A Looking glass FOR THE OXFORD JVNCTO, And all others that have advised to, or are promoters and fomenters of our present, unnatural, bloody, and destructive dissensions. Being a most serious and seasonable Exhortation both to the KING and Subjects, yet at last to embrace and preserve Peace, and abandon Civill Wars, after so much woeful experience of the miserable effects thereof: With other matters worthy of Consideration. PROV. 12.20. To the councillors of Peace is Joy. MAT. 6.9. Blessed are the Peace-makers, for they shall be called the Children of God. LONDON; Printed by E. P. for Thomas Vere, and are to be sold at his Shop at the upper end of the Old-Bayley. Novemb. 3. 1645. A Looking glass for the OXFORD JUNCTO. THe present deplorable condition of our bleeding and almost expiring kingdom, contriving its own unevitable ruin, by a cruel, Destructive, unnatural Civill war, intended( as the Parliament informs us) by the King( seduced by wicked and pernicious councillors) against the Parliament and kingdom:( Of the truth whereof, wee have now these three yeares past, had to too woeful experience) hath in a manner constrained me,( after much grief of heart, to see three poor kingdoms wallowing in their own blood) to attempt the speedy redress of this transcendent Calamity, by propounding,( to avoid long circumstances) this one most serious and seasonable Proposition, both to the King and kingdom, namely; That it is the bound duty of every good Christian, King, and Subject, to the uttermost of their powers, to preserve and maintain the Peace and prosperity of the kingdoms wherein they live, and to prevent all Civill Warres and dissensions in them. The truth of this most Pious, Profitable, and Excellent Consideration, appears plainly: First, By these general Precepts given by God, both to King and people: seek Peace and pursue it, Psal. 34.14. 1 Pet. 3.11. Follow Peace with all men. Heb. 12.14. As much as in you lieth, live peaceably with all men. Rom. 12.18. Live in Peace, be at Peace among yourselves. 2 Cor. 13.11. Have Peace one with another, Mar. 9.50. Secondly, More particularly by 1 Tim. 1.2. I exhort therefore, that first of all, Prayers, Intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men, for Kings, and for all that are in authority, that we may led a quiet and peaceable life, in all godliness and honesty: Compared with jer. 29.7. And seek the Peace of the city, whether I have caused you to be carried away Captives, and pray unto the Lord for it, for in the Peace thereof, shall ye have Peace. Thirdly, By that Injunction of King David himself, given to all his people by Divine command, Psal. 122, 6, 7, 8. Pray for the Peace of jerusalem, they shall prosper that love thee: Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces. For my Brethren and Companions sake, I will now say, Peace be within thee. Fourthly, By that speech of good Hezechia, Isay 39.8. Good is the word of the Lord which thou hast spoken, for there shall be Peace and Truth in my dayes. Fifthly, By the Titles given to God and Christ in Scripture, where God is oft styled the God of Peace, Rom. 15.33. And Christ the prince and King of Peace, Isay 9.6. red but that excellent exhortation of the Apostle to the Corinthians; Finally my Brethren( saith he) making this the conclusion of all other his fore-going precepts; Be ye perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind: Live in Peace, and the God of Love and Peace shall be with you, 2 Cor. 13.11. add hereunto the seve●all promises of God in Scripture, To give his people Peace in their Land, to bless his people with Peace, to ordain Peace for them, to keep them in perfect Peace, &c. Levit. 26.6. Psal. 29.11. Isay. 26.3. Ezek. 34.25. This was our Saviour Christs own Legacy, Who bequeathed his Peace unto his people, Jo. 14.27. Now if God be a God of Peace, and Christ the Prince and King of Peace, and both of them give and promise nothing but Peace unto their people, then Kings, who are Gods 'vice gerents, and ought to imitate his example, must endeavour to be Kings of Peace, and study to the uttermost to preserve their kingdoms, and Subjects in perfect peace and prosperity, and not to make war against them, but feed, guide, and seek their welfare in the integrity of their hearts. And if it be thus, how then will those desperate Malignant spirits be branded with shane and infamy unto all posterity, who first counseled and still advice His Majesty to maintain a causeless civill war against his Parliament and people? Surely he that speaks best of them, can record them for no better then most unnatural vipers, and Traytors to their Country, desperate Rebels against God, and most execrable wicked persons, for so God himself hath proclaimed them to all the World, Esay, 39, 5.10. They hatch Cockatrice eggs, and wove the Spiders Web, he that eateth of their eggs death, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a Viper, their works are morkes, of iniquity, and the Act of violence is in their hands, their feet run to evil, and they hast to shed innocent blood, th●ir thoughts, are thoughts of iniquity, wasting and destruction is in their paths, the way of peace they know not, and there is no judgement in their goings, they have made them crooked paths, whosoever goeth therein shall not know Peace ▪ and Rom. 3.13.19. Their throat is an open sepulchre, with their tongues they have used deceit, the poison of asps is under their Lips, their Mouth is full of Cursing and bitterness, their feet are swift to shed blood, Destruction and Misery are in their ways, awed the way of Peace they have not known, there is no fear of God before their Eyes. Oh miserable unhappy Princes, who are advised and seduced by such pernicious councillors! O rash inconsiderate wretched people, who are besotted by