ENGLANDS Deliverer. The Lord of Hosts Her strong God, none like to Him Set forth In his Excellencies and Glorious appearances, for our Deliverance. In some Exercises upon the thanksgiving, for that late Memorable Victory at Dunbar in Scotland, Sept. 3. 1650. Upon the dying words of Mses, Deut. 33. 26. &c. By Jo. Fenwicke signior, Master of the hospital of Sherburn house near Durham. Psal. 76. 3. There broke he the bow, the shield, and the battle, Selah. Isay 35. 3. 4. 5. Strengthen the weak hands and feeble knees, &c. Tandem bona causa triumphant. Fred. Imp. Elect. Newcastle, Printed by S. B. 1651. To the known God. the most high &c Mighty conqueror King Jesus King of Ss. king of kings and Lord of Lords, King of all the earth. Lord of Hosts, mighty in battle, mighty to save, the blessed & only potentate now in the field for his right of Inheritance and title to all the kingdoms of th'world which the father has given him, a portion with the great ( Isa. 53. 12.) above all the Monarchs of the World. Great Generalissimo of all the Saints. The Lord of Hosts his Excellency of Excellencies, who rides upon the Clouds for our help, our strong God, none like to Him. And To the Suprem authority of this nation, the Parliam. of England with the R. honourable council of State, the grand trustees of the Lord of hosts in his interest, and high designs for his glorius kingdom in these latter dayes. And To the Right Honourable the Lord General cronwell his Excellency, our Englands Moses, with all his called, and chosen, and faithful: by & with whom the Lamb overcoms his enemies and makes way to his kingdom. Revel. 17. 14. The most unworthy of all his and your Servants and Souldiers, most humbly Dedicates his dying remembrance of the late wonderful deliverance of his Country, in the late memorable and glorious Victory at Dunbar in Scotland, when a potent Enemy threatened our Englands destruction, and the great work of the Lord Jesus so happily begun with us; For a Monument to Posterity. Jo. Fenwick signior. Deut. 33. 26. 27. 28. 29. Verses. Verse 26. There is none like to this strong God Verse 26. o Jesurun, ( o Israel, as Deut. 32. 15. Isay 44. 2.) who rides upon the Heavens for thy help, and in his Excellency upon the highest Clouds. I, One of the least of the Saints and Servants of Christ by the assistance of the holy Spirit, tell you, That I have in sundry Exercises, endeavoured to hold out to you, some light of the great design▪ the Lord Jesus King of Saints is about in the world, in these latter dayes; for the making way to his Kingdom, and spreading the same to the Nations of Jews and Heathen, who have not heard of his famed; such a Kingdom as cannot be shaken, Heb. 12. 28. when all the Kingdoms of the world shall be shaken to pieces, to pull down the pillars and interest of Anti-Christs Kingdom by this great Earthquake, which now at this day is shaking the Nations, overthrowing Hag. 2. 6. 22. Thrones and Dominions, of all that oppose his design; as we have seen with our eyes in England and Ireland, and the Nations about us have stood astonied at it; so as he will let the world know, that no Kingdom or Government shall be able to stand in opposition to his Kingdom, which will break all opposing Kingdoms and Nations to pieces, until it be exalted. We are come this day to a duty of Thanksgiving for one of the memorable and wonderful works he hath done for England, hardly to be parallelled since these wars begun: as like unto that famous deliverance of his People at the read Sea of old▪ under Moses their Leader and governor; and as suitable to that, we have chosen this Portion of Scripture to insist upon, Deut. 33. 26 There's none like to this strong God o Jesurun; o Israel, &c. For clearing out of the mind of the Spirit of God▪ the principal Author of all Scriptures, we will first show you the secondary Author, who he was, Moses. 2. The Matter or Subject, they were the dying words of Moses, after he had blessed the People of Israel. 3. His scope and drift herein to set forth to all Posterity an eternal Remembrance of their Deliverance, by their God, set forth in his Attributes and Excellencses, as none like him; and no People like that People saved by the Lord, in the last verse of this Text. Moses the Concerning the Author. man of God( verse the first) was a Type of Christ and honoured of God as a faithful observer of all God gave him in command concerning the house of God, Heb. 3. 2. 5. Moses, who( after he was wonderfully preserved, and drawn out of the water) when he came to age, refused to be called the son of great K. Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the People of God, then to enjoy the pleasures of Pharaoh's Court, the pleasures of sin for a season, esteeming the reproach of Christ, greater riches, then the Treasures of egypt, having an eye to the recompense of reward; who by Faith forsook egypt, not fearing the wrath of the King, looking to him who was invisible: who by Faith, passed through the read Sea dry foot, when the egyptians were drowned, Heb. 11. 23. to 30. This faithful Moses God hath honoured with( as it were) a pillar of remembrance here under the Gospel, that this name may never be forgotten of such a godly Leader and Governor of his people under his charge. And here in the first verse of this Chapter of our Text, the holy Ghost a little before his dying, writes his Epitaph with a Title of honour, Moses the man of God; not barely, a man of God▪ but The man of God, by way of Excellency. Moses the leader of the onely People of God out of egypt, through the read Sea▪ and through the wilderness, where he Penned that ninetieth psalm▪ to mind them of their mortality, and Gods unchangeable love to them in their long travail in the wilderness when they dwelled in Tents, and had not a house to put their heads in; then he sets out, how God was their dwelling place in all Generations. Moses that was King in Jesurun verse 5. of this 33. Chap of Deut. that is, Chief Magistrate, or governor; for then Rex was no more but Dax, onely as he was a Type of Christ the King of Saints; for Israel had no King till they waxed wanton and would be like the Heathen, grew weary of their State Government, the first and best, being of Gods appointment, and will be the last and most flourishing Government in the world; when Christ shall be King of all the earth, and no more Kings but he, as Zach. 14. 9. 10. Psal. 47. 7. but this by the way. We are yet upon the honourable remembrance of our Author Moses of whom again the holy Ghost saith there arose not a Prophet like unto Moses whom the Lord knew face to face, Deut. 34. 10. as after his death is spoken of him; yea, God so honoured him to among men, that lest they should Idolize his dead Corps, he would have no man ever know where he was butted: yet as if all this were not enough, God will have Moses to be remembered and honoared at the last and great triumph over all the enemies of Christs Kingdom, above all other songs of Sion, Moses and the lamb are joined. They shall sing the Song of Moses and of the lamb, Apoc. 15. 3. The Lambs song will be excellent▪ yet Moses must not be forgotten in it, Moses song must be one part of the song of the lamb with a remembrance of that great deliverance under his conduct, Exodus 15. From the excellency of this Author, and the honour God hath set upon him to all Generations; We will observe briefly two things▪ 1. That it is the greatest title of honour in the world to be truly called a man of God tis above the dignity of Alexander, or greatest conqueror in the world. 2. Tis the duty of a man of God, whom God hath exalted above others▪ as a chief Magistrate, a general, Leader, or chief Commander, as advanced above others, so to proceed, out-strip, and exemplarily to go before others, in all Religious exercises, and setting forth the honour of God to posterity, as Moses here doth in his dying words of our text. The author, and scope of our text being cleared; the words affords us this main Doctrine, as the very heart of the text. That there is no God like Israels God, the Saints God; this we will prove both by Scripture and reason, 1 Kings 8. 23. and 2 Chron 17. 20. There's no God like thee in Heaven above or earth below, Psal. 86. 8. there's no God like thee, no works like thy works; and Exod 15. 11. Who is like to thee, O Lord glorious in holinesse, fearful in praises, doing wonders? Who is like to thee among the most strong and valiant? Tremel. See Deut. 32. 39. The first reason of it, because he is this strong God, not a strong God onely but this strong God that hath so wonderfully delivered thee O Israel; this strong God, by way of excellency, above all other strengths in Heaven or Earth, the eternal God, verse 27. of our text; in whom is eternal strength, Isay 26. 4. My strength, and song, and my salvation, Isay 12. 2. Mighty in battle, Psal. 24. 8. Mighty to save, Isay 63. 1. None can deliver out of his hand, Isay 43. 13. Deut. 32. 