An epistle exhortatory, admonishing an warning all faithful Christians to beware of the false feigned God of the altar, and only to trust in the only living God. ¶ Ihon. iiii. ¶ O Ye worship ye wots not what we know what we worship. THat same spirit (dear brethren) which moved S. Paul to reprove the citizens of Athens for their idolatry, Act. xvii. Act. 17. c. hath also moved us to warn you by the Scriptures of the same offence specially in worshipping that unknown God on the altar, which thing you do ignorantly, and therefore we certify and assure you by this present. three Ro. 8. d i. par. vi. c Esay. ●6. a Act. xii. f Herald br. ix. c That God which made the world, and all that therein is, dwelleth not in temples made with hands: neither is he daily offered upon your conjured altars. Hebr. 9 c For than should he oft have suffered sins the world begun. Hebr. 9 e But that did he once for all, when he offered up himself. and with that only sacrifice hath he made parfet for ever all them that are sanctified. Hebr seven d Hebr 10 e But now to our purpose, seeing, Christ is not in your Churches made with hands (as these foresaid scriptures will witness unto you) how can you avoid idolatry in giving that worship to an earthly thing, which is only due unto god? is not bread Turrian erthli thing? & hath not the hands of sinners made and fashioned it for your purpose? why do you than worship it? And if you say it is no substance of bread. But the likeness thereof after the consecration (which is a blasphemouselye) what win you by that? For God said you shall not worship the likeness of any thing in heaven or earth. Exo 10 a Deut. v a But here peraventure some wilier than his fellows, will say, we neither worship the substance of bread nor the likeness of bread, but we worship Chryst contained in the bread. To answer this viper's whelp, we say that the natural body of Chryst is neither contained in the bread, in the church nor in the hole earth as we have proved before, neither willeth he to be worshipped in bread nor wine, but in spirit and truth, John iiii c Neither can ye worship Christ where he is not, but where he is, that is in Heaven. For that same natural body which Christ took of the virgin marry, which suffered death, which rose again which ascended into heaven, sitteth now on the right hand of his father, & if you will not believe us herein, search these scriptures following. Might not these if you were men and not beasts, persuade you to the truth & cause your conscious to confess the abominable idolatry with earnest repentance for the same: Oh ye fools and slow of heart to believe the scriptures. Luc 24 c If we say the truth why do you not believe us? John viii Oh ye children of the devil will you never cease to pervert the strait ways of the lord? Act ● b Will you still say that you have Chryst, John 1● a and he saith you have me not? Will you still say that Chryst is daily offered among you, Hebr seven d and Saint Paul saith he was offered but ones for all? will you still say he is in the box and the holy ghost saith he is in heaven? Will you still worship the dead works of your hands in stead of the living God? Oh ye foolish Samaritans will you still worship ye wots not what, & seek Chryst ye wots not where? did not christ himself reprove your country woman for this vain worshipping, saying: John iiii a Neither on this mountain nor yet at jerusalem the true worshippers worship my father, for the hour is come and now is, that the true worshippers shall worship only in spirit and verity? And therefore saith Paul. ●ama ● a two Tit a I thank God whom I worship and serve in my spirit & in a pure conscience Loo, S. Paul saith not that he worshipped God in bread, wine, or in any other creature but in spirit and truth, as his master had taught him before. Now will we show you the effect and fruit of your wise worshipping and so conclude. The effect is vain. The fruit sin and damnation: vain is the effect. Because it is but only the vain doctrine and tradition of men, which thing christ himself confirmeth. saying: In vain do ye worship me teaching the doctrines and traditions of men. Math 15 a The fruit that followeth the doing is sin, as thus. J●● 10 b S. Paul proveth the only word of God to be the ground of faith. But this false worshipping is not grounded ●n the word of God. Ergo it cannot be done of faith wherefore we conclude with Paul that it is sin, Rom 14 for whatsoev is not done of faith is sin. And without faith it is impossible to please God. Alas saith Esay, Hebr two Esay 46 that men should cry unto him which giveth none answer, Sapi 13. d or pray for life unto a dead thing. Is not your God a dead thing? or tell us what answer giveth he when you cry unto him? doth not the owls & swallows, cats, rats & mice, fly & run over & about your God, like as they do with other idols? Baen vi c By this might you know saith jeremy that it is no God. Yea, do not rats & mice devour & eat your God? & time consum & putrefy your God? But what you do with him after, few men may know. Shall the natural body of Chryst which was the only price of our redemption be eaten of rats or mice? Or may time consume the high priest which remaineth for ever Oh ye priests of Bell, Hebre 〈◊〉 be once ashamed of your lying, for truly if Daniel may once speak freely with the king, he will bewray your false juggling. That it may be so & that shortly we pray. Let no man judge us that we any thing herein derogate the holy supper of Christ, for that we most highly esteem as the perfect memorial of our redemption and most necessary food of our souls. Cor xii 10 Eating and drinking therein the very body & blood of Chryst even as our fathers did. But we only warn & reach you that theridamas should be no strange God among you. Esa. xiiii c And that you should turn from these vain things unto the living God. Act 14. c To whom alone be all honour and glory. Amen.
