THe knowledge of histories and chronicles, right worshipful sir antony how pleasant and necessary it is (although part lie I perceive myself and learned men declare the same at large) the common use and worldly practice showeth evidently, and that it is the record of our forefathers lives, without reading and knowledge whereof we walk in darkness, and live like children new come into the world. But histories and Chronicles faithfully written set before our face, as presently to look upon all ages, all times, all changes, all states, and all doings, even from the beginning of the world to our own time, yea, without that we know of no world before our being. Much praise therefore, and great thanks have they deserved which hath truly travailed in that sort of labour, as did that noble clerk Eusebius, and our worshipful Country man master Bead, whose worthy doings I would some witty learned man would at this time follow for an example. We had in our English tongue a little short Chronicle noting many things worthy of memory, which book I have by my poor labour somewhat augmented, and enlarged with more matter, but oh good Lord nothing to the purpose of my good will, if I had as much knowledge as I have desire of furtherance, and because right worshipful sir Antony I know your good mind, toward the a vauncement of all honest learning I dedicate this mine endeavour and labour to your mastership most heartily desiring your favourable help against the next printing of the same, by your own examination, or else by the diligence of some other, by your mastership to the same assigned. Requiring also and heartily praying my frences and brothers of the occupation of printing to suffer me quietly to enjoy the benefit of these mine own labours, and to have the advantage of mine own invention as I shall gladly suffer every of them to enjoy the commodities of his, & then we shall brotherlike live in concord one by another, this wishing you good life and long. I bid you far well At Cantorbury. etc. ¶ To know certain when the four terms of the year concerning the law begin and end. ¶ The term next after the Nativity of our Lord, beginneth the xxiiii. day of january, and endeth the xii day of February. ¶ Easter Term beginneth the the xviii day after Easter, reckoning Easter day for one, and endeth the fourth day after the Ascension of our Lord. ¶ Trinity Term beginneth the morrow after Corpus Christi day and endeth the wednesday fortnight after. ¶ Mighelmas Term beginneth the ninth day of Octobre, and enthe xxviii day of November. ¶ The exchequer is open alway viii. days before the beginning of every Term. ¶ A true and perfect reckoning, of the years and time, from Adam unto Christ gathered out of the holy scripture.
