwell in a happy Island (as the book tearmz it) four moonths sailing Southward beyond Ethiop. Nay Master Martin I tell you no jest: Diodor. Sicul. De anti. Gesneri. reporteth the same. Az for thiz fellow I cannot tell what too make of him, save that I may guess his back be metalld like a Lamprey that has no bone but a line like to a Lute string. Well sir let him pass and hiz featz, and this dayz pastime withal, for here is as much as I can remember me for Thursdaiz entertainment. Friday and Saturday wear there no open Friday. sheawz abroad, because the weather Saturday. 8. inclined too sum moister & wind: that very seazonably tempered the drought and the heat, cauzed by the continuans of fair weather & sunshine afore, all the while sins her Maiestiez thither coming. A Sunday opportunely the weather Sunday. 9 broke up again, and after divine servis in the parish church for the sabbath day, and a fruitful sermon there in the forenoon: at after noon in worship of this kenelwoorth Castl, and of God & saint kenelm, whooz day forsooth by the calendar, this was: a brydeale of a proper coopl Bridal. was appointed: set in order in the tyltyard, too cum and make there show before the Castl in the great court, where az was pight a comely quintine for featz at armz which when they had done, too march out: at the northgate of the Castl homeward again into the tooun. And thus were they marshalled. first, all the lusty lads and bolld bachelarz of the parish, suitably every wight with hiz blu buckram bridelace upon a branch of green broom (cauz rozemary iz scant there) tied on his left arm (for a that side lyez the heart) and his alder poll for a spear in his right hand, in martial order ranged on a fore, too & too in a rank: sum with a hat, sum in a cap, sum a cote sum a jerkin, sum for lightness in hiz dooblet & his hoze, clean trust with a point afore: sum boats & no spurs, he spurs & no boots, and he neither nother: one a saddle, another a pad or a panel fastened with a cord, for girds wear geazon: and these to the number of a sixtéen wight riding men and well beséen: but the bridegroom foremost, in his fatherz tawny worsted jacket, (for his friends wear fayn that he should be a bridegroom before the Queen) a fair strawn hat with a capital crown stéepl wise on hiz head: a payr of harvest glovez on hiz hands, as a sign of good husbandry: a pen & inkorn at his back. for he would be known to be bookish lame of a leg that in his yooth was broken at football: well beloved yet of his mother that lent him a nu mufflar for a napkin that was tied too his gyrdl for lozing: It was no small sport too mark this minion in his full appointment, that throogh good ●coolation became as formal in his action as had he been a bridegroom indeed: with this special grace by the weigh, that ever as he would have framed him the better countenauns, with the worse face he look. Well sir, after these horsemen, a lively morisoauns, according too the ancient manner, six daunserz, Mawdmarion, and the fool. Then, three pretty puzels as bright as a breast of bacon, of a thirty year old a pées, that carried three special spisecakes of a bushel of wheat, (they had it by measure out of my Lord's backhouse,) before the Bride: Syzely with set countenauns, and lips so demurely simpering, as it had been a Mare cropping of a thistl. After these a lovely loober woorts, freklfaced, red headed, clean trust in his dooblet & his hoze taken up now in deed by commission, for that he was so loath to come forward, for reverens belike of hiz nu cut canvas dooblet: & would by his good will have been but a gazer, but found too be a meet actor for hiz offis: that was to bear the bridecup, formed of a sweet sucket barrel, a fair turned foot set too it, all seemly be silvered and parcel gilded, adorned with a beatiful branch of broom, gaily begilded for rosemary: from which, too broad brydelaces of red and yelloo buckram begilded, and galauntly streaming by such wind as there was (for he carried it aloft:) This jennet cupbearer, yet had his freckled fiznemy somewhat unhappily infested az he went by the byzy flyez, that floct about the bride cup for the sweetness of the sucket that it savoured on: but he like a tall fellow, withstood their mallis stoutly (see what manhood may do) bet them away, killed them by scores, stood to his charge and marched on in good order. Then folloed the worshipful Bride, led (after the country manner) between too ancient parishionerz, honest toounsmen. But a stolen stallion and a well spread, (hot az the weather was) God wots, and an ill smelling was she: a thirty year old, of colour brounday, not very beautiful in deed but ugly fooul ill favoured: yet marvelous fain of the offis, because she hard say she should dauns before the Queen, in which feat she thought she would foot it as finely as the best: Well, after this bride came there by too and too, a dozen damsels for bridemaides: that for favour, attire, for fashion and cleanliness: were as meet for such a bride as a tréen ladl for a porige pot: more, but for fear of carring all clean had been appointed: but theez few wear inoow. Az the company in this order wear cum into that court, marvelous wear the martial acts that wear done there that day. The bridegroom for preeminens Running at Quintine. had the first coors at the quintine, broke his spear treshardiment: but his mare in hiz manage did a little so titubate. that much a do had his manhood to sit in his sadl, & too scape the foil of a fall: with the help of his band yet he recooverd himself, and lost not his styrops (for he had none too his saddl): had no hurt as it happed, but only that his girt burst, and lost his pen & inkorn that he was ready to wep for. But his handkerchief, as good hap was, found he safe at his gyrdl: that chéerd him somewhat, & had good regard it should not be field. For though heat & coolness upon sundry occazions made him sometime too sweat, and sometime eumatick: yet durst he be bollder too blo hiz noze & wipe his face with the flapet of his fatherz jacket, then with his mother's mufflar. tiz a goodly matter, when yooth is mannerly brought up in fatherly love & motherly awe. Noow sir, after the bridegroom had made his coors, ran the rest of the band a while in sum order, but soon after, tag and rag, cut & long tail: where the specialty of the sport was, to see: how sum for hiz slakness had a good bob with the bag, and sum for his haste too toppl down right, & cum tumbling to the post: sum striving so much at the first setting out, that it seemed a question between the man & the beast, whither the coors should be made a horseback or a foot: and put forth with the spurs, then would run his race bias among the thickest of the throng, that down came