Resolved upon the Question, by the Lords, Knights, Gentry and Commons, now in arms for his Majesty, and the laws. THAT His Majesty shall be no longer held as a Prisoner in the Isle of Wight: That the Rogue HAMMOND his Majesties devilish Jaylor be hanged; and His Majesty speedily come to London. Resolved upon the Question. THAT all Committee men bee set apart for the gallows, all excise men for the Gallies, and all their petty-fogging Messengers for the whipping Post. Die 25. july, 1648. Ordered by the Lords, Knights, and Gentry aforesaid, that these Propositions, with the Ordinance and Resolution, be forthwith Printed and published, and red by all loyal Subjects, John loyal Cleric. Angl. Printed in the year 1648. Propositions to be presented to his Majesty, &c. YOur Majesty hath had so long and so dear experience of the treacheries, cruelties, and oppressions of those Rebels at Westminster, who call themselves a Parliament, that wee need not lay before your Majesty, the evil consequence of their pernicious practices, or strive with far fetched Oratory, to dissect their devilish devices; we therefore shall proceed in all humbleness, prostrating ourselves at your Majesties feet, to implore your gracious acceptance and consideration, of these following Propositions, which we know will prove most profitable to your Majesty, your posterity and friends. First, wee humbly desire your Majesty to call to mind that the Rebels( by the permission of God for the sins of this Nation) having overcome & subdued your forces, & having bought your person of the Scots, notwithstanding that by their Covenant they had solemnly protested, that they took not up arms against your Majesty, or in contempt of your just power, but to redeem you out of their hands who were Yours and the kingdoms enemies; and that done to elevate your throne much higher then all your ancestors, and to make you the most great and glorious Prince in the world; yet when they had achieved their intentions, had quiter beaten your friends, and had your person at their own disposing, they quiter forgot what they had so solemnly protested, and in stead thereof became studious which way to put your Majesty from all your privileges and possessions, to alter the fundamental laws of the Land, and to set up a perfect Anarchy. For the effecting of which, they underhand dealt with some chief Officers in the Army, to betray your person into the Isle of Wight, yet so that the people might imagine it as your own wish; which done, and your majesty clapped up close prisoner, the same condition that you are now( in a maner) in, they proceeded to make themselves a State, and for that purpose they openly declared in print, that they would no longer repose trust in your Majesty, as being the murderer of your father, and a contriver of the ruin of your people: that therefore they would( for the future) have nothing to do with you, neither make any addresses to you, or receive any letter from you, but of themselves would settle the kingdom. But then being arrived at the height of their mischief, and imagining the people were so perfectly infatuated, that they would have sat still like creatures void of understanding, and have suffered themselves and posterity to bee for ever enslaved, they began to declare themselves altogether in their own name, your Majesty never mentioned, to appropriate to themselves all your Majesties power, and in all things to make themselves as absolute as the States of Holland; and they had certainly performed their intents, to the utter ruin of your Majesty your posterity, and subjects, had it not pleased God mercifully to look upon us, and to illuminate the eyes of the people, who on a sudden became sensible of their own wretched estate, and withall resolute to hazard their lives for the regayning of their liberties, your Majesties subjects of Kent, beginning the first example, and now at present the whole Nation, being all upon rising: neither did it please God, that only upon the Land these bloody Rebels should find unwonted opposition but also upon the Sea, in regard your Majesties best Ships( formerly in their possession) are revolted from them: your Majesties son his Highnesse the Duke of york, and also your Majesties subjects of Scotland, being now entred into England, for the service of your Majesty with a great Army both of horse and foot, who are now already joined with other your subjects in the North: Castles. Forts, Cities, and towns, being daily ceased upon for your Majesty: now that they perceive the people are so in love with monarchical government, and the sweet blessing of of Peace, under a peaceful and Righteous King, having found by experience that without your Majesty be possessed of government, they are no longer a free people, but open to the outrageous injunctions of Rebells and Traytors; therefore now they can no longer share the crown, they are contented that your Majesty have it entire; whereas the world knows that if they could any longer have supported their usurped power, your Majesty should have been kept prisoner till the day of your death if perhaps their fears would have permitted them to have spared your life, and not to have made you away by poison, or otherwise, as they lately attempted, by their Hellish instrument Rolfe) your children kept out of the Land by armed men, and themselves have commanded the lives and estates of the people at their pleasures. We therefore humbly beseech your Majesty to behold this their forced submission, with a stern and rigid eye, and to esteem of them no otherwise, but as men beaten to a treaty, yours and the kingdoms implacable Enemies, and therefore utterly uncapable of any trust for the future. Secondly, we beseech your Majesty so to respect your own Person, and the glory of your famed, as not to suffer yourself to be brought up to London as a Pageant, a May-game for the Sectaries to behold and laugh at, and then to be returned back to your Cell, and to be cloistered up more strictly then before; for let your Majesty know that the citizens of London have already agreed, that in case your Majesty shall not make up an agreement with the Rebells, they will not secure your person from them, but will deliver you up to be again disposed of according to their wisdoms( their very words) the nature of their