AN EPItome of the Psalms, or brief meditations upon the same, with diverse other most christian prayers, translated by Richard Taverner. Cum privilegio ad imprimendum solum. 1539 TO THE MOST MIGHTY, and most redoubted price HENRY the. VIII. King of England and of France Defensor of the Faith, lord of Ireland, and in earth supreme head immediately under CHRIST of the church of England, his most humble servant Richard Taverner desireth all felicity, joy and increase of lawful posterity. PLease it your excellent Majesty to understand, that where as, more than three years passed, my very good lord and old master my lord Privy seal for such qualities as he thought to have espied in me (which I myself nevertheless acknowledge not) preferred and delivered me up unto your grace's service, and sithence that time, to th'intent he would make me the more able & meet to serve your highness in my calling, hath enured me with diverse translations and other exercises: So it is most gracious and most redoubted sovereign lord, that amongs other things, he hath committed this book of prayers to my penning & translating into the English tongue. The self prayers, no doubt, be excellent, pure, sincere, godly & Christian. But my translation, I fear, is rude, base, unpleasant, gross, and barbarous. I fear, I say, lest according to the proverb I shall tender pro aureis ferrea, lest of good latin I have made evil English, lest I have turned wine into water. My courage & good will is much, th'expectation of mine old Maecenas is of me great, finally the celsitude of your majesty requireth no base thing. But I am sore afraid that mine industry herein employed shall answer nether to your majesties most royal dignity, nether to my said lords expectation, nether yet to mine own good will & desire. Nevertheless how so ever my translation is (for unto your majesties most exact judgement & censure as unto another Aristarchus I most humbly submit it) certes the incomparable benignity of your most gracious person, hath impelled me with a bold spirit to offer and dedicate the fruits of these my labours unto the same, to th'intent that under the most noble patrociny of your royal name, the book may the more plausibly and greedily be devoured of your loving subjects. Truth it is, that my poor degree & baseness of condition is far unmeet to offer any thing unto your most excellent highness. Howbeit, if heathen kings have very thankfully received of their subjects hands, Pome granates, handfuls of water, and such other trifling things, esteeming rather the prompt and ready will of the givers, than the price of the things given, if also Christ himself our mighty shepherd (whose vicar for the church & realm of England your majesty is recognized) not only accepted but also preferred the two minutes of the poor widow afore the precious oblations of the rich personages, I doubt not, but your majesty being a christian King and such a king, will not ingratelye receive at your humble servants hand, these his simple lucubrations which tend to the high benefit, edification, and commodity of your grace's people. But lest with my loquacity I might be an impediment unto your most serious occupations, I make an end. The God of peace and of consolation grant, that like as your highness most like unto the godly king Ezechias earnestly go about the perfect instauration of the true religion and th'advancement of god's glory, all false religion destroyed: so he will vouchsafe, to send you the thing that the most wise king Solomon esteemed for the sweetest and best portion of man's life, and for a treasure inestimable, that is to wite, a prudent and wise lady to your majesties wife and to our your most addict subjects Queen, which according to the voice of the prophet, may be as a fruitful vine in your majesties house, furnished with children like olive branches round about your grace's table. For lo thus shall the man be blessed (sayeth he) which feareth the Lord. What shall we say? God hath already heard our most ardent vows and petitions. This lady most excellent is prepared of thalmighty for your majesty, she is in journey ready to be transported into your grace's realm. The God of spirits mought so tempre and breathe the weather and so graciously conduct her in her journey, as she may most happily arrive at the time desired into your grace's presence, to the full contentation of your hearts desire, to the plausible expectation of your grace's subjects, and finally to the true honour and glory of almighty God. For the accomplishment whereof, we all with one accord mought pour out these prayers following & semblable to the Lord of all. Amen. Domine saluum fac Regem. ❧ A General Confession of sins unto God, daily to be said of the christian person. O Most merciful lord god, and most tender & dear father, vouch safe I heartily beseech thee, to look down with thy fatherly eyen of pity upon me most vile & wretched sinner, which lie here prostrate before the feet of thy bottomless mercy. For I have sinned against the throne of thy glory & before the o father, in so much that I am no more worthy to be called thy son. Nevertheless, forasmuch as thou art the god & father of all comfort, and again desirest not the death of the sinner, but like a true Samaritane takest thought of my silly wounded soul: make me I pray thee, by infounding thy precious oil of comfort into my wounds joyfully to run with the lost son unto the lap of thine everlasting pity. For lo, thou art my hope, and trust in whom I only repose myself having in the full confidence and faith, and so I say with very heart. I believe in the o god the father, in the o god the son and in the o god the holy ghost, three persons and one true and very god, beside whom I knowledge none other god in heaven above nor in earth beneath. Yea and I accuse myself unto thee, dear father, that I have grievously offended thy almighty goodness and majesty in the committing of mine abundant and manifold sins. For I have not kept the least of thy most godly commandments like as thy righteousness may demand the same of me. I have (I say) not honoured thee, like my god, dread thee, like my lord, loved the like my father, trusted in the like my creator and saviour. Thy holy and dreadful name, unto whom all glory and honour belongeth, have I used in vain. I have not sanctified the holy days which works which be acceptable unto thee, nor instructing my neighbour in virtue accordingly. I have not honoured my parents nor bene obedient unto them through whom (as by an instrument) thou hast wrought my coming into this world. The high powers and rulers which take their authority of thee, I have not been willingly obedient unto. I have not kept my heart pure from manslaughter, yea had not thy grace defended me the better, I should have committed the very deed also. In like wise I am not pure from theft, from adultery, from false witness bearing, but have in my heart wished and desired my neighbour's goods and things. I have followed the prince of this world Satan (which hath been a liar from the beginning) in concupiscence of the flesh, in pride of living, in lying, in deceitfulness, in lechery, in hatred and envy, in backbiting, in despair and misbelieve. My five wits have I foully misspent, in hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting and feeling, which thou hast given me to use unto thy honour & to the edification and profit of my neighbour. But in what manner so ever that I have offended and sinned against thy majesty (for noman knoweth thoroughly his sins as thy prophet witnesseth) whither it hath been by day or by night even from my childhod unto this day were it in wordis, works or thought secretly or openly, my merciful god, I am sorry for it, even from the very bottom of my heart. Yea my soul mourneth for sorrow most merciful father that I am not a thousand times soryer than I am. Howbeit in token of repentance (though all hearts be known well enough unto thee) I knock and strike my breast and say in bitterness of soul. Lord god father have mercy, Lord god son have mercy, lord god holy ghost have mercy. Spare me of thine infinite mercy dear lord now and at the days of my life, & let me have part of thine abundant grace, so as I may change my sinful life and put out of me the old man with all his evil concupiscence, and also that I may die unto the world, and that the world may be unto me a cross, and so go forth in a new life. Strengthen me (o lord) in a true humble heart, in perfect love, hope, and trust in the. give my soul the grace to desire the only, in the only to rejoice and repose myself, and the I may utterly renounce and forsake the vain affiance of this world, so that thou mayst find me ready with the good servant in the midnight of my death, which shall suddenly steal upon me like a thief ere I be ware. Be thou unto me at that time of need o lord a tour of strength a place of refuge, and a defensable god namely against the face of the fiend, who like a roaring lion shallbe then most ready to devour me and against desperation which then shall be busy to grieve me. Let then thy comfort cleave fast unto me, thy mercy keep me, and thy grace guide me. Fetch then again, Lord god father, that which thy puissant might hath shapen. Fetch then again lord son that which thou hast so wisely governed & bought with thy precious blood. Take again then, lord holy ghost, that which thou haste kept and preserved so lovingly in this region of sin and vale of misery, three persons and one very god, unto whom be praise and honour for ever and ever. AMEN. ❧ THE EPITOME OF PSALMS TRANSLATED BY RICHARD TAVERNER. A prayer for true Godliness. PSALM. I. O LORD god and father, I beseech thee, by Christ our lord, that of thine infinite mercy thou keep me, so as at no time I follow the counsels either of the wicked, which know the not, or of hypocrites which with heart seek the not, and that I enter not in the way of sinners with a mind to fulfil the desires and works of the flesh: But rather when so ever through frailty of this old and corrupt nature I shall chance to run astray (as no man is void of sin) thou wilt cause me to stay and pluck my foot back again. Keep me that I sit not in the seat of pestilent scorners, which cloaking their pharisaical and devilish intentes condemn in other men thy verity and gospel. Go to, bring to pass by thy holy spirit that I may bren in desire of thy law, that upon th'advancement of thy word my mind may always be occupied, that I may evermore choose that is most pleasant to thee, and hate that, both in myself and in other, which to the is displeasant. Make, I pray thee, that I may be a tree planted by the sweet rivers of ghostly waters, to the intent I may bring forth fruit to thy glory and profit of my neighbour, as often as thou shalt minister time and occasion thereunto, lest my leaves, that is, my words and works should fade & fall away, but that all things may prosper, whatsoever I shall do in thy name. Assist me I pray thee, that I may take rote in the ground of life, lest with the ungodly like chaff and dust I be blown abroad by the most pernicious wind of this world. And grant that I may stand in the judgement and in the assembly of the righteous, that I may enter into judgement without punishment, and escape everlasting damnation. Amen. For the true knowledge of Christ. psalm. 2. Lord if at any time for thy name's sake this world shall furiously trouble me, then with patience and strength of spirit, arm thou me, and be thou at hand, that I may burst the bands and counsels of the ungodly, and cast away that unfruitful yoke of the sinful conscience and fear of damnation, which evils thou o lord that haste thy residence in heaven dost scorn. Grant that I may stand fast in the statutes and precepts of thy son our lord jesus Christ, which be honest studies to help my neighbour, proceeding of faith unfeigned (the which jesus thou haste proclaimed king over Zion thy holy hill, that is, amongs the faithful christians) so as he only may rule me, by the spirit of his mouth, which to that intent was made thy son in time appointed, that thou the father shouldest adopt and choose me into thine eternal heritage, by whom now I am partaker of thy kingdom and coheyre with him. Grant lord, that I may with true awe ever more serve thee, but not with the false and feigned service of the world neither yet constreynedly, but of a frank spirit and sincere truth, obeying nevertheless to all temporal power and human ordinances, while they be not against thy word, that I may attain unto the unspeakable joy of thy promises for thy words sake, not doubting of my salvation, and that I may lovingly obey thy fatherly chastisement, for surely sharpness of correction maketh that we lose not the way of troth. Ah good god give me grace that in thee, I may continually and fastly hope, and of the look for all things by Christ our lord. So be it. A common prayer to the lord for help in adversity. psalm. 