they together hand over head: another, while he directed his coors to the quintine, hiz iument would carry him too a mare amoong the pepl: so his horse as amoroos, as himself adventuroous. Another, too run & miss the quintine with hiz staff, and hit the board with his head. Many such gay gamez wear there among these ryderz: who by & by after, upon a greater courage left there quintining, and ran one at another. There to see the stern countenauns, the grim looks, the cooragioous attempts, the desperate adventurez, the daungeroous coor●sez, the féers encoounterz, whereby the buff at the man, and the coounterbuff at the horse, that both sometime came topling to the ground. By my troth Master Martin twaz a lively pastime, I believe it would have moved sum man too a right merry mood, thoogh had it be toold him his wife lay a dying. And hereto folloed as good a sport (me Hok Tuisday by the Coventry men. thooght) prezented in an historical ku, by certain good hearted men of Coventry, my lords neighboors there: who understanding amoong them the thing that cooled not be hidden from : hoow careful and studious his honour was, that by all pleazaunt recreasions her highness might best find herself welcome, and be made gladsum and merry (the groundwork indeed and foundation of hiz Lordship's mirth and gladness of us all) made petition that they moought renu now their old storiall show: Of argument how the Danez whilom here in a troubloous season Florileg. li. 1. fol. 300. wear for quietness born withal & suffeard in pease, that anon by outrage & importabl insolency, abuzing both Ethelred the king then and all estates every where beside: at the grevoous complaint & counsel of Huna the king's chieftain in warz, on Saint brice's night. And for because the matter mentioneth how valiantly our English women for love of their cuntrée behaved themselves: expresse● in actionz & rymez after their manner, they thought it moought move sum mirth to her Majesty the rather. The thing said they is grounded on story, and for pastime wont too be played in oour city yearly: without ill exampl of mannerz, papistry, or superstition: and else did so occupy the heads of a number, that likely inoough would have had woorz meditationz: had an ancient beginning and a long continuauns: till now of late laid down, they knu no cauz why onless it wear by the zeal of certain their Preacherz: men very commendabl for their behaviour and learning, & sweet in their sermons, but somewhat too sour in preaching away their pastime: wished therefore, that as they should continu their good doctrine in pulpit, so, for matters of policy & governauns of the City, they would permit them to the Mair and Magistratez: and sey●d by my faith, Master Martin, they , 〈◊〉 I pr●●… 〈◊〉 by profession a 〈◊〉 and that right skilful, very cunning in ●ens, and hardy as Gavin, for his tonsword hangs at his tablz éend: great oversight hath he in matters of story: For as for king Arthurz book, Huon of Burdeaus, The foour suns of Aymon, bevis of Hampton, The squire of lo degree, The knight of courtesy, and the Lady Faguell, Frederik of Gene, Sir Eglamoour, Sir Tryamoour, Sir Lamwell, Sir Isenbras, Sir Gavin, Oliver of the Castl, Lucres and Euryalus, Virgil's life, The castl of Ladiez. Then in Philosophy both moral & natural, I think he be as naturally overséen: beside poetry and Astronomy, and other hid sciencez, as I may guess by the omberty of his books: whereof part as I remember, the Sheperdz calendar. The Ship of Foolz, Danielz dreamz, the book of Fortune, Stans puer ad mensam, the hy weigh to the Spitlhouse, julian of Brainfords' testament, the castle of Love, the booget of Demands, the hundred Merry talez, the book of Riddles, the Seven sororz of women, the proved wives Pater noster, the Chapman of a peniwoorth of Wit: Beside his ancient playz. And as for Allmanaks of antiquity, (a point for Ephemerides) I ween he can sheaw from jasper Laet of An●warp unto Nostradam of France, and thence unto oour john Securiz of Salisbury. To stay ye no longer herein I dare say he hath as fair a library for these sciencez, & as many goodly monuments both in proze & poetry & at afternoonz can talk as much without book, as Inholder betwixt Brainford and Bagshot, what degree soever he be. Beside this in the field a good Marshal at musters: of very great credit & trust in the town here, for he has been chozen Alecunner many a year, when his betterz have stand by: & ever quited himself with such estimation, as yet too the taste of a cup of Nippitate, his judgement will be taken above the best in the parish, be his noze near so re●d. Captain Cox came marching on valiantly before, clean trust & gartered above the knee, all fresh in a velvet cap (master Goldingan lent it him) flourishing with his tonswoord, and another fensmaster with him: thus in the forward making room for the rest. After them proudly pricked on foremost, the danish launsknights on horseback, and then the English: each with their alder poll martially in their hand. even at the The coventry play. first entrée the meeting waxed somewhat warm: that by and by kindled with courage a both sidez, gru from a hot skirmish unto a blazing battle: first by spear and shield, outrageous in their racez as ramz at their rut, with furious encoounterz that together they tumbl too the dust, sometime horse and man: and after fall too it with sword & target, good bangz a both sidez: the fight so ceasing, but the battle not so ended, folloed the footmen, both the hostez ton after tother: first marching in ranks: then warlike turning, then from ranks into squadrons, then in too trianglz from that into rings, & so winding out again: A valiant captain of great prowez as fires as a fox assauting a gooz, was so hardy to give the first stroke: then get they grisly together: that great was the activity that day too be seen there a both sidez: ton very eager for purchaz of pray, tother utterly stoout for redemption of liberty: thus, quarrel inflamed fury a both sidez. Twice the Danes had the better, but at the last conflict, beaten down, overcome and many led captive for triumph by our English women. This was the effect of this show, that 〈…〉 and unruliness of the people, was cauz that this solemnity of Bridal, & dancing had not the full muster was hoped for: and but a little of the Coventry ple● her highness also saw: commanded therefore on the Tuisday following to have it full out: as accordingly it was prezented, whearat her Majesty laughed well: they wear the iocunder, and so much the more becauz her highness had given them too bucks and five mark in money to make merry together: they prayed for her Majesty, long, happily to reign & oft to come thither that oft they moought see here: & what, rejoicing