disposal we know your Majesty cannot but imagine. To prevent the manner of which Tyrannicall mock Treaty, we humbly beseech your Majesty( since they must be constrained to come to composition will they nill they) before you assure them that you deign to treat, to have the Militia, and Navy( we mean those that have not yet declared for you) restored unto your command, new Officers Chosen, whom you by the advice of your friends shall nominate, and they anew to take the Oath of allegiance and supremacy, that so your Majesty may treat with safety, and like yourself, and not be as you have been hitherto, a mock and derision to your enemies, who fat themselves with yours, and your Subjects ruins. Thirdly, that ere your Majesty condescend to treat, you will please, that your Wife our sovereign Lady, and most gracious queen Mary, your son his highnesse the Prince of Wales, and the rest of your loyal friends beyond the Seas, who have this many yeares been kept from the enjoyment of their own by the perfidiousness of the Rebells at Westminster, and to the immortal infamy of this Nation have been suffered to live upon the alms of strangers, be called home again, your Wife to your bosom, your son to your tuition, and your friends to your counsel, that so you may return in full lustre, and be a peace-maker in as much glory as your Ancestors. Fourthly, that all those who have survived the fury of the Rebels, as well the Lords spiritual( who contrary to the fundamental laws of the Land, were outed the house, and their voice in Parliament taken away) as the Lords temporal, and those loyal ones of the communality, who either deserted the Rebels, as foreseing their intents, or were violently expulsed for denying to join with them in their treasonable and destructive undertakings, may be restored to their places in Parliament, that so your Majesty may not be exposed to the inevitable inconveniences, that will else assuredly happen, or be destitute of a party equivolent to the Rebells, that so in case( which if any attempt with safety can perform shall be surely effected) that the Treaty should not be prevalent, your Majesty may be in a condition to dissolve this old Rebellious( and indeed onely by name, and not in substance) Parliament, and may according to your wonted power, command the convening of another, who may declare all their mischievous Orders null and void, and restore this kingdom to its ancient and excellent form of Government. These our desires being so consonant to your Majesties, and this kingdoms happiness, as that without the punctual performance of them, neither your Majesty, or this kingdom can expect any future tranquillity, but still to be involved in domestic debates, and never dying miseries, so long as there shal be two in a family, or till England become another Golgotha▪ wee beseech your Majesty to take into your serious consideration, and to adhere to them as the only means for your own, your posterity and peoples safety. AN ORDINANCE OF THE LORDS, Knights, Gentry, and Commons of England, now in Arms, for the redemption of his Majesty out of Prison, and the recovery of their laws and Liberties, and to bring the Rebels at Westminster and their abettors, to condign punishment. WHereas wee have found by many yeares experience, that those at Westminster( who fit and vote without his Majesties assent, and whom he hath proclaimed to bee Rebels and Traytors to his crown and Dignity, as appears by many Declarations yet extant) have convened and assembled themselves together, under pretence to reform abuses, and yet permit all maner of enormities, and tolerate all maner of murders, massacres, plunders, and outrages, to the apparent ruin and inevitable destruction of the Nation( if not timely prevented) We the Lords, Knights, and Gentlemen now in arms for the redemption of his Majesties person out of captivity, and for the recovery of our laws and Liberties, do order and ordain, That from henceforth the Rebels at Westminster, who audaciously call themselves a Parliament, shall no more bee distinguished by that name, but termed on all occasions by the fit and due epithets of Traytors, Rebels, and destroyers of their Nation and Country: and we do hereby decree and ordain, and be it ordained and decreed, by the King our sovereign Lord, the Lords, Knights, Gentry and Commons now in arms, for the purchasing of their lost freedoms, that whosoever shall join or yield assistance to those pernicious and bloud-sucking Rebels at Westminster, either by person or purse, so to obstruct the speedy settlement of the kingdom, are Traytors and Rebels by the laws of God, and the laws of the Land, and shall be so looked upon, their estates confiscate, and themselves punished with death. And it is further decreed and ordained by the Kings Majesty our sovereign Lord, and the Lords, Knights, and Gentlemen, now in arms, That his Majesty bee speedily fetched out of the Isle of Wight, where he remaines as a prisoner in Carisbrooke Castle, and bee brought to his Palace at Westminster, with ringing of Bells, bonfires, and all sorts of triumph and joy. Tom Tell Troth Cleric. Resolved upon the Question. That his gouty Excellency Sir Thomas Fairfax, shalbe sent prisoner to the Tower as a traitor, and that Mr. Warn●r the mock Mayor of London accompany him. Resolved upon the Question. That the Rebels at Westminster, who call themselves the Lower house, be each of them sent to Newgate, there to remain without bail or mainprize, till the King shall be settled in his Throne, and then summoned to a trial by Justice. Resolved upon the Question. That every Tub preacher be searched out, and when discovered, each to be set upright in his hollow vessel, then to bee surrounded with billets, faggots, and other combustible matter, and they fired about him, and the fire kept together till he burn to ashes. Resolved upon the Question. That the Reverend Bishops and Fathers of the Church bee restored each to his See, and former Dignity: that the Common Prayer and Divine Service be again red in all Churches. That the Organs be again erected in Saint Pauls Temple, and all other cathedrals: That the surplice, and the other decent garments be again worn by the Ministers and Curates: and that his Majesty be prayed for, his queen, Posterity, and well-wishers in all Congregations. FINIS.
