A LITTLE treatise of Astronomy, very necessary for physic and surgery, declaring what herbs, and all kind of medicines are appropriate and under the influence of the Planets, signs and constellations. And also the parts and members of the body thereto corresponding, and how ye shall bring the virtue of the Heavens and nature of the Sters to every part of man's body being diseased or sick to the sooner recoverance of health. And also how to choose the most luckey days and times for the above said, the which shallbe appointed by the Almanac yearly, according to the course of the Moon, passing by all the Signs and Stars in one revolution gathered and set forth by ANTHONY ASKHAM Physician in the year of our Lord God M. D. L. the twelve day of Februarye. ☞ THOMAS PAYNEL ❧ Repulse the beginning of every malady For medicines ministered not in dew season. Doth not relieve or help the misery Of such as hath by long contraction differed the time of ministration. Whereby their malady fiercely might increase Nature corrupted the body to deface. ❧ In time to minister medicines the sick doth relieve And wine out of time doth the much damage Increase of pains the patient doth achieve But in time to take plasture the sore doth assuage All things in season should have their passage Remedy for disease in time to procure. Thus all things are subject to time and to measure. ¶ Finis ꝙ Thomas Paynel. ❧: THE EPISTLE to the Reader. IT is manifest and well known, good Reder, that all herbs stones, gums, and metals, hath their generations, dispositions, virtues and proprieties of the Son, Moon, and Stars, so that every herb hath certain Stars appropriate and addict unto them, of whom they receive such influence and operation, as is according to the nature of the Stars, the which is known of long time by daily experience, in considering their movings, their conjunctions and aspects. And also marking their influences, and properties at such like times aforesaid Also by further experience, the Philosopher hath found forth seven Stars orrotical in seven several heavens or spears, and of sundry influences and operations, and according to such men of such like condition, they have given them names, as Saturn, jupiter, and Mars, and so forth. Also all the rest of the Stars are fixed in the eight heaven, or spear amongs whom are ymagened. xii. beasts called signs, and. xxviii. other constellations, and by such like experience of influences, hath named a certain number of Stars to be a Ram, to be a Bull, to be a Lion, to be a Scorpion, to be a Bear, to be a Dog and so forth Also the heavenly Stars hath certain commixtion with the elements, and the Elements with them, so that all things made of the Elements, receiveth certain qualities and operations sensible, by an Elemental power, and also they receive certain operations, and virtues insensible and occult, by a celestial and heavenly power, as all herbs and medicines solutisse are either, hot, dry, moist, or cold, by the elemental power, and also by the celestial power, some purge colour, some melancholy, some phlegm and some from the head, some from the stomach, some from the heart, some from the liver, and so forth of the which no man knoweth no other cause but the alonely property and virtue of the heavens. Also furthermore it is known and expert how the planets signs, and constellations doth work particularly in divers parts of man's body, and specially the seven planets, unto whose influence all other Stars are obedient and agreeable, furthermore know that the Son, and Moon are chief of all other planets, for the Son is the minister of all lively property, and giveth all things life, and maketh all herbs to grow, till they come to their perfection. Also the Son draweth first from the root the lively moisture, that maketh the herb to grow, & wax. Saturn holdeth the matter together in the root stalk and leaves. jupiter giveth the temperature, benefete, shap, and fashion, and the airy humour and smell. Mars hardeneth and giveth the woody stalks and strength. The Son giveth a continual increase of life, by a lively heat. Venus giveth the flowers, fairness and temperate humour. Mercury giveth the bark and seed, the preveand occult property The Moon giveth the leaves, and marry humour. And thus understand of all other things both of stones, gums, and metals, and also of the body and sundry parts of mankind, furthermore know that the first and most principal workman is the father of heaven, the which having in the Godhead, in the mind divine, and in the henuen archetypi, the edees similitudes, and the images of all things create, before the creation of the world, the which at the proper instant of the creation he hath infused these similitudes and images, being even parcels, and powers of the Godhead in all his creatures, and as he hath made all things of nought, so are yet all things nought, the which wanteth these edees, similitudes, images and powers of the godhead, for he is Omnia in omnibus, secondary he hath create instruments as second causes the which are the Son, Moon, and Stars, whose matter, influence and operations is nothing but by his power infused, the which he hath made alonely to declare his glory and high workmanship to his intellectyfe creatnes. Also know that the Son is the principal workman of God, and the planets are instruments and tolls wherewith the Son worketh, and the signs and constellations are other mean instruments to the planets, and the Element are the matter that they work upon, and all things made of the four elements, are the substances and bodies with life schape & faryon that they make of the Elements, as man, beast, fish, fowl, herb and stone. Also know that the Moon is the lowest of all the planets and next to the Elements, having the jest and swiftest course of all the other planets, and is the mediatrix, cariare and daily instruments, and conveyre of the virtues and properties of all the other planets, from the one to the other, and is also the commixter and joinere together of all the heavens and elements as by example, when the Son cometh to us ward in spring time and at all other times he giveth light to all the Stars and planets, and this light by an occult virtue, is moving and lively, and is conveyed by the Moon to the element of the fire, and there is made a lively heat. Also the Moon, and the element of the fire doth convey it to the elements of the air, where it is made a temperate lively heat, and from the air to the water, and so receiveth an humoral moisture in concerning the temperate lively heat finally the earth, the which is the mother and matter of all the other things, and this lively heat entering and opening the pores of the earth, and also of the roots and seeds of herbs, giveth quicning, and moving upward again from the centre, and by the element of the water, ministered by the Moon a conserving moisture, and by the Air and fire a temperate lively heat, the herb beginneth to spring and appear sensible. Then the Moon in her course passing by the Stars, signs or constellation of Saturn ministereth the influence of Saturn to the herb, the which thicketh and keepeth the matter in roots stalks and leaves together, by the element of the earth. Also in passing by jupiter she ministereth his influence to the herb, in giving temperature shape fashion and smell, by the element of the air, and in passing by Mars, by Venus, by Mercury, or by their Stars and constellations ye shall understand in like manner. Also if the Moon should not have this ministration daily amongs the planets, this succession of the growing of herbs should not follow ordinately, and oftentimes we see daily decay and let of these procedings, the which the cause is of the conjunctions and aspects of contrary planets to the procedings thereof, as at such time, when Venus and Mercury should bring forth the flower fruit and seed. Then at that proper instant or at the entrance of the revolution figure, Saturn and Mars, being in dygnites, doth thick and make cold, dry, and earthy and utterly sleeth that tender matter and lively humour, whereof the flower and seed should have been ordained and made, and thus finally the Moon having daily administration of all manner of properties of herbs, both elemental, and celestial, it shallbe declared by the course of the Moon in the signs, the time of ministering of herbs and medicines for all parts of the body, the which times shallbe known by the Almanac as is afore said, wherefore now to conclude gentle reader I have written this little treasyse, not for leraned men but all only for the unlearned English reader, that they may partly perceive the working of the omnipotent power, in his instruments, the heavens and elements in the elementates, or in al things that are made of the four element to the high laud and praise of the Deyte, to whom be all glory world without end Amen. ☞ FINIS. ☞ The division of this book.