upon their ample reward, and what, triumphing upon the good acceptauns: they vaunted their play was never so dignified, nor ever any players afore so beatified. Thus though the day took an éend, yet slipped not the night all sleeping away: for as neither offis nor obsequy ceased at any time too the full, to perform the plot hiz honour had appointed: So, after supper was there a play prezented of a very good theme, but so set forth by the Actoourz well handling that pleasure & mirth made it seem very short, though it lasted too good oourz and more. But stay master Martin all is not done yet. After the play out of hand, folloed a most delicioouz and (if I may so term it) an Ambrosial Banquet: whereof, whither I might more muse at the deintynesse, shapez and the cost: or else at the variety & number of the disshez (that wear a three hundred) for my part I cooled little tell them, and now less I assure you. Her majesty eat smally or nothing: which understood, the coorsez wear not so orderly served & sizely set down, but wear by and by as disorderly wasted & coorsly consumed, more courtly me thought then courteously. But that was no part of the matter, moought it pleaz and be liked & do that it came for, then was all well enough. Unto this banquet there was appointed a mask: for riches of array, of an incredible cost: but the time so far spent and very late in the night now, was cauz that it came not forth to the show. And thus for Sondayz season having stayed you the longer (according too the matter) here make I an end: ye may breathe ye a while. Monday the eighteenth of this july, Monday. 10 the weather being hot, her highness kept the Castl for coolness, till aboout five a clock her Majesty in the Chase, hunted the heart (az afore) of for'rs: that whither wear it by the cunning of the huntsmen, or by Psal. 24. the natural desire of the Deer, or else by both: anon he got him too soil again, which reyzed the accustomed delight: a pastime indeed so entirely pleazaunt, as whereof at times who may have the full and free fruition, can find no more satiety (I wéen) for a recreation, then of their good v●aundes at timezes for their sustentation. Wéll, the game was gotten, and her highness returning: came there upon a swimming Mermaid (that from top too tail was an eyghtéen foot long) Triton Neptune's blaster: who, with his trumpet formed of a wrinkld wealk as her Majesty was in sight, gave soound very shrill & sonoroous, in sign he had an embassy too pronoouns: anon her highness was cummen upon the bridge whereunto he made his fish to swim the swifter, and he then declared: how the supreme salsipotent Monarch Neptune, the great God of the swelling seize, Prius of profundities, and Sooverain signor of all Lakez, freshwaterz, Riverz, creeks, & Goolphs: understanding how a cruel Knight, one sir Bruse sauns pity, a mortal enemy unto Ladiez of estate, had long lain about the banks of this pool in wait with his bands here to distress the Lady of the lake, whereby she hath been restrained not only from having any use of her ancient liberty and territoriez in these parts: but also of making repair & giving attendauns unto you noble Qnéen (qd. he) as she would, she promised, and also should: doth therefore signify: and hereto, of you as of his good leag. and dear friend make this request, that ye will deyn but too sheaw your parson toward this pool, whereby your only prezens shall be matter sufficient of abandoning this vucurtess knight, and putting all his bands too flight, & also of deliverances of the lady oout of this thraldom. Moving herewith from the bridge & fleeting more into the pool, chargeth he in Neptune's name: both Colus with all his windez, the waters with his springs, his fish & fooul, and all his clients in the same, that they ne be so hardy in any forhis too stur, but keep them calm & quiet while this Queen be prezent. At which petition her highness staying, it appeerd strait how sir Bruse became unseen, his bands scaled, and the Lady by and by, with her too Nymphs, floating upon her movable islands (Triton on his mermaid skimming by) approached toward her highness on the bridge: as well too declare that her Maiestiez prezens hath so graciously thus wrought her deliverances, as also to excuse her not coming to court as she promised, and chiefly to prezent her Majesty (as a token of her duty & good heart) for her highness recreation with thiz gift, which was Arion that excellent & famouz Muzicien, in tire & appointment strange well seeming too his parson, riding aloft upon his old friend the Dolphin, (that from head too tail was a foour & twenty foot long) & swymd hard by these islands: herewith Arion for theez great benefitez, after a few well coouched words unto her Majesty of thanksgiving, in supplement of the same: began a delectabl ditty of a song well apted too a melodious noiz, compoounded of six several instruments all covert, casting soound from that Dolphin's belly within, Arion the seventh sitting thus singing (as I say) withoout. Noow sir, the ditty in mitre so aptly endighted to the matter, and after by voice so delicioously delivered: the song by a skilful artist into his parts so sweetly sorted: each part in hiz instrument so clean & sharply toouched, every instrument again in his kind so excellently tunabl: and this in the éeving of the day, resoounding from the callm waters: where prezens of her Majesty & longing too listen had utterly damped all noyz & din: the hole armony conveyed in time, tune, & temper thus incomparably melodious: with what pleasure (Master Martin) with what sharpness of conceit, with what lively delight this moought pears into the hearers hearts: I pray ye imagine your self as ye may, for so God judge me, by all the wit & cunning I have, I cannot express, I promise you. Mais ieo bien vieu cela Monseur, que fort grand est la powoyr qu'auoit la tresnoble Science de music sur les esprites humains. perceive ye me? I have told ye a great matter now. As for me surely I was lulled in such liking & so loath too leave of, that much a do a good while after, had I, to find me where I was. And take ye this by the way, that for the small skill in muzik, that God hath sent me (ye know it is somewhat) i'll set the more by myself while my name is Langham, and grace a God. A, muzik is a noble Art. A, stay a while, see a short wit: by my troth I had almost forgot. This day was a day of grace beside, wherein wear advanced five Gentlemen of worship unto the degree of knighthood, Sir Thomas Cecyl, sun & heir unto the right honorable Knights made. the Lord Treazorer, Sir Henry Cobham, brother unto the Lord Cobham, Sir Thomas Stanhop, Sir Arthur Basset, and Sir Thomas Tresham: and also by her highness accustomed mercy & charity, nine cured of the painful and dangerous diseaz, called the kings evil, for that Kings & Quéenz of this Realm, withoout other medsin (save only by handling & prayerz) only do cure it: bear with me, though perchauns I place not thoz Gentlemen in my recital here, after their estatez: for I am neither good heraud of armez, nor yet know how they are set in the Subsydy bookez. Men of great worship I understand they are all. Tuisday, according to commandment, Tuisday. 