3. Forasmuch as many (o Lord) rise maliciously against me, and say within themselves, there is surely no health to be looked for from god unto this fellow, take thou me up I pray thee, be thou my shield, and my succour, and replenish thou me with true glory in thy sight, to the intent I may boast of the and be joyful with a careless heart. hearken unto me from thy holy hill, as oft as I cry unto thee: make me not to fear, yea though thousands of men stand against me. I come running unto thee, not trusting to mine own righteousness, but to thine unspeakable mercy, & towards thy holy temple I shall address myself to worship the with all reverence and fear. Lord with the rule of thy justice thou shalt direct me for thy name's sake, thou shalt make plain thy way before me, and my way before thee, least the spirit of malice turn me thence. Let them rejoice which repose themselves and trust always in thy succour, let them sing hymns & psalms, which do glory and rejoice of thee, let them triumph which love thy name. In adversity for the comfort of the holy ghost. psalm. 6. Lord in thy wrath reprove me not, neither in the heat of thy mind chasten me, but rather pacify and assuage my troubled spirit and have compassion on me, for I am sore diseased. For these ungodly people which be evermore snapping against us, think thou haste no kingdom to govern, whereas it is certain thou hast received all power of thy father, and art always present in men's doings. Arise up lord, put forth thine hand, forget not thy wretched servants, which canst not but see, what wretchedness and woe is every where, specially amongs us, which refer all unto thee, & dare not once wish any thing after our own will and pleasure, thou (I say) art the helper of the poor and friendless. What person (O lord) thoroughly knoweth his privy faults and secret dissimulation? Take out of me as much as remaineth of the old Adam, keep me thy servant (o lord) from these arrogant and proud men, and such as go about to exempt themselves from thy true church, so as they reign not in mine heart thorough their hypocrisy and feigned holiness, and that I assent not to their seditious minds. So shall I be pure and clean from these horrible sins, rebellion, grudging, shrinking from thy testament, blasphemies of heart. Cheer me with thy pleasant countenance and with thy wholesome gift of repentance. Make me continue strongly for thy goodness O thou that art above all. Arise Lord, show thy might, let the world feel thy power, set aloft Christ's kingdom, the kingdom of spirit & life, the kingdom of the true innocency, and righteousness of God, destroy the adversaries hereof. Thou drewest me forth of my mother's womb, and haste preserved me unto this day. Of thy bounty & mercy (which I beseech the deny me not at this my need) go not away from me, for anguish and pensyffenes of heart draw nigh unto me, and yet is there none that can help me, but thou only. Let me escape from these dangers through thy Christ my saviour who for my sake hath suffered so spytfull and bitter pains, who for me was sore vexed, cruelly scourged, wounded, nailed, hanged on the cross. Let me escape I say for his bloods sake, which he so largely shed for us to cause us obtain forgiveness of our sins, and enjoy the new and everlasting covenant made between the and us. Despise not the prayers of the poor, turn not away thy face, hear my cry, for I will record this thy goodness among the miserable, distressed & troublesome consciences, that they thereof may take heart of comfort, grow in hope, cleave more fervently unto thee, and may blow abroad thy most glorious name, and give the their hearty thanks for their salvation. Amen. For increase of faith in God. Psalm. 23. Lord, my shepherd, feed me thy poor catyfe sheep, then shall I lack nothing, let me lie in the feeding grounds of thy plenteous word, nigh unto the pleasant rivers of thy holy spirit, that I may be refreshed, and bow to thy correction & providence. Turn my soul unto thee, and cool it with thy sweet liquors when with sorrow it beginneth to bren, conduct me to the path of righteousness for thy name's sake, and if I shall happen to walk in the valley of darkness and death, be thou present with me, that I may fear nothing at all. The staff of thy word mought bear me up, and I shall take comfort of it, spread the board of thy word before me, and I will feed of it to strengthen and fortify my mind against all Satan's powers, so as none of his soldiers shall vaynquyshe me. Anoint my head till it be fat with the oil of gladness and hallowing of spirit. Make me drunk with thy cup, that I may forget myself, & utterly renounce mine own dreams and righteousness, to th'intent only thy spirit may reign within me. Let thy gracious mercy never leave me in all this life, & let me abide continually in thine house, a sheep enclosed in thy fold within the hurdles of thy grace and gifts, which art the high and mighty shepherd and granter of all good things. Amen. For grace to renew the hearts. Psalm. 24. Renew me, shape me again (O Lord) for thine is the world and all that is therein, that I may be able to climb up unto thy mount, to abide in thine holy city, to receive at thy hands health, blessing, mercy, and righteousness. Let me be as a person new borne of thee, let me ensearch the alway. O Christ, king of glory, have thou an everlasting reign in me, for thou art strong enough, thou art puissant & mighty in battle, and Lord of hosts, yea let the bounds and limits of thy kingdom stretch through the world. Cause all men to do their homage and suit unto thee, as to the most glorious conqueror of sin, death, and hell. Amen. To be admitted one of God's flock. Psalm. 25. Lord remember not my faults and mysdemenours, which from my childhod I have committed one upon another's neck, neither call thou to remembrance my stony dullness, and blind ignorance, but rather think on thy tender mercy which thou hast continued towards those that thou haste chosen from the beginning of the world, neither is there any man that can stop the from thine accustomed wont. Wherefore I beseech thee, that I also may be partaker of thy gracious goodness, according to the depth of thy mercy, for thou (Lord) art righteous and good, therefore thou canst not but warn sinners, when they wander from thy way, that they once taught by thy spirit should walk in spirit and truth, and return from wylsomnes. doubtless Lord thy ways be good and faithful, of thy mere kindness thou dost promise, & thy promise thou keepest faithfully to all such as keep the conditions of thy covenant) I mean the ten commandments) and whose hearts desire is set in the and in thy words both day and night. All godly, honest, true hearted, and righteous persons will the same that I will, and make request unto the for the same, I mean, that we might be delivered from the gross darkness of our heart. Assuredly it came only of thy goodness, that hitherto I fell not away from the company of the godly, that yet daily I look for aid from thee, and that I continued after a manner in this trade of good living. And this thy will by all the prophets was afore declared. This Christ thy son hath taught us thy righteousness (by which through thy gracious favour we be justified) and hath openly at the time appointed performed the thing that long afore was showed to the fathers under shadows and figures which be now passed & brought to an end, neither dost thou now require of us any other thing, but that in thy son we be whole given, offered, sanctified, and consecrate unto the. Oh what aileth the my soul? what thing troubleth thee? what toylest thou? what rennest thou hither and thither? See thou trust in the Lord, to whom shortly (be thou right well assured,) I shall have cause to render most loving thanks for my delivery received at his hands, according as himself hath commanded, that in wealth & prosperity we should praise his clemency and bountiful goodness the worker thereof, and again in adversity we not forgetting his promises, should pray for help. In likewise thou haste made us heirs of the heavenly country, not of our desert, but of thy pure grace whom, in Christ afore the world was made thou chase. Wherefore to the we own of right to render continual thanks. But now thou hast also driven us forth in such wise as we be a reproach & mocking stock to the ungodly paynims, which count us unworthy whom the earth should bear, who do grievously vex & torment us both in body and mind. They think to please the by the slaughter of us. What shall we attempt to do being thus environed with tribulations? Lord govern us in truth, mildness, & justice Let thy right hand work miracles for thy seat is eternal, thy sceptre is judgement, power, justice, and direction, thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness. Therefore thy father took the up to be king anointed with the oil of gladness, I mean the holy ghost afore thy fellows the believers, and membres of thy body. Prudentely thou dost declare and testify that of our goods and sacrifices thou hast no need, & thou dost not either regard or measure them, for all be thine, and in the it lieth to make the things we now possess to be ours or not ours. This my knowledging of the truth, I wot well is right acceptable unto thee, where as in the most part of other persons thou hast either hid the same or made it unknown. Purge and sprinkle me with the blood of jesus Christ thine unspotted lamb. If thou wash me, I shallbe as white as snow, so shall I receive these glad tidings into my heart, that my sins be forgiven. replenish my bones with the joy of spirit, which now, considering thy sharp judgements be all to shaken and bruised. For my spirit is stricken into a deadly dompe, and therefore my bones be dried up. Turn away thy face from my sins, and then for joy of thy favourable forgiveness I shall forget them. Mine own proper works Lord examine not roughly, which (I confess) be nothing but sins. Yea if thou lay them to my charge as I have deserved, I must needs abide the child of damnation. Thine unspeakable mercy with humble prayer I demand and crave upon thee, which thou hast promised, saying: His sins I will not remember. Do away therefore my sins. A clean heart (my god) make in me, restore in me a willing and right spirit. banish me not from thy sight blind not mine eyes. Let not an vacant heart grow in me, neither let me despair on thy goodness Deny me not thy holy ghost, take not away again from me that which thou hast once given. Render solace unto me, for doubtless the health and salvation which I look for in Christ doth assuredly appease & ascertain my conscience upon remission of my sins. stablish me with the spirit of liberty, so shall I being in faith and spirit purified and made strong teach the wicked and such as know the not, the way that leadeth unto thee, so that they also shall be turned unto the. Lord God discharge me of my hid and huge sins which be knit to my corrupt nature, I mean, weariness of thy word, grudging against thy commandments, and blasphemy. My tongue then being furnished with boldness of spirit shall frankly & without trembling teach, confess, & blow abroad thy righteousness, without which no man is righteous. Lord thou shalt open my lips, & then my mouth shall set forth thy praises and thy ways. Grant me such mouth and wisdom, as mine adversaries shall not be able to strive against, namely in the quarrel of thy word. Endow me with grace, to th'intent I may offer sacrifices of thanks, for nothing else verily requirest thou. Albeit yet thou despisest not the oblation and sacrifice of a contrite spirit, I mean, the mortifying of our own lust and will, and of that old Adam, that sojourneth in us, until we may be able to offer the sacrifice of thanks, and with glad semblant embrace & celebrate thy righteousness espied in the releasing of our sins. Wherefore for as much as we of ourselves can perform nothing that good is, bless thou O Lord of thy benignity and fatherly benevolence thy Christian people. Let the walls of Jerusalem be made up again by thine authority, let good workmen be set on work, I mean, true teachers, pastors, and prophets, and let us be fashioned for lively stones to the holy building, let them edify the people rightly, let us obey their instructions duly. Thou art the good man of the house, thirst thou out the workmen into the harvest, that they may gather by thy word of faith the people now ripe and ready to be reaped into the heavenvly barns, which workmen unless thou send forth, shall run of themselves vainly. For how should they preach not being sent. Surely, in vain we shall advance either our learning or ability, if thou tempre not the success of our things, if thou further not our doings, if thou send us not. Lo than thou shalt receive continual sacrifices of righteousness, for on thy altar we shall then lay the bullocks & fat sacrifices of our lips, yea and our own selves thereto, praising and worshipping the without stynting. Amen. For renouncing the company of hypocrites. Psal. 52. most holy Lord, let us being instructed and furnished with thy grace cast up the wily and malicious men, which can bear no truth, but give themselves to lies trusting to the vain helps of this world. bruise thou them O Lord, & rote them out of the land of the living persons, which thing when the righteous folk shall see, they shall fear the and rejoice. Grant that with an unconquerable trust we may alway lean to the only, let us not resemble the barren & corrupt trees, but let us be found like to the rank and fruitful olives in thine house. Upon thy name let us set our hope, upon thy name, I say, that is so good and that helpeth most readily all them that earnestly call thereon, like as in thy holiness is evidently espied. Wherefore let us also render unto the everlasting thanks, sith in us thou workest and heapest upon us all those benefits and commodities. So be it. For deliverance out of the devils bondage. Psal. 53. FOr as much as (O Lord our God) not one of us all hath wrought of himself any goodness for all we even of birth be spotted & corrupted, grant us thy righteousness, and be thou working through thy holy breath in us (keeping the godly rest of the new Saboth), such things as thou allowest & be pleasant unto thee, lest at any time we proudly seek our own honour & not thine in all our doings, and that being ransomed and delivered by the out of bondage, anguish, peril, and trouble, we mought joy everlastingly. Amen. A prayer of the congregation against enemies. Psalm. 