〈…〉 Cayphas and asked them what was prosylyte. And they said that proselyty was paynims children/ and so be his disciples/ & for that they say that he is borne in fornication. Than answered these xii men whose names were such. Lazarus. Astorius. Antonius. jacob. Serius. Gamaliel. Isaak. Fyves. Azarius. Agrippa. Amenus/ and judas. We say that we ne are proselyty/ but we be jews children/ and we say troth that we were there as joseph wedded Mary. Than called pilate these xii men that said thus/ & he conjured them by the height of holy Cezar if that he were not borne in fornication that ye bear witness & surety & swear before all this people. And these xii men answered to pilate and said we have be our law that we ne aught to swear for it is sin/ but we will swear by holy Cezar/ if it be not as we say we will be culpable of the death. we see well the jesus is not borne in fornication to be believed by their word. And we say all said that other that he is borne in fornication/ and that he is an evyil worker. And thus he saith that he is gods son and thereto a king/ & yet thou wilt not believe us that have the law to keep. Than commanded pilate that all should go out of the parlore save these xii. men that said that our lord was not borne in fornication/ & also he commanded that our lord jesus should be led out unto that one side of the parlore. Than said pilate to these xii men. For what cause is it the they will bring jesus to death. And they answered & said that the masters of the law had him in hate because that he healed maladies and sicknesses upon the Sabot day. Than said pilate. A I see well for his good works they will slay him. Than went pilate out of the parlore full of heaviness and said to all the Jews I have witness that I can find in this man no point of death. The jews answered/ if he had never been an evil doer we ne had not delivered him to the. Than said pilate to the jews. what said god that there should be no man slain but of me. Than eatred pilate in to the parlore again/ and called our lord jesus to him & said. Thou art king of jews. Our lord jesus answered again/ thou sayest the of thyself or else other have said that to the of me. Than said pilate unto our lord jesus christ. Thou w●●est well that I am no jew but of thine own nation/ the bishops and princes have delivered the to me/ but I wot never what evil thou hast done them/ if thou be king of jews answer to me. Our lord answered to him my kingdom is not in this world/ for if my kingdom were in this world my ministers would not be against me/ nor I should not have be delivered to the but my kingdom is not now here. Than answered pilate/ than I see well thou art a king. Than answered our lord jesus/ thou sayest the I am a king/ and to that I was borne/ and for to declare to the world that who so be of troth will here my word. Than said pilate what is troth by thy word there is but little troth in the world. Our lord said to pilate/ understand troth how the it is judged in earth of that that dwell therein. And thus said pilate to the jews I have witness both in heaven and in earth/ son and m●ne that I can find no cause of death in this man. Than answered the jews/ is not this a●grete cause that he saith of our temple/ that he might destroy it and raise it again in three days. Than said pilate what temple is that the which ye speak of. And the jews answered that it was the temple of Solomon the which was in edifying. xivii. year/ & this Jesus' said that he would destroy it/ and raise it again in three days. I am said pilate without guilt of spilling of this man's blood/ and that shall ye well see what will ye do with him. The iewes that were full of envy cried all with one voice/ the shedding of his blood upon us and upon our children. ¶ How pilate took of the most ancient men of the law/ as bishops & other masters to counsel. Cayphas. pilate. Annas. THan pilate took of the most ancient men as bishops and masters of the law and said. Sirs do not against this simple man for I do you to wete that he is not worthy to be deed/ is not he more worthy that hath heeled maladies than he had broke the sabot day. Than said the Jews a good judge take heed if any man hath done a forfeit against Cezar/ were he not worthy to be deed. And than pilate said unto them yes. Than said the Jews moche more is he worthy that forfayteth against god/ for he said himself that he is gods son/ for when we conjured him that he should tell us if he were gods son or not/ he deny. 〈◊〉 it not/ & yet he said that we should see the son of man●●●tynge upon the right hand of the godhead/ coming out of the skies of heaven. And when pilate heard thus he led our lord jesus upon that other part of the parlore & said to him. Man I ne wot what I may do with ye. Than said our lord jesus to pilate. Moyses and the prophets here before preached of my passion & of my resurrection. When pilate heard this he ꝓ nounced all the words of our lord to the Jews. And anon the jews said to pilate. What wouldest tho●● hear more of his false felaunder. Than said pilate take him in to your synagogue/ and dame there on him your law. The jews answer/ our law commandeth that if any man sin or trespass against any man he shall withdraw him xiii days out of the temple. And he the sinneth or trespasseth against god by slander/ our jaw biddeth that he shall be stoned to death. And for as much as jesus saith that he shall sit in heaven upon the right side of the divine majesty/ and that he shall come from heaven in to the skies/ for this sclannder we will that he be crucified. Than said pilate the is not good that ye cast you for to do. And than pilate looked about him & saw many men & women that wept sore/ and held their countenance upon him. Than under Cezare the Emperor. When the Jews heard this than they said to Nychodemus. ye take thou the troth of jesus/ and the thou may have thy dwelling place with him. Than lift up Nychodemus his hands to heaven & said. God grant that I may have part of the troth of jesus/ & a dwelling place might I have of him. God grant that it may be so as ye have said ¶ How certain jews showed to pilate the miracles that christ had done. ❀ ANd anon there start forth a jew afore pilate/ and thus he said. My lord pilate I say beddred xxxviii year/ & every day for the most part in peril of death/ & so it befell that my lord jesus came by me and had pity on me/ and than he had me take my bed and go home in to my house/ and anon with his words I was made hole. And anon after came an other jew afore pilate and thus he said. My lord pilate I was poor blind/ as my lord jesus passed afore me I said to him jesus the son of david have mercy on me. And he had mercy on me/ and he put his hand to mine eyen & than I saw. And than another jew that stood afore pilate said. Sir I was a me fell & my lord jesus christ made me hole with his word. After that came an aged woman afore pilate and said my lord pilate I was diseased with the reed flix three peer and more/ and Idyd not but touch the hem of the vesture of my lord jesus/ and anon I was made hole of my malady/ & therefore/ my lord pilate have mercy on him/ and do him not to death. And when pilate heard this he feared. And anon a great company of jews that our lord jesus had heeled cried all with one voice. A great saviour of the people is our lord jesus. when pilate heard this he said unto Cay phas & Anna's/ and other masters of the law. I marvel why that your forne faders princes & bishops of the law healed not men of their infirmities/ as this man doth. And they answered no word thereto. And these men that our lord had heeled cried with one voice Our blessed lord jesus hath wrought many divine miracles/ as he that raised Lazar fro death to life which had lain deed four days in the earth/ and our lord jesus by the virtue of his words raised him out of his moment & brought