11 came oour Coventry men. what their matter was, of her highness mirth and good acceptauns, and reward unto them, and of their rejoicing thearat, I sheawd you afore, and so say the less now. Wednesday in the forenoon, preparation Wedns. 12. was in hand for her Majesty too have supped in Wedgeno●, a three mile west from the Castl. A goodly park of the Quéenz Maiestyez: for that cauz, a fair Pavilion, and other provision accordingly thither sent & prepared: but by meanz of weather not so clearly disposed, the matter was countermanded again. That had her highness happened this day too have cummen abroad: there was made ready a devise of Goddessez & Nymphs: which as well for the ingenious argument, as for the well handling of it in rhyme & endighting would undooutedly have gained great liking & moved no less delight. Of the particular itéez, whereof I cease to entreat: lest like the boongling carpenter, by missorting the péecez, I mar a good frame in the bad setting up, or by my fond tempering afore hand embleamish the beauty, when it should be reared up in deed. A this day also was there such earnest tallk & appoincment of removing that I gave over my noting, and hearkened after my horse. Marry sir I must tell you: Az all endevoour was too move mirth & pastime (as I told ye): even so a ridiculoous devise of an ancient minstrel, & his song was prepared to have been proffered, if meet time & place had been foound for it. Onhis in a worshipful company, where full appointed, he recoounted his matter in sort as it shoould have been uttered, I chanced too be: what I noted, here thus I tell you: A parson very meet seemed he for the purpose, of a xlv years old appareled partly as he would himself. Hiz cap of: his head seemly roounded tonster wyze: fair combed that with a sponge deintly dipped in a little capons greaz was finely smoothed too make it shine like a Mallards' wing. Hiz bear smugly shaven: and yet his shirt after the nu tri●k, with ruffs fair starched, sléeked, and glistering like a payr of nu shooz: marshalled in good order: with a ●fetling stick, and stoout that every ruff stood up like a wafer: a side gooun of kendal green, after the freshness of the year now, gathered at the neck with a narro gorget, fastened afore with a white clasp and a kéepar close up to the chin: but easily for heat too undo when he list: seemly begirt in a red caddiz gyrdl: from that a payr of capped Sheffeld knivez hanging a to side: Out of his bosom drawn forth a lappet of his napkin, edged with a blu lace, & marked with a truloove, a heart, and ●●a D. for Damian: for he was but a bachelor yet. Hiz gooun had side sleevez dooun to midlegge, slit from the shooulder too the hand & lined with white cotton. Hiz doobled sleevez of black worsted, upon them a a payr of poynets of tawny Chamblet laced a long the wrest with blu threeden points, a wealth toward the hand of fustian anapes: a payr of red neatherstocks: a pair of pumps on his feet with a cross cut at the toze for cornz: not nu indeed, yet cleanly blakt with soot, & shining as a shoing horn. Aboout hiz nek a red rebon dsutable too his girdl: his harp in good grace dependaunt before him: his wrest tied to a green lace and hanging by: under the gorget of hiz gooun a fair flagon cheyn (pewcer, for silver) as a squire minstrel of Middilsex, that travailed the cuntrée this summer season unto fairz & worshipful men's hoousez: from his chain hung a Schoochion, with metal & cooler resplendent upon his breast of the ancient armez of Islington: upon a question whereof: he, as one that was well schooled, & cooled his lesson perfect without book too answer at full, if question wear asked him, declared: hoow the worshipful village of Istington in Middelsex, well knooens too be one of the most ancient and best toounz in England next London at thiz day: for the faithful friendship of long time sheawed as well at Cookez feast in Aldersgate street yearly upon holy Rood day, as also at all bridalez in the city of London all the year after: in well serving them of furmenty for porridge, not oversod till it be too weak: of milk for their flawnez, not piled nor chalked: of cream for their custards, not frothed nor thykned with floour: and of butter for their pastiez, and pyepast, not made of well curds, nor gathered of whey in summer: nor mingled in winter with salt butter watered or washed, did obtain long ago thez worshipful armez in cooler & form as ye see: which are the armz a field argent, as the field and ground in deed, wherein the milkwivez of thiz worthy tooun, and every man else in his faculty doth trade for his living: on a Fess Tenny three platez between three milk tankards proper. The three milk tankards, as the proper vessel wherein the substauns, and matter of their trade is too and fro transported. The Fess Tenny, which is a cooler betokening doubt & suspicion: so as suspicion & good heed taking, as well to their markets & servants, as to their customers that they trust not too far: may bring unto them platez, that is coynnd silver: three, that is sufficient and plenty, for so that number in Armoury may well signify. For Crest upon a wad of oat straw for a wreath, a bowl of furmenty: Wheat (az ye know) is the most precious gift of Ceres, and in the midst of it, sticking a The hornspoonz. dozen ●● hornspoonz in a bunch as the instruments meetest too eat furmenty porridge withal: a dozen, as a number of plenty complete for full cheer or a banquet, and of horn, as of a substauns more estimabl than is made for a great deel: being neither so churlish in weight as is metal: nor so froward and brittl to manure, as stone, nor yet so soily in use nor roough to the lips as wood is: but light, pliant, and smooth, that with a little licking wool allweiz be kept as clen as a die. With your paciens Gentlemen (quoth the minstrel) be it said: wear it not in deed that hornz be so plenty, hornware I believe would be more set by than it is, and yet are there in our parts that will not stick too avoow, that many an honest man both in city and cuntrée hath had his house by horning well uphollden, and a daily friend also at need. And this with your favour may I further affirm: a very ingenioous parson was he, that for dignity of the stuff, cooled thus by spooning devise, to