¶ The proclamation / made and 〈◇〉 〈◇〉 〈◇〉 kings highness our sovereign lord and his most honourable counsel / not onely 〈◇〉 〈◇〉 〈◇〉 exercising of long bows and maintayninge of archery / within this his realm / but also for putting down and distroyeng of crossbows & hand Gonnes / and other unlawful games / used within this his said realm / contrary to his laws and laudable statutes in that behalf made / ordained and provided. THe king our sovereign lord / of his high prudence and wisdom. considering / howe that as well in the times of his noble progenitors / kings of this his realm of england / as also in the time of his most noble reign / by the exercising and using of his and their subiectes in shooting in long bows / there did insurge / increase and grow within the same realm / great nombre and multitude of frank Archers / which not onely thereby defended this his said realm and subiectes therof / against the malice and dangers of their enemies / but also with a mean & small nombre and puissance / in regard and comparison of their enemies / hath done many notable exploits and acts of war / to the discomfiture of their said enemies. By reason whereof / as well our said souer●ygne lord the king / as also his noble progenitors / haue had and obtained great and triumphant victories / against their enemies / to the great honour / famed / renown / and surety of his and their noble {per}sons / and of this his said realm of england / and subiectes of the same / as also to the terrible fear and dread of all outward and strange nations / attemptyng any thing by the way of hostilyte / to the hurt or danger of this his said realm. In consideracyon whereof / and for the better maynteynaunce and good continuance of the said archery and shotynge in long bows / dyvers good and politic statutes haue ben made / established & devised / as well in the time of our sovereign lord the king that now is / as also in the dayes of his said noble progenitors kings of this realm. yet that not withstanding / for lack of good and effectuell execution of the said laws and statutes / the said archery and shotynge in long bows / is sore and marueyloussy decayed / and in maner utterly extyncte: And specially by the newefanglenesse and wanton pleasure that men now haue / in using of crossbows & hand Gonnes / whereby also great nombre of people be given to idleness / & to the unlawful destruction of dere / and other breasts and fowls / within warrens / forrestes / chases and parks / to the great loss and detriment / as well of the king our sovereign lord / as also of other his noble men and subiectes. And it is thought by the kings highness and his most honourable counsel / that the archery and shooting in long bows / is like for evermore to be decayed & destroyed by the using hereof / and of dyvers and many other unlawful games / as playing at gins / Boules / Closshe / Tables / dice / cards / and other unlawful games / contrary to the kings laws and honourable statutes made in that behalf. ¶ For the remedyeng and eschewing whereof / and for setting up again of long bows / and auaunsyng and increasing of the said archery. The king our sovereign lord / straightly chargeth and commandeth / that no maner of person or persons from henceforth / after this present proclamation and publycacion therof had and made / shote in or use any crossbow or hand gone / nor haue / bear / or keep any crossbow or hand gone in their houses or any other places / contrary and against the said statutes. ¶ And furthermore our said sovereign lord / willeth / chargeth / and straightly commandeth / that all and every person and persons / of what degree or condition he or they be / that shall se / perceive or know / any {per}sone or {per}sons shooting in any crossbow or hand gone / or haue or bear any crossbow or handgon / contrary to the said statutes / as is beforesaid. That than it shalbe lawful for such person or {per}sons to take and seize / or cause to be taken & seized the said crossbow and handgon / crossbows or hand Gonnes from the said {per}son or persons / shooting / using / bearing / having or keeping the same. And the same so taken or seized / to break in pieces in the next market town or other town / in the presence of the governor or gouernours of the same / or in their absence / in the presence of their deputy or deputies there. And in case the said person or {per}sons do refuse to deliver the said crossbows or handgonnes / to such {per}son or {per}sons as shall attempte to seize or demand the said crossbows or hand Gonnes: than and in that case / the kings pleasure and commandment is / that his good & loving subiectes being nere there unto( being also required and desired) shall assist from time to time / the same person or persons so intending to seize and take the said crossbows and hand Gonnes / in the taking / seasyng / and breaking the same. And furthermore our said sovereign lord the king / chargeth and straightly commandeth / that if any person or {per}sons shall know or probably suppose / any crossbow or hand gone to be kept in the house of any person or persons / contrary to the tenor / form and effect of the said statutes: that than it shalbe lawful to the said person or persons / knowing or probably supposing the same to be true / to entre in to the said house or houses / where any such crossbows / hand gone or hand Gonnes shal be kept / commanding the said householder / or other person or persons there than being / in the absence of the said householder / in the kings name / that he or they / without any contradyction / denial or refusal / incontinently and without delay / deliver the said crossbow or hand gone / crossbows or hand Gonnes / being in the said house to the {per}sone or persons so demaundyng the same. And if the said householder / or such persons as in his absence shall than be there / deny and refuse so to do / than and in that