¶ Here beginneth the treaties of Nycodemus gospel. man on ladder handing the body of Jesus down from the cross into the arms of another man; women standing by The prolong. man standing under an arch IT befell in the xix year of the Synorye of Tybarye cesarye Emperor of Rome And in the synorye of herodis that was the son of herodies which was king of Galyce/ the viii kalends of Aprell/ the which is the xxv day of march the four year of the son of velom/ which was councelere of Rome. & Olympus had been afore ii C. year and ii This time joseph & Annas were lord above all justices meyers and jews Nycodemus that was a worthy prince he died write this blessed story in Hebrew And Thodosinus the Emperor died it translate out of Hebrew in to latin And bishop Turpy died it translate fro latin in to french And thus beginneth this blessed story. ¶ Thus endeth the prolong And beginneth the gospel of Nycodemus. Annas'/ and Cayphas/ simeon/ Datan/ Gamalyell/ judas/ Levy/ Neptalym/ Alyzaundyr/ zaryus. And many other jews/ came to pilate and accused our lord Ihesu in many things And thus they said. We know him well that he is the son of joseph the wright the which was borne of mary. And thus he said/ that he is gods son & king And not only that. but the sabot which is yeven to us for ease and rest/ he breaketh And so he will our law pilate answered thus and said. What is that. that he hath do. And how may he break our law The jews answered thus and said We have by our law that no man should do no work upon the sabot And this Jesus' with his false crafts healeth many maladies. As blind/ lame/ crooked/ & mezyll. And thus he breaketh our Sabotte/ with his false crafts Pylat said how may he do such things by evil working. ¶ The jews answered for he is an evil worker and by the prince of devils that is Belsabubbe he putteth out devils And thus by devils are all this work is put to him Pylat answereth thus that ye say that Belsabubbe is prince of devils Is not he a devil/ this was never hard afore this time that a man might do such works by the devil but by the virtue of god. I suppose that he doth such works And so for the helche of mankind he healeth all seek And so I see for his well doing ye accuse him. Than the jews answered and said Sir we pray you to do him to come afore you And than shall we here what he will say. Than clepeth Pylat a sergaunt & said unto him Go he said & bring Ihesu hither Than went the sergaunte to Ihesu & kneeled before him And a cloth that he had in his hand he cast upon the groun & said to our lord Ihesu Sir go upon this cloth for the justice will speak with you. When the jews saw the sergaunte do such worship to our lord they ccyed to pilate & said Why cometh not this sergeant forth lightly with Ihesu we see well that he doth worship to him as though he were a king And kiss his cloth afore him Than clepeth pilate the servant to hy● And said why diddest thou such worship to him. The servant answered and said for I saw Ihesu come in to Iherusalem upon an ass and there I saw folks spread clothes upon the ground before him and did him reverence and he went there upon And than I saw another company of chyldryn with branches and flowers in their hands singing (O sanna in excelsies) That is for to say blessed be thou that comyst in the name of god Than said the jews to the servant/ the children of ebrewe the sing ebrewe. and thou that art borne of Grece how undyrstandyst thou ebrewe The servant answered here to and said I asked an Hebrew And he told it me/ Than said pilate to the jews. What is O sanna for to say. The jews answered it is to say make me safe or else lord save me. Than said pilate to the jews Lo your own self bear witness of the words of your owyn children What hath than the servant mydone that ye blame him thus without a cause Than said pilate to the servant bring ●hesu afore I me And look thou bring him as it pleaseth the. ¶ Than the servant brought our lord Ihesu in to the parlore and did Reverence to him and worship as he had done afore And said to our lord Ihesu My lord Pylat the high justice will speak with you And as our lord Ihesu entered in to the parelour were servants that held masies in their hands And at the coming in of our lord the masts bo wed down to our lord Ihesu upon which masies were images of gold after the Empowre. And when the jews saw that the masies with images bowed down and did reverence to our lord god than they cried upon them that held the masies And when that pilate saw that. also he said to the jews. Ne marvel not you that the images upon the masies that they hold in their hands bow down it is seeming to me that with out reason ye cry upon him Than said the jews to Pylat we see verily that they bowed down to him & died revererence to him. than cleped Pylat these seriauntꝭ to him & said to them. Why let ye your malices bow down to Ihesu. And the seriaunties answered & said Sir we be painims & seriaunties of the temple. But when Ihesu came in they bowed against him unwitting & willing of us they died reverence to him Than said Pylat to the mastyrs of the law These ye of the most mighty men among you. & let them hold these mazes And than shall we see whither they shall bow or not. when this was done. Pylat commanded them for to hold the mazes sickerly. and than he said & swore by holy Cezare if that the images on the mazes bowed down when that Ihesu cometh in. that they should sore for think it. Than said Pylat to the seriaunt whose name was Akarya. let out Ihesu and bring in him again as it liketh the to bring him Than went our lord Ihesu out of the parlour And pylat called them that held the masies. And swore by the might & the height of holy Cezare that if the images bowed down when that Ihesu came in. he should smit of their heads Than commanded Pylat that Ihesu should be brought in And the sergeant brought him in like as he had do before When that our lord Ihesu entered in to the parlour. the images bowed down And died reverence to our lord like as they died the other time before. And when Pylat saw that he was hugely abashed. & so he arose up of his seat. And as he was rysy up came a messenger fro his wife whose name was Procula/ & this messenger delivered to Pylat a letter. & thus it said. ¶ How Pylatys wife sent a messenger to deliver Ihesu Woman and armed man with empty labels above their heads