a●uauns the horn so near too the head. With great congruens also wear these hornspoonz put too the wheat: as a token and portion of Cornucopia, the horn of Achelous, which the Naiads did fill with ovid. met. lib. 9 all good frutez, corn & grain: & after did consecrate unto abooundauns and plenty. This skoochion with beastz very aptly agreeing both to the armz and to the trade of the bearerz, glorioously supported, Between a grey Mare (a beast meetest for carrying of mylktankards) her panel on her back, as alwayz ready for servis at every feast and bridal at need, her tail splayed at most eaz: and her fool, fallo and a flaxen mane after the sire. In the skro undergraven (quoth he) is there a proper word, an hemistichis, well squaring with all the rest, taken out of Salerns' Salern. ca chapter, of things that most nourish man's body: Lac, Caseus infans. That is good milk and young chéez. And thus much Gintlmen, and pleaz you (quoth he). for the armz of oour worshipful tooun. And thearwithal made a mannerly leg, and so held his pease. Az the company pawzed and the minstrel sémde to gape after a praiz for hiz Beauparlar: and bicauz he had rendered his lesson so well: Saiz a good fellow of the company, I am sorry to see how much the poor minstrel mistakez the matter: for indeed the armezes are thus. with a 〈◊〉, ●●…king with her 〈◊〉 for flyez, and her 〈…〉 n●ying after the dam for suk. This word La●, Caseus infans. That is, a fresh cheezes and cream, & the common cry that these milkwivez make in London streets yearly, betwixt Easter and whitsuntide: and this is the very matter I know it well enough, and so ended his tale, and sat him down again. Héerat every man laughed a good, save the minstrel: that thoogh the fool wear made privy, all was but for sport, yet too see himself thus crossed with a contrary ku that he looked not for, would strait have geen over all, waxed very wayward, eager and soour: how be it last by sum entreaty & many fair words, with sak & sugar, we sweetened him again, and after became as merry as a pie. Appeerez then a fresh, in his full formality with a lovely loock: after three loly cooursiez, cleared his vois with a hem and a reach, and spat out withal, wiped his lips with the hollo of his hand, for filing his napkin, tempered a string or too with his wrest: and after a little warhling on hiz harp for a prelude, came forth with a solemn song, warraunted for story out of king Aurthurz acts, the first book King Arthur's book. and 26. chapter, whereof I gate a copy, and that is this. SO it befell upon a Penticost day, When king Arthur at Camelot kept court rial, With his comely Queen dame Gaynoour the gay. And many bolld Barons sitting in hall, Ladies apparaild in purpl and pall, When herauds in hukes harried full by largesse largesse chevaliers treshardy. ¶ A doouty Dwarf too the uppermost deas Right partly 'gan prick and kneeling on knee, With steeven full stoout amids all the preas, Said hail sir king, God thee save and see, King Ryens of Northgalez greeteth well thee, And bids that thy beard anon thou him send, Or else from thy iawz he will it of rend, ¶ For his rob of state, a rich scarlet mantel, With a leaven kings beards bordered about, He hath made late, and yet in a cantle 〈…〉, Lordz begun too 〈◊〉, 〈◊〉 stamped, squirez startld as stéedz in a stoour. Yeem●n and pagez yield rout in the hall, Thearwith came in Sir Bay of Seveshall. ¶ Syleus my suffrainz quoth the courteyz Knight, And in that stoound the chearm became still, The Dwarves dinner full dearly was dight, For wine and was●ell he had at his will, And when he had eaten and fed his fill. One hundred pieces of coined gold, Wear given the Dwarf for his message bolld. ¶ Say too Sir Ryens thou Dwarf quoth the king, That for his proud message I him defy, And shortly with basinz and panz will him ring, Oout of Northgalez whearaz he and I With swords and no razerz shall utterly try, Which of us both is the better Barber: And therewith he shook his sword Excalaber. At this, the minstrel made a pauz & a courtesy, for Primus passus. More of the song is there, but I got it not, Az for the matter had it come to the show, I think the fellow would have handled it well ynoough. Her highness tarried at Kyllingwoorth till the wednesday after, being the 27 of this july, and the nineteenth (inclusive) of her Maiestiez coming thither. For which seven daiz, perceiving my notez so slenderly answering: I took it less blame, too cease & thereof too write you nothing at all, them in such matterz to write nothing likely, And so much the rather (as I have well bethought me) that if I did but ruminate the dayz I have spoken of, I shall bring out yet somewhat more, meet for your appetite, (thoogh a dainty tooth have ye) which I believe your tender stomach will brook well inoogh. whereof part is: first hoow according to her highness name ELIZABETH, The seavenz. which I here say out of the Hebru signifieth (amoong other) the seventh of my God: divers things here, did so justly in number square with the same. Then the three Charites: Aglaia, Charites. with her lightsum gladness. Thalia her flourishing freshness. Euphrosyne, her cheerfulness of spirit, and with theez three in one assent Concordia: with her amity and good agreement. That too hoow great effects their poourz wear pooured out here among us, let it be judged by this: that by a multitude thus met of a three or foour thoouzand every day: and divers dayz more, of so sundry degrees, professions, agez, appetytz, dispozitions & affections: such a drift of time was there passed, with such amity, love, pastime, agreement, and obediens where it should: and without quarrel, jarring, grudging, or (that I cooled here) of ill word between any. A thing master Martin very rare & strange, and yet no more strange than true. The Parcae (as erst I should have said) parcae. the first night of her Maiestiez coming: they hearing & seeing so precioous ado here at a place unlooked for, in an uplondish cuntrée so far within the Ream: pressing into every steed where her highness went, whereby so duddld with such variety of delights, did fet aside their huswifrye, cooled not for their hearts tend their work a whit. But after they had seen her Majesty a bed, got them a prying into every place old hags, as fond of nuellries, as young girls that had never seen Court afore: but neither full, with gazing nor weary with gadding, left of yet for that time, and at high midnight, gat● them giggling, (but not alooud) into the prezens Chamber: minding indeed with their prezent diligens, too recompense their former staknes. So, setting themselves thus down too their work: alas sayz Atropos I have lost my shéerz: Lachesis laughed apace and would not draw a thread: And think