39. The second reason, because he is the onely pure, full, and overflowing fountain of all strength, that human creatures can be capable of, to have or understand, and far above that too; all strength flows from him into the creature, whereby he gives and with draws at his pleasure, gives to his saints and servants in their need; and exhausts the very strength of his enemies in their day of greatest need, renders them like dry brooks, without water, to refresh or help one another. The third Reason, because the enemies of the Saints are strong & mighty, overtopping like mountains, all the Churches strength, and therefore their God had need be a strong God to grapple with them, when they are past mans meddling with, then saith he, be still, and know that I am God, I will be exalted in the earth, Psal. 46. when Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek, and all that dwelled at Tyre, that richest City in the world in those dayes, Psal. 83. 7. When the Pope and his sons Emperors, Kings and Princes, Germans, swedes, and Dane; Orange, France, and spain, are all in confederacy against his Saints and work in England; and Scotland too( amid the throng) then sure our Englands God had need to appear, the strong God none like to him. 1. use, Teacheth us wherein our strength lies at this day, in our interest in this strong God, the Saints God, none like him, and our interest in him is to be found and seen in our interest in his works at this day. 2. use, Of comfort to all the saints, his faithful servants and souldiers in greatest straits, this God whom we serve is able to deliver; nay, not onely able as the strong God, but is the active God; he sits not in his Throne at rest, if he sees his saints below in a straight, at a low or forlorn condition, but he is active: our text saith, he comes riding upon the Clouds, with great celerity, to help at a pinch; there's no danger or difficulty, his saints his souldiers are in, but he makes speed to it for their recruit, when all recruits fail and come too short▪ he rides upon the Clouds. And how, in what manner comes he? In his Excellency, saith the text, that is, in all full accomplishments, in all his attributes they stand in need of, as counsel, Courage, wisdom, Strength, in gentleness, and meekness to his saints; but in wrath and rage to his enemies, set forth by his stately riding upon his white Horse too, Revel. 19. a symbol of triumph and joy to his saints, as their King of Kings, and Lord of Lords, but in garments dipped in blood signifying a bloody day to his enemies. There's no corner in the world, or time, or condition, wherein his saints are in jeopardy, but he comes post to their recruit, and help; as when he saw his people in egypt at a straight, he comes down to deliver them with a witness, Exod. 3. 8. If his People be at a straight, he will be at it for their help, he rides upon the highest Clouds, and in his Excellency too, with great expedition. 3. use, terror to all the enemies of his designs, whether open, or secret enemies; this strong God, this eternal God, comes in his excellency, riding upon the Clouds ( saith the text) in all his accomplishments, to help and strengthen his saints in the day of battle; he comes to disarm you( as we may say) takes away your strength, that you cannot find your hands in your great boasts and brags, Psal. 76. 5. be ye never so stout and strong, so numerous in multitudes, as of late at Dunbar in Scotland, men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie; put both together in the balance, and they come out lighter then vanity, Psal. 62 9. your multitudes of souldiers are vanity, but your King, your Lords, your great Commanders, and Germaine souldiers you trust in▪ are worse; for they are a lie; they promise you that they cannot perform; and therefore when the poor men of low degree are joined with them, and put all in the balance with eternal strength, they come out lighter and worse then they went in, lighter then vanity: all your Idols you trust in are vanity, vain helps against eternal strength, all your recruits come too late; in your greatest need you may sand post to this Prince, to that Nation, to this or that party of your best reserves, but all too late; King Jesus, the King of saints out-rides them all in his excellencies upon the Clouds, he will not miss a moment of his time to help his souldiers that fight his battles, to out-plot, out-power all his enemies, so that the day is done, the battle won, ere your recruits can come. praise to his everlasting name, who in his excellency rides upon the Clouds for our help, triumphing gloriously, as he did for his people of old. Exod. 15. 