Pylat be not against this rightful. man. for I have this night be hugely dremyde for him And be that I wot well that he is a rightful man. And when that Pylat had read this letter. he said to all the jewz. ¶ Sirs ye know well that my wife is a paynim. And ye wose well that she hath edified many of your synagogues. she sendeth unto you that she knoweth this man for a rightful man. For mickle tribulation and disease she hath suffered this night for nym Than said the Jews to Pylat. have we not said unto the that he is Turrian evil man And worketh by devils craft For by devils hath he thus tysed thy wife Than cleped Pylat our lord to him and said thus. Seest thou not that all the jews bear; witness against thee: And thou givest no manner of answer. than said our lord Ihesu unto Pylat. every man hath power to speak with his mouth be it good oryll and so shall ye well see. than the jews said unto our lord Ihesu. what shall we see. We all know well that thou were begotten in fornycacy on. And for thy birth died herowde slay all the children in bedleem and in the country about that were within ii year & a half of age. And josepe & mary went in to Egypt for dread of herowde And when herowde was deed they came again into the city of Nazareth. And when Pylat heard this. he said unto the jews. Than is that Ihesu that herowde deed seek for to slay. And the jews answered and said that it was he. Than doubted Pylat moche more than he did tofore And so there were xii jews that drew them by themself And thus they said to Pylat. Sir we know well that this man is not borne in fornication for we know well that josepe wedded mary his mother And so he is not borne in fornication. it seemeth that your words be not true/ for For josepe wedded mary as they say that be of your own folk Than said Annas and Cayphas and other jews that had said that Ihesu our lord was borne in fornication and that he was an evil worker. And that his dyscyplis were fled and proselyty. Than clepyde Pylat Annas and Cayphas and asked them what was proselyty And they said that proselyty was paynemies children. and so be his disciples And for that they say that he is not borne in fornication than answered these xii men whose names be these Lazarus. Asstorius. Antonius. jacob. Serius. Gamaliel. Isaak. Fynees. Azarius. Agrippa. Amenus. & judas. We say that ween are proselyty but we be jews children and we say truth. that we were there that josepe wedded mary Than cleped Pylat these xii men that said thus. And he conjured them by the height of holy Cezare. If that he were borne in fornication that ye bear witness and suerce And oath before all this people And these xii men answered to Pylat and said we have by our law that we ne ought to swear for that is syn but we will swear by holy Cezare if it be not as we say we will be culpable of death We see well that these. xii men that Ihesu is not borne in fornication to be believed by her word And we say all that he is borne in fornication and that he is an evil worker And thus he saith that he is God's some and thereto a king And yet thou wilt not believe us that have the law to keep. Than commanded Pylat that all should go out of the pareloure save these xii men that said that our lord was not borne in fornication. And also he commanded that our lord Ihesu should be led out unto that one side of the pareloure. Than said pylat to these xii men. For what cause is that they will bring Ihesu to death And they answered and said. that the masters of the law had him in hate for that he healed maladies and sickness upon the Sabot Than said Pylat. A I see well for his good works they will slay him Than whence Pylat out of the pareloure full of heaviness and said unto all the jews I have witness that I can find in this man no point of death. The jews answered if hene had be an evil doer. ween had a delivered him to the Than said Pylat to the Jews/ what said god that there should no man be slain but of me. than entered Pylat in to the pareloure again. & cleped our lord Ihesu to him and said. Thou art king of jews. Our lord Ihesu answered again/ thou sayest that of thyself or else other have said that to the of me. Than said Pylat to our lord Ihesu. Thou wottest well that I am no jew but of thine own nation as bishops and princes have delivered the to me. but I never what evil thou hast do them. if thou be king Iewes answer to me. Our lord answered to him My kingdom is not in this world for if my kingdom were in this world. my ministers would not be against me that I should not have be delivered to the but my kingdom is not now here. Than answered Pylat. than I see well thou art a king. than answered our lord Ihesu thou sayest that I am a king and to that I was borne and for to declare to the world that who so be of crowth. will here my word. Than said Pylat what is troth. be thy word there is but little troth in earth Our lord said to Pylat. understand troth how that it is jugged in earth of them that dwell there in. And thus said Pylat to the jews. I have witness both in heaven and in earth son and moan. that I can find no cause of death in this man. ¶ Than answered the jews. is not this a great cause that he saith of our Temple. That he might stroy it & raise it again in iii days than said Pylat what temple is that/ that ye speak of And the jews answered that it was the Solomon temple which was in edyfyenge xlvii year And this Jesus' said that he should destroy it and raise it again in iii days I am without guilt of spilling of this man's blood. And that shall ye well see. what will ye do with him the jews that were full of envy cried all with one voice. the shedding of his blood be upon us and upon our children. ¶ How pilate took of the most Ancient men of the law as bishops & other masters to counsel. pilate took of the most Ancient men as bishops and masters of the law Sirs do not against this simple man for I do you to wit that he is not worthy to be deed Is not he more worthy that hath healed maladies. than he had broke the Sabbath Than said the jews A good judge taketh intent if any man hath do a forfeit against Cezare were he not worthy to be deed And pilate said yes. Than said the jews moche more is he worthy that forfettyth against god for he said himself that he is God's son For when we counioured him that he should tell us if he were the son of