ye damez that i'll hoold the distaff while both y● sit idle? why no by my mootherz soll qd. The too sisters after that, (I hard say) began their work again: that long may they continu, but Atropos heard no tidings of her shéers, and not a man that moaned her loss. She is not beloved surely, for this can I tell you: that whither it be for hate too the hag, or love to her highness, or else for both: every man prayz God she may never find them for that work, and so pray I daily apted in all points to the best. Unto this, his honorz exquisite appointment The Garden. of a beautiful Garden, an acre or more of quantity that lieth on the north there. Whearin hard all along the Castl wall is reared a pleazaunt Teries of a ten foot hy & a twelve broad: even under foot & fresh of fine grass: as is also the side thereof toward the garden, in which by sundry equal distauncez: with obelisks, sphearz, and white bearz all of stone upon their curioouz basez, by goodly show wear set: too theez, too fine arbers redolent by sweet trees and flowers, at each end one, the garden plot under that, with fair alleyz green by grass, even voided from the borderz a both sydez, and sum (for change) with sand, not light or to soft, or soilly by dust, but smooth and firm, pleasant too walk on, as a sea shore when the water is availd: then, much gracified by du proportion of four even quarterz: in the midst of each, upon a base a too foot square, & hy, seemly bordered of itself, a square pilaster rising pyramidally of a fyftéen foot high: Simmetrically pe●rced through from a foot beneath, until a too foot of the top: where upon, for a capitle, an Orb of a ten inches thick: every of these (with his base) from the ground too the top of one hole pées, hewn out of hard Porphiry, and with great art & heed (thinks me) thither conveys & there erected. Where further also by great cast & cost the sweetness of savour on all sidez, made so respiraunt from the redolent plants and fragrant earbs and flowers, in form, cooler and quantity so delicioously variant: and fruit Trees bedecked with their Applz, Pears and r●pe Cherryez. And unto these in the midst, against the The Cage Terres: a square cage, sumptuoous and beautiful, joined hard to the Northwall (that a that side guards the garden, as the garden the Castl) of a rare form and excellency was reyzed: in height a twenty foot, thirty long, and a foourtéen broad. From the ground strong & close, reared breast hy, where at a soil of a fair moolding was coouched all abaout: From that upward, foour great wyndoz a froont and too at each éend, every one a five foot wide, as many more even above them, divided on all parts by a transum and Architrave so likewize ranging about the Cage. Each windo arched in the top, and touched a● along upon the hole square. Which with a 〈…〉, sanely ●nit, of mashez six square, an inch wide (az it wear for a flat roof) and likewise the space of every windo with great cunning and cumlines, ●uen and tied was all overstrained V●der the Cornish again, every part beautified with great Diamonds, Emerauds, Rubies and sapphires: pointed, tabled, rok and roound garnished with their golld, by skilful head and hand, and by toil and pencil, so lively expressed, as it mought be great marvel and pleasure to consider how near excellency of art could approach unto perfection of nature. Bear with me good euntréeman thoogh things be not sheawd here as well as I would, or as well as they should. For in deed I can better imagine & conceive that I see, than well utter or duly declare it. Holez wear there also and caverns in orderly distauns & fashion, voided into the wall as well for heat, for coolness, for roost a nightz & refuge in weather, as also for breeding when time is. More, fair even and fresh holly treez for perching and proining set within, tooward each end one. Hereto their diversity of meats, their fine several vessels for their water, and sundry grainz. And a man skilful and diligent to look too them and tend them. But (shall I tell you) the silver soounded Lute, withoout the sweet toouch of hand: the glorioous goollden cup, withoout the fresh fragrant wine, or the rich ring with gem, without the fair feawtered finger: is nothing indeed in his proper grace & use: Even so his Honour accounted of this mansion, till he had placed there tenants according. Had it therefore replenishte with lively Burds, English, French, spanish, Canarian, and (I am deceived if I saw not sum) African. whereby, whither it became more delightsum in change of tunez and armony too the ear: or else in differens of coolerz, kyndez & propertyez to the eye, I'll tell you if I can when I have better be thought me. One day (Master Martin) as the Gardin The Gardener. door was open, & her highness a hunting by licens of my good friend Adrian, I came in at a bek, but would scant out with a thrust: for sure I was loath so soon to departed. Well may this (Master Martin) be suinwhat too magnitude of mind, but more thereof as ye shall know, more cauz ye shall have so too think: here out what I tell you, and tell me when we meet. In the centre (az it wear) of this goodly The Fountain. Garden, was theer placed a very fair Foountain, cast into an eight square, reared a four foot high, from the midst whereof a Colum up set in shape of too Athlants joined together a backhalf, the t●●n looking East, tother West, with their hands uphollding a fair form bowl of a three foot over: from wheans sundry fine pipez, did lively distil continual streamz into the receipt of the Foountayn: maintained still too foot deep by the same fresh falling water: wherein pleazauntly playing too & fro & round about Carp, Tench, Bream, and for variety, Perch & Eel, fish fayrliking all and large, in the top the ragged staff: which, with the bowl, the pillar, and eight sides beneath, wear all hewn out of rich & hard white Marbls. A one side, Neptune with his Tridental Fuskin triumphing in hiz Throne, trailed into the deep by his marine horsez. On an other, Thetis in her chariot drawn by her Dollphins. Then Triton by hiz fyshez. Here Protheus hearding his sea bulls. There Doris & her dooughterz solacing a sea & sandz. The wavez soourging with froth & foam, entermengled in place, with whalez, whirlpoolz, sturgeonz, Tunneyz, Couches & wealks: all engraven by exquisite devise and skill, so as I may think this not much inferioour unto Phoebus gatez, which (Ovid sayz) & peraduentur a pattern to thiz, that Vulcan him Metam. 