54. Aid me Lord for thy name's sake, according to this thy promise. Who so ever calleth on the name of the Lord, shallbe safe. Take on the my quarrel against my pursuers, defend it by thy might and prowess, for my powers are utterly none at all. hearken Lord to my prayers, ponder the words of my mouth, strangers and such as utterly despise thee, have assaulted me & do cast how to bring me to death. Secure me Lord, be at hand keep me, fight for me. Let the things which they go about to work against me, fall on their own heads in case thou judgest them unworthy to be converted & to forthink themselves, otherwise although they be at this season mine enemies, yet of thy great bounty and mercy pardon them their sins, and give them the spirit of repentance, to the intent they may once at last be made my true and herty friends. For the same thy benefit, I shall employ myself to be thankful and serviceable unto thee, specially sith thy name is so loving, and thou art so at hand and present in extreme necessities. This, I say, shallbe bruited by the mouths of men and blown abroad with most high praises. So be it. A prayer of Christ's church. Psalm. 55. O My god hear me in my prayer abhor not my doleful plaint, take charge of me, and give ear. For certes, I shall never stint most lamentably to cry unto thee, till time thou hear my petition. Lo our enemy maketh proud resistance, he letteth as much as in him lieth thy quarrel, yea and all things that should be healthful and profitable unto us he hindereth, he stoppeth, he furiously condemneth. I am accused wrongfully, the ungodly persons lie in await of my life. From them O lord deliver me, set them beside their purpose, divide their tongues, let them disagree and be confused among themselves, rescue my soul out of their hands into peace, cut their combs, abate their pride, bring them down They will not turn themselves, they will not forthink them of their follies, for they be quite departed from thy fear and past all shame. My hole cause and grieve I cast upon thee, provide thou for me, force that I myscary not, keep, defend, conserve me, let me have at last some end of these hurly burlies & troubles, let me not hereafter revolve idle counsels with myself, let me not be counted a castawaye, a slave, a mocking stock any longer as heretofore I have been. These things I pray the I may obtain, sweet Saviour for thy holy names sake, according to the word of promise, whereunto I have respect with fast and sure trust continually. Amen. In bitter tribulations. Psalm. 56. GOd be thou merciful unto me, for on me they rage and make havoc unmercyfully. But to the alone I flee, thou art my refuge, in the only I trust, from thy word let me not shrink, but stiffly avow it & glory in it. Consider my salt tears, take compassion on me, cause mine enemies to recoil, let me feel at last that thou art my god, my Saviour, my buckler. rid my soul from death, mine eyes from bitter tears, my heart from care, my feet from sliding, so as I may walk afore thee, in the light of life, and that for ever more I may give thee, worthy thanks accordingly. Amen. Against the suppressours of the troth. Psalm. 57 Have mercy on me God, have mercy on me, for in the trusteth my soul, under shadow of thy wingꝭ I flee, till the wickedness wherewith I am pressed be passed from me. Unto thee (O God most high) I cry, raise me up that am fallen to ground which thing is most easy for the to do. From thy heaven send succours unto me. Out of their hands that intend to suppress me, pluck me away. Send thy bountiful goodness, which is so trusty & certain, whereby thou savest us freely without our own desert. This bountiful goodness O Lord we claim as due to us by thine own free promise. From the lions defend my soul, and also from the mortal soldiers and satellites of darkness, whose teeth be spears, whose tongues be two edged swords. mount above the heavens, that thou mayst be known to be the great & mighty God, sith these ungodly hell hounds thus by their doings, deny that thou dost govern any kingdom in heaven. I say, lift up thyself, and show what thou canst do in thy son Christ, who of long time even thorough the devices and dreams of men hath been wrongfully banished, driven out, and excommunicate. Declare that he is our only mercy stock and redemption, the treasure of riches, thy companion of divine glory and power. Thy goodness and grace be endless even as the bottomless sees in abundance amongs men, by pouring upon them thy treasures and benefits. Amen. For remission of daily trespasses. psalm. 58. Endow us with this grace lord that we may alway speak things pleasant unto thee, that we may allow with our sentence things just and true in thine eyes, let there be no ungodliness in our heart. That if any of us through brycklenes of the corrupt nature by thy sufferance shall fall, yet Lord let not such person harden his heart against thee, while like a father thou pluckest him back, neither suffer him to stop his ears against thy minister chastising him by thy word, but rather let him gladly hear and quycquely turn again. Be it notified and made plain unto men that we bear away some commodity of the justice of our faith, & that thou art nevertheless the just judge of the earth, to the glory of thy name. Amen. Against the bloody Pharisees. Psam 59 deliver me sweet Lord from mine enemies, from these blood soupers and wicked Pharisees deliver me, for behold they lie in await of my soul most slily, with all the power they can make. They cast their heads against me, being stirred up with hatred of thy word. In this my trouble, namely in the defence of thine own quarrel help me, let this their deadly malice displease thee, let their counsels take none effect. Be thou my fence, environ me with thy goodness, let the day star of thy solace rise unto me, so that cheerfully I may advance thy mercy. Be thou my refuge, & rescue me in all mine adversity (o my god) which art my aid, succour & health. Amen. For strength of mind to bear the cross. Psalm 60. HOw hast thou O Lord humbled and pluck me down? I dare now unneaths make my prayers unto thee, for thou art angry with me, but not without my deserving. Certainly I have sinned Lord, I confess it, I will not deny it. But oh my God pardon my trespasses, release my debts, render now thy grace again unto me, stop my wounds for I am all to plagued and beaten, yet Lord this not withstanding I abide patiently, and give mine attendance on thee, continually waiting for relief at thy hand, & that not without skill, for I have received a token of thy favour and grace towards me, I mean thy word of promise concerning Christ, who for me was offered on the cross for a ransom, a sacrifice, & pennyworth for my sins. Wherefore according to that thy promise defend me lord by thy right-hand, and give a gracious ear to my requests, be thou my stay in perils, for all man's stays are but vain. Beat down therefore mine enemies thine own self with thy power, which art mine only aydour and protector O Lord God almighty. Amen. For comfort and virtue of spirit. Psalm. 61. MY complaints hear thou, O merciful God, mark my suits and demands. My heart is stricken full of heaviness, set me on an high rock all at large and liberty. This my longing and petition grant me, O Lord. give everlasting inheritance to such as fear thy name. give us goodness to this end that we may alway keep thy troth. Then shall we still praise thy majesty with mystical songs and psalms. Amen. For patience and denial of a man's own self. Psalm. 62. MY soul without ceasing rejoice in the o Lord, which by thy word hast offered us health and salvation. For surely of the only floweth and proceedeth all health. Thou art my God, my sheet-anchor, health and protection. I receive all that good is at thy hand, if thou be my defensor, I shall not fail but have the upper hand. Protect thou me, that I trust neither to power nor to riches, but to the only. Thou hast power, I can not gainsay, to damn me, & again thou hast a loving will to save me. Let me be numbered I beseech thee, not amongs the cursed and disallowed persons, but amongs thy chosen & faithful subjects. Amen. For ghostly gifts and heavenly riches. psalm. 93. MY God doubtless art thou, early in the morning I rise up in my heart, & seek thee, my soul & my very flesh thirsteth & even longeth after the exceadyngly, I covet to see thy power (Lord) which savest me, and thy glory, most glorious king, which stayest me up what time I am oppressed. Thy goodness verily is better unto me then life. This goodness if thou show me, I shall not leave to magnify & brute thy renome every where, for I shall not cease continually to yield unto the due & worthy thanks & to sanctify thy name. Fill therefore mine heart (o my God) with grace, & stuff it with sweetness of spirit, even as the body is stuffed with bread and foison of meats. Then shall my mouth extol, praise, and hallow thee, not with feigned lips but with a full glad courage and quick spirit. O Lord be thou mine help and refuge, and so under the safeguard of thy wings I shall lead out my life peacybly. My soul mought still cleave fast unto thee, let thy ryghthande hold me up, by thy name and to the glory thereof let me swear. The undoubted troth that I confess let me ascribe and impute to the only. The mouths of them Lord which can utter nothing but errors and leasings stop mightily. So be it. Against the enemies of Christ. psalm 64. THe voice of my lamentation & plaining hear O Lord. From danger of enemies deliver my life. Withdraw me from the assembly of evil people and from the conspiracy of the ungodly, which whet their tongues as sharp as rasours' sending out their envenomed darts as it were to the mark, to th'intent they may shoot thorough the innocent and harmless persons, and that covertly, God be thou my shield, my stay, and ransom. Endow me with joy, peace, and hope, so as everlastingly I may boast & glory of the. Amen. For the obtaining of favour. Psalm. 65. O lord bring me again into fullness of joy, that I may give the due thanks, like as in the point of necessity thou hast promised. I will tell every body what benefits and goodness thou hast heaped upon me without my desert, to thintent other may be moved in like case to settle themselves in the which sure & full trust, when they be grievously oppressed. Repel not my humble requests (o my god) nether yet change thine accustomed goodness for thy name's sake. Amen. For the light and blessing of Christ. Psalm. 67. O that all peoples would confess the with loving hearts, for the manifold benefits and pleasures which they have received at thy hands, which with justice dost govern men, & art their leader upon earth. Pour down Lord thy goodness, so shall the earth yield unto thee, glory and praise, and unto us fruits for our food and sustenance. Psalm. 