¶ The Sum of the acts & decrees made by divers bishops of Rome. IN this little Treatyle here following thou mayst behold most Christian rea●r (as in a glass most clear and bright) the very vysnomy, Image, Figure, Shape, and fashion, of our popish popettes which hath named themself Popes (which the truth to say are bishops of Rome) how & in what thing their great labours and pains consisteth Only in making of laws to stabilyshe their own authorities, And in setting up long matins and Masses, with Diriges & other patrynges, That at no time there should be any place given that God's word should be preached to the comfort of them that are dearly bought with the blood of our merciful saviour Christ. These are the misty angels of Satan (that Paul warneth us of (which transfigureth themselves in to the similitude & Image of the angels of light. ¶ Here in mayst thou also behold now that all Ceremonies that at this day is used in the church, Are the Institutions and ordinances of Men, and therefore not to be esteemed of no such valour, that Gods word should give place to let these dom paterynges be ministered. But that all these aught to give place and clearly to be put away, when gods word cometh to be lively and clearly preached, which the Lord of Glory grant to be, Amen ¶ In the year of our lord god. C.x EVaristus Bishop of Rome ordained that if a Bishop were accused by the comen people, it should not be received. ¶ Item that a Bishop when he preacheth, should have viii Deacons to weight upon him. ¶ In the year of our Lord god. C.xix. ¶ Alexander bishop of Rome ordained that they should be accursed that did let any that were sent from the See apostolical ¶ And that a lay man should not sew none of the clergy at the temporal law upon pain of excommunication. ☞ Item that ones a day the Pressed should sacrifice the body of Christ. etc. ¶ Item he added to the Sacrifice and memory, of the passion of Christ (Qui pridie ꝙ paterecur. etc.) to be said unto these words (This is my body. etc.) ¶ Item he ordained that water should be mingled with the wine, & that it should be unlevioned breed that was occupied in the oblation & not levende bred as was afore. Also he ordained holy water to be made to fere devils a way with al. ¶ In the year of our lord. C.xxix. ¶ Syxtus bishop of Rome, ordained that no profane creature or lay man should lay hands on holy things. ¶ Also that the corporas cloth should be of fine lynyn. ¶ And that the Mass should be celebrated upon the altar, & that in it should be said thrice Sanctus. ☞ In the year of our lord. C.xxxix. ☞ Tellesphorus bishop of Rome, ordained the xl Days afore Ester called lent to be fasted. Also that a Priest upon Cristmas day might consecrated thrice, or thry masses. Also that Gloria in exelsis should be song in the mass. ¶ In the year of our lord. C.xl ¶ Higinius Bishop of Rome ordained that Solemn churches should be hallowed without sacrifice or without a mass. And that the material things of the church should not be turned in Prophayne uses. And that a infant shule be presented at baptism or confirmation, or Bishoping be one man or one woman. ☞ In the year of our lord. C.xliiii. ☞ Pius Bishop of Rome Ordained Easter day to be celebrated upon the sunday. Also the pain that priests should have if they neglected or let pass any part of the Celebration. Also that none should swear neither by the here nor head of god. Also maidens before. xxv. year of age & after the xii day should not be consecrated into religion. ¶ And that is sacrilege rashly to cause the profits of the church to be minished nor the religious men to be put out of favour. ¶ In the year of our lord. C.lxvi. ¶ Sater bishop of Rome ordained the a priest should not say mass or sacrifice except two. Folks at the least were present. And that nuns should not coach the corporas cloth the chalice nor the kyvering of the chalice. And that nuns shall not Sacrifice in the time of service. Item that a blessing Pressed be present, at the time of matrimony, Item that a maid be given to her husband solempni of her father or mother or other friends. Item that a unlawful oath is to be broken. Item the upon Mawndy, thuesday men should receive the sacrament. ¶ In the year of our lord. C. lxivii. ¶ Eleuterius bishop of Rome ordained that no meat should be forsaken thorown a superstitious name. That no man should be purdowne from their, dignity. But if they be first accused and then convicted. He that is guilty & absent shall not be condemned though his acccusor call upon him. Under this bishop the britains received the faith of Christ. ¶ In the year of our lord. C. lxxxxii. ¶ Victor bishop of Rome ordained that Ester day should be Celebrate on the