him a live among us & his sisters/ & made him to sit with him at his table. When pilate heard this he was all abashed for fere & cried with an high voice to the jews & said. Men what is this that ye wyldo. Ice that without guilt ye will shed the blood of him that hath nothing wrought amiss. Than rose pilate up & took Nychodemus to him & these xii men which that said that our lord was not borne in fornication/ & thus he said to them Sirs I have great affection in you/ tell me what I shall do with him. And they said sir we can not say but we will never asseut to the will of the masters of the law nor to their works/ and therefore let thence well to their souls that they may be saved at the day of judgement. Than turned pilate to the masters of the law & to the other jews and said thus to them Sirs ye know well that it is the custom among us to deliver a prisoner to the people for the love of our sabot the high day of sacrifice/ & sirs ye know well that I have in my prison a noble pryloner a man sleer which is worthy to be deed/ whose name is Barabas/ will ye that I deliver you him or else jesus which is with out guilt & not worthy to die. The princes and the byf shops and the old men they said with one voice we will that thou deliver to us Barabas. Than said pilate what will ye than say that I do with jesus which is called cryft. Than said the Jews with an high/ let him be crucified/ & some said if thou let him go thus/ thou ne art Cezars' friend sith that he laid this foul slander that he is gods son/ and thereto a king/ for who so ever said that he is a king/ he speaketh against Cezare. And when that pilate herd this he was wonders heavy/ and thus he said to the Jews all days from the beginning ye have be contrarious to them that have done well to you/ & to him ye have done moche harm & moche turmenting. Than said the Jews what is he that hath done so much good to us Than said pilate our god which hath holpen you & delivered you out of the hands of Egypte which drowned your enemies in the deepness of the reed see & ●edde you through the water of the see also dry as upon the ground. And also in desert he rained unto you manna and made water come out of the hard stone in desert which that ye drank of & all your beasts. And also he gave to you the ten commandments of the law. And in all these commandments that he hath charged you with ye have been contrarious to your god. As when ye made a calf to be your god/ which would have disherited you & destroyed you ne had Moses be your master/ that prayed to your god for you for the peril that ye were in/ & now ye say to me that I hate my king & am not his friend if I deliver not this man jesus that hath cured moche of your people of many if yrmy ties which is your king that never died evil but ever moche goodness and profit. When the jews herd this they were full of anger & maltalent/ & thus they cried all together & said. Our king is Cezar emperor of Rome. For we know well that jesus is no king though that kings sought him in Bedlam & said the they sought the king of jews/ & offered to him gifts/ but yet is he thertore no king/ we know well the when He road heard say that they sought the king of jews/ he would have slain him therefore. And so he did slay thousands or children therefore in Bedlam & all the country a bout/ as we have said to you here before. when pilate heard this he commanded them to be still/ & than he said to them. A is it not he than that Herode sought for to slay. And the Jews answered & said that it was he. And anon pilate did commanded water to be brought to him/ & afore them all he washed his hands saying thus. I am not guilty of the spilling of this rightful man's blood & the may you well see/ but the blood of him be upon you & upon your children. Than commanded pilate the a great company of knights should be brought afore him to his parlore. And than Pysate cast the sentence upon our lord jesus christ and thus he said to him. ¶ How pilate commanded the jews the no bylaynes should put jesus christ to his passion but knights. Thine own people hath dyspreved all that ever I have spoken for thee/ and therefore I command at the beginning the no man lay hands on him but if he be a knight/ or elles of gentle blood/ for it is not sitting that a king should be slain of villains/ & therefore I command that at the first beginning that he be scourged to the pleasing of the first princes/ and than lift him up upon the cross/ and with him two thieves the which that hath benevyll doers/ that one by name ●ysmas and that other Gesmas/ and let them be slain with villains/ and no gentiles to touch them. And than our lord jesus was led out of the parlore/ and the two thieves with him/ and than they lebde them in to another parlore/ wherein was a pillar of white marble/ and there they despoiled our lord jesus out of his clothes/ and bound him naked unto the pillar/ and there they beat him and scourged him with yerds & whips/ so hugely that there was no skin hole upon him/ and that was a pitiful sight for to see that blessed body standing all naked before all the people scorning & saying thus to our lord god in his scourging/ do gladly our king for this is our first beginning. And than the masters of the law said to the knights/ do on our king a soft garment and let us crown him for our king. And than the knights died upon him a cloth of silk which for abundance of blood was so clonge to him/ that at the pulling of it was an hundred fold more pain to him than was his scourging. And when they had pulled of this garment they died on him a reed man tell of silk/ and after that they set a garland of thorns upon his heed/ & they pressed so sore the garland of thorns upon his heed that the thorns pierced down in to his brain & so at the last they led him to the cross/ and there they crucified him between two thieves. Dysmas an the right side/ and Gelmas on the left side. And so they put to his mouth a sponge full of azell and gall a that they put to his mouth for to drink of. And thus that blessed lord jesus suffered all that ever they would do to him. And than our lord jesus looked up to the father and said thus. My father forgive them this trespass/ for they ne wot what they do/ & than the knights kest lots upon his vesture for to wete who should have it/ and than the princes of the law with bysthoppes and many other/ they cried unto our lord jesus and thus they said. Thou hast heeled many other/ and thou ne mayst hele thyself/ if thou be gods son come down of the cross and we shall believe on the. And than said the knights in scorn if thou be king of jews deliver now thyself. And than was commanded that a knight should be brought forth whose name was Longeus/ and him they made to put a spear to jesus side. This knight Longeus was blind/ and so the princes of the law made him for to pierce our lords side & so there came out of his side both blood & water/ & so the blood came running down by the spear shaft unto Longeus hand/ and he by adventure wiped his eyen with his hand/ and anon he died see. ❀ ANd than pilate died write a bill upon the which was written. jesus nazarenus rextudeorum. That is for to say. jesus of Nazareth king of jesus. And this was written in hebre we/ greek/ and latin. And this title they put above his heed upon the cross. Than Gesmas the thief which hinge on the left side of our lord said thus to our lord jesus/ if thou be god deliver both the and us. Than Dysmas that hinge on the tyghte side of our lord jesus blamed him for his words & thus he said to him. It seemeth by thy words that thou dreadest not god nor believest not in him/ and therefore thou art endlessly dampened/ for well thou wottest that we have deserved that we suffer death/ but he hath right nought forfeited nor misdone/ and without deler ve he is brought here to. And when Dysmas had said these words he looked