❧ By the queen. THe queens majesty being sundry ways informed, that many merchants, as well of her own subiects as strangers, seeking their own singular game and advantage, contrary to all reason and the common wealth of her majesties good and natural subiects, and directly against thauncient laws and Statutes of this realm, haue of late gathered into their hands great quantities of hops, making such a monopoly of the same hops. as the hundreth weight of Hops which hath ben usually sold within these few yeeres at xiii. s. iiii. d. or xx. s. at the most for every hundreth, be now sold for syxe pounds and more. The ill example whereof, might bring the like monopolies of other wears and marchaundizes, to the great loss of the multitude of merchants using the trade of merchandise, and to the great decay of the common wealth of this her majesties realm: Doth therefore straightly charge and command, that from and after the first day of February next, no merchant be he her majesties natural subject, or stranger, shall put to sale any hops, directly or undirectly, in gross or by retail, at any greater or more price then forty shillings for every hundreth at the most, vpon pain of incurring such penalties, as ben provided by her majesties laws, and vpon her majesties high displeasure and imprisonment. Straightly charging and commanding all manner her majesties officers and ministers, to whom it shall appertain, to fee that the premises be effectually put in execution, and the offenders therein duly punished. given at her majesties Castle of windsor, the xxx. of january, the sixth year of her highnes reign. God save the queen. Imprinted by Richard jug and John Cawood Printers to the queens majesty. Cum privilegio Regiae Maiestatis.
