¶ A proclamation for resysting and withstanding of most damnable heresies / sown within this realm / by the disciples of Luther and other heretics / perverters of Christes religion. THe king our sovereign lord / of his most virtuous and gracious disposytion / consydring that this his noble realm of england / hath of long time continued / in the true catholic faith of Christes religion / And that his most noble progenitors / kings of this his said realm / hath before this time made and enacted / many devout laws / statutes and ordinances / for the maintenance & defence of the said faith / again the malicious and wicked sects of heretics and Lollardes / Who by {per}uersion of Holy scripture / do induce erroneous opynions so weth sedition among Christen people / and finally do disturb the peace and tranquillity of Christen realms / as late happened in some partes of Garmany / Where by the procurement and sedition of Martyn Luther / and other heretics / were slain an infinite nombre of Christen people. Consydring also / that as well by the corruption and malice of indiscrete preachers / fautors of the said erroneous sects / as by certain heretical and blasphemous books / lately made and privily sent in to this realm / by the disciples / fautors / and adherents of the said Marthyn Luther & other heretics: Where by the kings subiectes be likely to be corrupted / unless his highnesse( as Defensor of the Faith) do put to his most gracious help & authority royal / to the due & speedy reformation therof. His highnesse therfore / like a most gracious prince / of his most blessed and virtuous disposition / for the incomparable zeal / which he hath to Christes religion and Faith / & for the singular love and affection that he beareth to all his good subiect{is} of this his realm / & specially to the salvation of their souls / according to his office & duty in that behalf. willeth and intendeth to provide with all convenient expedition / that this his noble realm may be preserved from the said pestiferous / cursed / & seditious errors. And for as much as his highnesse is credibly informed / that some of the said errors be already sown & spread within this his realm / partly by the corruption of indiscrete preachers / partly by erroneous books: compyled / printed and written / as well in the english tongue / as in latin & other languages / replete with most venomous heresies / blasphemies & slanders intolerable / to the clene ears of any good Christen man: His highnesse therfore / like a most gracious & Christen prince / only intending the safeguard of this his realm / the preseruation of his subiectes & salvation of their souls / willeth to put now in execution / with all diligence possible: all good laws / statutes & ordinances / concerning the p̄mysses before this time provided / made / & ordained by his most noble progenitors / kings of england / for that purpose & intent: which laws & statutes by our said sovereign lord & his most honourable counsel / by long & deliberate advise / for thextirpacion / suppressyng & withstanding of the said heresies / haue ben sene & examined / and by them in every parte / thought good & necessary to be put in execution. wherefore his highnesse chargeth & straitly commandeth / all and every his lords spiritual & temporal / wretches / Iustices of the peace / sheriffs / Mayres / bailiffs / Constables / and all other his officers / ministers / and all his true & loving subiectes: that all favour / affection & partiality laid a{per}te / they effectually with all diligence and s●udy / endeuoir themselves substantially / to thexecutyng of all & every the articles hereafter ensuing / without dissimulation / interm●●sion or excuse / as they will avoyde his high indignation and displeasure. ¶ first that no man within the kings royalme / or other his dominions / subiectes to his highness / here after presume to preach / teach / or inform any thing openly or privily / or compyle & writ any book / or hold exercise / or keep any assemblies or scoles / in any maner of wise / contrary to the catholic faith / or de●minacion of holy church. Nor that any {per}son within this his said realm & dominions / do presume to preach openly or secretly / without they haue first obtained licence of the bishop of the diocese / where they intend to preach / Curates in their parisshes / {per}sons privileged / and other by the lawe of the church onely except. ¶ Also that no man wittingly hereafter favour / support or maintain any {per}son / which precheth in form aforesaid / or that maketh any such or like conuenticles & assemblies / holdeth or exerciseth any scoles: maketh / writeth or publissheth any such book: teacheth / informeth / or steereth the people / or any of them / in any maner of form to the said errors. moreover / that all and every person & {per}sons having any books or writings / of any such erroneous doctrine & opinion: do deliver or cause to be delivered effectuelly / and actuelly / all & every such books and writing / to the bishop of the dioces / or to the ordinary of the place / within .xv. dayes after this proclamation pronounced. ¶ And in case any {per}son or persons / of what estate / condition / or degree so ever he or they be: do or ●
