¶ A little treatise against seditious persons. ¶ To troll away or troll in/ let not troll spare If troll truly troll/ troll needeth not to care. OF late I perused/ two purposes several In their kinds clerkly handled/ the truth for to tell Trolle away and Trolle in/ men do them call Treating upon matter/ concerning the late Crumwell The one utterly minding/ the other to repel Trolle away (the troth is) much touched the quick And Trolle in (somewhat galled) began for to kick. ¶ yet Trolle away told troth/ it can not be denied Declaring the offence/ wherein Crumwell offended Trolle in being troubled/ when he it espied With trollings to cover it/ full subtly contended Some trollers there be/ I would were amended For who that craftily covereth/ any others offence Of likelihood/ in his own heart/ hath the same pretence. ☞ Truly to troll/ it is no manner of shame And trolling untrue/ is not to be maintained As every thing is/ so to give it proper name amongs all true honest men/ should not be disdained The scripture so teacheth us/ it can not be feigned Against scripture who striveth/ he is none other like Than a traitor to his prince/ and to god an heretic, We qui dicitis bonum malum et malum bonum. Esa. quinto. ❧ I intend not to troll/ to take any part division to increase/ it needeth nothing But sorrowfully sighing/ I troll in my heart With myself in mind/ many times revolving How god to us/ hath ordained the most noble king Who uniformly to knit us/ hath travailed full sore Yet many trifling trollers/ care little therefore. ¶ But as trollers troublous and full of envy At the laws of god/ and of our good king In their trollings do trust/ yet that their old heresy All good ordries set a part/ shall flourish and spring Their preachers/ no less comfort/ in their sermons do bring Even lately exhorting them/ avoiding all dread And persecution not regarding/ thoroughly to proceed. ¶ With many words more troublous/ than now I will rehearse Not doubting at all/ but at length they shallbe known Such trolling treacherous/ my heart doth sore pierce considering how sedicyously/ amongs us they besowen Of late I well trusted/ they had been over blown But now I well perceive/ that neither favour nor smart From the body can expel/ that is rooted in the heart. ¶ A true trolling heart/ would be loath to pretend Any purpose to maintain/ against god or his king The confession of an heretic/ that lately did offend And amongs others/ suffered for his deserving Secretly they embrace/ as a most precious thing And yet plainly will I prove/ by good law and reason Contained therein/ both heresy and treason. ❧ In any wise imprinted/ they will not it shall be The dangers thereof in themselves mistrusting Wherefore every man may well perceive and see What hearts they do bear to god and our good king Every of them secretly must have it in writing But Chryst sayeth verily there is ndthing concealed But at length shallbe known/ and openly revealed. Nihil est opertum quoq non reveletur. neque occultum ꝙ non sciatur. Math, x, ¶ Who against them trolleth/ a papist they him name They have no other thing/ themselves for to defend I would that all papists/ had an open shame And that all heretics/ themselves would amend Than should we have no cause/ further to contend But uniformly to live/ the one with the other And joyfully to enhabyt/ as brother with brother. Ecce quam bonum et quam iocūdum habitare fratres in unum. psa, c, xxxij ☞ Such should be our trollings/ Christ us so teacheth Commanding ever peace/ amongs us for to be Mathei. x. Luce. ij. Io, xiv. xv, Untruly he trolleth/ that otherwise preacheth stirring to any sedition/ malice or envy Where banished is discord/ and reigneth all charity That realm in god resteth/ and god is in it/ Being charity himself/ as saith the holy writ. Deus charitas est & qui manet in caritate in deo manet et deus in eo i. joha. iij. ☞ Than towards that charity/ troll we on a pace Advancing ourselves/ with all convenient speed Amore acceptable pilgrimage/ surely never was For which god gave to man/ any merit or meed Our labour or great burden/ let us nothing dread Nor regarding the wilfulness/ of our body or flesh For at the journeys end/ Christ will us refresh. Venite ad me oens qui laboratis & onorati estis, et ego reficiam vos Mathei. xv ❧ And than as true trollers/ together let us remain perfectly fast knit/ in one peace/ unite and love With glory unto god/ evermore glad and fain Our noble Prince truly to serve/ as doth us behove omnis anima po sub. subdita sit. ro, 13. And all others to tender/ as duty doth us move Using still among us/ the selfsame love and concord Which is to us commanded/ by Christ the eternal lord. Hoc est mandatum meum ut diligatis invicem sicut joh. xv. ❧ And now in that love/ let us all with one voice pray For the preservation of Henry our most noble king And Katherine our Queen/ that they together may Prosperously continue/ to their hearts desiring And Edward our Prince/ that most angelic thing That they all together may long live and rest And after with him to reign/ qui in celis est. God save the King. To Trolle away or Trolle in/ let not Trolle spare If Trolle truly Trolle/ Trolle needeth not to care. ❧ Composed by Thomas Smyth/ servant to the kings royal majesty. And clerk of the queens graces counsel/ though most unworthy, FINIS.
