The humble REPRESENTATION AND RESOLUTIONS OF The Officers & Souldiers OF Lieut. general CROMWEL's REGIMENT. Subscribed by the Officers and Souldiers present at the rendezvous of the Regiment near Aldermaston, and presented to his Excellency by Lieutenant John Byfield. London, Printed for Edw. Blackmore at the angel in St. Pauls Church-yard. 1649. To his Excellency Thomas Lord Fairfax, Lord General of all the Parliaments Forces, both in ENGLAND and IRELAND: The humble Representation and Resolutions of the Officers and Souldiers in Lieutenant General CROMWEL'S Regiment. THe manifold experiences we have had of your Excellencies happy Conduct, ever since the goodness of God hath set you over us, and the many signal Victories he hath been pleased to make you instrumental in, unto the twice total subduing of a powerful Enemy; together with our sensibleness of Gods love to this present Parliament, in carrying them through so great and glorious undertakings for the good of this Common-wealth, the benefit of which, we hope all honest men will be sensible of. In consideration of these things, we are at a loss within ourselves, that any generation of men amongst us( especially of such large professions) who have tasted of the same mercies we have done, should now( through the pride and ambition of their hearts) so manifestly deny and disown God, by such an unchristian and unheard of rejection in casting off the authority of this present Parliament and your Excellency, as divers of late have not onely attempted, but also effected. Therefore, we the Officers and Souldiers of Lieutenant General Cromwel's Regiment, do in all humility represent to your excellency, That we have been, and are sadly affencted in our spirits with the thoughts of that horrid and unnatural defection so lately made from the Parliaments and your Excellencies authority: And each of us in particular profess, that we do from our hearts disavow the having any hand, directly or indirectly, in owning or countenancing the Revolt or Capitulation of the twelve Troops of Horse of your Army, or any others, lately or now opposing the Parliaments or your Excellencies authority: And that we neither did, nor do own or countenance any of those late printed papers, which have scandalised the Parliament, council of State, or your Excellencies authority derived from them. And we desire to bless God, who hath enabled your excellency so seasonably to reduce those, who otherwise, by their destructive principles, might have brought confusion upon the Nation. And for the manifestation of our faithfulness and obedience, We do further profess, That we shall, by the grace of God, hazard our lives, and all that is dear unto us, for the preservation of this Parliament( the supreme Authority of the Nation) in settling the just Rights of the People according to their late Acts and Declarations: And while we are Souldiers, we shall cheerfully submit unto your Excellencies authority over us, under them, and to the discipline of the Army now practised amongst us, against any person or persons, that under any notion or pretence whatsoever shall go about to overthrow or destroy the same. And accounting it both our duty and honour to be obedient to your Excellency, in putting in execution your Commands, according to the power and authority given you by Parliament: withall, resolving to use our utmost endeavours to discover all such persons that shall by way of Agitators, or otherwise, endeavour disturbance amongst us, to break the present Government and peace of the Army. And because it hath been rumoured, That this Regiment had an intention to have seized upon the person of the Lieutenant general, in order to the carrying on that rebellious design: We profess, for our parts, we never had the least knowledge of any such thing. And if any person or persons lately amongst us, at any meeting in London or elsewhere, have promised or engaged in the name of the Regiment; any thing tending thereunto, it hath proceeded from the treachery of their own hearts, with whom we leave it; not doubting but God will in due time discover such deeds of darkness: And as we hope our desire of avoidance of such from amongst us, whose principles might led them to such an action, will in some measure vindicate us; so we further add, That as we could not but have accounted it a detestable crime for any part of the Army to have attempted( much more to have done) such an act: so in us( by how much the nearer we stand related to him, as being our Colonel, and of whose fidelity we have had such ample testimony) it would have been most of all wicked and abominable.
