¶ A declaration of the ceremonies annexed, to the Sacrament of baptism, what they sygnyffie and how we ought to understand them (:) 1537. When a christian man's child is born into this world it is brought to church and iii witnesses cometh with, him that is God father and godmother and when they be a greed what name shallbe to the child, than the priest maketh a sign of the cross in the forehead of the child & saith thus. A token of the holy cross of our lord. jesus christ I set in thy forehead and so at the breast in lyk manner, & than the priest saith many orisons over the child commanding the devil to knolech his sentence and give worship to the living god and true and to jesus christ and to the holy ghost and depart from this servant of god & than he putteth salt in to the mouth of the child & saith thus ●a●●. Thou salt of wisdom that god be merciful to the in to everlasting life. Amen. This salt of wisdom understand god word which should be learned in the mouth of the child when it beginneth to speak as the apostle saith be our word savord with salt evermore in grace than the priest weetyth his thumb in spit and toucheth the chyldꝭ ear & saith. Be thou opened that is understand in all thy five wits to here & speak the word of god with love & dread and holy devotion. For the judgement of god shall touch in which we should yield account of every idle word also the priest toucheth the nostrils of the child for it should smylle the odour of sweetness of heavenly things, more than every ertly things. soon after this the priest biddeth all the people that theridamas be, to say a. Pater noster and an. ave and a. Credo byseking god that the child may rightfully take his christendom, & well keep it to the ending of his life. And than the priest taketh the child by the right hand and calleth his name and saith come thou in to the temple of god that thou may have everlasting life and live in to world of worldis. Amen. than the child is brought to the font and the priest calleth it by name and saith. Abranuucio satane & omnibus operibus eius et omnibus pompis eius that is. I for sake satanas that is the devil and all his works & all his pompis or pride's and the godsibbiss saith. Abranuncio that is I for sake Therefore where he is not a falls christian man that keepeth not the covenant of these words but after ward wrappyth him in the fendis pride in heart and in clothing and in wicked worcking for if this covenant should be truly kept, all the tokens of pride in man must be done a way seeing each token of pride, is a pomp of the fiend. After saith the priest to the child by leavest thou in god the father almyhgty maker of heaven and earth The child is dumb and may not speak but and it were of age and might speak it should answer for itself therefore the godsibbiss answer seeing. Credo. that I believe. Eft axeth the priest, & believest thou in jesus christ his only son our lord born and suffered & they say I believe. The thrid time ar the priest. And believest thou in the holy ghost in holy church faith in communion of saints for gevenes of sins the rising of flesh and after the ever lasting life. And they say I believe than saith the priest. Quid petis what axist thou they say baptim would thou be baptized seth the priest and they say, Volo I will than the priest taketh the child and saith. I baptize the in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost Amen. And so he plungyth it in the water and commandeth the gossipis to lay hand on the child's heed for they been witnesses of his baptism & receive the charge to teach it and the truth of his believe that is the commandments & the domes of god, and to flee the pompis and pride's of the fend, for the comen people & all men should know and keep the commandments of god. And prestis his holy counsels. And Lordis his just domes, and if they do not this: they be wrongfully called christian men. And thus blind priests bear false witnesses of young children christened, that after ward serve the devil whom they for look saying Abronuncio After these things the priest a noyntyth the child with oil and lapped in his crisome & taketh it a candele brenning in his hand, and saith. Accipe lampadem ardentem irriprehensibilem custodi Baptysmum tuum serva mandata ut cunvenit dominus ad nuptias possis occurrere ei una cum sanctis in aula celestis ut habeas vitam eternam et vivas in secula seculorum. Amen. That is to say. Have thou a brenning lamp unreprovable. Keep thou thy baptism & keep thou the commandments that when the Lord cometh to the weddyngiss thou mayst run against him as one with saints in the heavenly hall that thou have ever lasting life and live in to the world of worldis. an Here endeth the reulies of baptim. But all christian folk should busily learn to know the greatness of charge which they receive in their baptism. For with four things we be charged in our Baptim all though blind priests know it not, when they give to us iiii. Elamentis in tokening of them, that is salt, & water, and oil, & fire. The first charge is that we take salt of wisdom of god word and rule our life there after and salt our souls that they stink not in sin. For and this heavenly salt fail fro men they should be cast out as christ teacheth in the gospel. The ii charge is, that our eeris be opened ever more ready to here Christ's gospel and understand it. For christ saith. He that hath ears of hearing, Let him here & he that redyth let him understand. The three charge is this that we keep our baptism that is the covenant of our baptism and true believe in the father and the son and the holy ghost as the priest apposith us when we say. Credo. The four charge is this that we keep the commaundementis of god, as the priest commandeth us at the font putting a candle brenning in our hand, for as a candille brenning is wasted by fire: so sins in our soul should be wasted and destroyed with keeping of the commaundementis of god, having devout love to him and to our even christian. And this is the second baptism, that saint john. techyth when he saith I baptize in water but another shall come after me strongir than I and he shall baptize you in the holy ghost and fire and with out this second. Baptym may no man be saved, as christ saide to Nichodeme truly I say to thee: But a man be born a gen of water and of the holy ghost he may not enter in to the kingdom of god. Also Paul teacheth that the first baptism in water only, maketh us not saef, But the asking of a good conscience in god & faith not feigned the believe that worckyth by charity for christ saith. He that believeth in me flodis of quick water should flow fro his womb that is the holy ghost that christ calleth the comforter, which floweth ever in to the hearts of meek men that make them ready to die, for that man that shall dwell by fore the blessed face of god in heaven, shall receive the earnest of the holy ghost here in earth. And this is the second baptism that fleshly priests and swinish people knoweth not, for there hearts be stopped with fleshly lust, that the flodis of the holy ghost may not enter in to them, and therefore priests be in peril that teach not the second Baptym. For it sufficyth not to salvation of man to wayshe his body in water of baptism and suffer his soul to stink in sin thorough breaking of the commandments of god, for thus priests read in the holy Psalm. Increpasti superbos maledicti qui declinant a mandatis tuis, That is to say thou blamest the proud they be a cursed that bow a weigh fro thine hestis. And thus god shall blame proud priests for they pursue power men for the learning of the commaundementis the which they charge them to keep in the our of ther. baptism and all that bear the name of christian men should cry against this error For what error is more vile in the sight of god than to byende men to alawe and afterward pursue them for the same law and thus for dread of evil priests men dare not keep chrystis heestis and the ghostly birth of our mother holy church is despised of proud men that know not the bond of their baptism. Amen. FINIS.