68 Arise Lord, let thine enemies be scattered, thy haters put to flight, the righteous and Christ's disciples made pleasant and merry. Let them sing praises & pleasant songs unto thee, let them blow abroad thy magnificence, let them most highly advance thy Majesty, let thy glory grow, let the kingdom of Christ from heaven among the chosen be enlarged, be thou the father of the fatherless, the judge of the widows, and the protector of them namely whom the world forsaketh, whose consciences be troubled, whom the world pursueth for Christ's sake, which be needy & wrapped full of misery. In thy house O Lord let us dwell in peace and concord, give us all one heart, one mind, one interpretation upon thy word. Pluck of, the bands aswell from the consciences as from the bodies of the miserable captives, and of them also which as yet be hedged in within the lists of death & unadvisedly strive against grace. How dry (Lord) is thine heritage? I pray thee, pour down largely the showers of thy graces, let a more plenteous frutfulnes chance, let thy people be strengthened with spirit. Grant us Lord thy word abundantly so as there may be many preachers of thy Gospel, which may within themselves holily conspire. Let thy church the spouse of Christ deal large spoils of the conquered Satan. All that believe in the by Christ (O Lord God of health) mought lift the up with praises, mought renown thee, and extol the. Truly I am at this present succourless, without comfort, and full of anguish. Oh God most merciful, let thy saving help fence me. And than I make a vow I shall not cease to magnify, to brute, to extol, and glorify thy name, & with high praises I shall serve thee, with earnest thanks giving, to th'intent that other folk being brought in to the like misery, may learn to flee for succours unto thee, to seek & find thee, which art the only life and relief of our hearts. O Lord, thou art mine only glory & assurance. My mouth mought even flow and run full of this thy glory. Cast me not away from the in this mine infirmity and weakness, forsake me not thou, though the strength either of my body or of my soul forsake me. Go not far away most merciful father from me. Make quick speed to aid and succour me, for constantly I abide and tarry for the only. By reason whereof I shall not stint to increase day by day thy praises, still ready to declare and set forth even to all the world thy righteousness and salvation, knowing certainly that thou art still present and at hand with me in all mine adversities and misfortunes, with thy heavenly grace to help & protect me accordynly. Amen. For increasing the knowledge concerning the kingdom of Christ. Psam. 72. SEt aloft (O God) the kingdom and power of Christ thy son and our king, to th'intent it may flourish & spread both far and wide, thy ghostly justice and judgement flowing in our hearts, so as thy poor and miserable people may be relieved & kept in perpetual peace, the grand enemy Satan with his imps and complices being subdued, and the foundation of health upon earth established, and consequently the fruits multiplied & enlarged amongs us. HOw good and gracious art thou O God of Israel, to all such as be of upright heart, which think no evil of thee, though they see the godly persons pressed with adversity, & the ungodly flowing in all wealth & pleasure. Stay my feet O Lord, that at no time they slip with any evil zeal or envy which I might have at the ungodly, who for the most part pass their lives quietly, and die more quietly. I beseech thee, let not thy chosen persons be discouraged, or offended by this godly providence in ordering of worldly things, nor shrink from the by reason thereof. But rather let us remember in what dangers in very deed those ungodly be, and with how unhappy a conclusion & term they close their happy course, & on the contrary part what pleasantness of conscience, what comfort and quietness shall follow this our unquietness. Let me (O Lord) delight in nothing else, save only in the. Be thou my lot, my portion, my inheritance for ever and ever without end. Amen. For the forsaken church of Christ. Psalm. 74. Wherefore, o god, hast thou thus driven us away, thus banished us? why boileth thy anger thus against the sheep of thy fold? Remember thy church, which thou hast chosen afore the creation of the world, which thou redemedest by Christ's blood, and which is the habitacle of thy name. From her deforsours & spoilers defend her, withdraw not thy helping hand. Look how the enemies make havoc of altogether, deliver not up the soul of the doleful turtle thy people unto the ravenous beasts, & forget not thus the souls of the poor. Remember thy league, thy testament, thy covenant, which art the self troth. Be, I say, at hand with us, namely for thine own cause, even that we may glorify thy name. Arise and debate our cause. Consider what spite, what wrongs, the ungodly folk work against thee, forget not the complaint of thy silly congregation. For lo, the of thy enemies grow daily more & more. I grant thou hast put us back for our deserts, but yet the regard of thine own glory why dost thou neglect? Thine own glory therefore O my Lord defend thou in us thy children, deliver us so that the enemies may espy thy power, and we may have a proof and feeling of thy fatherly pity towards us. Amen. For avoiding of slanders. psalm. 75. The benefit of my redemption lord god which I feel, let me knowledge and confess unto the ever more and more. For what time so ever I called upon thee, lo, the power of thy majesty and grace was present with me. Wherefore unto the let us give thanks, declaring thy wonderful deeds. And for asmuch as, O Lord, it is thy determinate will and sentence, that we be now scourged and punished, go to, of the cup of tribulations make us largely to drink. A prayer for the disperpled flock pressed with persecution. Psalm. 76. HEretofore thy name was only bruited in jewry, but now (O Lord) thy majesty most glorious is most wide and largely solemnized throughout the hole world. Thou art mighty and a passing diligent overseer of all those that belong unto the. The slanderous enemies of thy glory, ween thou hast forsaken us, which be thus wrapped in adversities. They lie spitefully ever in my neck, no man relieving me. But thou O Lord knowest the time when to help, and for the most part unlooked for, thou declarest wonderfully the power of thy majesty, in that thou at length deliverest such as believe in thee, even to the utter confusion of the ungodly. Wherefore now I pray the make quick speed to deliver us out of this present danger and distress, for thy name's sake, that is so holy, so recommended and advanced of all godly persons. So be it. A prayer of the troubled conscience. Psalm. 77. TO that I cry, O God, hear me. Night & day I trace & hunt after thee, by all means I can. To the only for help I call, according as thou hast given me in commandment. Well assured I am, that at length thou wilt hear me, verily my heart can never be merry, whiles thou hidest thyself from it, yea I quake to think upon thee, my spirit faileth me, so sore am I afraid of thy judgement. When I call to mind the time of my life evil spent, I am well nigh in despair. No writings of comfort can cheer me. Oftentimes say I to myself, oh is God now an other person than he was afore time? sith now we lack those his benefits, wherewith our forefathers were so highly enriched? Why hath God thus withdrawn from us all his pity? is now the strength of the word of life waxed feeble, where it ought to have continued for ever? hath God forgotten his gifts of grace? or is his power to have compassion, waxen so faint that he can not put back his wrath again from us? These & such other be the fancies of my weakness, where the matter in deed (o lord) is nothing so, as he may easily perceive who so ever well pondereth the process of thy grace. Certes I know well, thou wilt turn again, and change me into a better case, and set me up aloft again with thy right hand, o most high king & saviour. For thou my God art such one as alone canst work wondrous things, so that nothing can resist it, March forward on my side in all haste with thy power speedily to deliver me from this strait for thy holy names sake For grace and righteousness of heart. Psalm. 78. FOr as much, Lord God, as thou haste showed many wondrous signs in rescuing and delivering thy people Israel forth from Egypt and thereto wrought no small miracles in conduyting them thorough the wilderness, whereby thou hast declared that in thine hands is an incomparable power both to save and slay: grant us grace alway both in word and in deed to follow thy law. Bow our ears to the words of thy mouth. And let thy words so work in us, that we may teach other the same, let us evermore trust on the alone, remembering thy works and valiant deeds, lest either we forsake thee, or be negligent & reckless in our service towards thee, but rather thorough thy spirit, which graciously thou shalt pour on our hearts, cause that faithfully and busily we may make suit unto the in both times, aswell in prosperity as in adversity. Feed us continually with angel's food, that is with thy holy word, whereby our hearts may be made righteous and strong to our Lord jesus Christ. Be not ever more angry with us sith thou knowest we be but flesh and as a puf of wind that suddenly vanisheth▪ and never returneth. Grant that the true David jesus Christ, may be our herdman, to guide us thorough innocency and pureness of heart, & to govern us as his gracious hand knoweth best to be done. Amen. How the chylden of God ought to pray in their misfortune and adversity. Psalm. 79. How long wilt thou O lord bear us such displeasure, how long shall thy fume thus be hot as fire? come home I beseech the again to us, bringing with the thy loving favour and gifts, look not narrowly on the offences of our ancestors and forefathers, nor yet of our own life, yea rather let thy mercy increase upon us, for we are become very caitiffs and wretches, marvelously vexed of the ungodly persons, because thou wollest it so to be. Help God, for only thou hast power to deliver us, not that we have deserved the same, for surely no favour have we deserved at thy hands, neither can we claim of duty any thing of thee, but rather after our deserts we be the children of damnation & castaways, yet have thou O Lord respect to thy holy name that it may be glorified thorough us. forgive us, I say, our sins, even for thy holy names sake, that we may have occasion thereby to hallow it, to th'intent we may according to thy worthiness, and as thou art of thine own nature report the to be even our God, saviour, father, kind hearted, meek, merciful, our only comfort, trust, defence, and ransom. Suffer the groanings and complaints of thy prisoners to come to thee, deliver them, preserve thy devout and sworn subjects, as many as be appointed to be of thy flock. Why dost not thou hear him that crieth to the so early afore the son rise? Why dost thou so uncourteously pussh back thy client calling on the after the dayspring? Why dost thou so roughly turn thy face alway from me? Long time have I lain in prison, and found no remedy, in so much that I was clean destitute both of God's help & man's Thou takest away from me all the comfort I might have against death, all the trust of life, & all that mought secure me in adversity, & again thou sendest me all misfortune, damage, and calamity. A prayer of Esdras for the sins of the people. 1. Esd. 9 MY God, I am confounded, and dare not lift up mine eyes unto the my god, for our wickedness is grown over our head, and our trespasses are waxen great unto the heaven, even from the time of our fathers. yea & ourselves also have grievously sinned unto this day, & because of our wickedness have we, our kings, and priests been delivered into the hand of the kings of the nations, into the sword, into captivity, into spoil, and into confusion of face, as it is come to pass this day. But now is there a little and sudden graciousness come from the Lord our God, so that some of us are escaped, to th'intent he may give us his peace in his holy place, that our God may light our eyes, and give us a little life in our bondage For we are bond men, yet our god hath not forsaken us in our bondage but hath inclined mercy unto us in the sight of the heathen kings that he should give us life, & promote the house of our God, and so set up the desolation thereof, and give us an hedge in juda and Jerusalem. And now O our God, what shall we say after this, for we have forsaken thy commandments, which thou hast commanded by thy servants & Prophets, and said. The land whereunto ye go to possess it, is an unclean land, through the filthiness of the people of the lands, in their abominations, wherewith they have made it full of uncleanness on every side. Therefore shall ye not give your daughters unto their sons, and their daughters shall ye not take unto your sons, & seek not their peace and wealth for ever, that ye may be strong, and enjoy the good in the land, and that ye & your children may have the inheritance of it for evermore. And after all this that is come upon us because of our most naughty deeds and our great trespass: thou our god hast spared our wickedness, & hast given us a deliverance as it is come to pass this day, to the intent we should not turn back, and let go thy commandments neither be joined in matrimony with the people of these abominations. Wilt thou then be wroth at us, till we be utterly consumed, so that nothing remain, and till there be no deliverance? O lord of Israel thou art righteous, for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day. Behold in thy presence are we in our trespass, for hereupon is there no standing before the. And I and my fathers have sinned also, we have been led out of the way by vanities in that we have not kept thy commandments, statutes, & laws which thou commandest thy servant Moses. And they are thy servants & thy people whom thou hast delivered through thy great power and mighty hand. I beseech the lord let thine ear bow down to the prayer of thy servants whose desire is to fear thy name. Amen. A confession and solemn prayer of the levites and of the church for sins with a rehearsal of the benefits of God. 2. Esd. 9 LOrd thou alone hast made heaven, and the heaven of heavens with all their company, the earth & all that is thereupon, the see and all that is contained therein, thou givest life unto all, and the host of heaven bow themselves unto the. Thou art the Lord god, that diddest chose Abraham & foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give him & his seed the land of the Canaanites, Hethytes, Amorites, Pheresites, jebusites, and Gergesites, And thou madest good thy words, for thou art righteous, and didst consider the misery of our fathers in Egypte, & heardest their complaint by the red see, and showedst tokens & wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, & on all the people of his land. For thou knewest that they were presumptuous & cruel against them, and so madest thou the a name, as it is this day. And the red see didst thou divide before them, so that they went thorough the mids of the see dry shoed. As touching their persecutors thou threwest them in to the deep as a stone, into the raging waters, and leddest thy people on the day time in a cloudy pillar, & on the night season in a pillar of fire to show them light in the way that they went. Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai, and spakest unto them from heaven, & gavest them right judgements, true laws, good commandments & statutes, and declaredst unto them thy holy Sabbath and commandest them precepts, ordinances, & laws by Moses thy servant, and gavest them bread from heaven, when they were hungry, and broughtest forth water for them, out of the rock when they were thirsty, & promisedst them, that they should go in and take possession of the land, over which thou hadst lift up thine hand, for to give them. But they and our fathers were proud and hardnecked, so that they followed not thy commandments, and refused to hear, & did not remember the wonders that thou didst for them, but became obstinate and hedy, in so much that they turned back to their bondage in their disobedience. But thou my God forgavest, & waste gracious, merciful, patient, and of great goodness and forsookest them not. And though they made a molten calf and said: this is thy god that brought the out of the land of Egypt and did great blasphemies, yet forsookest thou them not in the wilderness, according to thy great mercy. And the cloudy pillar departed not from them, on the day time to lead them the way, neither the pillar of fire in the night season, to show them light in the way that they went. And thou gavest them thy good spirit to inform them, & withheldest not thy Manna from their mouth, and gavest them water when they were thirsty. Forty years long madest thou provision for them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing. Their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not, and thou gavest them kingdoms and nations, and thou dyvidedst them according to their portions. And their children multipliedst thou as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them into the land whereof thou hadst spoken unto their fathers that they should go into it, and have it in possession, And the children went and possessed the land and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land, and gavest them into their hand, and their kings & the people of the land, that they might do with them what they would. So they won their strong cities & the fat land, & took possession of houses that were full of all manner goods, wells digged out, vineyards, oylegardens, and many fruitful trees, and they did eat, and were filled, & became fat, and lived in wealth thorough thy great goodness. But this notwithstanding they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and threw thy law behind their backs, & slew thy Prophets which exhorted them so earnestly that they should convert unto thee, and did great blasphemies. Therefore thou gavest them over, into the hand of their enemies that vexed them, But in time of their trouble they cried unto thee, and thou heardest them from heaven, & of thy great mercy thou gavest them saviours, which helped them out of their enemies hands, But when they came to rest, they turned back again to do evil before the. Therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them. And then they converted and cried unto thee, and thou hardest them from heaven, and many times hast thou delivered them according to thy great mercy, and warnedst them, that they should turn again unto thy law But all this notwithstanding, they were proud and hearkened not unto thy commandments, but sinned against thy laws (which a man should do and live in them) and they turned the shoulder away, and became stiffnecked and would not hear. And many years didst thou forbear them, and warnedest them thorough thy spirit even by th'office of thy prophets, and yet would they not hear. Therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the nations in the lands. But for thy great mercies sake thou diddest not utterly consume them, neither diddest thou forsake them, for thou art a gracious and merciful god. Now therefore our god, thou great god, mighty & terrible, thou that keepest covenant and mercy, turn not away thy face from all the travail that hath happened unto us, and unto our kings, Princes, priests, Prophets, Fathers & all thy people, sithence the time of the kings of Assur unto this day. Thou art righteous in all that thou hast brought upon us, for thou hast done truly. But we on our behalf have been ungodly, our kings, princes, priests, & fathers have not done after thy law, nor regarded thy commandments, and thy earnest exhortations, wherewith thou hast exhorted them, and have not served the in their kingdoms, and in thy great goodness that thou savedst them. A prayer of the church for sins Sap. 15. THou (O our God) art sweet, long suffering and true, and with mercy orderest thou all things Though we sin, yet are we thine, for we know thy greatness. The prayer that Baruch prescribed unto the captives in Babylon for their sins. Baruch. 23. THe Lord our God is righteous and we with our fathers are brought to open shame, as it is to see this day. And as for these plagues that are come upon us already, the lord had devised them for us, yet would we not pray unto the Lord our God, that we might every man turn from his naughty ways. Therefore the Lord hath caused such plagues to come upon us, for he is righteous in all his works, that he hath commanded us, which we also have not done nor hearkened unto his voice, for to walk in the commandments of the Lord, that he had given unto us. And now O Lord God of Israel thou that hast brought thy people out of the land of Egypte with a mighty hand, with tokens and wonders with thy great power & out stretched arm and hast gotten thyself a name, as it is come to pass this day, O Lord our god we have sinned, we have done wickedly, we have behaved ourselves ungodly in all thy righteousness. Turn thy wrath from us (we beseech thee) for we are but a few left among the Heythen, where thou hast scattered us. Hear our prayers (O Lord) and our petitions, bring us out of bondage, for thine own sake, get us favour in the sight of them which have led us away, that allandes may know that thou art the Lord our god, and that Israel and his generation calleth upon thy name. O Lord look down from thy holy house upon us, incline thine ear and hear us. For the dead that be gone down to their graves, and whose souls are out of their bodies, give unto the Lord neither praise nor ryghteousmaking, but the soul that is vexed for the multitude of her sins, which walketh heavily and weakly, whose eyes begin to fail, such a soul giveth praise and righteousness unto the lord, O Lord we power out our prayers before thee, & require mercy in thy sight, not for any godliness of our forefathers, but because thou hast sent out thy wrath and indignation upon us, according as thou didst threaten us by thy servants the Prophets. O Lord our God thou hast entreated us after all thy goodness and according to all thy great loving mercy, like as thou spakest by thy servant Moses in the day when thou didst command him to write thy law before the children of Israel, saying. If ye will not hearken unto my voice then shall this great multitude be turned into a very small people for I will scatter them abroad, notwithstanding I am sure that this folk will not hear me, for it is an hardenecked people, but in the land of their captivity they shall remember themselves, and learn to know that I am the lord their god, when I shall give them an heart to understand, and ears to hear: then shall they praise me in the land of their captivity, and think upon my name. Then shall they turn them from their hard backs, and from their ungodliness. Then shall they remember the things that happened unto their fathers, which sinned against me. So will I bring them again in to the land, which I promised which an oath unto their father's Abraham, Isaac and jacob, & they shall be lords of it, yea I will increase them, and not minish them. And I will make an other covenant with them, such one as shall endure for ever, namely that I will be their God, and they shallbe my people, & I will no more drive my people the children of Israel out of the land that I have given them. And now O Lord almighty, thou god of Israel, our soul that is in trouble & our spirit that is vexed, cry unto the. Hear us (o lord) and have pity upon us, for thou art a merciful god. God be gracious unto us for we have sinned before the. Thou endurest for ever, should we then utterly perish? O lord almighty thou god of Israel: hear now the prayer of the dead Israelites and of their children, which have sinned before thee, and have not hearkened unto the voice of the lord their god, for which cause these plagues hang now upon us. Oh lord remember not the wickedness of our forefathers, but think upon thy power and name now at this time, for thou art the lord our God, and thee (o lord) will we praise For thou hast put thy fear in our hearts, to the intent we should call upon thy name and praise the in our captivity & that we might turn from the wickedness of our forefathers that sinned before the. O lord unto us to our kings and princes, to our forefathers even to us all that have offended thee, belongeth open shame. But unto thee (o lord god) pertaineth mercy and forgiveness, where as we on our behalf are gone back from thee, & have not obeyed the voice of the lord our god, to walk in his laws which he laid before us, by his servants the prophets, yea all Israel have gone back from thy law so that they have not hearkened unto thy voice, wherefore the curse and oath, that is written in the law of Moses the servant of god (against whom we have offended) is poured upon us. And he hath performed his words, which he spoke against us, and against our judges that judged us, to bring upon us such a plague as never was under heaven, like as it is now come to pass in jerusalem, yea all this plague, as is written in the law of Moses, is come upon us. Yet we never made any supplication before thee, o lord, that we might turn again from our wickedness, and think upon thy troth Therefore hath the lord made haste to bring this plague upon us, for the lord our god is rightwise in all his works which he doth, for we would not hearken to his voice. And now O lord our god, thou that with a mighty hand hast brought thy people out of Egypte to get thyself a name (as thou hast at this day) we have sinned O lord and done wickedly against all thy righteousness. Let thy wrathful displeasure be turned away I beseech the from us, for through the heinous offence of us and our forefathers, is thy church abhorred of all them that are about us. Now therefore O our god hear the prayer of thy servant & let thy face shine over thy Sanctuary that lieth waste. O my god bow down thine ear & hearken, at least for thine own sake, open thine eyes and see, how we be spoiled, for we do not cast our prayers before the in our own righteousness, but only in thy great mercies, O lord hear, O lord forgive, O lord consider, tarry not over long, but for thine own sake do it. A prayer that we may be delivered from our adversaries. Esai. 37. O Lord of hosts, thou god of Israel which sittest upon cherubin, thou art the god alone of all the kingdoms of the world, thou only hast created heaven and earth. incline thine ear Lord and consider, open thine eyes and see, deliver us from the hand of our adversaries to th'intent all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou only art the lord. Amen. The prayer of Isaiah when the people were sore plagued Isaiah. 