upon jesus christ and thus he said to him. Lord jesus have mercy upon me when thou comest in to thy kingdom. And than answered jesus unto him and said. This day shalt thou be with me in Paradise/ & that time was about midday/ and fro this time unto none of the day the son was hid and lost his brightness/ and the veil of the temple was smitten down to the ground in two parties and some men say that an angel died it with a trace of fire. And this angel said many one hearing I am witness of the passion of jesus christ. After that our lord jesus christ cried with an high voice and said. father in to thy hands I be take my spirit/ & than he yielded up his soul unto his father. And when Centurio that was prince over the jews/ and Constable in like wise saw these tokens that were be fall he glorified god & said/ forsooth this man was right full/ and that is well seen by the tokens that are be fallen And so all the people that were there as good folks when the saw these works of the virtue of our lozde they smote the yrbrestes with their hands. ❀ ¶ How Centurio told pilate of the wonders that was at Christ's passion/ and the same pilate told the jews thereof/ and of the precious cloth that our lord was buried in. ❀ Cayphas. pilate. Centurio. ANd Centurio told to pilate all that was be fall. And when pilate heard this he was wonders heavy and lory/ and so for forynesse and heaviness he ne eat nor drank that day Than called pilate the jews/ and thus he said to them. Marvel ye not of the tokens that here be fallen at the passion of jesus/ and that the son lost his light and also the day. And the jews said to pilate. Syrit was the clypse of the son as we have understanden of wise men afore us. Than said pilate how may it be that the veil of the temple is smitten a sunder and many graves undone/ & deed men rise up from death to life/ hath the clypse of the son done all this. All these tokens men tell me are befallen in the city of jerusalem/ & if ye believe not me ask Centurio/ & they that were with him which kept jesus. Than were these men brought forth afore the Jews which that bare witness/ & thus they said. Forsooth we say the in the dying of jesus the earth groaned & shaken as a water doth when it is moved/ & we same that many bodies arose frodeth to life/ & by these tokens we believe that this jesus is gods son. Than the apostles and holy women that had followed our ford jesus fro galilee/ saw that was befallen & that men had done to him drew them by themself. Than joseph of Barmathy kest him for to by a precious cloth for to wind our lord jesus in when he might get grant of pilate for to have the body. And on this wise came joseph by this precious cloth as ye shall here. ¶ There was a knight of Capharnane whose name was Levy/ this knight wedded a young lady/ and by process of time they had together a daughter/ whom they called Synon donia and her they put to learning/ & so by process of time she waxed a curious worker/ as of clothes of gold and clothes of silk/ and of all other women's works. And so at the last when god would this Levy died and than his wife for the great love that she loved him she fell in to a great malady as in a palsy/ so farforth that she might neither steer hand nor foot/ and so for this great sickness she fell in great poverty so farforth that she ne had to live upon/ but by the work of her daughters hands. And so it befell that upon the same day that our lord jesus was deed this lady said to her daughter. My dou ghter Syndonia thou knowest well that our great sabot day is near/ than must we eat our paske lamb/ & on this day is the great market at Barmathye/ therefore good daughter go and array thee/ & take some of thy work that thou hast wrought and buy us there such things as is needful to the & me at this holy tyme. Her daughter Sindonia answered to her mother and said/ mother your will shall be do ne/ and mother I do you to understand that I have wrought the curyousest cloth that ever was made/ for it fell so grac yously to work that it is more curious than I can skill of/ and than the lady said to her daughter let me see that cloth/ and Syndonia she wed this cloth to her mother. And when this lady saw this cloth she said thus. blessed be that lord that hath made the to work such a cloth/ and daughter upon my blessing sell it to no man but if he tell the what he shall do withal. And than this maid Syndonia washed & bawmed her/ and arrayed her to the market/ and in the market stood joseph of Barmathye with moche people speaking of our lords death/ and by adventure this maid Syndonia came before him/ & joseph of Bar mathye espied the cloth that hanged on her arm/ and asked her if she would sell that cloth. And she answered and said ye syr. And than joseph asked her the price & she said xxx besauntes. And anon joseph paid to her xxx besauntes. And Syndonia fell down to his feet praying him that he would tell her what he should do withal. And than he answered her & said. Daughter this day is deed an holy prophet that men called jesus of Nazareth/ and that holy prophet Ipurpose for to bury & wind in this cloth/ daughter now have I told the what Iwyll do withal/ and therefore tell me who made this cloth that I have bought of the. And this maid said that herself made it. And joseph asked her what was her name/ and she said Syndonia Than said joseph now after you I shall name this cloth for this cloth shall be named Syndonia/ & than this maid went home to her mother & told her how she had sped/ and her mother asked her what should be done with the cloth. And Syndonia told her that the holy prophet that was that time deed should be buried therein. And who shall bury him therein said this lady And Syndonia said that joseph of Barmathye should bury him therein. And when this lady heard this she said thus. Would my lord god & that prophet that I had given that cloth to his burying. And anon with that word she was more holer than ever she was afore And anon the lady and her daughter fell down to the ground upon their knees thanking our lord god of this glorious miracle. And so afterward our lord gave them such grace that the mother was wedded to a worthy duke/ & her daughter was Empress of Rome And so they lived ever after in our lords service/ & when joseph of barmathye had bought/ this precious cloth which was lord & Constable over all Pilate'S me/ he was a full good man & a rightful/ he was not assented to the accusations and words of the jews he abode the kingdom of god/ & so he came to pilate & asked him the body of jesus. And pilate granted him it. Than this joseph & Nychodemus took down the body of jesus of the cross/ and him he wound in this Sindonia that he had bought/ & he buried him in his monument/ where as never man was buried in & so the Jews would have slain joseph & the xii men the had spoken for our lord jesus afore pilate. And also they would have slain Nychodemus/ & also those that our lord had made hole of many great infirmities and alson they had discovered afore pilate all his good works that he had done in every place. ❀ ¶ How the jews conspired evil against Nychode muss and joseph/ and of many other marvels. THAN Nicholas demus. we wed high self to the Jews/ hicause the he was their prince & their guide/ & soon after there gathered a great multitude of jews in toy e temple afore Nigh chodemus/ and thus he said to them. How may this be that ye are entered in to this holy temple which have your hanoes bloody of the death of jesus that rightful man whom ye have untruly crucified. Than answer red to Nychodemus/ Annas & Cayphas/ simeon & Datan/ Gamaliei/ judas/ Levy/ Neptalim/ & all the other jews/ how art thou so hardy to come among us that art consenting to jesus/ and therefore such part as he hath must thou have with the in this world. Than answered Nychodemus and said. A men the peace of jesus be with