case the same person so demaundyng the same crossbow or hand gone / crossbows or hand Gonnes shall resort to the kings true and loving subiectes / nere thereunto dwelling or being / charging them in the kings name to go with him to the same house / for his better aid & assistance / in executing this the kings high commandment / for great and urgent causes moving his highnesse and counsel / concerning the surety of his most royal person and realm / and to charge & command the said householder / or such as in his absence shalbe than in the same / to make delivery of the said crossbow or crossbows / handgon or hand Gonnes / under pain of death / suffering the same to be broken in pieces / according as is above rehearsed. ¶ And over this our said sovereign lord the king / chargeth and commandeth that no maner of person / of what degree or condition he be / from henceforth / after this present proclamation & publycacion therof had and made / shall make any crossbow within this realm of england / except it be to and for such person or persons / as may lawfully therein shote / and use the same. And also in case any person or persons shall here after make the said crossbows / the kings pleasure is / that the same makers of crossbows shal be first bound by his and their obligations to the kings use / to the governor or ruler of such places where they shall than dwell / in such sums as shal be thought by the same rulers and gouernours convenient / vpon condition that they shall not make any crossbow or crossbows / but for such persons as may lawfully use the same. And furthermore / our sovereign lord the king / chargeth and commandeth that no maner of person or persons / shall bring into this his realm / any crossbows or hand Gonnes: but onely for and to the use of our said sovereign lord / and such other as may lawfully use the same / vpon pain of the kings high indygnacion and imprisonment / there to remain without bail or mayneprise / till his gracious pleasure be further known in that behalf. And also his highness chargeth and commandeth / that no person( not lawfully authorised to haue and use crossbows) presume to bye the same / or any stranger Denyson or Englyssheman / being within this his realm / vpon like pain as is before rehearsed. ¶ Furthermore our said sovereign lord the king / chargeth and commandeth / that no maner of person or persons / use / exercise / or haunt any playing at the Teneys / dice / Boules / cards / Tables / or any other unlawful games / contrary to such laws / ordinance / and good statutes / as be provided and made in that behalf. And that every person and persons / keeping any Hosterye / inn / or Alehouse / within this his realm of england / immediately after this proclamation and publycacion of this the kings pleasure had and made / shall not onely eschew all maner unlawful games to be used in their houses: but also shall without contradiction / suffer such persons as be and shalbe authorised by the king for that purpose / to take and brenne the said Tables / dice / cards / Boules / Closshes / Pynnes / balls / and all other things pertaining unto 〈◇〉 said unlawful games, For the kings express determynacion & pleasure is / for great respects and causes / that the said unlawful games shall not from henceforth in any wise / in the foresaid places and houses be exercised / haunted or used / under the pain of the kings indygnacion and imprisonment / as is before rehearsed. ¶ Furthermore our said sovereign lord / considering that there is great abundance and plenty of all maner of grains / within this his realm of england( our lord god be thanked). yet ●●●erthelesse / by the inordinate iniquity and covetousness of certain evil disposed persons / more regarding their own pertyculer 〈◇〉 / than the due order of charity and commen wealth of this his realm / do sell the same grains at great and excessyue prices / throughout this his realm / to the great hurt & impouerysshing of his subiectes of the same. ¶ wherefore the king our said sovereign lord / by thaduyce of his said counsel / chargeth and commandeth / that every person and persons within the counties and places where their abiding shalbe / do show and detect unto one or some of the said Justices of Peace / within the said Counties or place aforesaid / as nere as they can imagine or conject / what should be the occasion or cause why that grains should be at so great and excessyue prices / and whether the same do insurge and arise by forstallynge / regratyng / or engrosyng of grains( as it is thought to his highness and his honourable counsel / that it so should be) which is contrary to his laws. And to detect and show( all favour and dread put a parte) the name and names of such persons / as they shall think to be regratours / forestallers / or engrosers of grains / or whether there be used any undue mean / by reason whereof the said price of grains should be so excessyuely enhanced. And furthermore the kings pleasure is / that all and singular Iustices of Peace through this his realm of england: do diligently inquire and search for reformation of the premisses / and punish the malefactours and offenders / in that case offending. ¶ not failing thus to do / as they will answer unto the kings highness / at their uttermost parylles: commanding and straightly charging / all and singular Mayres / Sheriffes / Iustices of Peace / bailiffs / Constables / Hedborowes / and other his officers and ministers of Iustice / as well within liberties & places priueleged / as without / that from henceforth and from time to time / they shall se this the kings proclamation / commandment and pleasure / to be put in due & effectuell execution( all favour / dread / malice and meed utterly set a parte) as they will deserve his graces special thankes / and by doing the contrary / to be in his high indignation and displeasure. ¶ God save the king. ¶ Cum privilegio.
