A NEW BOOK OF maps, BEING A ready Guide or Direction for any Stranger, or other, who is to Travel in any part of the Common-wealth of England, Scotland, & Ireland.

To the Reader.  
I Doubt not but it will seem strange to all that know me, that I should employ the Press upon such a Subject as this, wherein the most familiar of my acquaintance could never discover in me any such intention. The truth is, I am no way ambitious of the Title of an Almanackmaker, much less of an ginger; the meanness of the former, and ignominy of the latter, being sufficient to keep back my desires from running after either. Nevertheless here is presented to thy view, that which will tell thee the day of the Month, the fixed Feasts▪ the movable Feasts, the beginning and ending of the Terms▪ the hour of Sunset, and indifferently well the age of the Moon for an Hundred years, the greater part whereof is already expired▪ This I did, because I myself have oftener desired to know the time already past, then that which is to come, and perhaps some others may be of my mind in this particular; and for such as care not for that, here is near Fifty years to come, which I take to be a competent time for a thing of this nature: As for the principal Matter of this Book, although the World abound with plenty of the like, yet have I never seen any, which to my mean capacity directs so ready a way for the finding out any Town mentioned therein: and it is not requisite that you should foreknow what County or part of the Nation the Town is in, which you desire to find, if you do but know the name thereof; The Maps are small yet will they do as much as reasonably can be expected in so little room: And if this find a grateful acceptance, it will encourage me to publish something else of the like kind. An Advertisement for the honest Countryman, who probably may stand in need hereof, for the understanding of the Book.  
WHereas in some places you read maps in the plural number, and in other places map in the singular number, the word Map is used when both are joined together as one (as it is best) but when 'tis bound up in a book, it is too big to be folded up in one; and therefore each part is folded up by itself, which makes two maps (the one containing England, Wales, Ireland, and pa r of Scotland; and the other all the rest of Scotland, together with the form and manner of London, Westminster, Oxford, and Edinburgh) and in this sense they are called maps.   illustration

If you be to travel to any place, for which you have no direction in this book, first find the Town in the map that you are to go from, and also the Town you are to go to; then lay a thread straight upon the map, from the one Town to the other, this thread doth show you the Towns in the nearest way, if you could travel as straight as you can look. But because the ways are generally crooked therefore you are many times enforced to go out of the straightest way, but be sure you go not far from it, for the nearer you go to that straight line, the less you go about.  
If you be to travel to any Town not named in the map, than you must learn between what two Towns named in the map the place you desire to go to stands: and (according to the distance from either of them) suppose it were placed in this map; then find your way as aforesaid, by laying your thread to that supposed place; and thus you may do if you be to travel to a place not named in the map. Thus much for the map and the use thereof   

Of the Table of the Highways.  
Forasmuch as many Country people do not understand what a Column is, which they must do before they understand the directions for the highways: I shall therefore explain the meaning thereof by an example or two; that is to say:  
Look in the 41 page, you will find the second Town thus: 1. Dulverton 16. 131. now in this example the place where 1. stands, is called the first Column, the place where Dulverton stands is the second Column, the place where 16. stands is called the third Column, and the place where 131 stands is called the fourth Column.  
In the same page look till you find 1 Chipnam, 10. 77. in this example 1. is in the first Column, Chipnam in the second, 10. in the third, and 77. in the fourth Column: and so of the rest. And now a word or two for the Almanac.  
In the use of an ordinary Almanac, these things must be known; that is to say, the year of our Lord, the month of the year, and the week of the month, else a month or week may be mistaken. Now these being known, these tables are as easy as any Almanac, after you know the Sunday Letter for the year desired: which you may easily do by the table in folio 59, and 60. Example;  
Suppose the year 1655. in the first Column you have the year 1655. in the second Column you have 3 which is the Golden Number that year, in the third Column you have g. which is the Sunday Letter that year, in the fourth Column you have 3. which is the Epact, in the fifth column you have 25. which is the number of direction for that year, by which number of direction, and by the Table of the movable feasts, the said feasts may be known for that or any other year, till 1701.   

Errata.

A KEY For the Opening or Explaining of the MAPS.  
BEfore we come to the use of the Tables, the Reader is desired to take notice that the top, the bottom, and the sides of this Map are divided into certain black & white parts; ten of which parts on the top, or on the bottom make a degree in longitude, and six of the parts on either side make a degree in latitude; which degrees are figured as well on the top as on the bottom, to show the longitude, and they are figured on either side, to show the latitude.  
And you may please to note, that every of the black and white parts, or divisions on the top and on the bottom, contain ten minutes; and each of the white and black parts, or divisions on the sides, contain six minutes, and sixty minutes make a Degree. From the beginning of every degree on the bottom, to the beginning of the same degree on the top, are lines drawn through the Map; these lines are called the lines of longitude. From every degree on the left side to the same degree on the right side, there are also Lines drawn through the Map, which are called the lines of Lat●●●●●e, as was said before. This being known, the use followeth.  