6. Thy right hand, O Lord, became glorious in power, thy right hand, O Lord, dashed the enemies to pieces; And in the greatness of thine excellency, thou hast overthrown them that rose up against thee. The enemies said, We will pursue, divide the spoil, our lust shall be satisfied upon them, our hands shall destroy them. But the portion of Jacob is not like to them, he makes his saints his battell-axe, and weapons of war, and with them he destroys Kingdoms, and breaks Nations to pieces, their horses and horsemen, young and old, Captains and Rulers, Jeremy. 91. 19 to 23. Now I appeal to you all this day, has not the Lord of Hosts, the strong God, done thus for England, for our Army late at Dunbar in Scotland, when our Army was sick and weak and thin in number; and the enemies strong, and numerous, above twice our strength in number; they said over-night, Come on, we will pursue, spoil, and take all the English to morrow by seven of the Clock we will destroy, we will beset the passes at Copperspeth, &c. that none shall escape into England; we will drive them into the sea, or sand them to the Barbado's; but o! how were they deceived, God made them to be found liars( as verse 29. of our text) how quickly, with great expedition, came in our strong God, riding upon the Clouds in all his excellencies to our recruit and help, when no recruits were near, but a numerous strong Army at their heels pursuing, and our Army, driven to the very Sea-shoare, as Israel was by that great Pharaoh and his mighty Army; and also had they not beset the passages at Copperspeth &c. that none should escape into England? Did not then, even then, and in that straight, this strong God the Lord of Hosts come in to our help to our recruit, in his excel●… y, in all his accomplishments; riding upon the Clouds for our help with great celerity, put on his garments of vengeance to avenge the quarrel of that broken Covenant, when there was none to help, his arm brought salvation, Isay 63. 5. in such a time and way as men least thought of; Mounted upon his white horse, going out conquering, and to conquer, that numerous Army by a handful of his saints and servants, in such a Revel. 6. 2. to 50 wonderful manner, as hardly can be parallelled since these wars begun. praise to his name, his name is onely excellent, who has triumphed gloriously, to get himself an everlasting name, in that great Victory, That the Nations about us may tremble at his presence, among his saints and servants, when he did those terrible things, which we looked not for; The mountains( of his enemies strength) flowed down, that is, melted like wax at his presence, Isay 64. 2. 3. to teach them, that there's no contesting Psal. 97. against eternal strength of this strong God in his designs for making way to his Kingdom. The eternal God is thy protection, and underneath are Verse 27. the everlasting arms: he shall scatter the enemy before thy face, and he shall say, Destroy. The meaning is the eternal God above with the eternal unwearied arms of his Saints and Souldiers below, is the Protection of his people, before whose faces he will scatter and destroy the enemies, there's no difficulty, but in the everlasting arms, how that is to be understood. For clearing whereof, we find this word everlasting frequently used in Scripture, for a long continuance, and durable condition. Gen. 17. 8 The Land of Canaan given to the Israelites for an everlasting Possession, that is, of long continuance: And the doors or entrance into Christs Kingdom, are called everlasting Gates, Psal. 24. 7. And yet Christs Kingdom hath a period, when he resigns it up to 1 Cor. 15, 24. the Father: so the arms of his saints and souldiers are here, said to be everlasting arms, of durable strength, for his works of long continuance, unwearied, because he employs them to destroy his enemies; so that the meaning of the words being cleared, the text affords us this Doctrine. That the eternal God above, and his faithful Souldiers below, are the onely protection of our Israel, our Nation, our State, our Parliament, our People. use of Exhortation to all true English-men, to be true and faithful to the interest of this strong eternal God; for in his interest lies all our safety and protection. 