sunday after the xiiii day of the moan of the i month. Also that every man of necessity required might be baptized when he please. And that those that would not be reconciled from their old malice, they should be excommunicate from the service of god. ¶ In the year of our lord. CC.iii. ¶ Severinus ordained that the sacrament should be consecrated in a chalice of Glass & not of tree, as afore. ☞ Also that Christian people should rescyve the sacrament on Ester day at the laest. And that priests should be with the Bishop when he saith mass ☞ In the year of our lord. Cc.xii ☞ Calixtus ordained, that the ymbring days should be fasted that wheat, wine & oil might be increase. ☞ And that those which should take orders should abstain from wives for ever, Item that a bishop should not be consecrated but if he were lawfully chose. That priests should not be accused by defamed persons. That accusers of clarks, if they be suspect enemies, they shall not be admitted in the court or law. ☞ Also that the hurters of pilgrims should be accursed. ☞ In the year of our lord. Cc.lii ☞ Fabian ordained the holy oil should be revived every year. And that the old should be brent on maundy thursday. That christian people should receive the sacrament thrice a year. Also that no man should look to the priests living but should hearken to his doctrine & those things that he mynystrythe. In that clerks that are guilt should be punished by the law of the church. Item that those that reproveth wrongfully and clerk, should be a cursed. That no man should take a wife within .v. degree of blood. ☞ In the year of our lord. Cc.lu ☞ Cornelius ordained that no man should constrain a pressed to swear but in a matter Of the faith. That those which are put unto their others, by the order of the law should be fasting. ☞ In the year of our lord. CC.lxi. ☞ Stephanus ordained the clerks should not were the vestamentes of the church but in the ministration of holy things. Item those that take away the goods of the church shallbe condemned as menslayers. Those that have left the faith, and are penitent shall not be baptized again. ☞ In the year of our lord. CC.lxiiii. ☞ Sixtus ordained that a priest should sacrifyse upon a hallowed altar & he gave unto saint Laurence the treasure of the church to distribute. In the year of our lord. CC.lxxiii. Helix ordained holy days yearly in remembrance of martyrs. He renewed consecrations & hallowings of churches that priests should not say mass but in holy place only. In the year of our lord. CC.lxxvii. EVticianus ordained that those that geld themselves, & those that are buggers & abbates that presume to defile virgins should be excommunicate. That new fruits should be blessed upon the altar Iten that a martyr should be buried in a cope. In the year of our lord. CC.lxxxv. Catus ordained that they should ascend by seven. distynet orders to be a bishop. Iten that no lay man neither heretics nor unbaptised man shall call a clarck to the law. In the year of our lord. CC. lxxxxvii. Marcellinus for fear of pain committed idolatry & afterward did penance and the time there was xvii. M. i.xxx. days martyred by dioclesian the Emperor. ☞ In the year of our lord. Ccc.vi Marcellus was the first that gave titles to parishes and dyoces in Rome. In the year of our lord. CCC.xi. Eusebius ardeyned that those that taketh away any thing prayning to the church shall restore ten times asmuch again, Iten that priests should not be accused but of men of great gravity. The workers of witchcraft & defamed persons shall not be received as witnesses. Also a woman that is spoused to her husband may depart from him & go into Religion. In the year of our lord. CCC.xiii. Melacides the last martyr from Peter ordained that no man should fast on sunday or thursday. That no man should be condemned of suspicion before the deed be proved. That a clarck should abstain from secular business. In the year of our lord. CCC.xvii. Sylvester Ordained that the holy oil should be consecrated by a bishop. And the children being baptized should be confirmed by a bishop. Item that priests should anoint sick folkis. Item that wednesday friday and saturday should be fasted. Item that priests may not be called of a lay man into no law. Item that a priest should not be aturne in the temporal law. Iten that priests should were no silk in clothꝭ. Iten that he shall have no died corporas cloth. Also he was the first that caused a deacon to put a cope on him in time of mass and a fanon on his left hand ¶ In the year of our lord. CCC.xxxviii. ☞ Marcus ordained that the creed should be long a fit after the gospel. That a clerk should not be brought to the temporal law. ¶ In the year of our