me in this world/ and in that other endlessly. And the Jews answered & said. A men And as Nichodemus had answered thus/ came joseph of Barmathye among them & said thus to the Jews why be ye bevy to me with maletalente for jasked the body of jesus of pilate/ and Ido you to were that I have buried him in my new monument/ & wound him in a precious cloth the is called Syndonia. And I say to you that ye have wrought evil & sinfully the ye have untruly crucified jesus without deserving/ & also maliciously ye ꝑsed his side with a spear/ & when the Jews herd this they took joseph & commanded him to be kept well & thus they said to joseph. we know well the thou art not worthy to have a burying place among us for we shall give thy flesh & carrion to wild beasts & wild fowls/ and to be devoured with hounds. Than joseph said to them these words/ ye be like to proud Golyas as the prophet saith/ to me longeth vengeance & I shall yield it saith god. And yet when that pilate washed his hands & said I am unguilty of this man's blood shedding/ he answered & said/ the blood of him be on us & on our children/ wete it well that fro the time forward shall the wrath of god come upon you & upon your children as yourself said/ & when the Jews heard this they were right angry/ & put joseph in a dark prison & shut the door strongly & put thereto keepers. Than Annas & Cayphas and other bishops of the law/ kest for to assemble them after the sabot day for to slay joseph/ & when they were assembled they sent to the prison and undyde the door/ but they found not joseph therein/ wherefore they were sore abashed. ¶ How one of the knights that kept the sepulchre of our lord came and told the masters of the law how our lord was gone in to Galisee. ANd as they were in this are ruayling they and ne entered in to their synagogue/ & among them there came one of the knyghres that kept the sepulchre & to them he told right sickerly that our lord jesus was not in the monument. And anon the masters of the law asked him where the they had done him. And the knight thus answered them and said. As we kept the grave the earth shaken/ and than we saw verily that an angel descended down from heaven and lifted up the stone from the monument/ and set him there upon/ and his face was very bright/ and his vesture was white as snow/ and for the great dread that we had we lay as we were deed. Than we heard the aungelt say unto the women that were comen to the sepulchre dysmaye you not nor dread you not/ for I know well that ye seek jesus that was crucified/ but Ido you to were that he is risen and is not here/ for ye shall see him in galilee/ as he said to you before. And when the princes of the law heard this they said to the knight. Is jesus than on live/ we may not vyleve this that ye say. Than the knight answered them. jesus hath done many myracies that ye have well heard/ & seen and ye believe it not how should ye than believe us but your own demand is good/ when ye ask if jesus be on live/ whom than said the Iewes to the knight we shall yield to 〈◊〉 joseph if ye will yield to us jesus for we do you to were that joseph is in Barmathy Than said the knight/ & we do you to were that jesus is in Galilee risen from death to life/ & there they should see him. And when the Jews heard this they had great dread/ & thus they said among themself/ if men here these words of these knights they shall all believe in jesus. Than they assembled them together & gave to the knights treasure/ and thus they said to them. Goye and say to the people as ye lay & slept his disciples came privily by night & stole the body of jesus/ & if Py late know here of we shall excuse you. Thus the knights took this treasure & proclaimed as they commanded them/ & so their words were soon spread all about. THan came there three men which that height Fie nees/ Abbas/ and Levy/ these three men came fro Galilee in to jerusalem and thus they said to the princes & to all them that were in the synagogue. Sirs we have herd & seen jesus which that ye crucified & fit and speak to his disciples upon the mount of olyvete and there he preached to them & said. Go & preach my name & my gospel through out the world/ baptizing in the name of the father/ and the son/ and the holy ghost And what so ever he be that will be baptized & believe in me he shall be saved/ & he that believeth not shall be dampened. And when the princes heard this they said to these three men. Men give praising & worship to our lord jesus and be a know if this be true that ye have hard and leanly/ & these men said all together with one voice/ by that lord that is god of Abraham/ of ysa ac/ and jacob/ we saw jesusy tting and preaching to his disciples/ & if we cover this that we have herd and seen we should do great sin. And anon the princes rose up and held the law in their hands/ & thus they said to them. we conture you by the laws of our lord that ye keep this counsel the ye have said to us of jesus/ and so they gave to these three men great treasure/ and so they sent three knights with them for to bring them in to their own country/ and that they should nolenger abide in jerusalem. ❀ SO came there agrete assemble of comyns to the princes/ and thus they said with a great complaint/ what tokens are these that are befallen in israhel. Than Annas and Cayphas comforted them & said we ought not for to believe the knights that kept the sepulchre wherein that jesus was put/ they said to us that they had seen an angel lift up the stone from the monument/ and peradventure his dyseyples said to the knights/ and we wot well the they gave to the knights great treasure for to say thus/ and so stolen away his body/ thus men ought to byleveus rather than the disciples that gave the knights great treasure for to bear false witness. Than arose Nychodemus up and thus he said to them/ ye have herd what these three men have said & sworn upon the law that they saw jesus sit and speak to his disciples upon the mount of olyuete/ and there he stied up to heaven. And ye wot well that the scripture telleth us that Elye the holy prophet was ravished in to paradise/ and when men asked his disciple Elyze we where that his father Elye was/ he answered ravished in to heaven. & than they supposed well the he was ravished by the holy ghost & left him somewhere on the mounts of Israel/ & therefore they said let us seek some men that may go and seek him. So they went and sought three days & three nights/ but they could not find Elye/ & therefore I counfeyle you for to send some for to seek the mounts of Is●ahell/ for peraventure the holy ghost had ravished jesus/ & peraventure he may be found/ let us than do penance for the trespass the we have done. This counsel of Nychodemus was pleasing to all the Jews & so they sent men for to seek our lord jesus/ but they might not find him in no place. And won these men were repaired again they said to the te was/ we have lought jesus on every hill of Israel/ & in every dale & in every place/ but we can find him no where but we have found joseph in the city of Barmathy/ & when the princes herd this they were wonders joyful & merry/ & they glorified god the joseph was found/ & so the fewes & may sters of the law assembled them together/ & kest among them how they might speak to joseph/ & so they made letters which said thus. Peas be with the & also with them the be with the/ we know well the we have spned in god & in thee/ & therefore father joseph come to us sith the we have knowing the we have grievously sinned & trespassed flyenst the & hugely we marvel of thy deliverance & taking away fro us. we know well the we conspired evil counsel against the but goddelyvered the fro us/ but peas be with the father joseph worships of all people. ¶ How the Jews chose viii men that were joseph's trendes to desire him to come to them. ❀ THan they chose. viii. men which that