How to find out readily any Town named in the Table, with the Longitude and Latitude thereof.  
Look in the Table following, proper to that Nation or Country which the Town is in, and right against it you have the Longitude of the place in the first Column, and in the second Column you have the Latitude of the same place.  
Example. Suppose that you would find the longitude and latitude of Bedford. Look in the Alphabetical table for Bedford among the Towns in England, beginning with B. and right against it you have 20 in the first Column, which shows that Bedford is in the 20 degree of Longitude: and in the second Column you will find 52. which shows that Bedford is in the 52. degree of Latitude.  
Example. Suppose that you would find Dublin in Ireland, than you must look into the Alphabetical Table of or for Ireland, amongst the Town's beginning with the Letter D. and right against Dublin in the first Column you will find 13. which shows that Dublin is in the 13. degree of longitude; and in the second Column you have 53 which shows that Dublin is in the 53. degree of latitude; and so of the rest.   

How to find out readily in the Map, any Town named in the same.  
HAving found out by the Rules aforegoing, the longitude & latitude of the place, observe where the line of Longitude cuts the line of Latitude, and in the long square above the line of Latitude towards the right hand, you may find the Town desired.  
Example. Suppose Cambridge be desired to be found, in the Map, I find that the line of its Longitude is 20. and cuts the line of its Latitude which is 52. in the which square near the line of Longitude 21. you may find Cambridge.  
Suppose you wou●d find Chichester in the Map, you will find that the line of its Longitude is 19 and cuts the line of its Latitude, which is 50. in a place of the Sea below the Isle of Wight, marked with a little at above which, before you come at the 51. line of latitude, and towards the right hand, before you come at the 20 line of Longitude, you will find Chichester, the place desired.  
Note that when a Town happens to be in a line, it must be accounted for that degree which is figured at that line, and thus you may easily and readily find out any place named in the Map.  
Note that where you find two or more Towns of one name, you have the first Letters of the County that each Town is in.    


Hear follow the Alphabetical Tables, whereby all the Isles and Towns named in the said Maps, may easily and readily be found out, with the Longitudes and Latitudes thereof.

A Table of the Principal Roads in England and Wales, divided into three Parts.  


In the first Part, take notice, that there is belonging to each Road four Collumes.  
1 IN the first Collume against so many of the Towns written in a greater Letter as are needful, is set one of the 24 Letters in order as they be in the Alphabet, and in the same Collume against each Town written in a smaller Letter, there is some one number, as 1. 2. 3. etc. which by the directions of the second Part, readily shows you how to find any Town written in the smaller Letter in this Part.  
2 In the second Collume is set down the names of the chief Towns in each Road in order as the said Towns lie from London, beginning with the furthest Town in any Road from London, which furthest Towns are written in a bigger Letter, and are set Alphabetically for the more ready finding out of any of them.  

Example.  
Suppose you would know the way from Dover to London, look for Dover in this second Collume, amongst the Towns written in a bigger Letter (which as is said before, are set Alphabetically) and under it in the same Collume, is set Canterbury, Sittinborn, Rochester, Graves end, and Dartford, which shows that you must pass through those Towns as you go to London, and so of the rest. Note that sometimes a Road breaks off many miles before you come at London, in which case you ever have a Letter and a Number which directs you the rest of the way, as you will understand by the Second Part.  
3 In the third Collume, against every Town, in every Road, is set a number which shows the distance of miles betwixt it and the Town before it. Example: In the said Road from Dover to London, against Canterbury, in this third Collume, is 12. which shows that the distance between Dover and Canterbury is 12. miles.  
4 In the fourth Collume right against each Town is set the distance thereof from London. Example, against Dover in this fourth Collume is set 55. and against Canterbury is set 43. which shows that Dover is 55. miles. and Canterbury is 43. miles from London.    

The Use of the Second Part.  
IN this Part is set down Alphabetically all the Towns mentioned in the former Part not therein set down Alphabetically, but Printed in a smaller Letter, and to each Town in this Part, there is set a Letter and a Number, which Letter and Number if you find in the first Collume of the First Part. you may therein also find the Town desired. One Example will make all clear.  
Suppose you desire to know the way from Exeter to London: First look for Exeter in the First Part amongst the Towns Printed in a bigger Letter, and because yond find it not amongst them (which if you could do you need not to look in this Part) therefore look in this Part for Exeter, and you find Exeter in 2 now look for the same Letter and Number, viz. for M. in the first Collume of the first part, and under that M. in the same Collume, look for 2. against which 2. in the second Collume of the first part you find Exeter, and the Towns in the way from thence to London, viz. Honington, Chard, etc.  