god. And he denied it not And yet he said we should see the son of man sitting upon the right hand of the godhead & coming out of the skies of heaven And when that Pylat heard this he led our lord Ihesu on that other part of the pareloure & said to our lord. Man I ne what what I may do with the. ¶ Than said our lord Ihesu to pilate Moses and the prophets here before they preached of my passion and of my resurrection When that pilate heard this he pronowced all the words of our lord to the jews And anon the jews said to Pylat what wouldest thou here more of his falls slander Than said pilate take him in to your synagogue. And dame there on him your law. the jews answered/ our law commandeth that if any man sin or trespass against any man he shall withdraw him xlii days out of the Temple. And he that sinned or tresspassed against god by slanders Our law biddeth that he shall be stonyd to death And for asmuch as Ihesus sayeth that he shall sit in heaven upon the right side of the divine majesty And that he shall come fro heaven in to the skies. For this slander we will that he be crucified Than said Pylat that is not good that ye cast you for to do And than Pylat by held about him & saw many men & women that sore wepce And held their countenance upon him. than said pylat to the bishops & masters of the law I see well the mickle of the people they will not that this man die. Than said the masters of the law. Good judge we see well that he must be deed And for dread of death worse he may not leave Than said pilate/ what is the cause that he should be deed for. than said the jews. for that he sayeth that he is goddies son and thereto a king. ¶ How Nychodemus spoke to pilate for Ihesu. Pilate and another man (with an empty label above his head: Nicodemus?) conversing Pylatte. Nychodemus the worthy Prince/ was that time afore Pylat & thus he said I have oft times. spoke to the masters of the law and to all the jews. & thus I have said unto them that ungodely & untruly they do a miss against Ihesu. For many glorious signs & tokens hath he wrought among us/ that never none of our forfaders wrought afore us & therefore I counsel you let him go & do him no more harm For if the tokens & the miracles be of god that he hath wrought it shall endlessly endure after his days & if it be not of god but by enchantment or by some charm it shall not endure. ¶ For moyses that was of god he showed many tokens in Egypt which that god bade him do afore king Pharaoh than were there two men james. and zambres which that were Gogolers and wyches that deceived the people they made the same tokens that Moses made. And the Egyptians held the tokens of god And for they were not of god they perished And all that ever held withal And therefore I say let this man go And do him no more harm for I say forsooth he is not worthy to be deed And peraventure this Jesus' may be a prophet sent to us as Moses said to our forfaders that our lord god should cheese and send a prophet of our own nation And that we should here & believe him as god his ownself And peraventure this may be the same man that god said thus of And this Jesus' be the same man sent of god he is come to the salvation of them that believe truly And to the damnation of them that believe not right as our lord god said unto Moses that if any man refuse the prophet And will not here what he shall say in my name he shall be put out of my people All this have I said unto the Princes and bishops of the law when that the jews heard this that Nycodemus said afore Pylat they said thus we see well that thou art a disciple of Ihesu and therefore thou spekyst for him Than said Nycodemus to the jews a than is not this lord Pylat here a disciple of Ihesu that hath spoke thus for him is not he the high justice under Cezare the Emperor when the jews heard this than they said to Nycodemus. ye take thou the troth of Ihesu And more thou have thy dwelling place with him Than lifted up Nycodemus his hands to heaven and said God grant that I may have part of the truth of Ihesu. And a dwelling place more I have with him god grant it as ye have said so more it be. ¶ How certain jews showed to pilate the miracles that Cyrste had done. ANd anon there start forth a jew afore pilate. And thus he said. My lord pilate. I lay bedredde in my bed xxxviii year And all the days for the most part in peril of death. And so it befell that my lord Ihesu came by me & had pity on me. And than he had me take my bed and go home into my how. And anon with his words/ I was made hole And anon after came another jew afore pilate and thus he said My lord pilate I was poor blind And as my lord Ihesu passed afore me I cried unto him And said Ihesu the son of david have mercy on me. And he had mercy on me And he put his hand to mine eyen and than I saw. ¶ And than another jew that stood afore pilate said Sir I was a mesel and my lord Ihesu made me hole with his word. ¶ After that came an aged woman afore pilate and thus she said. My lord pilate I was desezed with the red flix iii year and more And I deed not but touched the hem of the vesture of my lord Ihesu And anon I was made hole of my malady and therefore my lord pilate have mercy on him and do him not to death And when that pilate heard this/ he feared/ And anon a great company of jews which that our lord Ihesu had healed they cried all with on voice. A great saviour of the people is our lord Ihesu. When pilate heard this he said unto Cayphas and Amyas. And other masters of the law I marvel why that your form faders and princes and bishops of the law healed not men of their infirmities as this man doth And they answered no word thereto And these men that our lord had healed cried with one voice Our blessed Lord Ihesu hath wrought many divine miracles as he that raised Lazare/ fro death to life. Which that had lain deed four days in the earth And our lord Ihesu by the virtue of his word he raised him out of the momment and brought him alive among us his sisters And died him sit with him at his table/ And when that pilate heard this he was all abashed for fere and cried with an high voice to the jews and said. Men what is this that ye will do I see that without guilt ye will shed the blood of him that hath nothing miss wrought Than rose pylat up and took Nycodemus to him and these xii. men which that said that our lord was