them, so far as to take up arms against their Native country to become their own, their Brethrens, the Parliaments, and Kingdoms Executioners, and thereby most Horrid and Detestable Traytors. do but consider how quickly this Bloody Tyrant War hath put a period to all our former joys and happiness, Man, created after Gods own Image, destroying the Image of his Creator; Christian, most unchristianly slaughtering his Brother in Christ; nay, Protestants linked by a nearer tie of Religion, oftentimes Massacring those of their own Religion, the Father most unnaturally ripping up the bowels of his son, and the Son of the Father, a Brother beating out his Brothers brains, Kinsman against Kinsman, Friend against Friend, most Barbarously and Unhumanely butchering one another, here a Bullet, there a spear or Poleaxe, separating the soul and Body in the very act of Wrath and Malice, the devouring Cannon heaping the mangled carcases of Horse and Man together. What ghastly looks? What hideous shrickes, and dismal groans? What grisly gaping Wounds of dying men, besmeared with Blood, and Dirt, do even affright and terrify the hearers and spectators, though their Enemies? What Out-cries, tears, and sighs, by new-made widows for their Husbands deaths? What Mournings by aged Parents for their slaughtered sons? Wh●t Lamentation by poor distressed Children made fatherless by War? What Pillaging, coverings, Rapines, Murders, Massacres, by the cruel, Barbarous and Bloody soldier? No liberty left us of Ploughing, Sowing, Trafficking, or Trading one with another. That which the Industrious, and painful Tradesman or Husbandman, hath with much labour and pains gathered together, to be the staff and Comfort of their Age, and a Portion and Provision for their Children, in an instant becomes the Prey and spoil of a few merciless men; And all these Miseries usu●lly seconded by Pestilence and Famine: And God almighty knows how soon it may be our turns to suffer by either or both of the last Judgements, unless we endeavour to prevent the first by applying all our Diligence, Industry, and Affections towatds the procuring of a speedy and happy Peace; I appeal therefore to His majesty, to every English mans, or other Subjects Conscience, and advice them all in the presence of God( as they will answer the contrary at the great approaching day of Judgement) seriously to Consider the premises, and no longer presume to continue in arms against their own dear Native Country that bread them, against the Parliament, who sit night and day, and spend both their Fortunes, Time, and Spirits, to prevent our imminent Dangers, and settle the great and glorious work of a blessed Reformation in this our Land and Nation, against our dear loving Brethren, Kindred, Friends and Countrymen, who never did us the lest Injury, against ourselves, our Children, and Families, which a civill War may quickly ruin. Nor yet to Countenance, justify, or side with those unnatural Vipers, and unreasonable sottish Bruits, who either maliciously, or inconsiderately, foment and promote such an unnatural, impious, fatal, Civill War; but let us all put forth our utmost best endeavours, and poure out our fervent prayers to God, to prevent and cease these civill Combustions, to aid and preserve our dear Native Country, kingdom, Religion, the Parliament, ourselves, and our posterity, against these malignant Incendiaries, who seek their utter destruction. Oh let no true Englishman or Christian bee so degenerous and brutish, as to do such disservice to his country in a few dayes or houres, which he shall with brinish tears repent for ever. And I shall likewise humbly presume, to beseech his majesty, upon the bended knees of my soul, piously to consider the lamentable condition of his poor distressed Subjects, by reason of these distractions, & destructive dissensions: and that then he would be most graciously pleased, according to his Oath, his royal duty, and many repeated Protestations, to preserve his people and Kingdom in a sweet Peace and blessed unity, to disband his present forces and tumultuous Cavaliers, discar'd all bloody councillors who advised him to this most unnatural, unseasonable, dangerous, civill War, to return with speed to London, and close with his great and best council, the Parliament, for the preservation and present aid of bleeding Ireland, the settling and composing of his peoples present fears and distractions, the effecting of a perfect through Reformation and Union in Church and State, the redress of all remaining grievances, the advancement of Truth, of the flourishing estate of his three kingdoms, and his own royal Honour, Revenues, and greatness, which will eternally gain his Majesty the fervent prayers, hearts, affections, purses, and ready service of all his kingdoms and Subjects, together with immortal honour: whereas if he shall still proceed in prosecution of this desperate civill war against his People, kingdom, and Parliament, the guilt of al his Subjects innocent blood, which shall be shed in this unnatural causeless war, will light heavy upon his conscience, be required at his hands: and in conclusion, both himself, his Kingdoms, and loyal people, will be brought to the very extremity of misery, if not to utter ruin, after such a long enjoyed flourishing Peace both under his own and his predecessors peaceable reigns; which most gracious Lord God, wee humbly beseech thee, by thy unspeakable goodness to prevent, and let there be no end of our peace with thy heavenly majesty, with our own consciences, and one with another( King with Parliament, Kingdom and People, and they with King) till Jesus Christ, the Prince of peace, his second coming, who shall give all his everlasting peace, and bliss in his celestial kingdom Amen. This is Printed according to Order.
