¶ Tertio die novembris anno .xxi. Henrici .viii. ¶ The act agayns killing of calves. FOr as much as of old time great multitude of cattle was yearly increased by weynyng bringing up and rearyng of calves thorowowte this realm whereby the number of oxen kyen& steers were in such abundance and plenty that beffe and all other vy●tuall was then good cheap and sold to the kyngys subiectys at reasonable penny worths and prices until now of late yeres passed that the breders of such calves of their covetous myndy s haue used to sell their calves young suckyng to butchers/ waynyng/ rearyng and bringing up few or none/ whereby thencrease of old catell and also thencrease that should or might haue comen and grown of the same is heinously mynyshed and decreased in such wise that greatderth of catell and other vyctuall hath and doth daily spring grow continue and arise throughout this realm not onely to the great enhaunsyng of the pryses of beffes and all maner vyctuall but also to the great mynyshyng and enpayreng of good hospytalyte and extreme undoing of the Kyngys poor and needy subiectys within the same which inconuenyence and great scarcytye is like to ensue and increase more and more yf speedy remedy be not provided in that behalf. Be it therfore ordeynyd and enactyd by the king owre sovereign lord the lords spiritual and temporal and the comyns in this present parliament assembled and by the authority of the same that no maner parsonne parsons being butchers or other inhabytyng within this realm wales or the marches of the same shall from the first day of january next coming during three hole yeres then next folowgkyll or cause to be killed any maner young suckyng calf or calves to be sold or put to sale to any person or parsons hole or by retail/ which calf or calves so hereafter to be killed shall happen to fall or to be calved between the said first day of january& the first day of may in any of the said iij. hole yeres upon pain of .vi. s. viij. d. for every calf fallen or calved between the said dayes and killed and put to sale contrary to this act/ to be paid& forfaytted by every such boucher or butchers and other which shall kill or cause to be killed and put to sale any such calf or calves so falling and to be calved between the said first day of january and the said first day of May during the said .iii. yeres The one half of every such for fayture to be to th use of our sovereign lord the king and tother half to the party that will sue for the same by bill action of debt or information in any of the kyngys courtys wherein no wager of law esson nor protection shalbe allowed. ¶ provided always that every lord marcher haue the forfaytys proffytys and auauntagys onely of every such offender and offenders against the purueyeng of this act with in their seygneouryes liberties& fraunchessys royal. ¶ The act lymytyng the covetise of hattys and cappys brought from beyond the see. THe king our sovereign lord by the assent of the lord● spiritual and temporal and the comyns of this present parliament assembled and by the authority of the same hath ordained established and enacted for the comen wealth of the subject of this his realm/ that no maner person or parsons what so ever he or they be from the feast of the puryfycacyon of our lady next coming do sell or cause to be sold within this his realm to any person or parsons any wollen hattys or bonett● or wollen hat or cap made or to be made in any place or placys out of this realm of england in any of the parties of beyond the see over or above the prycys under written/ that is to say no such cap or bonnet to be sold above the foam of .ii. s sterling and no such hat to be sold above the some of ten pence/ and no such single crown cap nor single night cap to be sold above the some of .vi. pence upon pain to forfeit for every such bonnet cap or hat at any time after the same feast to be sold over the price above said contrary to the tenor of this act .xl. s. sterling/ all which forfeiture shall extend onely to the loss of the seller or sellers therof& to no neither/ The one half therof to be leueyd and recoueryd to the use of our said sovereign lord and the other half to the party that will sue for the famed in any of our sovereign Lord the kyngys courtys by action of debt bill information or other wise in which action or suit no protection wager of law nor esson shalbe alowedor admyttyd. ¶ And be yt further enacted by the authority above said/ that every person or parsons being or weryngany such bonnet cap or hat made out of this realm may lawfully at all times hereafter use were& detain any such bonnet cap or hat caps or hatt● without seizure of the same or any danger loss or other for fayture or penalty to be had or suffered for the same/ any matter clause or other thing conteynyd or expressyd in this present act or acts heretofore made to the contrary not wythstandyng. ¶ God save the king and preserve the commyn wealth.