2. Be tender of his souldiers, who are faithful to his interest, your greatest interest in his design for his Kingdom. Neglect them not, as you love your own safety, they are the means below of your protection, they are prodigal of their blood for you. That the arms of the Saints( Christs Souldiers) are everlasting, unwearied arms. This may seem a strange Doctrine, but tis the words of the text, the very dictate of the holy Ghost, they are the Lord Jesus his Battell-axe and weapons of war, wherewith he destroys kingdoms, breaks Nations to pieces, jeremy 51. 19. Mighty enemies, mighty Nations, called everlasting mountains and hills, strong, and of long continuance, as Hab. 3. 6, They had need to have eternal strength in their weak arms, that have such tough work in hand. The Reasons why their Arms are Everlasting Arms, because they are acted by everlasting strength of an eternal God, which cannot be weakened nor wearied as long as his work is in their hands, but has a Spring of fresh reviving strength, for a recruit at need; and likewise they are acted by his eternal Decrees, and counsels, to out-plot and out-power too, all the enemies. The eternal God, the Lord of Hosts is their general, and they his sanctified ones, set a part to his work, and he musters them to the battle, Isay 13. 1. 2. He gives them the word of command, Destroy, Destroy, as here in our text, therefore they had need to have an unwearied strength, a tincture of eternal strength ●n it, to preserve it from wasting and wearing as his called, and chosen, and faithful; by and with whom, the lamb overcoms all that acted in the interest of Anti-Christ, Rev. 17. 11. Tis easy to tell then who shall be Victors, conquerors in all these conflicts in Christs interest for his Kingdom, the Saints, his Souldiers; their Arms cannot be weak or weary, to whom he gives eternal strength, and trusts in his eternal Arm amongst them in the field; and they overcome by the blood of the lamb and word of his testimony, Revel. 12. 11. Our Armies shall be Rampant, when the Lord of Hosts gives out the word, Destroy, Destroy. Woe then to all the enemies of Christs Kingdom, Destroyed they shall all be, the Lord Iesus stirs up jealousy like a man of war, Isay 42. 13. His fury is up, Isay 63. 5. &c. His wrath begins to burn, he hath given out the word of Command here in our text, to his Souldiers, Armed with everlasting Arms, unwearied strength and spirits, and says, Destroy Destroy; his everlasting arm is amongst them: then down goes the enemies in heaps, and others fly before their faces; we have often forewarned you to take heed any of you be found amongst the enemies, or in their counsels and plots; nay, if it be but an ill wish, or ill heart to his high design, that ye perish not with them. Woe to them that strive against everlasting strength. From the last words of this Verse ( and he shall say, Destroy;) we may observe from the meaning of these words opened to you, That the eternal God, this strong God, the Lord of Hosts, will have a dreadful destruction ere long, upon all his enemies; and his Saints and Servants a wonderful deliverance. This we shall see clear from the Scripture, Isay 28. 21. Jehovah shall arise up as in Mount Perazim,( where David smote the philistines, 2 Sam. 5. 20. And he shall be wrath as in the valley of Gibeon,( where at the Prayer of Joshuah, the sun stood still, until he had destroyed five Kings of the Amorites, Ios. 10. 5 to 14. that( saith Isay) he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act; so that the Churches deliverance in the overthrow of the mighty enemies, is a strange work, few understand it, few believe it, even when in these dayes the Lord Iesus is doing it, Revel. 17. 11. 14. They shall fight with the lamb, but the lamb shall overthrow them, his Camp is great, his day is very terrible, Ioel 2. 10. He comes into the field with his bloody colours, with his garments dipped in blood, Revel. 19 13. and will stain all his raiment, for the day of vengeance is in his heart, the year of his redeemed cometh, Isay 63. 3. 4 A bloody day of vengeance is in his heart, all the world cannot pull it out, he will fill the places with dead bodies, Psal. 110. He shall drink of the Brook in the way, as a mighty conqueror, so eager in pursuit of his enemy, as David when he pursued the Philistimes, 1 Sam. 14. 24. as he shall neglect all repast or rest till he have dipped his feet in the blood of his enemies, and his dogs their Tongues therein, Psal. 68. 13. 23. so as all the enemies of Christs Kingdom shall have a bloody day of vengeance, and the Saints a bloody revenge ere long, and Israel shall do valiantly, Numb. 24. 18. Psal. 60. 