were friends to joseph & said when ye come to joseph salve him in peace/ & do to him greetings in our behalf & deliver to him these letters. So these men went forth to the city of Barmathye/ and when they came afore joseph they salved him & great him & delivered to him the letters And when jeteph had read these letters he said thus, blessed be my lord god that hath covered me with his wings/ and also blessed might he he that hath saved me from all mischief. Than joseph lad all these men in to his place/ and the next day aftes he took his horse and road with them in to jerusalem. And when the Jews with the masters of the law heard tell of his coming they went worshipfully against him/ and when they met with him they said thus to him. Peas be at thy coming father joseph/ & joseph answered. The peace of our lord be to all his true people. And than the masters of the law with all the people they kysted joseph. And Nychodemus led joseph in to his house. Than the next day after Annas and Cayphas and Nychodemus lad joseph in to the temple/ & thus they said to him. father joseph give us knowledge and to god this temple of that we shall are of you/ father joseph ye know well that ye berryed the body of jesus/ and father ye know well that we shut you inpryson & we could not find you therein & therefore tell us what befell there then joseph answered & said what ye died she its me in the eldse prison upon the sabot day as I was in my●● or y●●●● & prayers the place was spread above me with huge light as me thought feont the foute parties of the air/ and so Ilyfte up my heed and saw mylorde jesustande fast by me shining with great clearness/ & so for dread that I had Ife●dovone flat to the goounde. Than my blessed lord Issaher●● me by the h●●● h●●●de and ly●● me up from the groside and washed my fate kyssyn●● me and thus he said to me. Brother joseph the are elens by the water of thy faith/ for thy sins been released & forgiven/ and theremy frenbe have ●od●e●e 〈◊〉 set hold me & know what I am and so joyde behold ● him & said any may stir Elye and he answated again & laid. I am not Elyt but I am josucryst the wh● the thou buried worshipfully/ & than said I to him Lord show me thy monument where Ibaryed the And than my ford jesus hent me by the hand and lad me to the monument/ and there he showed me the precious Syndonia that I wound him in. And than I knew verrly that he was my lord jesus/ & so I fell down and worshipped him/ and said my lord jesus blessed might thou be that art come hither for to visit me/ & through thy grace hast delivered me & so he held me by the hand and lad me to the city of Barmath ye. And than he lad me in to my place and said to me. joseph brother peace be with thee/ and look the thou go not out of thy place these xi days/ for the Jews shall do many great distresses to many of my friends/ & now shall I go to my disciples & speak to them of the saluac yond of the world. And when he had said that word he vanished away from me/ and when the princes of the law & other jews heard this that joseph laid/ they were hugely abashed/ & for the great dread that they had they fell down to the earth/ and so they cried and said. what tokens are these that are befallen in Isra hell the knights that kept the sepulchre bear witness that they law an angel descend down from heaven/ & that jesus was risen frodeth to life/ and that he shall he seen in Galelee. And we know welthat jesus was a man/ and his father and mother we know well/ both joseph and mary. What may we say here against. Than said a jew whose name was levius. I know well the beginning of jesus/ for I have been moth with them/ for upon a time as I was in the temple in mine offerings and orylons/ that same time saint simeon took him in his arms/ and thus he said to him. My lord godlette now thy servant come to the in peace/ for mine eyen have seen thy health that thou ordained or any people was. Than said the Jews. Let us send for these three men that said that they saw jesus speaking to his disciples upon the mount of of yvete. And so they sent for these three men/ and when they were comen for them they said truly that god of heaven was on live/ and that we saw berely how that jesustped in to henen afore all his dyseyples. THan answered Annas & caiphass/ out law saith that by the words of two or three is sufficient witness/ what may we sayhereto/ we know well the Enocke pleased god/ and was ravy flhed in to heaven & the fepulchre of Moses might never be founden. pilate delivered to us this jesus which we bear with frourgꝭ & crowned him with thorns/ & after ward was crut yfyed/ & smote him in the side with a spear & joseph buried his body in the sepulchre/ which the now beareth witness that he is on live. And these men say that they saw him sty up in to heaven/ & than joseph told another great marvel that there rose up many deed bodies out of their graves I wot well that some men of them have been in jerufalem/ which that misbelievers have not seen/ & we know well that saint Simeon received jesuin his arms in the temple which was a full holy man/ this Simeon had two sons whose names were Garius & Levicius & we were at theyrdeth & at their but yenge. Go now and search their graves/ but I wot well they be not there/ but they be in that city of Barmathye in orylons & speak to noman/ but keep them still as though they were deed/ & therefore let us go to them with worship/ & bring them to the temple/ & when we have conjured them pars venture they will tell us somewhat of the resurtete you of jesus/ and how that he rose from death to life. ¶ How the jews went to seek two deed men that were risen from death to life in Barmathye. Cayphas. Annas. Earius. ANd so all the jews & masters of the law went to the graves of these two brethren/ & so they found them not there. And anon they went to the city of Barmathy which was xl mile fro Jerusalem/ & so they found thenlyving. Than they kissed them & led them with them to Jerusalem with great worship/ & than they lad them in to their synagogue/ & when they had shut the doors surely they took their lawis/ & confured them by the law of Israel/ & by god adonay if that theylyved/ & if that jesus was god of Israel that raised them when Garius & Leviciꝰ herd this coniuracyon/ they looked up together in to heaven. And than they made signs of the holy cross on them/ & than they said & spoke/ give us ꝑ thement & ink/ that we may write things that we have herd and seen/ and so they gave to them both ink and perchement/ and when they were set they wrote both together and said thus. ¶ Our lord jelucryst is resurrection of the death & life that believe upon him/ suffer us to say the secrets of thy divine majesty that thou didst in hell by the death of thy holy cross/ for we be conjured by the for to speak of thee/ thou hast commanded to thy servant by mighell thine archaungel that we should tell the secrets of thy divine majesty what thou didst in hell after thy holy resurrection as we were with our forefathers in the great privy deepness of darkness there came a great brightness as it had been a beam of light fro the son/ and that kest alight royal upon us/ & anon Adam the was our forefather/ and patriarchs & prophets rose up lightly & said. This is the light of him that behyght us for to send to us endless light and anon ysaac with an high voice began for to say. ¶ This is the light of our father son of god as I said here afore when I was on live in the land of zabulon and neptalem over the flomiordan. The people that sat iderkenes saw great brightness of light & the light was sent to them that sat in the shadow of death that was there as it had been a star shining above upon us. And as we were in this joy and gladness of this light that shone upon us there came to us our father simeon and thus he said to us with great joy. ¶ glorify our lord god jesus cryst our