Example.  
Suppose you would know the way from Lincoln to London: Look in this part for Lincoln, and you will find Lincoln l. 3. which directs you to look for L. in the first Collume of the first part, and for 3. under it in the same Collume, and against that 3. you shall find in the second Collume Lincoln, and under it Sleford Bourne d. 2. which d. 2. directs you to look for the rest of the Towns that you are to pass through, that is, Look for d. in the first Collume of the first part, and under it look for 2. and against 2. you find Bourne, and under Bourne you have West Deeping, Gunworthferry, Stilton b 17. which b 17. directs you to look for B in the first Collume of the First Part, and under it is 17. and against that 17. in the second Collume, is Stilton, Huntingdon, and the rest of the Towns to London. This Town is put for an example, because if you understand it, you will more easily understand other places which have fewer references.  
You may note that we go according to vulgar or common account, but in the North and West they are often long.  
The Third Part contains the Cross Roads which may easily be understood by what hath been said before. These directions will serve for the Tables of Ireland, they being done in the same manner.

Having by the former Table found the number of Direction for the year desired, find the same number in the first Collume, under the title Direction, and right against it in the Collume under the proper Titles, you have the movable Feasts for that year. Suppose I would know what day Shrove Sunday is on the year 1655. By the former Table I find the number of Direction to be 25. therefore I look for 25. in the first Collume of this Table, and right against it under the title of Shrove Sunday, I find 25. which shows that 25. of Feb. is Shrove Sunday  
Note, that every fourth year hath two Sunday Letters, because Leap year, the first of which is in use until the 24 Feb. and the other all the year after.

The Directions. Having by the former Table found the Sunday Letter, wheresoever you find that Letter in any part of this Table, it shows that day to be Sunday: and right against it towards the left hand is the day of the Month English Account: and on the right hand of it is the day of the Month foreign Account.  
Example, Suppose you would know what day of the week the 19 of Jan. 1651. By the former Table I find the Sunday Letter was e: now because the Letter e in this Table stands against the 19 day, I conclude that the 19 day was Sunday.  
Example. Suppose I would know what day of the week the first day of March 1653. was: By the former Table I find the Sunday letter to be b, now I look in the month of March against the first day, and I find d: now if b be Sunday, then c  Monday, and d is Tuesday, which shows that the first of March is Tuesday, and so of any other day or year. Note that on the right hand of any Letter in this Table is set the day of the month Foreign Account.  
Example. On the right hand of the letter g, against the 15 day of July is 25. which day is the 25. day of July according to Foreign Account. Note that there is 10. day's difference between our Account and the Foreign Account, as you will see if you observe your former directions.

How to find out the age of the Moon.  
TO do this it's necessary to know 2 numbers.  
1. The number of every month of the year, as March is the first month the number thereof is 1. April is the second month, the number whereof is 2. etc. January is the eleventh month, the number thereof is 11. February is the twelfth month, the number thereof is 12.  
2. The Epact for the year desired, which may be known by the former Table for any year mentioned therein. Note that the Epact doth not begin till March, so that the Epact for Jan. and Feb. must be the same with the year aforegoing.  
These two numbers being known, add them together, and subtract the sum from 30. the remainder is the day of the Change that month.  

Example.  
Suppose I would know what time the Moon changed in July 1654. the number of the month is 4. the Epact this year is 22. add 22 and 4 it makes 26. take 26. from 30. there remains 4. which shows that the Moon changed the 4 day of July.  
If the two numbers make above 30. look how much it is above 30. and take so much from 30. and then the remainder is the day of the change.  
If the month have but 30 days in it, you must take the remainder from 29.

By this Table, knowing the price of one pound of any thing, you may know how much the hundred weight (being 112. pound) comes to: or having bought any thing by the hundred weight, you may know how to retail it by the pound. If one pound of any thing cost 4 pence 3 farthings, than a hundred weight of the same commodity will cost 2 l. 4 s. 4 d. Likewise if a hundred weight of any thing cost 4 l. 6 s. 4 d. the price of one pound will cost 9 d. q. The like may be done for any other; but if your commodity come to above 1 s. 6 d. the pound, you may do it by half of the price, or else reckon first for the 1 s. 6 d. and after for all the rest.

Lastly 1. Almanac in a Royal sheet for fifty years, with the Pictures of the 4 Seasons, the 7 Planets, the 7 liberal Sciences, the 4 times of the d●y the 4 Elements about it, the which is useful for gentlemen's, and Scholars Studies, Tradesmens Shops, and the Countreymans' house.  
Though these only are named, yet he hath divers others, and purposeth more, as time and opportunity will admit.  
He hath choice of Dutch things likewise.

Reader, If you would know the distance of any place herein, you must first know the Scale of miles, and that the small space of White therein is one mile and the black another, and so you will see what the Whole or any part thereof is, Then take a Payr of Compasses and Measure from the one place to the other that you would know the distance of As suppose you would know how far it is from London to North-Hampton you must set one point of your Compass in the round spot of London, and the other into the like spot in North-hampton, and then Carry your Compass to the Scale of Miles and you will see that it is: 52: Miles, but if it should be more Miles than the Scale is long than you may take: 50: and Widen or lessen your compass as you see cause and then try by the Scale, but withal carry your eye and hand and directly from place to place in takeing distances as you can, so you have the Just distance of any place.