not borne in fornication and thus he said to them. Syrys I have great affection in you say to me what I shall do with him And they said sir we can say for we will never assent to the will of the masters of the law nor to their works & therefore let them see well to there soul is that they may be saved at the day of judgement than turned Pylat to the masters of the law and to other jews and said thus to them Sirs ye know well that it is the custom among us to deliver a prisoner to the people for the love of our sabbath the high day of sacrifice And sirs ye know well that I have a prisoner in my preson a noble prisoner a man-slayer which is worthy to be deed. whose name is Barabas will ye that I deliver you him or else Ihesu which is without guilt and not worthy to die The princes and the bishops and the old men they said all with one voice we will that thou deliver to us Barabas Than said pylat what will ye than say that I do with Ihesu which is cleped christ Than said the jews with an high voice let him be crucyfed and so. me said if thou let him go thus thou ne art Caesar's friend sin that he said this foul slander that he is goddies son And thereto a king for who so ever sayeth that he is a king he speaketh against Cezare And when that Pylat heard this he was wonder heavy and thus he said to the jews all days fro the beginning have ye be contrarious to them that hath do well to you. And to him ye have do mickle harm and mickle turmentrye Than said the jews/ what is he that hath do so mickle good to us Than said pylat our god which hath holp you and delivered you out of the hands of Egypte which drowned your enemies in the deepness of the red see And led you thorough the water of the see also dry as upon the earth And also in desert he rained to you manna And made water out of the hard stone in desert which that ye drank of & all your beasts And also to you he gave the ten commandments of the law. And in all these commaundementies that he hath charged you with. ye have been contrarious to your god As when ye made a Calf to be your god which would have dysheryt you & destroyed you ne had moyses be your master that prayed to your god for you for the peril that ye were in. & now ye say to me that I hate my king And am not his friend if I deliver not this man Ihesu that hath cured mekylle of your people of many infirmities which is your king/ that never did evil but ever moche goodness & prophet when the jews heard this they were full of wroth & of maletalente. And thus they cried all together and said Our king is Cezare Emperor of Rome but we know well that Jesus' is no king though the kings sought him in Bethlehem & said that they sought the king of jews & offrede him gifts but yet is he therefore no king we know well that when herowde herd say that they sought the king of jews. herowde would have slain him therefore And so he deed slay thosandies of children therefore in Bethlehem and in all the country about as we have said here to you afore. when that Pylat heard this he commanded them to be still & to hold them in pease and thus he said to them. A is it not he than that herowde sought for to slay And the jews answered and said that it was he And anon Pylat did command water to be brought him. afore them all he washed his hands saying thus I ne am guilty of spilling of this ryghtfulle man's blood & that may ye well se. but the blood of him be upon you and on your children Than commanded Pylat that a great company of knights should be brought afore him to his pareloure And than Pylatte kest the force upon our lord Ihesu & thus he said to him. ¶ How Pylat commanded the jews that no villains should put christ to his passion but knights. Jesus bound to a pillar, being scourged (?) THine own people hath disproved all that ever I have spoke for thee. & therefore I command at the beginning that no man lay hands on him but if he be a knight or elliss of gentle blood. for it is not sitting that a king should be slain of villains And therefore I command thou at the first beginning that he be scourged to the plesing of the first princes & than lift him upon the cross. & with him ii thefꝭ which that hath be evil doers the one by name Dysmas. & the other Gesmas. & let than be slain with villains. & no gentylles to touch them. & than was our lord Ihesu/ lead out of the parelour & the ii thieves with him. & than they led them in to another parelour wherein was a pylar of white marble. & there they spoiled our lord out of his clothes & bound him naked unto the peler & there they bet him & scourged him with yards & whyppies so hugely that there was no skin upon him & that was a sinful sight for to see the blessed body standing all naked afore all the people scorning & saying thus to our lord god in his scourging Do gladly our king for this is our first beginning. & than the masters of the law said to the knights Do on our king a soft garment. & let us crown him for our king And than the knights did upon him a cloth of silk which for abundance of blood was so clung to him that at the pulling of it was. C. fold more pain to him than was his scourging. & when they had pulled of this garment they died on him a reed mantel of silk. & after that they set a garland of thorns on his heed. & they pressed so sore the garland of thorns on his heed that the thorns pierced down in to his brawn & so at the last they lead him to the cross. and there they crucified him between two. thefys Dysmas on the right side and Gesmas on the left side And so they put to his mouth a spoon that was drypped full of drink that they had made with Ayzell and gall And that they put to his mouth for to drink of And thus that blessed lord Ihesu suffered all that ever they would do to him And than our lord Ihesu looked up to the father. and thus he said. My father forgive them this trespass for they newot what they do And than the knights kiss lots upon his vesture for to wit no should have it And than the Princes of the law with bishops and many other/ they cried unto our lord Ihesu and thus they said. Thou hast healed many other and thou ne mayst he'll thyself. if thou be goddies son come down of the cross and we shall believe on the And than said the knights in scorn. if thou be king of jews deliver now thyself And than was commanded that a knight should be brought forth whose name was longeus