Printed by B. ALSOP and T. FAUCET, for B. FISHER, dwelling at the sign of the Talbot in Aldersgate▪ street. 1631. TO THE UNKNOWN PATRON. THis work I did intend to Mercury, Before his wings were sick, and he could fly: But now the Gods incensed, all together Have laid diseases upon every feather: (Alas) he cannot raise himself nor carry His plumes, as does the rest of all the Airy: But is retired to some shady Grove, To hide him from the great incensed jove. And where to find my Patron to deliver This little work of mine; I know not, neither If he were found (and no discretion lost) This title might offend him, or me most. Now all ye Gods bear witness, I intent Only to show a bounded thankful mind Unto this Mercury, by whose quick fire My Muse being lately wounded did respire. And whether sin of these two be the less? A fear in Conscience, or unthankfulness,) Judge Heavens; And vouchsafe me only this, What's well intended be not taken amiss. And now go on my Book, and seek about, Till thou hast found this unknown Patron out: And tell him thou cam'st from an unknown friend, Whose Love's a Circle, round, without an end. Ante leves ergo, etc. TO THE SAME PATRON, THE GREAT MASTER of this MYSTERY. (☜ ☞) Our Author payeth this, In part of a more sum due. To the Reader. IT may be objected unto me, that the collation of these things, is not all made up and digested into this fabric of mine own materials and structure, and I do ingeniously confess it: Seeing the four Treasuries were collected by M. Agard, his private notes, a man very industrious and painful in that kind; and one, who had continual recourse unto the most, and custody of many of the rest of the same: And the latter Calendar of the Records of the Tower, came to my hands from an Author unknown, even as the printer was drawing the last sheet of the precedent work from the press, I was content to give it wharsage, and to let it be laid on shore with the rest, but very unwillingly; because, I had no convenieut room left where to dispose it, without blaming of my Method, in that it was not said in his proper place, with the rest that is under the Title of the Tower, in the first Station: whereof I hope an equal censure, ever resting. And so much shall suffice for the four Treasuries. THE REMEMBRANCERS FOLLOW. The Remembrancers are two: Viz. The Kings, and The Lord Treasurers. NOw what Records are appropriated to either Remembrancer, concerning the businesses of their Offices respectively, appears by an especial order made for the purpose, by Sir Richard Lyster Knight, Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer: Dated in july, in the five and twentyeth year of the reign of King HENRY the eighth, which remains with the King's Remembrancer. And most of the businesses of the Remembrancers, are taken out of an Original or Extract, which the Chancery transmitteth yearly into the Exchequer, to collect and recover thereout, and thereby, any thing that is reserved or due to the Crown, whether it be Rend Service, Account, or whatsoever else; whereby any profit may arise to the Crown, either casually, or certainly. By which original, grows that great correspondency, which is between the Exchequer, and the Chancery. Now besides the businesses and Records which Sir Richard Lyster assigned and set forth out of the said Original, as proper to the King's Remembrancer: here is, In the Chest at Westminster, in the Office of this Remembrancer, as appears by the Catalogue thereof, in November 1616. The Lord Treasurer's Remembrancer. THe Lord Treasurer's Remembrancer, hath the keeping of the Extract or Original of Chancery, before mentioned: together, with the propriety of keeping and entering such things, as Sir Richard Lyster hath set forth for him. For which, I refer you to the Order itself, being with the King's Remembrancer: as I refer you to the Original itself here, to find the whole content thereof. FIrst, it is needful for them to have a reasonable good knowledge, in the Latin and French tongues, for Latin, to understand, read, and examine the Tailles, which they must do publicly; Also, to understand the Records, and to know the diversity of their natures: For the French, to tell the numbers in examining the Tailles, and especially, to understand the Records, whereof sundry both of State and otherwise, are in French, and especially, in Monster le Droits, and Treatyes between Prince and Prince. After the Tailles be examined, the charge of the Foils is only in the Chamberlains, to deliver them safe over to the other two Deputyes on the Chequer side, to join the same. In searching the Book of Domesdei, is to be avoided, laying bare hands or moisture, upon the writing thereof, and blotting. In copying of Notes, out of the same Book of Domesdei, you must write it as near as you can, to the Letter thereof, observing both the great Letters, and the points therein, which are pricks with a Pen: thus, 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 For Yorkshire, you have a Calendar only, which, if you observe the manner of it, will marvelously ready the Searcher, for thereby you shall find a Town sooner, and the places wherein the book doth mention the same. There is a book of Domesdei, made by Master Arthur Agard, the late Officer there, remaining in the Treasury, which if you peruse, it will ready the Searcher much, both for the reading, and for the somewhat better understanding thereof. There is a book, abbreviated of the bag of Parliament Rolls, of EDWARD the firsts time, which is yet amongst Placita Foreste, in the bag entitled; De diversis Forestis, they are very stately Records, Ideo quere. There is also abridged some other Records, of Placitam ooram Domino Rege & de banco, for Richard the first, King john, Henry the third, Edward the first, Edward the second, Edward the third, Richard the second, Henry the fourth, & also all Henry the fifth's time: Which Books and Records, ought neither to be given or lent away to any, lest they return not again, whereby they may turn to the Glory of GOD, the service of our Sovereign Prince, and the good of the Subject, and the better readiness of them that shall succeed in the place, to whom is wished increase of knowledge.