2 self did cut: whereof such was the excellency of art, that the work in valu surmoounted the stuff, and yet were the gatez all of clean massy silver. Here wear things ye see moought inflame mind too long after looking: but who so was found so hot in desire, with the wrest of a cock was sure of a coolar: water spurting upward with such vehemency, as they should by & by be moistened from top too to. The he's to sum laughing, but the she's to more sport. Thiz sometime was occupied to very good pastime. Argument most certain of a right noble mind, that in this sort cooled have thus all contrived. But Master Martin, yet one wyndlesse must I featch, too make ye one more fair coors and I can: and cauz I speak of one: let me tell you a little of the dignity of onehod, The number ● wherein always, all hy deity all sovereignty, Préeminens, principality and Concord without possibility of disagreement is contained. Az one God, one Dauioour, one Faith, one Prins, one Sun, one Phoenix, and as one of great wizdom sayz: one heart one weigh. Where onehod reinz: there quiet bears rule, & discord fliez a pace. Three again may signify company, a meeting, a multitude, plurality: so as all talez and numberings from too unto three, and so upward, may well be counted numberz, till they moount unto infinity, or else too confusion, which thing the sum of Too can never admit: nor itself can well be coounted a number, but rather a friendly conjunction of too ones, that keeping in a sincerity of accord, may purport unto us, charity each too other, mutual love, agreement & integrity of friendship without dissimulation. Az is in these. The too Testaments. The too Tables of the Law. The too great lights: Duo luminaria 〈…〉 t 〈…〉 ll 〈…〉 k 〈…〉 z 〈…〉 a●… 〈…〉 ō●… 〈…〉 r 〈…〉 ē●… 〈…〉 a●●●… 〈…〉: Az fy●st for pastymez ho●m●●s and hawks: dear, red & fal●o, hare & for, partridge & fezaunt, fish & fooul, carp & tench. For warz, spear & shield, horse & harness, sword & buckler: for sustenauns, wheat & barley, peaz and beanz, meat and drink, bread & meat, beer & ale, appis and pearz. But least by such dualitéez I draw you too far: let us here stay, and come nearer home. See what a sort of friendly binitéez we ourselves do consist & stand upon. first oour to feet, too legs, too knéez, so upward: and above, too shoolderz, too armz & too hands. But chiefly our principll Too, that is, body and soll: then in the head where all oour sensez meet, and almost all in Tooz: too nozethrills, too ears and too eyz So are we of friendly Tooz, from top too to. Well, to this number of binitéez, take ye one more for an upshot, & here an end. Too Dyallz nigh unto the battilments The too Diallz. are set aloft upon too of the sidez of Cezarz toour one East, tother Soouth for so stand they best to sheaw the oourz too the tooun & cuntrée: both fair large and rich, by vyse for ground & goold for letterz whereby they glitter conspicuous a great weigh of. The clokbell that is good & shrill, was commanded too silens at first, and in deed sang not a note all the while her highness was there, the clock stood also still withal. But mark now, whither wear it by chauns, by constellation of stars, or by fatal appointment (if fatez and stars do deal with dialz.) Thus was it in deed: The handz of both the tablz stood firm and The Diallz at two. a clock. fast, always pointing too just too a clock, still at too a clock. Which thing beholding by hap at first: but after seriously marking in deed, enprinted into me a deep sign & argument certain. That this thing amoong the rest, was for full signifiauns of his Lordships, honorable, frank, friendly, and noble heart toward all estates. Which, whither come they to stay & take cheer, or strait to return: too see, or to be seen: cum they for duty too her Majesty or love too his Lordship, or for both: Come they early or late: for his Lordship's part, they come allweyz all at too a clock een jump at too a clock: That is to say in good heart, good acceptauns, in amity and friendly wellcoom. Who saw else that I saw, in right must say as I say. For so many things beside, Master Humphrey wear herein so consonant unto my construction, that this pointing of the clock (to myself) I took in amity as an oracle certain. And here is my windless, like your course as pleaz ye. But now sir too cum to end. For receiving of her highness, and entertainment of all thoother estatez. sins of delicatez that weigh mought serve or delight: as of wine, spice, dainty viaunds, plate Muzik, ornaments of house, rich arras & sith (too say nothing of that meaner things) the mass by provision was heaped so hoouge, which the boounty in spending did after bewray. The conceit so deep in casting the plat at first. Such a wizdom and cunning in acquiring things so rich, so rare, and in such abundauns: by so imm●●ens & profuse a charge of expense, which by so honorable servis & exquisite order, curteizy of officers and humanity of all, wear after so boountifully bestoed and spent, what may this express, what may this set out unto us, but only a magnifyk mind, a singular wizdoom, a prinsly ꝓurs, and an heroical heart? If it wear my theme Master Martin, too speak of his Lordship's great honour & magnificens, though it be not in me too say sufficiently, as bad a penclark as I am, yet cooled I say a great deel more. But being here now in magnificens, & matters of greatness: it falz well too mind. The greatness of his honours Tent, that The great Tent. for her Maiestyez dining was pight at long Ichington, the day her highness came to Killing worth Castl. A tabernacls indeed for number and shift of large and goodly roomz, for fair & eazy offices both inward & ooutward all so likesun in order & eyesight: that justly for dignity may be comparabl with a beautiful palace, & for greatness & quantity with a proper tooun, or rather a Citadel. But to be short, lest I keep you too long from the Ryall Exchange now, and too cauz you conceive mooche matter in feawest words. the Iron bedstead of Og the King of Basan (ye wots) was foour yards and a half long, and too Deut. yards wide, whereby ye consider a Giant of a great proportion was he. This Tent had seven cart load of pynz pertaining too it: now for the greatness, guess as ye can. And great as it was (too marshal oour matters of greatness together) not forgetting a Wether at Grafton, brought too the Coort, that for body and wool was exceeding great, the measure I took not, let me sheaw you with what great marvel a great Child of leicester shire, at this long Ichington, by the Parents was prezented: great (I say) of limz & proportion, of a foour foot & foour inches high: and else lanuginoous as a lad of eyghtéen years, being indeed avowd too be but six year old: nothing more bewraying his age than his wit: that was, as for thooz years simple & childish. Az for unto hiz Lordship, having with such greatness of honorable modesty & benignity so passed forth, as Lauden sine invidia et an●icos par arit. By greatness of Terent. well doing, won with all sorts to be