And him they made put a spear to Jesus' side. This knight longyus was blind and so the princes of the law made him for to pierce our lords side And so there came out both blood and water And so the blood came running down by the spear shaft unto longyus hand and he awnterously wiped his eyen with his hand And anon he might see. ANd than Pylat did write a bill on which was written. Jesus'. Nazarenus. Rex. judeorum That is for to say/ Jesus' of Nazarreth/ king of jews and this was writ in Hebrew grece and latin And this title they put above his heed on the cross. Than Gesmas the thief which hinge on the lift side of our lord said thus to our lord Ihesu if thou be god deliver both the and us. Than Dysmas that hinge on the right side of our lord Ihesu he blamed him for his word And thus he said to him It seemeth by thy word that thou dredyst not god nor believest not in him. And therefore art thou endlessly dampened. For well thou wottest that we have dyscerued that we suffer but he hath right nought for fettyd nor mysdove and without dysceruing he is brought hereto And when Dysmas had said this words he looked upon Ihesu and thus he said to him/ lord Ihesu have mercy upon me when thou comyst in to thy kingdom And than answered Jesus' to him/ and said this day shalt thou be with me in paradise. And that time was about midday & fro that time in to none days was the son hid and lost his brightness and the veil of the temple was smitten asunder fro the height down to the ground on ii parties and some men say that an angel did it with a trace of fire And this angel said thus in men hearing I am wytnysse of the passion of Ihesu christ After that our lord Ihesu cried with Turrian high voice and said father in to thine hands I betake my spirit And than he yielded up his soul to his father And when Centuryo that was prince over the jews and constable and saw these tokens that were befall he glorified god and said forsooth this man was rightful. and that is well seen by the tokens that are befall and so all the people that were there as good folks when they saw these works of the virtue of our lord they smite their breasts with their hands. ¶ How Centuryo told pilate of the wonders at Christ's passion & the same pilate told the jews and of the precious cloth that our lord was buried in. crowd of people (weeping over a body in a coffin?) ANd Centuryo told to pilate all that was befall And when that pilate heard this he was wonder heavy & sorry. And so for sorriness and heaviness he ne eat nor drank day Than cleped pilate the jews & thus he said to them. Meruellye not of the tokens that be befall at the passion of Ihesu. that the son lost his sight & also the day And the jews said to Pylat Sir it was the Clyps' of the son as we have undyrstonding of wise men afore us. than said Pylat how may it be that the veil of the temple is smit a sunder & many graves undone & deed men rise up fro death to life. Hath the clepies of the son do all this. All these tokens men tell me are befall and seen in the city of Iherusalem And if ye believe not me ask Centuryo And they that were with him which kept Ihesu Than were this men brought forth afore the jews which that bare witness and thus they said forsooth we say that in the dying of Ihesu. The earth groaned and shaken as water doth when it is moved And we saw that many bodies rose up fro death to life. & by these tokens we believe that this Jesus' is gods son. Than the Apostles & holy women that had followed our lord Ihesu fro galilee saw that was befall & that men had do to him they drew them by themself. Than joseph of Barmathye keste him for to buy a precious cloth for to wind in our lord Ihesu when he might get grant of Pylat for to have the body. And on this wise came joseph by this precious cloth as ye shall here. There was a knight in Capharnane whose name was Levy This knight wedded a young lady & by procies of time they had together a daughter. Whone they cleped Syndonya & her they put to learning. & so be process of time she waxed a curious worker as of clothes of gold and clothꝭ of silk & of all other women's works. And so at the last when god would this Levy died. & than his wife for the great love that she loved him she fill in a great. malady as in a cold palzye. So farforth that she might neither stir hand ne foot so for this great sickness she fill in a great poverty so forfoth that she ne had to leave on. but by the works of her daughters hand And so it befell that upon the same day that our lord was deed this lady said to her daughter. Daughter Syndonya thou knowest well that our great sabbath day is nigh. Than must we eat our paske lamb and on this day/ is the great market at Barmathye. Therefore good daughter go & array the and take some of thy work that thou haste wrought. and buy us such things there as is needful to me and the at this holy time Her daughter Syndonya answered to her mother. & said mother your will shall be done. And mother I do you to understand that I have wrought the Curyouseste cloth that ever was made for it fill graciously to work that it is more curious than I can skill of And than the lady said to her daughter. let me see the cloth/ And Syndonya showed this cloth to her mother And when this lady saw this cloth she said thus blessed be that lord that hath made the to work such a cloth And daughter upon my blessing that thou sell this cloth to no man but if he tell the what he shall do withal And so this maid Syndonya she washed her & bawmyde and acayed her to market and in the market stood joseph of Barmathye with a great people speaking of our lord death And by a venture this maid Syndonya came before him And joseph of Barmathye espied the cloth hangyuge on her arm. and asayd her if she would fell that cloth. And she answered and said syrye. And than joseph asked her the price And she said xxx besaunties & anon joseph paid to her xxx bezants. & Syndonia fill down to his feet praying him/ that he would tell her what he do with all should And than he answered to her and said Daughter this day is deed an holy prophet that men cleped Jesus' of Nazareth and that holy prophet I purpose me to berry him and wind him in this cloth Daughter now have I told the what I will do withalle and therefore tell me who made this cloth that I have bought of thee/ and this maid said that herself