12. through God we shall do valiantly, he shall tread down our enemies under his feet. Because till the enemies be all destroyed or vassalled, the Lord Jesus cannot set up his Kingdom in that transcendent glory in all the world which the Father hath given him, a portion with the great. Isay 53. 12. And he hath paid dear for it, purchased it with his own blood, and ere he be kept from it, he will make his proudest enemies blood go for it. The Lord Jesus is able enough, and could in a moment destroy all his enemies; but that after the abuse of his long patience, he will get himself an everlasting name in their fatal destruction. use. Tells us when the end of all these bloody troubles will be not till the enemies of Christs Kingdom be destroyed, or vassalled, and that we hope with us will not be long; he hastens his way to his Kingdom, his motions are rappid and swift, doth wonders in our dayes, and with us to the amazement of the Nations about us; wonders every year greater and greater, for us in England, that when his work is finished here, he may employ us of this Nation to help forward his work in the Nations about us, to pull down the Anti-Christian interest, and all the pillars of Satans kingdom: And tis not without ground conceived by many of the Learned, that in this watery Trigon or great revolution begun in 1642. and in this jubilee begun now 1650. the destruction of the enemies, and the glorious advancement of Christs Kingdom, throughout the world, shall be accomplished. For certain the time is near at hand, his word and works declare it, as we set forth in our SIONS JOY, Printed 1643. for Ben. Allen. London. That Israel alone may dwell safely, the Fountain( or Verse 28. Off-spring) of Jacob in a Land of corn and Wine; yea, his Heavens shall distil down due. This is the end of the great design of Christ Jesus in the world in the destruction of his enemies. That his Israel, his Saints, may dwell in safety, in a Land of plenty; till then, the Saints cannot be safe, or at rest, such is the malice of the enemies the Serpents seed; tis the end of his glorious work his strange work, that his Saints, his Servants may enjoy a refreshing rest in a fruitful▪ land of peace and plenty, after their long and bloody conflicts Hence observe, That this safe abiding rest, after all these present troubles, is peculiar to the Saints alone, our text saith it. The Lord shall destroy, destroy, that Israel may dwell safely in a land of plenty; ●t is their Interest let others look to theirs. There's no difficulty in these words but in that tis said his Heavens( that is, the Heavens over Jacobs head. Deut. 28. ●3.) shall drop down due to make the Land fruitful, in corn and Wine, for necessity and delight. This Doctrine is so plentifully cleared in Scripture, as we will not now spend more time in proving it, but hasten to a Conclusion. This use in general to us all, as Englishmen, as Governours, use of Euhortation. Governed, Parents, Children, Old and Young as we love our own and the Churches rest and safety, after all our dayes of trouble, to act strongly strenuously, for Christs interest against all the interests in the world, and all the Potent enemies thereof. Miserable men are they that are engaged in Anti-Christs interest, or any other interest in opposition to Christs interest. Blessed art thou, O Israel: Who is like unto thee, O people! Verse 29. saved by the Lord, the shield of thine help, and the sword of thine excellency: thine enemies, shall be found liars unto thee, and thou shalt tread upon their high places. The meaning is, That Israel, the People of God, are the onely happy People, blessed of the Lord, saved by the Lord their shield against all enemies, whose sword▪ destroying their enemies, is their onely excellency; let all their enemies boast and brag, they shall be found liars, and the Saints shall be the Conquerors, possess their possessions. That as there is no God like Israels God, so there is no People like his People. The works of God in the world, and at this day to England, hath proved this Doctrine true, and so we will hasten to an end. 1. Because they are saved onely by him, when all other helps fail them. 2. Because he is their shield, Gen. 15. 1. Psal. 33. 20. and the shields of the world belong to God, greatly to be exalted, Psal. 47. 