65.64. Look down from heaven, and behold the dwelling place of thy sanctuary and thy glory, How is it that thy jealousy, thy strength, the multitude of thy mercies & thy loving kindness will not be entreated of us? yet art thou our father. Abraham knew us not, neither was Israel acquainted with us. But thou Lord art our father and redeemer, and thy name is everlasting. O lord wherefore haste thou led us out of thy way? Wherefore hast thou hardened our hearts that we fear the not? Be at one with us again for thy servants sake, which be of the generation of thine heritage Thy people hath had but little of thy sanctuary in possession, for our enemies have taken it in. And we are become even as we were at the beginning, what time we were not under thy dominion nor called on thy name. O that thou wouldest cleave the heaven insunder, come down: & that the mountains might melt a way at thy presence, like as an hot fire, and that the malicious might boil as the water doth upon the fire, whereby thy name might be known amongs thine enemies, and that the paynims might tremble before thee, that thou mightest come down with thy wondrous strange works, than should the hills melt at thy presence, for sithence the beginning of the world, was none (except thou o god) that hard or perceived, neither hath any eye seen what thou dost for them that put their trust in the. Thou helpest him that doth right with cheerfulness, and them that think upon thy ways. But lo thou art angry, for we have sinned and have been ever in sin, yea there is not one hole, we are all as an unclean thing, and all our ryghtuousnesses are as clothes stained with the flowers of a woman, we fall everyone as the leaf, for our sinners carry us away as the wind. There is no man that calleth upon thy name, & that standeth up to take hold by the. Therefore hidest thou thy face from us, and consumest us because of our sins. But now o lord thou that art our father, we are the clay & thou art our potter, and we are all the work of thy hands. Be not to sore displeased (o lord) and keep not our offences to long in thy remembrance but consider that we all are thy people. The cities of thy sanctuary lie waist. Zion is a wilderness, and jerusalem a desert. Our holy house which is our beauty, where our fathers praised that is brent up, yea all our commodities and pleasures are wasted away, wilt thou not be entreated (Lord) for all this? wilt thou hold thy peax, & scourge us so sore? another prayer of Hieremye Hierem. 17. heal me (o lord) and I shallbe hole, save thou me and I shall be saved, for thou art my praise. Be not thou terrible unto me, O Lord, for thou art he in whom I hope, when I am in peril. Let my persecutors be confounded, but not me, let them be afraid & not me. Thou shalt bring upon them the fyme to their plague, and shalt destroy them right sore, Amen. another prayer of Hieremye. Hier. 31. O lord thou hast chastened me, & thy chastening have I received as an untamed calf, Convert thou me and I shall be converted, for thou art my lord God, for as soon as thou tournedst me I repented myself, And when I understood I smote upon my thigh, I confessed and was ashamed, because I suffered reproach of my youth. A prayer of Hieremye under the person of Christ which every Christian may say in time of adversity. Lamenta. 3. THou haste heard my voice, O lord and haste not turned away thine ears from my sighing and crying, Thou haste approached near me, when I called upon the & hast said, fear not. Thou (O lord) haste maintained the quarrel of my soul, and haste redeemed my life, O lord thou hast seen my blasphemers take thou my quarrel upon thee. Thou hast well considered how they go about to do me harm, and that all their counsels are against me. Thou haste heard their despiteful words (o lord) yea and all their imaginations against me. Thou sayst also their sitting down and their rising up, they make their songs of nothing but of me. Reward them o lord according to the works of their hands. give them the thing, that their own heart is afraid of, even thy curse. Persecute them, o Lord, with thine indignation, and rote them out from under the heaven. Amen The prayer of judas Machabeus when he should encounter with his enemies. 1. Machab. 4. BLessed art thou o saviour of Israel, which didst destroy the violent power of the giant in the hand of thy servant David & gavest the host of the heythen into the hand of jonathas the son of Saul, his weapon bearer, put this host now into the hand of thy people Israel, and let them be confounded in their multitude & horsemen. Make them afraid and discomfit the boldness of their strength, that they may be moved through their destruction. Cast them down through the sword of thy lovers, then shall all they that know thy name, praise that for ever with thankesgyving, Amen. The prayer of Nehemias' for the people oppressed of the Heythen. 2. Machab. 1. O Lord god maker of all things thou fearful and strong, thou righteous and merciful, thou that art only a gracious king, only liberal, only just, almighty and everlasting, thou that deliverest Israel from all trouble, thou that hast chosen the fathers and haste hallowed them, receiving the offering for the hole people of Israel, preserve thine own portion and hallow it. Gather those together that are scattered abroad from us. deliver them that are under the heythens bondage, look upon them which are despised and abhorred, that the heythen may know and see, how thou art our god. punish them that oppress & proudly put us to dishonour. Amen. OF THE BIBLE THANKESGYVYNges and praises unto God, of the fathers. The song of Moses and the children of Israel for their deliverance from. Pharaoh. Exod. 15. LEt us sing unto the lord, for he is become glorious, the horseman he hath overthrown in the se. The lord is my strength & my song, and is become my salvation, he is my god and I will glorify him, he is my father's god and I will extol him upon high. The lord is as a strong man of war, almighty is his name. pharao's charettes & his host, hath he cast into the see. His piked captains were drowned in the red see, the deep waters have covered them, they sonk to the bottom as a stone. Thy hand lord is glorious in power, thine hand hath all to shaken thine enemies, and with thy great glory thou hast destroyed thine adversaries. Thou sentest forth thy wrath, and it consumed them even as stubble with the breathe of thine anger. The water gathered together and the floods stood still as a rock, and the deep water congealed together in the midst of the see. The enemy said I will follow & overtake them and will divide the spoil, I will satisfy my lust upon them, I will draw my sword, & mine hand shall destroy them. But thou bluest with thy breath, and the see covered them, they sank as lead in the mighty waters. Who is like unto the o lord amongs the gods? who is like the so glorious in holiness, fearful, laudable, and which showest wonders? Thou stretchedst thy right hand and the earth swallowed them, with mercy thou caryedst thy people which thou deliverdest, and broughtest them with thy strength unto thy holy land. The nations heard, and were afraid, pangs came upon the Philestines. Then the Dukes of the Edomites were amazed, and trembling came upon the mightiest of the Moabites, all the inhabitants of Canaan waxed faint hearted. Let fear & dread fall upon them, through the greatness of thine arm, while thy people pass thorough, O Lord. Bring them in and plant them in the mountains of thine inheritance, the place lord which thou hast made to dwell in, the sanctuary lord which thy hands have prepared. The lord reign ever & alway, For Pharaoh went on horseback with his charettes & horsemen into the see, and the lord brought the waters of the see upon them, But the children of Israel went on dry land through the see. Anna thanking the lord for his benefit, on this manner singeth to god. 1. Kings. 2. MY heart rejoiceth in the lord, mine horn is high in the lord and my mouth is wide open over mine enemies for I rejoice in thy saving. There is none so holy as thou o lord, no there is none save thou. Neither is there any strength like unto our God. Talk not to much proudly, let old things depart out of your mouths, for the lord is god of knowledge and judgeth the thoughts. The bows of the strong are broken & the weak be endued with strength. They that of late were full, have let forth themselves for bred, but the hungry be satisfied, in so much the barren hath borne seven, and she that had many children is waxed feeble. The lord killeth & quickeneth again, he bringeth down to hell and fetteth up again. The lord maketh poor and maketh rich, bringeth low and heaveth up on high, he raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dongehyll, to set him among princes, and make him hold the seat of glory. For the pillars of the earth are the lords, & he hath set the round world upon them. He will keep the feet of his saints, but the wicked shall keep silence in darkness. For noman in his own might shall be strong. The lords adversaries shall be made to fear him and out of heaven he shall thunder upon them. The lord shall judge the costs of the world & shall give might unto his king, and exalt the horn of his Christ. Amen. A song that David sounge unto the lord in the day that the lord delivered him out of the hand of his enemies 2. Reg. 22. THe lord is my rock, my castle and my deliverer. God is my strength and in him will I trust, my shield and the horn that defendeth me, mine high hold and refuge, O my saviour save me from wrong, I will praise & call on the Lord, and so shall I be saved from my enemies, for the waves of death have closed me about, and the floods of belial have feared me, the cords of hell have compassed me about, and the snares of death have overtaken me. In my tribulation I called to the lord, & cried to my god, and he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry entered in to his ears. The earth trembled & quoke, and the foundations of heaven moved & shaken because he was angry. Smoke went out of his nostrils & consuming fire out of his mouth that coals were kindled of it, he bowed the heaven and came down, & darkness was underneath his feet. And he road upon Cherub & flew, and appeared upon the wings of the wind, and he made darkness a tabernacle round about him with water gathered together in thick clouds. Of the brightness that was before him, coals were set on fire. The Lord thundered from heaven, & the most high put out his voice, & he shot arrows & scattered them, & hurled lightening and turmoiled them. The bottom of the See appeared, & the foundations of the world were seen, by reason of the rebuking of the lord, and through blasting of the breath of his nostrils, he sent from above and fet me & plucked me out of mighty waters. He delivered me from my mighty enemy and from them that hated me & were to strong for me. When they had compassed me in the day of my tribulation, the lord stayed me up and brought me out into roomth, & delivered me because he delighted in me. The lord rewarded me according to my righteousness, and according to the pureness of my hands he dealt with me. For I kept the ways of the lord, and did no wickedness nor forsook my God, But I had all his laws in my sight, and turned my face from none of his ordinances. I was pure unto him ward, and kept myself from wickedness, & the Lord did to me again according to my righteousness, & after my pureness that I had in his sight. With the holy thou shalt be holy, and with the man that is uncorrupt, thou shalt be uncorrupt, with the pure, thou shalt be pure, & with the froward thou shalt be froward also. Certainly the people that are in adversity thou shalt help, and on the proud shalt thou cast thine eyes. Thou art my light O lord, and the lord shall lighten my darkness. Loo with thine help I will run through an host of men, & by the aid of my god I will spring over a wall. The way of god is undefiled, and the word of the lord fyned as gold, and he is a shield to all that trust in him. Who is a god save the lord, & who mighty save our god? God is my strength in war, and rideth the way before me. He maketh my feet as swift as an hinds, and setteth my feet fast upon my hold. He teacheth my hands to fight, that a bow of brass is to weak for mine arm. And thou hast saved me with thy shield, and keepest me for ever in meekness. Thou madest me room to walk in, that my feet should not stumble, I followed mine enemies and destroyed them, and turned not again until I had consumed them I wasted them and so clouted them that they could in no wise arise, but fell underneath my feet. Thou compasedest me about with might to battle, and madest them that rose against me to stoop under me. Thou madest mine enemies to turn their backs to me, and them that hated me, & I destroyed them. They looked