made it And joseph asked her what her name was and she said Syndonya than said joseph now daughter after you I shall name this cloth forth is cloth shall be named Syndonya And than this maid went home to her mother and told her how she had sped And her mother asked her what should be done with the cloth And Syndonya told her that the holy prophet that was that time deed should be veryed therein And who shall very him there in said this lady And Syndonya said that joseph of Barmathye should berey him therein And when this lady heard this she said thus. Would my lord god and that prophet that I had yeven that cloth to his beryenge And anon with the word she was holer and more sown than ever she was afore. And anon the lady & her daughter fill down on their knes thanking our lord god of this glorious myrakyll And so afterward our lord gave them such grace that the mother was wedded to a worthy duke and her daughter Syndonya was Empress of Rome And so they levied ever after in our lords service. And when joseph of Barmathye had bought this precious cloth which was lord and Constable over all Pylaties main he was a full good man and a right full he was not assented to the accusations & words of the jews he abode the kingdom of god and so he came to Pylat and asked him the body of Ihesu And pylat granted him Than this joseph and Nycodemus/ took down the body of Ihesu of the cross and him he wound in this Sondonya/ that he had bought And he buried him in his momment wherein that never man was buried and so the jews would a slain joseph and the xii men that had spoke for our lord Ihesu afore Pylat. And also they would have slain Nycodemus and also though that our lord made hole of many great Infyrmyces And also they that had discovered afore Pylat all his good works that he had do in every place. ¶ How the jews conspired against Nycodemus & joseph & of many other marvels. man with halo, right hand raised in blessing, carrying a cross THan Nycodemus showed himself to the jews. for that he was their prince and their guide. And not long after there was gathered a great assemble of jews into the temple, and afore Nycodemus & thus he said to them, How may this be that ye are thus entered in to this holy Temple. which that your hands be bloody of the death of Ihesu that rightful man which that ye untruly crucified. Than answered to Nycodemus Anna's/ and Cayphas/ simeon/ and Datan/ Gamalyell judas/ Levy/ Neptalym/ and all the oder jews/ how art thou so hardy to come among us that art consenting to Ihesu And therefore such part as he hath mutte thou have with the in this world Than answered Nycodemus and said. Amen. the pease of of Ihesu be with me in this world & in the other endlessly And the jews answered & said. Amen And as Nycodemus had answered thus. Came joseph of Barmathye among them and said thus to the jews why be ye heavy to me with maletalent for I asked the body of Ihesu of Pylat And I do you to wit that I have buried him in my new Momment and wound him in a precious cloth that is called Syndonya. And when the Iewes herd this they had great dread & thus they said among themselves. if men here this words of these knights/ they shall all believe in Ihesu Than they assembled them together & gave to the knights treasure & thus they said to them Go ye & say to the people as ye lay & slept his disciples came privily be night & stole the body of Ihesu. & if Pylat know hereof. we shall excuse you Thus this knights took this treasure & proclaimed as they commanded them. & so their words were soon spread all about. THan came there iii men which that height Fynees. And therefore I counsel you to send some men that may seek the mounties of Israel for peraventure the holy ghost hath ravished Ihesu. and peraventure he may be found let us than do penance for the trespass that we have done This counsel of Nychodemus was pleasing to all the jews & so they sent men for to seek our lord Ihesu but they might not find him in no place. And when these men were repaired again they said to the jews. we have sought Ihesu on every hill of Israel & in every dale & in every place. but we can no where find him but we have found joseph in the city of Barmathye And when the princes heard this they were wonder joyful & merry & they glorified god that joseph was found. And so the jews & masteres of the law assembled them together & keste among them how they might speak to joseph. & so they ordained & made letters & sent to joseph saying thus. Peas be with the & also with them that be with the. we know well that we have sinned in god & in thee. & therefore father joseph. come to us sen that we have knowing that we have grievously sinned & trespassed against the And hugely we marvel of thy deliverance & taking away fro us. we know well that we ymagind & ordained evil counsel against the. but god delivered the fro us. But pease be with the father joseph worshipped & of all people. ¶ How the jews chose viii men that were josephes' friends to desire him to come to them. And when joseph had read this letters than said he thus blessed be my lord god that hath kyverde me under his wings & also blessed mut he be that hath saved me fro all mischiefs than joseph lad all these men in to his place And the next day after he took his horse & road with them to Iherusalem And when the Ihewes with the masters of the law heard say of his coming they go worshipfully against him/ and when they met with him they said thus to him Pease be at thy coming father joseph And joseph answered. The peace of our lord be to all his true people And than the masters of the law with all the people they kissed joseph. And Nycodemus led jososeph in to his place Than the next day after Anna's/ and Cayphas & Nycodemus they lad joseph in to the temple & thus they said to him. father joseph give us knowleching & to god in his temple of that we shall axe of you. father joseph ye know well that ye buried the body of Ihesu. & father ye know well that we shut thou in prison & we could not find thou therein & therefore tell us what befell Than joseph answered & said. when ye did shut me in the close preson upon the Sabot day as I was in my Orisons and prayers that place was spread about me with huge light as me thought fro the four parties of the eyer And so I lifted up my heed and saw my lord Ihesu stand fast by me shining with