9. use. Exhortation to England( my dear Country) to praise the Lord; O happy England, saved by the Lord; as there's no God like thy strong God, so there's no people, since Israels time, so wonderfully saved by the Lord; let our enemies brag and boast of all their power and assistance of foreign Nations, and what else they have to trust in, they shall be found liars, as they were now at Dunbar, praise your strong God, there's none like to him. This eternal God above, who by his everlasting Arms below, hath done wonders for England these late years: The Lord Jesus is upon his high design for his Kingdom, and he pursues it with violence; let us keep close to his interest, the Interest of England lies wrapped up in that; and he will maintain us in it: Our enemies shall be found liars, and we shall tread upon their high places. From hence our last Doctrine. That this strong, eternal God, the Lord of Hosts our general, will at last give a rich reward to his Saints, his faithful Servants and Souldiers. The text,( the dictate of the holy Ghost in these dying words of Moses the man of God) assures us the certainty of it. Thou that is this happy People, O Israel, saved by the Lord, shall tread upon their high places, that is, possess their possessions. ob. 10. 20. as was promised of old to Abraham. Gen. 22. 17.( the Father of the faithful) thy Seed shall possess the Gates( that is, the Judgement seats, the symbol of pomp and Power) of thine enemies, their Castles, fortified Cities, Forts, and Fortresses, and whatsoever the enemies have to delight or trust in, in England and Ireland witness this; and now of late in Scotland, Edenbrough and Leeth too, become our Possessions. First Reason, Because they have done him faithful service as his called, and chosen, and faithful, Revel 17. 11. And have been prodigal of their blood in his Interest, loved not their lives unto the death, Revel. 12. 11. Second Reason, Because he hath promised this rich reward here in our Text, and ob. 19. 20. Isay 11. Revel. 19. 17. And he is faithful, and true, and able to perform; for in righteousness he judgeth, and maketh war, Apoc. 19. 11. That his Saints and Servants may dwell safely, in a land of plenty; as before verse 28. of our Text. 1. use of comfort to the Saints and Souldiers of Christ, their reward is coming; this blessed and onely Potentate( 1 Timothy 6. 15.) brings his reward with him, Revel. 22. 12. 2. use, informs us of a sad doom to all the enemies, their reward is coming too, blood for blood, Revel. 18. A bloody revenge of all his servants blood they have shed. The Earth shall discover her blood, and no more hid her slain Isay 26. 21. And the slain of the Lord shall be many, Isay 66. 16. The Lord Jesus is up, and in the field, in his bloody colours, stains all his raiment in the bloody slaughter of his enemies Isay 63. 3. A symbol of black and bloody day of vengeance in his heart, and he will do execution; tis the vengeance of the Lord, and vengeance of his Temple, jeremy 50. 28. and 51. 11. Woe to you all, howl ye, for the day of the Lords vengeance is at hand, it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty, Isay 13. 6. And woe to all false Brethren, of whom the Saints are most endangered? Woe to Elam that bare the quiver in the day of their Brethrens distress, Isay 22. 6. Elam was a People joined to the Church, Nehem. 7. 12. and cap. 12. 42. But in the day of the Churches distress among the enemies. Ezek 32. 24. And therefore perish with them, jeremy 49. 36. Scotland look to it. So was Esau Jacobs Brother, who after he sold his birth-right for a Mease of Pottage, became his deadly enemy; I wish our Brethren of Scotland have not done so; they were first in this work in Christs Interest, against Anti Christs Interest▪ for which they were honoured, and rewarded of God and us; but o that of late they had not sold their birthright, their primary Interest in this work of Christ for a Mease of Court Pottage. Esau made a surer bargain, he had his ( in manibus) sure; but the Scots want theirs yet, they are like to get them out of a hot boiling pot upon a melting fire which may scorch them to the heart, Isay 64. 2. because there's death in the Pot the fury and hot wrath of God is in it; let them look to it betime, and be warned to get out of Christs way, for his wrath is begun to burn, Psal. 2 I loved and honoured that Nation whilst they acted in Christs interest against his enemies; but since they forsook his interest, and broke their Covenant with God and us, clear to all the wolrd. in Hameltons invasion, and ever since I leave them, now joined in the Anti▪ Christian interest▪ and pitty them: And O that God would open the eyes of the godly part among them and pluck them▪ as brands, out of the fire of his wrath▪ which is begun to burn, that they may not perish in his way, wherein he will tread down in his anger, all that oppose him, Isay 63. 6.
