WHere amongst many good and wholesome laws and statutes of this realm, there is made and ordained one statute for maintenance of Archery, & sundry statutes for repress and reformation of playing at dice, cards, Tonnys, bowlyng, and other unlawful games: A statute made for reformation of apparel and raiment, And another statute made for punishment and ordering of sturdy beggars. All which statutes as well by obstinacy and wylfulnes of the subiectes of this realm, as also by negligence and affection of the kings Iustices of peace, and other ministers, that haue power to put them in due execution, haue not ben observed and kept, but neglected and contemned: to the great discontentation and displeasure of the kings highness, and to the great hurt of the common weal of this his realm. The kings maicstie therfore by the advise of his lords spiritual and temporal, and the commons in this present parliament assembled, deeply pondering & considering, that the said statutes greatly tend to the advancement of the common weal and surety of this his realm, and to the great commodity of his loving subjects of the same, doth straightly charge & commande al & singular his subiectes, of what estate degree or condition so ever he or they be, that they and every of them from the feast of the Annunciation of our lady next coming do keep and observe the statute of apparel in such maner form and condition, as in the same statute particularly is contained and expressed. And shall also from henceforth keep and observe all the other statutes, made for or concerning maintenance of archery, punishment of beggars, & reformation and abuse of unlawful games, and put al & every of the same statutes above said in due & resolve execution, according to their tenors purportes and effects, vpon the pains & losses of the forfeitures limited in every of the said statutes, which pains and forfaytures the kings highness will not hereafter at any time remit pardon nor forgive to any of the offenders in any of the said statutes, but intendeth to take the same pains and forfaytures according to his laws from time to time, as the case shall require in that behalf. And over this his highness straightly chargeth and commandeth as well his lords spiritual and temporal, as also all Iustices of peace, Mayres, sheriffs, Baylyues, and al other ministers & officers what so ever they be, that they & every of them, within their authorities, as well within liberties as without, without favour affection or corruption shal put their effectual endeavour & diligences for the due observation & execution of the said statutes and every of them, & specially every of the said lords, and all other householders amongst their own famylyes and household servants, as they and every of them and all other his loving subiectes, will haue his most gracious favour and thankes, and avoid the penalties limited by the said statutes and his most dreadful indignation and displeasure, and coil answer to his maigesty for contemnynge his laws and this his graces proclamation, at their uttermost perils.