for help, but none came to save them, unto the lord they cried but he heard them not. The lord mought live, and blessed be he my strength, & exalted be god the strength that saveth me. It is god that avengeth me, and that bringeth down the people under me, and delivereth me from my enemies. Thou liftest me up on high from them that rise against me and deliverest me from the wicked men. Therefore I will praise the O lord among the heythen, and will sing unto thy name. A blessing of Tobias the elder, wherewith he blessed the lord in the end of his life. Tob. 13. great art thou, o lord for ever more, and thy kingdom world without end. For thou scourgest & healest, thou leadest unto hell & bringest out again. Yea there is none that may escape thine hand. O ye children of Israel, give thanks unto the lord, and praise him in the sight of the heythen. For among the heythen which know him not, hath he scattered you, that ye should show forth his marvelous works, & cause them to know, that there is none other god almighty, but he. He hath chastened us for our misdeeds, & for his own mercies sake, shall he save us. Consider then how he hath dealt with you, and praise him with fear and dread, and magnify the everlasting king in your works. Certes I will praise him even in the place of my captivity, for he hath showed his majesty unto a sinful people. Turn you therefore o ye sinners, and do ye righteousness before god, trusting verily he will show his mercy upon you. Assuredly I and my soul wool rejoice in god. Praise the Lord all ye his chosen, hold the days of gladness and be thankful unto him. Oh my soul bless thou the lord. Amen. The blessing of Seraphin Esay. 6. HOly art thou, holy art thou, holy art thou, thou art the lord god of hosts, all the earth is full of thy glory. Thankinges. Esay. 23. O Lord, thou art my god I will praise thee, and magnify thy name, for thou bringest marvelous things to pass, according to thine old counsels truly & steadfastly. An other of the same. Esay. 26. O Lord give us peax, for thou workest in us all our works. O lord our god, though such lords have domination upon us as know the not, yet grant, that we may hope only in the & keep thy name in remembrance. Amen. A blessing with an admiration of the marvelous counsels of god. Hiere. 32. O Lord god, it is thou that hast made heaven & earth with thy great power and high arm, & there is nothing to hard for the. Thou sheweste mercy upon thousands, thou dost recompense the wickedness of the fathers, into the bosom of the children that come after them. Thou art the great & mighty god, whose name is the lord of hosts great in counsel, and infinite in thought. Thine eyes look upon all the ways of men's children, to reaward every one after his way and according to the fruits of his inventions. The song and thanksgiving of the blessed virgin Mary. Luc. I. MY soul magnifieth the Lord, & my spirit rejoiceth in God my saviour. For he hath looked upon the poor degree of his handmaid, Behold now from hence forth shall all generations call me blessed, for he that is mighty hath done to me great things, & holy is his name. And his mercy on them that fear him throughout all generations. He uttered strength with his arm, he disperpled the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He deposed the mighty from their seats, and advanced them of low degree. He filled the hungry with good things and sent away the rich empty. He remembered mercy, and helped his servant Israel, Even as he promised to our fathers, Abraham and to his seed for ever. The prophecy and giving of thanks of zachary. Luc. 1. Praised be the lord god of Israel, for he hath visited and redeemed his people. And hath raised up an horn of salvation unto us in the house of his servant David, Even as he promised by the mouth of his holy Prophets, which were sithence the world began, that we should be delivered from our enemies & from the hands of all that hate us, To th'intent he might fulfil the mercy promised to our fathers and remember his holy covenant. And perform the oath which he swore to our father Abraham, to give us, that we being once delivered out of the hands of our enemies, might serve him without fear, all the days of our life, in holiness and righteousness before him. And thou child shalt be called the Prophet of the highest, for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways, To give knowledge of salvation unto his people for the forgiveness of sins, Through the tender mercy of our god, whereby the day spring from above hath visited us, to give light to them that sat in darkness & in shadow of death, & to guide our feet in the way of peax. Thanks of Paul for his conversion unto Christ. 1. Tim. 1. Unto God king everlasting immortal, invisible, and wise only, be honour and praise for ever and ever. Amen. A song of the triumphers over the beast. Apoc. 15. great and marvelous are thy works, Lord god almighty, just and true are thy ways, king of saints. Who shall not fear, O Lord, and glorify thy name? For thou only art holy, & all gentiles shall come and worship before thee, for thy judgements are made manifest. A blessing of the people by king Solomon. 3. Reg. 8. BLessed be the Lord, that hath given rest unto his people Israel according to all that he promised, so that there is not one word escaped of all the good promises which he promised by the hand of Moses his servant. The Lord our God be with us, as he was with our fathers & forsake us not, neither leave us, but let him bow our hearts unto him, that we walk in all his ways and keep his commandments, ordinances, and rites which he commanded our fathers. And let these my words which I have prayed before the lord, come nigh unto the lord our god day and night, that he defend the quarrel of his servant and of his people Israel evermore to th'intent all nations of the earth may know that the lord is God, and none other but he, and let our hearts be sound with the lord our god, that we may walk in his ordinances and keep his laws. Amen. ¶ PRAYERS FOR SVCcours and reliefs of life, for wisdom, for humility and for other natural gifts A prayer of Solomon for a competency of life. Proverb. 30. TWo things I require of thee, that thou wilt not deny me before I die. Remove from me vanity and lies, give me neither poverty nor riches, only grant me a necessary living, least if I be to full I mought happily deny thee, & say what fellow is the lord? or constrained through poverty, I mought fall unto stealing, & forswear the name of my god. Amen. A prayer for obtaining of wisdom. Sap. 9 GOd of my fathers, and lord of mercies, thou that haste made all things with thy word, and ordained man thorough thy wisdom, that he should have dominion over the creature which thou haste made that he should order the world according to equity & righteousness and execute judgement with a true heart, give me wisdom, which is ever about thy seat, and put me not out from among thy children. For I thy servant and son of thy handmaid am a feeble person, of a short time, and to young to the understanding of judgement & of thy laws. Yea though a man be never so perfect among the children of men, yet if thy wisdom be not with him, he shallbe nothing worth. Oh send her out of thy holy heavens, and from the throne of thy majesty, that she may be with me & labour with me that I may know what is acceptable in thy sight. For she knoweth and understandeth all things, & she shall conduct me right soberly in my works, and preserve me in her power. So shall my works be acceptable. Amen. A prayer for meekness and the obtaining of chastity Eccle. 23. O Lord thou father & god of my life, let me not have a proud look. But turn away all voluptuousness from me. Take from me the lusts of the body, let not the desires of uncleanness take hold upon me, and give me not over into an unshamefast and obstinate mind. Amen. The prayer of jesus the son of sirach, in necessity and for wisdom. Eccle. the last. I Thank the O Lord and king, and praise the o god my saviour I will yield praises unto thy name, for thou art my defender and helper from the snare of traitorours' tongues, and from them that are occupied in lies. Thou hast been my helper from such as rose against me, and haste delivered me according to thy great mercy, and for thy holy names sake. Thou hast delivered me from the roaring of them that prepared themselves to devour me, out of the hands of such as sought after my life, from the multitude of them that troubled me and went about to set fire upon me on every side, so that I was not brent in the mids of the fire. From the deep of hell, thou deliverdest me, from the unclean tongue, from dying words, from the wicked judge, and from the unryghteouse tongue. My soul shall praise the Lord unto death, for my life drew nigh unto hell. They compassed me round about on every side, and there was no man to help me, I looked about me, if there were any man that would succour me, but there was none. Then thought I upon thy mercy, O Lord, and upon thy acts that thou haste done ever of old, namely that thou delyvereste such as put their trust in thee, & ryddest them out of the hands of the false paynim. Thus lifted I up my prayer from the earth, and prayed for deliverance from death, I called upon the lord my father, that he would not leave me with out help in the day of my trouble, and in the time of the proud. I praised thy name continually, yielding honour and thanks unto it, and so my prayer was herd. Thou savedst me from destruction and deliverdest me from the unrighteous tyme. Therefore will I knowledge, and praise thee, & advance the name of the Lord. When I was yet but young, or ever I went astray, I desired wisdom openly in my prayer, I came therefore before the temple and I sought her very busyly. Then flourished she unto me as a grape that is soon ripe. My heart rejoiced in her, than went my foot the right way, yea from my youth sought I after her, I bowed down my ear and received her, I found in myself much wisdom & prospered greatly in her. Therefore will I give the glory unto him that giveth me wisdom, for I am advised to do thereafter, I will be jealous to cleave unto that is good, so shall I not be confounded. My soul hath wrestled with her, and I have been diligent to be occupied in her. I lifted up mine hands on high, then was my soul lightened through wisdom so that I knowledged my foolishness. I ordered my soul after her, she and I were one heart from the beginning, and I found her in cleanness, and therefore shall I not be forsaken. My heart longeth after her & I gate a good treasure. Through her the lord hath given me a new tongue, wherewith I will praise him Oh come unto me ye unlearned, and dwell in the house of wisdom, with draw not yourselves from her, but talk and common of these things, for your souls are very thirsty. I opened my mouth and spoke, Oh come and buy wisdom without money, bow down your neck under her yoke, and your soul shall reaceyve wisdom, she is even at hand and is content to be found. Behold with your eyes, how I have had but little labour, & yet have found much rest. Oh receive wisdom, & ye shall have plenty of silver and gold in your possession. Let your mind rejoice in her mercy, and be not ashamed of her praise, work her work by times, & she shall give you your reward in due tyme. The prayer of Abacuc the prophet for ignorancies Abacuc. 