lord. CCC.lxxiii. ¶ Damasus ordained that the confite or should be said at the beginnyng of the mass. Also he caused first the division of the quere the one should sing on verse on the one side and the other on the other side. And that gloria patti should be song at the end of every psalm. Also that no man marrying a widow should not be pressed. ¶ In the year of our lord. CCCC. v. ¶ Anastasius, ordained that men should stand up at the reading of the gospel & here it in remembrance. Item that those that lacked any of their members, or partis of their bodies should not be made prystꝭ. Also he ordained first the Order of saint Hierome. ¶ In the year of our lord iiii. C.viii Innocentius ordained the Saturdays should be fasted. A church once hallowed should not be hallowed again. Item that a statute made of the clergy without the consent of the bishop should be as void. Item that it shallbe counted simony to them that sold Prebends, dignities or of holy Oil. Iten on Solemn feasts those that are Christian people should afore that they receive the sacrament give each other a kiss of peace. In the year of our lord four C.xxiiii. Sozinus ordained that the paschal taper should be hallowed in every parish on Ester even. Item that clerks should not drink in taverns. Item that prentyses should not take orders. In the year of our lord four C.xxxiii. Bonefacius ordained that no man should be made a pressed before xxx year & that the servant that ran away from his master should not be received to a priest. In the year of our lord four C.xliii. Leo ordained that in baptism and confirmation we should have one god father Item that in septuagesime & quadragesyme and advente, Alleluya should not be song nor gloria in excelsis. He ordained hanc igitur to be said, in the canon of the mass Item that a Bishop of Vian called Mamarcus instituted the Latony to be song. In the year of our lord four C.lxiii. Hilarius ordained that bishops should not choose them successors This bishop gathered all the decrees of his predecssors into one book & published them to all the world. In the year of our lord .v. C.xxv. john the i ordained that the Emperors should be subjects unto the bishops & not to bear rule over them. In that time the holiness of Bn̄d●e was in the exstemation which ordained the Relion of monks. Which thenceforth was divided in many households. In the year of our lord .v. C.xxxii. Bonyface the ii ordained that the lay people should here their divine service in a several place from the clergy. ¶ In the year of our lord .v. C.lvi ☞ Pelagius i ordained that priests should say their canonical hours daily. And that in the time of lent they should not celebrate before they had said the last hour. And that theridamas shall not be admitted in the spiritual court no libel of accusation on less the party accused be present. Also that seismatykes & heretics should be oppressed with the secular power. ¶ In the year of our lord .v. C.xCii. ¶ Gregory the great wrote first himself in his letter in these words servus seruerum that is the servant of all servants. In the synod of the xxiiii fathers he confirmed openly four general councellꝭ. He brought into the church ornaments & singing. He ordained that the mass should begin with a verse of the spalter. And that kyrieleyson should be repeated ix times. He ordained Alleluya to be said also the offertory he ordained & in the canon of the mass to be said. And that the last will of them that died should be kept & ratified. And that the four days before the first sunday intent should be fasted, Also that men married to two. wives & usurers should not be admitted to be priests. Iten that men leaving their wiuꝭ with consent that their wives ought them to enter into religion, And also women leaving their husband with consent their husbandꝭ ought also to enter into religion. Also that their shall not be two. metropolitans in one province, This man commandeth to preachers that they should use discretion both in speaking & in keeping of silens. ¶ And he belded vi monasteries our of the ground of his own cost And he maid his own house a Religious house And like him shall ye skan● find any. ✚ ¶ In the year of our lord vi C.u. Sabinus ordained that the hours of the day should be made known unto the church by the distinction of the ringing of bellꝭ And that thee should lamps continually burn in the church. ☞ In the year of our lord vi C.vii Boniface the iii ordained that the corporas cloth at the consecration should belayed abroad by the priest & that none should be elected in the place of the deed bishop, But the iii day after his death, And that neither for favour nor for no money. And that the election should be made both of the