great clearness And so for dread that I had I fill down ●●lat to the ground. Than my blessed lord Ihesu hent me by the hand and left me up fro the ground & washed my face kissing me and thus he said to me Brother joseph thou art clean by water of the faith for thy sins be released and forgive And therefore my friend have no dread but behold me and know what I am. and so I did behold him and said. my master Elye. And he answered again & said I am not Elye but I am Ihesu christ whom that thou worshipfully buried than said I to him. Lord show me thy momment there that I buried the. And look thou go not out of thy place this xl days for the jews shall do many great dyszesies to many of my friends And now shall I go to my disciples & speak to them of the salvation of the world. And when he had said that word. he vanyssheh fro me And when the princes of the law and other jews heard this that joseph said. they were hugely abashed. And for the great dread that they had they fell down to the ground and so they cried and said. said what tokens are this that are befall in Israel The knights that kept the Sepulchre they bear witness that they saw an Aungyll descend down fro heaven that Ihesu was resin fro death to life & that he shall be seen in galilee And we know well that Ihesu was a man & his father & mother we knew both joseph & Mary. what may we say here against than said a jew whose name was Levyꝰ I know well the beginning of Ihesu for I have moche be with them. for upon a time as I was in the temple in my offrandies & my orisons. that same time saint simeon took him in his arms & thus he said to him. And therefore let us go to them with worship and bring them to the temple. This is the light of our father son of god as I said here afore when I was on live in the land of zabulon and neptalem over the flume iordayn The people that sat in darkness saw great brightness of light and that light was sent to them that sat in the shadow of death that was there as it had be a star shining above upon us And as we were in this joy & gladness of this light that shaken upon us there came to us our father simeon and thus he said to us with great joy Glorify our lord god Ihesu cryst our saviour which I received a child in the temple and took him in my arms saying thus. let now thy servant pass for mine eyen have seen thy health when all the great company of saints that were in hell heard this they were wonder joyful and merry. And after there came another man to us. as it had been an Ermyte. and our forfader asked him what he was And he answered again and said I am a voice of a prophet of an high company for I have go afore the face of his coming and also to make ready the way of his coming and to give health and cunning to his people in the remission of their sins And when I saw him come to me/ I was fulfilled with the holy ghost. and thus I said see the lamb of god and behold him that doth away sin of the world and him I have baptized in the flume jordan & upon him I saw the holy ghost descend in likeness of a dove And than I heard a voice that fill fro heaven saying thus. this is my son in whom great pleasing is to me. And now I am come afore him to you to show to you the son of god is come fro height for to deliver us that sit in darkness & in the shadow of death abiding his mercy. when that Adam our forfader was baptized anon he said to seth his son. And if that he said that he dread death I say to the that he will deceive the and overcome the at all times And than answered Satan to the master of turmentre & said why dredyst thou for to receive mine adversary and thine. I have made the jews for to be against him And I have made ready that he shall be smit with and I have made ready the tree that he shallbe crucified on and iii nails for to fast him thereto And I have made a drink with ezyll & gall that he shall drink And I tell the that he shall be deed anon And I shall bring him bowed to the Than answered the prince of turmentrye this. that thou sayest that he by his might hath take fro me them that were deed what hopyst thou he may be that doth such masteries by his word. I dread me peraventure that this was he that took a way Lazare fro me and raised him that was four days deed whom that I held bound in my preson & him he yielded to life by his word Than answered Satan & said I do the to were that he is the same Ihesu And when the prince of turmentrye heard this he said to Satan I conjure the by thy virtue and mine that thou bring him not here to me for when I heard the commandment of his word I trembled and shaken for dread and all my fell sergeants with me so that we ne might keep lazare. but he flow fro us as swift as it had be an Eagle out of the bondys' that we had him in and the earth that he lay in deed undid and yalde him quyke fro him wenyste thou sathan for to hold such a lord that took his servant fro us manger of us by the virtue of his word wit thou well this without doubt if thou bring him hither that is so mighty to save almankind. he will put us hence I say satan and all though that be shut in our preson and strained be there sin in our bondis by him they shall be delivered and brought to everlasting life. And as they spoke thus together there came a voice as it had been douder of the holy ghost and thus he said. Attollite portas principes uras). ye princes of death unclosyth your gates for the prince of glory shall enter therein And when the prince of hell heard this voice they said to Satan Go hens fro us and if thou be mighty to fight. Go fight with him that is king of glory. And so hell kest Satan fro him and than he said to his sergeants. shut mightily your yates with Iron barrys and fight mightily and withstand him strongly that the king of bliss come not herein that our strength be not take fro us and we to be put to endless sorrow And when the saints heard this. they said with an high voice to the devil and to the prince of tormentri Wretches undo your gates and let the king of glory come in. Than said david/ Prophyced I not when I was living in earth and said thus. (Quia hec est dies quam fecit dns exultemus et letemur in ea). And therefore thou velayne stinking hole undo thy gates that the king of bliss may come in. ANd as david had said this to hell upon them came the glorious desired king of glory in form of man and enlyghted all