in such reverens, as: De quo mentiri fama venetur. In sincerity of friendship so great, Bias. as no man more devooutly woorships. Oout of all hazard dost thou set that to thy friends thou givest: A surer trezure canst thou not have ever while thou livest. What may these greatnesses bode, but only as great honour, fame, & renooum for these parts here away, as ever was unto thoz too noble Greatz: the Macedonian Alexander in Emathia or grées, or to Roman Charles in germany, or Italy? which, wear it in me weigh to set out, no man of all men by God (Master Martin) had ever more cauz, and that hereby consider you. It pleazed his honour to bear me good will at first, & so too continue. To have given me apparel even from his back, to get me allowauns in the stabl, too advance me unto this worshipful office so near the most honorable Council, to help me in my licens of Beanz (though indeed I do not so much uze it, for I thank God I need not) to permit my good Father to serve the stabl. by your leave while God le●ds me 〈◊〉 to utter my mind▪ 〈◊〉 having as good cauz of his honour, as Virgil had of Augustus Cezar) will, I poet it a little with Virgil, and say. A singular patr●n of humanity may he be well unto us toward all degréez: of Honour, toward hy Estates, and chéeflye whereby we may learn in what dignity, worship and reverens her highness is to be esteemed, honoured and received, that was never indeed more condignly done than here so as neither by the builders at first, nor by the Edict of pacification after, was ever 1266. An. 50. Hen. 3. Kenelworth more nobled then by thiz, hiz Lordships receiving her highness here now. But jesus jesus whither am I drawn now. But tallk I of my Lord onz, e'en thus it farez with me: I forget all, my friends, & myself too. And yet you, being a Mercer, a Merchant, as I am: my countryman born, & my good friend withal, where by I know ye are compassiond with me: Me thought it my part somewhat to impart unto you, hoow it is here with me, & hoow I lead my life, which in deed is this. A mornings I rise ordinartly at seven a clock: Then ready, I go into the Chapel: soon after eight, I get me commonly into my Lord's Chamber, or into my Lord● prezidents. There at the cupboard after I have eaten the manchet, served over night for livery (for I dare be as bolld, I promise you, as any of my friends the servants there: and indeed cooled I have fresh if I would tarry, but I am of wont jolly & dry a mornings) I drink me up a good bol of Ale: when in a sweet pot it is defecated by all nights standing, the drink iz the better, take that of me: & a morsel in a morning with a sound draft is very wholesome and good for the eyesight. Then I am as fresh all the the forenoon after, as had I eaten a hole pées of beef. Noow sir, if the Council sit. I am at hand, wait at an inch I warrant you If any make babbling, peas (say I) wilt ye where ye are? if I take a lystenar, or a priar in at the chinks or at the lokhole, I am by & by in the bones of him, but now they keep good order, they know me well enough: If a be a friend or such one as I like: I make him sit down by me on a form, or a chest, let the rest walk a God's name. And here doth my langagez now and than stand me in good stead, my French, my Spanish, my , & my Latin: sometime amoong Ambassadors men, if their Master be within with the Council, sometime with the Ambassador himself, if he bid call his lackey, or ask me what's a clock, and I warrant ye I answer him roundly that they marvel to see such a fellow there: them laugh I & say nothing. Dinner & supper I have twenty placez to go to, & heartily prayed to: And sometime get I too Master Pinner by my faith a worshipful Gentleman, and as careful for his charge as her highnez hath: there find I always good store of very good viaunds we eat and be merry thank God & the Queen. Himself in feeding very temperate & moderate as ye shall see : and yet by your leave of a dish, as a colld pigeon or so, that hath cum to him at meat more than he looked for, I have seen him e'en so by and by surfeit, as he hath plucked of his napkin, wyept his knife, & eat not a morsel more: like ynoough to stik in hiz stomach a too dayz after: (Sum hardmessage from the higher officers, perceive ye me?) Upon search, his faithful dealing and diligens hath found him faultless. In afternoons & a nights, sometime am I with the right worshipful Sir George Howard, as good a Gentleman as livez: And sometime at my good Lady Sidney's chamber, a Noblwooman that I am az much boound unto, as poor man may be unto so gracious a Lady: And sometime in sum other place. But alwayez among the Gentlwemen by my good will (O, ye know that cum alweyez of a gentle spirit) & when I see company according than can I be as lively to, sometime I foot it with dancing: now with my Gittern, and else with my Cittern, then at the Virgynalz: Ye know nothing comes amiss to me: then carol I up a song withal: that by and by they come flocking about me like bees to honey: and ever they cry, another good Langham another. Shall I tell you? when I see Misterz— (A, see a mad knave, I had almost tollde all) that she gyvez onz but an eye or an ear: why then, man, am I b●est, my grace, my courage, my cunning is doobled: She sayz sometime she likez it, & then I like it much the better, it doth me good to here hoow well I can do. And too say truth: what, with mine eyz. as I can amoroously gloit it, with my spanish sospires, my french heights, mine Italian dulcets, my dutch hovez my doobl up sin hove release, my hy reachez, my fine feigning, my deep diapason, my wanton warblz, my running, my timing, my tuning and my twinkling, I can gracify the matters as well as the proudest of them, and was yet never stained I thank God. By my troth cuntreman it is sumtim hy midnight ear I can get from them. And thus have I told ye most of my trade, all the léeve long day: what will ye more, God save the Queen, and my Lord, I am well I thank you. Hée● with meant I fully to bid ye farewell, had not this doubt cum to my mind, that here remainz a doout in you, which I ought (me thought) in any wise to clear. Which, is, ye marvel perchauns to see me so bookish. Let me tell you in, few words: I went to scool forsooth both at Pollez, & also at saint Antoniez: in the fifth form, past Aesop fabls iwis, red Terens. Vos istaec intro auferte, & began with my Virgil Tityrus tu patulae. I cooled my rulez cooled construe & pars with the best of them sins, that (as partly ye know) have I trade's the feat of merchandise in sundry Cuntreyz, & so got me Langagez: which do so little hinder my Latin, as (I thank God) have much increased it. I have leisure sometime, when I tend not upon the counsel: whereby, now look I on one book, now on an other.
