GENTLEMEN, I Doubt not but most are sensible, that through the Booksellers Care and Diligence, in Collecting Choice Books, and exposing them to Sale by way of Auction; many are not only furnished with what they desire, at easy Rates; but save themselves much trouble in a tedious and fruitless search, and enquiry after those Books, which are not at all times to be had in Booksellers Shops, but perhaps are such as are only found in the private Studies, or Libraries of the most Curious Collectors, by whose Decease, they often fall into the hands of those that will expose them at a public Sale. And by this means, the Market lies equally fair to all; every one being at his own Liberty, to bid as he thinks worthy and Convenient, and the Conditions of Sale; such that no injury can be done to the Bidder or Buyer: As for the Books containing in this Catalogue, they are such as are helpful and conducing to the Improvement of Arts and Sciences, or what else relates to Learning, or good Instruction, Profitable and Pleasant; most of them new and well Bound: In short we refer you to a perusal of the Catalogue, or view of the Auction; only must take leave to affirm, that this Auction is as exactly furnished with Sundry Varieties, as any that has preceded it, and therefore we do not question, but it will give as good Content, and Satisfaction to Ingenious Persons of all degrees, in that it contains those Books that may be suitable to all Professions, or Capacities, and as nothing ought to be more desired and sought after, than the Knowledge of what may turn to advantage; so it cannot be sooner obtained, then by the Studiously Consulting the Works of those, who by unwearied Study Labour and Industry, have left the Effects thereof for the Benefit of Posterity: In fine, certain it is, that in this Collection, such Variety is afforded that how wellsoever any Gentleman's Study is Furnished; he may find somewhat useful to add to its further Eminency, and Perfection, as well to his own Improvement and Advancement in Learning. Great indeed has the care been in furnishing this Auction; that the Bookseller might find Encouragement, in Obliging those Gentlemen, whose Study it is, to render our Nation, as Illustrious for Scholars and men of learning, as any other can challenge in the World. The Conditions of Sale, are these: 1. THAT he who Bids most is the Buyer; and if any Difference arise, which the Company cannot decide, than the Book or Books shall be exposed to Sale again. 2. That all the Books in this Catalogue, not otherwise expressed (for aught we know) are perfect; but if any of them appear to be otherwise before they be taken away, the Buyer shall have his Choice of taking or leaving them. 3. That the Money for the Book or Books so Bought, is to be Paid within Four day after the Sale is ended, at the place where they are Sold, where, upon Payment thereof, the Book or Books shall be there Delivered.