the darkness of hell with the glorious brightness of his glorious face And all the gates and shetynges with Iron barrys and bolties all to breast in his holy coming and all the fell finds made him space and way And when the saints saw Ihesu our saviour come with angels they were abashed of the great joy that they ne durst speak but with great and soft heart saying thus. Our lord god and our saviour thou art come to us king of glory to deliver us out of the bonds fro these false felons And blessed be thy name for now shall we be made hole. Than came our lord Ihesu and burst all the bonds that we were bound with and commanded that we should be delivered of all anguishes from that time forward. and when the pyrnce of hell with all his fell sergeants saw the great brightness they had than huge sorrow and dread. than ten princes of hell rose up of their seties with huge roaring & crying and said thus with great wementing O Ihesu how we be overcome by the what man art thou that reysyst thy request against god unknowing us what art thou that brekyst all our power what art thou that art so great and apredyst so little in earth. What art thou that were so meek & lowly in earth and now art thou a prycelly fighter in form of man And now king of glory that were deed and now thou levyst & now all creturs tremylle & quake by thy cross & by thy death. & were buried in a Sepulchre and art descended down to us all quick creatures tremyll & quake by thy death & all the four elements/ showed their tokens And now hast thou delivered all that were deed & distroubled & put to mischief all our foul fell ministers. What art thou that hast delivered them that were distrained here among us for their sin and hast cleped them again to their first franchise. what art thou that yevyst lystght to them that are blind by the brightness of thy godhead. & than all that were in hell cried with one voice and said A what art thou that art so mighty a man and so clear in mayest shining without blame and clean of earthly sin what art thou that entryst in to our region & countries without dread and dowteste no point of turmenting but haste fro us all though that were strained in our bodies peraventure thou art that Ihesu that our prince Satan said to our princes that thou shouldest take to the all the power of the world by thy death of the cross Than our lord Ihesu christ took Satan & bond him and delivered him in to hell to the prince of turmentrye & sorrow Than beheld satan saying thus to him A thou prince of perdition Beelzebub with thy three heads liar upon the Angels of god why hast thou do this false deed A which a dyspoyling thou behightest us when thou let him fall to such a deed what harm to us thou deed when thou let the king of glory be crucified. A thou falls sathan thou ne wottest never what thou hast do for this Ihesu hath illumined all the darkness of death with the clearness of his divinity & hath now broke all the gates of our deep presons and unbound all that were therein/ and them that were in our turmentreys they scorn us. And by their prayers we shall ever after be overcome that never afore durst say one word against us. And now shall never none of mankind come among us but ever shall lead us where they will that never afore durst do against us And now are they filled full of marvelous joy by the preysing of their lord god. A. O thou falls and cursed Satan author of death and father of pride thou shouldest first inquired his cause and if he had be worthy death. And if thou haddest found no cause of death in him thou shouldest have left him on live but thou fond no fault nor cause to crucify him & for thou were so hardy to crucify him thou art the cause that he is entered in to our region. And wot thou what thou hast do I say to the thou hast all forlorn & we wretches shall dwell in turmentrye that ever shall last as hell. Byer of the world. blessed be thy name as thou showdest to us by thy holy laws and by thy holy prophets thou bought us again by thy holy cross and thou art come down to us by thy holy virtue for to draw us fro death and fro the horrible pains of hell And than our blessed lord lifted up his hand & made the fygne of the holy cross on Adam & on his holy saints And so he took Adam by the ryghe hand and stied out of hell up in to the air & all the saints followed him. Than king david said with an high voice. Cantate dno canticum nowm quia mirabilia fecit). That is to say singeth to our lord god a new song for he hath wrought marvels. ANd than our blessed lord took Adam our form father by the hand and led him in to paradise and all his holy saints with him and them he delivered to Mychaell his archaungyl and he led them in to paradise where is endless joy/ And when they were entered in to paradise there came against them ii men of great age. And the saints asked them what they were. and how it might be that they were there so bodily and had not be with them in hell. Than one of them answered and said I am Emoke that by the word of god I am translated hither. and he that is with me here is Elyas tesbytes which was brought hither in a brenning char and yet suffered we no death but we are kept to the coming of antichrist to fight with him with words and tokens of our lord god and of him we snall be slain in the city of Iherusalem And ii days and a half after we shall rise fro death to life and betake up in the skies. and as Emoke told this to the saints there came to them a man bearing on him the sign of the holy cross. And set me on the right side saying thus to me Suffer and hold the here a little while For Adam that is father of all man kind with all his children and all the friends of god shall come hither by the virtue of Ihesu Christ's passion And when the holy saints as patryarkies & prophets heard these words of this thief than they said all with one voice. blessed be our lord god almighty endless father of mercy that such grace hath given to sinners and brought us to the joy of paradise and in to the pasture of delight & to endless joy. When that Annas & Cayphas were thus conjured they charged & commanded that all should go out of the temple save Pylat & they ii Than they said to Pylat good judge thou hast so conjured us that we must nedis show to thee/ the troth of this that thou hast inquired of us sir into the time that we had crucified Ihesu.