saviour which I received a child in the temple/ and took him in mine arms saying thus/ let now thy servant pass for mine eyen have seen thy health/ when all the great company of layntes that were in hell heard this they were wonders joyful & merry. And after came another manto us as it had been an hermit/ & our forefather asked him what he was/ & he answered again and said I am a voice of a prophet of an high company for I have gone afore the face of his coming/ & also to make ready the way of his coming/ and to give health & cunning to his people in the remystyon of their sins/ & when Isawe him come tome I was fulfilled with the holy ghost/ and thus I said/ se the daub of god & be hold him that doth away sin of the world/ and him I have baptized in the Flomiordan & upon him I saw the holy ghost delcende in likeness of a dove. And than I heard a voice that came fro heaven saying thus/ this is my son in whom great pleasing is unto me. And now I am come before him to you to she we to you the son of god is come fro he yght for to deliver us that sit in darkness/ and in the shadow we of dethabyding his mercy. When that Adam our forefather was baptized anon he said to Seth his son. Tell to thy thyldrens & to patryatkes & prophets that the angel laid to the when I sent the to the gates of paradise that thou shouldest pray our lord god that he would send to me by his aungeil of the fruit of light/ & also of the oil mercy for to anoint withal my membrs such time that I was fulfilled full of malady & sickness. Than Seth start up & said with an high voice. As I was at the gates of paradise praying our lord god of the oil of mercy our lord sent Myghell his archaungell sayage thus unto me our lord god hath sent me to thee/ travail not for to have the oil of mercy to anoint with Adam thy father/ Ido do the to were thou mayst not have it unto the last day be complete of .v. M. and .v. C. year. And than shall the son of god jesus christ come in to the world for to reyfe the body of Adam thy father/ and the bodies of the holy saints patriarchs and prophets/ & than shall he be baptized in flomiordan/ & when he cometh out of the water than shall he anoint with the oil of mercy all those that shall believe in him/ & than shall the son of god go down to hell and lead Adam thy father in to paradise to the tree of life & mercy. when the patriarchs & prophets heard this the which Seth had said/ they made than great joy & gladness/ and as they made this great joy Satan the prince of hell and master of death said to the masters of tormentry Make the ready for to receive jesus christ the which that glorifieth himself to be the son of almighty god and yet he is man that dreadeth death/ for he did say my soul is heavy against death. And this jesus hath wrought many heavinesses & evils against me for them that I made blind crooked & lame & mesel he hath made hole by his word. And also the deed that I have brought to the he hath raised to life. Than the prince of tormentry answered to Satan what is he that is somyghty by his word/ and thou sayest that he is man that dreadeth death/ all that ever were mighty in earth thou hast brought them to my bonds/ & if he be so mighty in manhood as thou sayest. I say to the he is so mighty in divinity that we may never resist against him/ & if the he said that he dread death I say to the that he will deceive the and overcome the at all times/ & than answered Satan to the masters of the tourmentry and said Why dreadest thou for to receive mine adversary and thine I have made the jews for to be against him/ and I have made ready the rod that he shall be smitten with/ and I have made ready the tree that he shall be crucified on/ & three nails for to fasten him thereto/ and I have made a drink with azel & gall that he shall drink/ and I tell the that he shall be deed anon/ & I shall bring him readily to the. Than answered the prince of the tourmentrye/ this that thou sayest that he by his might hath taken fro me them that were deed/ what hopest thou he may be that doth such masteries by his word. I dread me peradventure that this was he that took away lazar from me and raised him that was three days deed/ whom that I held boside in my prison/ and him he yielded to life by his word. Than an sweared Satan and said. I do the to were that he is the same jesus. And when the prince of tormentry heard this he said to Satan I conture the by thy virtue & mine that thou bring him neither to me/ for when I heard the commandment of his word I trembled and shaken for dread and all my fell sergeants with me so that we ne might keep lazar/ but he i'll we fro us so swift as it had been an Eagle out of the bonds that we had him in/ and the earth that he lay in deed undid and yielded him quick fro him/ weenest thou Satan for to hold such a lord that took his servant fro us maugre us all by the virtue of his word/ were thou well this without doubt if thou bring him hither that is so mighty to save all mankind/ he will put us hens I say Satan and all though that be shit in our prison and strained by their sin in our bonds by him they shall be delivered and brought unto everlasting life And as they spoke thus together there came a voice as it had been thunder of the holy ghost/ and thus he said. (At tollite portas pricipes uras) ye princes of death unclose your gates/ for the prince of glory shall enter therein And when the prince of hell heard this voice he said to sathan/ go hens fro us & thou be might you fight/ go fight with him that is king of glory. And so helkest sathan fro him/ & than he said to his fell sergeants shut mightily your gates with iron bars & fight mightily/ & withstand him mightily that the king of bliss come not herein/ that our strength be not taken from us/ and we be put unto endless sorrow we. And when the saints heard this they said with an high voice to the devils and to the princes of turmenting wretches undo your gates and let the king of glory come in. Than said david the prophet/ prophesied I not when I was living in earth & said thus (Quia hec est dies quam fecit dns exultemus et letemur in ea That is to say/ this is the day that god made/ therein we may be blithe and glad. And after him said isaiah to all the saints. Said I not when I was living that the deed should be lift up & the bodies that lie in graves should be raised up frode the to life/ & that they the be in earth should be full of joy/ & yet I say now more ye cayt yves of death and hell where is now your pride where is now your victory. when the saints heard isaiah say these words/ they said all at ones to the prince of hell. Undo your gatis wretches for ye be but taken & bound & may not help yourself. Than came the voice the second time saying thus (Attollite portas uras) And when that hell herd this voice come two times he answered unadvisedly thus (Quis ēiste rex glory that is to say/ what is the king of bliss. And than answered David saying thus. I know well that voice by his words of the holy ghost. For I prophesied it afore, and now I say to the hell (Duns deus fortis etpotens dns potens in prelio/ ipse est rex glory) this is for to say. Our lord god strong and mighty/ & mighty in battle/ he is king of glory (Et ipse de celo in terram aspexit ut audiret gemetus compeditorun ut solueret filios interemptorun) That is to say/ that blessed lord beheld fro heaven to earth to here the waymenting of them that are in bonds/ and that he should unbind the children that were brought to the death to be slain/ & therefore thou vylsayne stinking hole undo thy gates the the king of bliss may come in. ANd as david had said this to hell/ came upon them the glorious desired king of glory in form of man/ & enlumyned all the darkness of hell with the glorious brightness of his glorious face/ & all the gates & shyttyngꝭ with iron bars & bolts all to burst in his holy coming/ & all the tell fiends made him space and way. And when the saints saw jesus our saviour come with angels/ they were abashed of the great joy so that theyne durst speak/ but which great and soft heart they said thus. Our lord god & our saviour thou art come to us king of glory to deliver us out of the bonds fro these false felons/ & blessed be thy name/ for now shall we be made hole. Than came our lord jesus & braced all the bonds that we were bound with/ & commanded that we should be delivered of all anguishes from that time forward. And when the prince of hell with all his fell sergeants saw the great brightness/ they had than huge sorrow and dread. Than ten princes of hell rose up of their setes with huge full roaring and crying/ & said thus with great waymentyng. O jesus how we be overcome by thee/ what man art thou that reysest thy request against god unknowing us what art thou that breakest all our power what art thou that art so great & appeared solytel in earth. what art thou that was so meek & lowly in earth & now thou art a princely fyghter in form of man & now king of glory the was deed & now thou livest and now all creatures tremble and quake by the cross and by the death/ & were buried in a sepulchre & art descended down to us/ all quick creatures tremble & quake be thy death/ & all the four elements showed their tokens/ & now hast thou delivered all them that were deed & dystroubled/ & put to mischief all our full fell my hysters'. what art thou that hast delivered them that were dystreyned here among us for their sin/ & haste called them again to their first franchise. what art thou that givest light to them that are blind by the brightness of thy godhead. And than all that were in hell cried with one voice and said. A what art thou the art so mighty a man & so clear in majesty shining with out blame & clean of earthly sin/ what art thou that interest in to our region & country without dread/ and doubtest no point of turmenting but haste fro us all though that were strained in our bonds/ peraventure thou art that jesus that our nrynce Satan said to our princes that thou shouldest take to the all the power of the world by thy death of the crossed. Than our lord jesus christ took Satan and bound him and del yvered him in to hell to the prince of tormentry. Than be held Satan saying thus to him. A ●chucnk●prynce of perdition Beelzebub with thy three hedes/ liar upon the angels of god why hast thou do this false deed. A what a dyffpoyling thou behyghtest us when thou let him fall to such a deed/ what harm thou did to us when thou let the king of glory be crucified. A thou falls Satan thoune wottest what thou hast done/ for this jesus hath enlumyned all the darkness of death with the clearness of his divinity/ and hath now broken all the gates of our deep pryfons/ and unbound all that were therein/ & they that were in our turmentryes they scorn us & by their prayers we shall ever after be over come that never afore durst say one word against us/ & now shall never none of mankind come among us but ever shall lead us where they will/ the never afore durst do against us/ & now are they fulfilled full of marvelous joy by the praising of their lord god. A thou prince of all shrewdness/ and father of all telonyes why hast thou done thus/ how durst thou do such a lord be crucified/ for now be all though that were in despair fro the beginning unto this time now in health & in endless te. And we shall never here their grudging groaning nor weeping. A thou fell Satan all the riches that thou hadst conquered by thine apple in paradise/ thou hast now lost by the tree of the cross/ and all thy joy is perished while that thou hast crucified him the was against thee/ & wete thou well that thou shalt suffer tormentry end lesly in mine horrible prison. A thou falls cursed Satan auctor of death & father of pride thou shouldest first have inquired his cause: & if he had be worthy death and if thou hadst found no cause of death in him thou shouldest have left him on live/ but thou found no fault nor cause to crucify him/ and because thou were so hardy to crucify him/ thou arte the cause that he is entered in to our region/ and wottest thou what thou hast done. I say to the thou hast all forlorn & we wretches shall dwell in turmentrye that ever shall last as hell And as Satan spoke thus came the king of bliss and thus he said to hell. Thou prince of hell Satan thy power shall be endlessly too dwell here in stead of Adam and his children & all my rightful people. and than our blessed lord spread forth his right hand & said come to me my holy & all that have mine image & my likeness which were dampened to the death by the fruit of the apple & by the devil/ & now may ye well see that the devil is dampened by the tree & by the cross/ & anon all the saints assembled them together under our lords hand. Than our lord took Adam by the right hand & said thus to him. My peace be with the and all my rightful children/ & all my holy saints/ & than our fornfad fell down on his knees afore our blessed lord weeping for joy/ & thus he said (Exaltabote dne qm suscepisti me non delectasti in imicos meos super me. Dne deus meus clamaut ad te et sanasti me deduristi ab iteris aiam meam sanasti me a descendentibꝰ in lacum) This is to say. My lord I shall enhance the for that thou hast taken me/ for thou ne hast suffered mine enymyes to be above me. My lord god I have crted to the & thou hast made me hole/ thou hast brought my soul out of hell & hast saved me from them the are fallen in the deepness of the lake. And than all the saints fell down to our lords feet saying all with one voice to our lord god/ thou art come to us bier of the world/ blessed be thy name as thou she west to us by the holy laws & by the holy prophets/ thou bought us again by thy holy cross and thou art come down to us by thy holy virtue for to draw us fro death/ & fro the horrible pains of hell/ and than our blessed lord lift up his hand & made the sign of the holy cross on Adam and on his holy saints. And so he took Adam by the right hand & stied out of hell up in to the air & all the saints followed him. Than king david said with an high voice (Cantate dnocanticum noū quia mirabilia fecet) That is to say. Sing to our lord god a new song/ for he hath wrought marvels (Ethec est gloria oibus sanctis eius) this is to say/ blessed be god for thy great joy to all his saints Than after david said Micheas (Quis deus sicut tu domine auferens iniquitatem & transgrediens peccataet nunc continens in testimonio tram tuam. etc.) That is for to say. Whois such a lord as our lord jesus christ is putting away all evils of sin/ and after him said Abacuk the prophet. Thou comest out with health unto thine humble people for to deliver all thy friends from all sorrows diseases and tribulations. And than after him said all the holy saints with one voice. blessed might thou be that cometh in the name of our lord jesus cryst/ for thou art joy and also bliss unto all thy true people (Alleluya) And than all the prophets pronounced all their prophecies that they had showed in earth with great pleasing to our lord god. And than all the saints said/ this is our lord god that shall govern us without end. Alleluya. ¶ How our lord led all his holy saints in to the joys of paradise/ & of the three men that they met. ANd than our lord took Adam our forefather by the hand and led him in to paradise and all his holy saints with him/ and them he delivered to Myghell his archaun gell/ and he led them in to paradise where as is end less joy. And when they were entered in to paradyle there came against them two men of great age and the saints asked them what they were/ and how it might be that they were there so bodily and had not been with them in hell. Than one of them answered and said I am Enocke that by the word of god am