clergy & lay people, and that it should be ratified by chassent of the bishop. This man by the consent of Focas obtained against the patriarch of constantinople That the see of Peter should be the heed of the church. ¶ In the year of our Lord vi C.viii Boniface the four he dedicated the tempyl of Gybel & of the gentiles unto our lady & all saints. ¶ He made his father's house a monastery, and the lands of his ancestry he gave unto the use of the Monks. And than gave unto them authority to preach, to baptize and to absolve. ¶ In the year of our Lord vi C.xv. Honorius the i ordained that the names of the excomunicat should be openly denounsed, this man did restore many churchis & church yards. And he appointed laws to the saracens. ¶ In the year of our lord vi C.xxxviii. Iohn the four ordained that any invaded or took away the gods of the church He should restore four fold. ☞ In the year of our lord vi C.xl Theodorus Ordained the hallowing of wax as Sozinus writyth of him, & builded up ii Cells in Rome. ¶ In the year of our lord vi C.xlvi. Martyne the i ordained that they should not have no long here. And that the man & his wife should be blessed before they lay together. And that the bishop every year should make cream & send it to every parish of the diocꝭ. ☞ In the year of our lord vi C.liii Egenius the ii ordained that the Bishop should have prisons, to punish the of fenders of the Clarge. Also that the priests houses should be builded near the church. ¶ In the year of our lord vi C.lvi Vitilianus made the order of the churches He ordained song & added to the organs. ¶ In the year of our lord vi C.lxv. Theodarus the ii builded churches. He ordained many suffrages to put away many wonders that happened in those days. ☞ In the year of our lord vi C.lxxi. Donus the i ordained the clergy into diverse degrees. He made the church of Ravenna to be obedient unto the church of Rome. ☞ In the year of our lord vi C.lxxx. Agatho in counsel of ii C.lxxxix. byshopꝭ unied & accorded the latins & the greeks in the Ecclesiastical Ceremoniꝭ & manner of sacrifices. He condemned for an he re●ke Marcharius the bishop of Antioch This was the vi general counsel. ☞ In the year of our lord vi C.lxxxiiii. Leo the ii ordained baptism to be done in urgent necessity. He ordained the Pax to be borne about to the people being present a Mass. Also that the election of the clergy of Ravenna which made himself Equal with Rome should not be in strength but if the bishop of Rome, did a prove in This man ordained the psalmody, and he brought the hymmꝭ into aswere tewne. ☞ In the year of our lord vi C.lxxxv. benedict the ii a man of most high holiness, whose holiness moved constantine to make him to be the very vyear of Christ in earth, whom the clergy & the people of Rome did make bishop, by the authority of the common hawse without any confirmation of the prince. ☞ In the year our Lord. vi. C.lxxxvi. Iohn the .v. was consecrated of iii bishops & so made a decree that the same manner of consecration should be observed of his successors. ☞ In the year of our lord vi C.lxxxviii. Sergius the i ordained Agnus dei to be said of the pressed in the Mass before the breaking of the host, which peeꝭ of the host He declared the signification in a certain canon. Steven the iii ordained that no man should be made a bishop except he were within orders before. Vrban the second ordained that Clerks should say our Lady matins every day and that her service should be on the Saturday and that no priests son should have no office in the church. ¶ In the year of our lord. M.c.xcix. Innocentius the third ordained that they that take their rights should be confessed, every year once at the lest at Ester ¶ In the year of our lord. M.cc.xvi Honorius the third did confirm the orders of Dominike and Fransis. ¶ In the year of our Lord. M.cc.xxvii. Gregory the ix made Dominike & Francis & one of his kinsmen Antony & Elizabeth saints, He set fourth also the Decritalles compiled by one Raimundus. ¶ In the year of our lord. M. iiC.xliii. Innocencius the fourth ordained that the nativity of our lady should be kept. viii. days, and that cardinals when they ride on horseback should were a red hat. He gave religious men privileges and wrote the rule of saint Clare. ¶ In the year of our lord. M. iiC.lvi. Alexander the fourth Ordained that secular power to require of no church neither of man of the church any tasks or dame, and that lay men should not dispute of faith. And that clerks should have wives, and they to kept their gowns and heads to be shaven as was before, and they to have all privileges as they hath before, and he made all the clergy free from all manner of Exactyons of the temporalty.