5. O Lord when I heard speak of thee, than I was afraid. The work that thou hast taken in hand shalt thou perform in his time, O Lord when thy time cometh thou shalt declare it. In thy very wrath thou thinkest upon mercy. The lord God is my strength, he shall make my feet as the feet of an heart, and he which giveth the victory, shall bring me to my high places singing upon psalms. Amen. A prayer of the faithful congregation that they may speak the word of god boldly Actu. 4. Lord thou art god, which hast made heaven and earth, the see and all that in them is, which by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, why did the heathen rage, & the people imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers came together against the Lord and against his Christ. For surely against his holy son jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herode and also Poncius pilate with the paynims and the people of Israel gathered them selves together to do even what so ever thine hands and thy counsel determined before to be done. And now Lord behold their threatenings, and grant unto thy servants with all confidence to speak thy word, & that thou wilt stretch forth thine hand, to th'intent that healing, signs, and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy son jesus. Amen. ¶ A PRAYER UNTO THE Lord jesus for the peax of the church, made by the most excellent clerk Erasmus. Lord jesus Christ which of thine absoluteness madest all creatures both visible and invisible, which of thy godly wisdom governest & settest all things in most goodly order, which of thine unspeakable goodness, keepest, defendest, and furderest all things, which of thy bottomless mercy restorest the decayed, renewest the fallen, raisest the dead, vouchsafe (we pray thee) at last to cast down thy countenance upon thy beloved spouse the church but let it be that amiable and merciful countenance wherewith thou pacifyest all things in heaven, in earth, and that be above heavens and under the earth, vouchsafe to cast upon us those tender and pitiful eyes with which thou once didst behold Petre that great shepherd of thy church, and forthwith he remembered himself and repent, with which eyes, thou once didst view the scattered multitude & wert moved with compassion that for lack of a good shepherd they wandered as sheep dispurpled and strayed asunder. Thou seist (O good shepherd) what sundry sorts of wolves have broken into thy shepecotes, of whom every one crieth, here is Christ, here is Christ, so that if it were possible the very perfect persons should be brought into error. Thou seest with what winds, with what waves, with what storms thy silly ship is tossed, thy ship wherein thy little flock is in peril to be drowned, And what is now left but that it utterly sink and we all perish? Of this tempest and storm we may thank our own wickedness and sinful living, we espy it well and confess it. We espy thy righteousness and we bewail our unrighteousness, but we appeal to thy mercy which (according to the psalm of thy prophet) surmounteth all thy works. We have now suffered much punishment being soused with so many wars, consumed with such losses of goods, scourged with so many sorts of diseases and pestilencies, shaken with so many floods, feared with so many strange sights from heaven, & yet appear there no where any haven or port unto us being thus tired & forlorn amongs so strange evils, but still every day more grievous punishments & more seem to hang over our heads. We complain not of thy sharpness most tender Saviour, but we espy here also thy mercy, uless as much grievouser plagues we have deserved. But O most merciful jesus, we beseech the that thou wilt not consider ne weigh, what is due for our deservings, but rather what becometh thy mercy, without which neither the Angels in heaven can stand sure before thee, much less we silly vessels of clay. Have mercy of us O redeemer which art easy to be entreated, not that we be worthy of mercy, but give thou this glory unto thine own name. Suffer not, that the jews, the Turks, and the rest of paynims, which either have not known thee, or do envy thy glory, should continually triumph over us, and say, where is their god, where is their redeemer, where is their saviour, where is their bridegroom that they thus boast on? These opprobrious words and upbraydinges redounded unto the O lord while by our evils men weigh and esteem thy goodness, they think we be forsaken whom they see not amended. Ones when thou slepst in the ship, and a tempest suddenly arising threatened death to all in the ship, thou awookest at the out cry of a few disciples, and straight weigh at thine almighty word the waves couched, the winds fell, the storm was suddenly turned into a great calm. The dumb waters knew their maker's voice. Now in this far greater tempest, wherein not a few men's bodies be in danger, but innumerable souls, we beseech the at the cry of thy hole church which be in danger of drowning that thou wilt awake. So many thousands of men do cry, lord, save us, we perish. The tempest is past man's power, yea we see that the endeavours of them that would help it do turn clean a contrary weigh. It is thy word that must do the deed Lord Iesu. Only say thou with a word of thy mouth, Cease o tempest, and forthwith shall the desired cawme appear. Thou wouldest have spared so many thousands of most wicked men, if in the city of Sodom had been found but ten good men. Now here be so many thousands of men, which love the glory of thy name, which sigh for the bounty of thy house, & wilt thou not at these men's prayers let go thine anger and remember thine accustomed & old mercies? Shalt thou not with thy heavenly policy turn our folly into thy glory? Shalt thou not turn the wicked men's evils to thy churches good? For thy mercy is wont then most of all to succour when the thing is with us past remedy, and neither the might, nor wisdom of men can help it. Thou alone bringest things that be never so out of order into order again, which art the only author & maintainer of peax. Thou framedst that old confusion which we call Chaos, wherein with out order, without fashion confusely lay the discordant sedes of things, and with a wonderful order the things that of nature fought together thou didst ally and knit in a perpetual band. But how much greater confusion is this, where is no charity, no fidelity, no bonds of love, no reverence neither of laws nor yet of rulers, no agreement of opinions, but as it were in a misordered quere every man singeth a contrary note? Among the heavenly planets is no dissension, all four elements keep their place, every one do their office whereunto they be appointed. And wilt thou suffer thy spouse, for whose sake all things were made, thus by continual discords to perish and go to wreak? Shalt thou suffer the wicked spirits, which be authors & workers of discord to bear such a swing in thy kingdom unchecked? Shalt thou suffer that strong captain of mischief, whom thou once overthrewest, again to invade thy tents & to spoil thy soldiers? When thou wert here a man conversant amongs men, at thy voice fled the devils. Send forth, we beseech the o Lord, thy spirit, which may drive away out of the breasts of all them that profess thy name the wicked spirits, masters of riot, of covetise, of vain glory, of carnal lust, of mischief and of discord. Create in us, O our God and king, a clean heart, and renew thy holy spirit in our breasts pluck not from us thy holy ghost. render unto us the joy of thy saving health, and with thy principal breath strengthen thy spouse and the herdsmen thereof. By this spirit thou reconciledst the earthly to the heavenly, by this thou diddest frame and reduce so many tongues, so many nations, so many sundry sorts of men into one body of a church, which body by the same spirit hangeth to the their head. This spirit, if thou will vouchsafe to renew in all men's hearts, than shall also these foreign miseries cease or if they cease not, at lest they shall turn to the profit & avail of them which love the. Stay this confusion set in order this horrible Chaos (O Lord jesus) let thy spirit stretch out itself upon these waters of evil wavering opinions. And because thy spirit, which according to thy prophets saying containeth all things, hath also the science of speaking, make, that like as unto all them which be of thy house is all one light, one baptism, one God, one hope, one spirit: so they may have also one voice, one note and song, professing one catholic troth. When thou diddest mount up to heaven triumphauntlike thou threwest about from above thy precious things, thou gavest gifts amongs men, thou dealtest sundry rewards of thy spirit. Renew again from above thy old bowntifulnes, give that thing to thy church now fainting and growing downward, that thou gavest unto her shooting up at her first beginning. give unto princes and rulers the grace to stand in awe of thee, that they so may guide the common weal, as they should shortly render accounts unto the that art king of kings, give wisdom to be always assistant unto them, that what so ever is best to be done, they may espy it in their minds and pursue the same in their doings. give to thy bishops the gift of prophecy, that they may declare and interpret holy scripture not of their own brain but of thine inspyring. give them the threefold charity, which thou once demaundedst of Peter what time thou diddest betake unto him the charge of thy sheep. give to thy priests the love of soberness and of chastity. give to thy people a good will to follow thy commandments and a readiness to obey such persons, as thou hast appointed over them. So shall it come to pass, if through thy gift thy princes shall command that thou requirest, if thy pastors and herdsmen shall teach the same, and thy people obey them both, that the old dignity and tranquillity of the church shall return again with a goodly order unto the glory of thy name. Thou sparedst the ninivites appointed to be destroyed as soon as they converted to repentance. And wilt thou despice thy house falling down at thy feet, which in stead of sack cloth hath sighs, and in stead of ashes tears? Thou promisedst forgiveness to such as turn unto thee, but this self thing is thy gift, a man to turn with his hole heart unto thee, to th'intent all our goodness should redound unto thy glory. Thou art the maker, repair thy work that thou hast fashioned. Thou art the redeemer, save that thou hast bought Thou art the Saviour, suffer not them to perish that do hang on the. Thou art the Lord and owner, challenge thy possession. Thou art the head, help thy membres, Thou art the king, give us a reverence of thy laws. Thou art the prince of peax, breath upon us brotherly love. Thou art the god, have pity on thy humble besechers, be thou according to Paul's saying, all things in all men to th'intent the hole quere of thy church with agreeing minds and consonant voices for mercy obtained at thy hands may give thanks to the father, son and holy ghost, which after the most perfect exemple of concord be distincted in property of persons and one in nature, to whom be praise and glory eternally. Amen. A prayer before thou takest bodily sustenance WE wretched & alweis needing bodies, for this meat which thou hast hallowed and given us for the relief and sustentation of our bodies do reverently give thanks unto the O God almighty and heavenly father, beseeching the also here with, to bestow and communicate unto us the meat of Angels, that true heavenly bread, I mean our Lord jesus Christ, so as with him our mind may be fed, and that by his flesh and blood we may be fostered, nourished, and made strong. Amen. A prayer after thou hast taken bodily sustenance Forasmoch as O Lord almighty and most merciful God thou hast with thy gifts liberally fed us and refreshed our bodies: cause that after this repast, we may diligently observe what thing thou wouldest have done by us and what not, and also fulfil and execute in deed the same with a ready and pure mind accordingly, By jesus Christ our Lord. So be it. For spiritual joy. LOrd jesus, thou that art the redeemer & confortor of mankind, which to such as renounce and abhor for love of the all the vain & false pleasures of this world haste prepared by thy holy ghost far better and higher pleasures which the world knoweth not, and dost tempre the grievance and incommodity of this life with inward & privy consolations by renewing unto us ever among some token & ynkling of the bless to come, whereby we being refreshed & recreate might with more cheerful minds run unto the. I beseech the that the anointing of thy holy spirit may evermore shake of from me the weariness of this wretched world and cheer my heart with a blessed and wholesome joy, which said spirit did also anoint the O Lord what time thou wert here conversant amongs us with the oil of joy before thy fellows and brethren which with the father and the same spirit dost live and reign for ever and ever. Amen. For the keeping and defence of a good name and fame. THat wise man which was privy of thy secrets O heavenly father) taught us that an honest fame is a treasure right precious, when he saith, Better it is to have a good name then precious ointments. But this so excellent and good thing we neither can get nor keep but by thy aid and help. Now surely the well and fountaign of a good name is a faultless lief. This therefore in especial we demand and crave of the O Lord almighty. Yet nevertheless forasmoch as oftentimes innocency and faultless living is not enough neither yet a sure buckler & defence namely against such as under their lips bear the poison of serpents, yea & oftentimes it happeneth that when we suppose to be amongs our trusty friends we dwell with Ezechiel amongs scorpions and venomous serpents: we cry with thy holy prophet, O Lord deliver my soul from wicked lips and a guileful tongue. But if nevertheless it be seen to thy goodness to exercise thy servants also with this affliction to th'intent they may the better be brought to godliness & perfection: grant (we the pray) that with Paul thy most valiant Champion we may by reproach and glory by infamy and good name abide still in thy commandments through jesus Christ which also himself when he walked here in earth, was reviled, sklaundered, evil spoken of, and called to his teeth a Samaritane, a wine drinker, a deceiver of the people, and one that had a devil. The same now reigneth with the in glory together which the holy ghost Amen. ❧ THE TABLE OR Contents of this present book first a general confession of sins unto God daily to be said of every Christian person.