translated hither/ & he that is with me here is Elias tesbytes which was brought hither in a brenning chair/ & yet suffered we no death/ but we are kept to the coming of antichrist to fight with him with words & tokens of our lord god/ and of him we shall be slain in the city of jerusalem/ & three days and a half after we shall rise fro death to life/ & be taken up in the skies. And as Enocke told this to the saints/ there came to them a man bearing upon him the sign of the holy cross. And when all the saints saw him they said to him what man may thou be that hast here the likeness of a thief/ and why bearest thou the sign of the holy cross. And than this man answered unto them and said/ forsooth ye say truly that I was a thief/ & many cursed deeds did I in earth. And therefore the jews crucified me with our lord jesus/ and when I saw the sterynges of the elements in his passion I believed that he was saviour of the world/ and maker of all creatures/ & king almighty/ than said I to him/ lord have mercy on me/ and have me in mind when thou comest in to thy kingdom. And anon that blessed lord took my prayer/ and said to me. This day shalt thou be with me in paradise. And than he took me the sign of the holy cross/ and said to me/ bear this sign with the & go to paradise. And if the angel that is keeper of paradise will not suffer the toentre in/ she we him the sign of the cross/ and say to him the jesucryst which that was now crucified sent me to thee/ & when I had said this to the angel/ anon he undid the gates and led me in to paradise/ and set me on the right side saying thus to me/ suffer and hold the here a little while/ for Adam which is father of all mankind with all this children and all the friends of god shall come hither by the virtue of crystes passion. And when the holy saints as patriarchs & prophets had herd these words of this thief than they said all with one voice. blessed be our lord god almighty endless father of mercy that such grace hath given to sinners & brought us to the joy of paradise & in to the pasture of delight and to endless joy. Amen. THese are the holy secrets of the dsuynyte that we have seen I Garius & my brother Leviciꝰ but our lord god will suffer us no longer to tell and she we unto you the secrets of his divine yte/ for saint Myghell the archangel said to us/ rise & go in to the city of jerusalem/ and be there in prayers & glorify the holy resurrection of our lord jesus christ with your brethren that rose with you/ and that ye speak to no person/ but be you as domme unto the time that our lord shall suffer you for to show the secrets of his divinity/ and so the holy angel saint Mychaell commanded us to go to flomiordan to a place there that many are risen with us in witness of the resurrection of our lord jesus christ. Our lord god hath granted us three days to be in Iherusalem & hold there the holy palke of our lord god with our friends/ & also that we shall be baptized in the flomiordan each of us/ at that time making white stools. And thus saint Myghell commasided us that we should be in orisons in the city of Barmathye/ and the we should she we to you these holy secrets/ and therefore give praising to our lord god/ & be a know of your default/ and do penance that he may have mercy upon you. Now peas be with you of our lord jesus christ that is lavyour of us all Amen. ❀ ¶ How Nychodemus and joseph told to pilate all that these two men had said/ & how pilate treated with the princes of the law. ANd when this serypture was written this Garins and Levicius rose up/ & so Gartus delivered the bill that he had written in to the hands of Annas & Cayphas & to Gamaliel. And Levicius gave that he had written in to the hands of Nychodemus and joseph of Barmathye/ and anon they were transfigured and was no more seen/ for both the bills were all one hand/ as though one man had written them both/ and there was not one letter more in that one than in that other. And when the Jews & masters of the laws had read these bills & understood them they were hugely abashed & ashamed And than they said among them that forsooth jesus was very gods lone/ blessed might he be endlessly for all thing beareth witness thereof. And anon after they went out of the lynagoge. And than Nychodemus & joseph of Barmathy told all this unto pilate and than pilate did write all that which was befallen of jesus/ and of that the jews had said of him. And all these marvels he did put in his books. After that pilate entered in to the jews/ and afore him assembled all the masters of the law/ as princes & byssoppes. And than pilate died command the gates and doors to be shut/ and than he said to them. Sirs it is done me to were that ye have among you a new story of great scripture the which scripture I covet for to see/ and therefore I charge you that it be brought in to my presence. And when it was brought to his presence/ than said he to them all. I conjure you all by the virtue of our lord which that is father and maker of all thing that ye ne hide no counsel but for to say the troth. Sirs ye know by the scriptures that is written here that jesus which that yecrucyfyed is very gods son/ & so it be hoveth him to come in to this world for the health of mankind. And therefore I charge you that ye tell me what time that christ should come by your lcrypture. When the Annas and Cayphas were thus conjured/ they charged & commanded that all should go out of the temple save pilate and them two. And than they said to pilate good judge thou hast so conjured us that we must needs show to the the troth of this that thou hast inquired of us. Sir unto the time that we had crucified jesus/ we know not that he was gods son/ but we wend that the virtues that he wrought had been done by some charm. Than made we us assemble in this temple/ & here we did reherle all the virtues that he had wrought. And so there were many of our lineage that said that they had seen jesus after his passion: and that they had heard him speak to his disciples/ & they said that they law him sty in to heaven/ and we law also two men that jesus raised fro death to life which told us many marvels that jesus died in his dying & after/ & that may ye were by three scriptures the we hold in our hands/ but our custom is such that we do worship to stories the have been here afore in our synagogues/ and so we find by witness of god in the first book as it saith the Myghell the archangel said to Seth that was the third son of Adam when .v. M. and .v. C. year were complete than should the son of god jesus christ come fro heaven/ & yet we abede his coming & peraventure this god of Isra hell that said to Moses that he should make a hutch of wydnes in the length of two cubytes and an half/ & in the length of a cubit and an half/ & these .v. cubytes we understand by the old testament that when. v M. and .v. C year is comen/ than shall jesucryst the son of god come in to the hutch/ that is the womb of the maiden mary Thus our scripture beareth witness of him that shall be the son of god/ & a king of the people of Israel/ but after the passion of jesus we & our princes marveled of the tokens & words that were done by him/ & so we looked our stories & counted all the lineage down to joseph's lineage/ & the lineage of Mary that was mother of jesus/ & so we have accounted that fro that time that god made the world and Adam the first man unto noah's flood is two. M. &. v C. year And fro the flood to Abraham is three. M. &. v. C. year/ and fro Moses to david is .v. C. year/ & fro the transmygracyon of babylon to the incarnation of jesus christ is four. C. year/ and thus is the account in all .v. M year. All these things & marvels did pilate write for to be red of all them the should come after. and than pilate wrote a letter to the city of Rome/ and to Claudio the Emperor. etc. ¶ Thus endeth Nychodemus gospel.
