I have not done this altogether by mine own observation, though I have travailed most part of the Kingdomâ–Ş And therefore have taken the benefit of the Maps of the same. And there may some errors arise, as ways lie curuing or direct, passable or not, and as Travellers are disposed to coast the Countries to make choice of their ways. Such as it is, I willingly recommend it to all that please to make use of it, as a labour intricate, and never before invented. The use of this Table. WHo so ever shall be disposed to make use of this Table, as desirous to know the distance between any two Cities or Towns contained in the same, let him seek the places desired in the upper and side Catalogues of Towns, and direct his eye from either place, between the lines, both from above and from the side, and where the lines meet in square, he shall find the number of miles: For example, if he would know how fare Lincoln is from Exeter, find Lincoln in the side, and carry your eye directly from thence between the lines until you come under Exeter, and where they meet in square he shall find 180. which is the distance of miles. If you find any Town on the side which will not meet in square from the desired Town above, then look for the Town which you find in the side, above: For Example, if you desire to know the distance between Gloucester and Oxford, if you look Gloucester in the side you cannot bring Oxford in a square with Gloucester, but if you look Gloucester in the side, and Oxford above, you shall find the square and the distance 37. miles, and so of any other. Entreating him friendly to censure any error in the calculation or impression, which cannot be but easily found, coming under the view of men all parts of the Kingdom, who are better acquainted with distances near their own abode, than any one man generally be. But howsoever he shall find the conceit useful and necessary, if he be occasioned to travel much. Invented and performed by JOHN NORDEN.
