Since the Decease of my quondam Master Mr jeremiah Rich J haue taken noe small pains to Reduce his Jncomparable art into a more easy and Expeditious method so that the meanest Capacitys may learn it in a very short space bestowing but one hours Time in a day provided they will but heedfolly observe the Rules that are set before them and proceed orderly, Learnig one Rule thoroughly first, before they go to the next, which they may well afford to do, since the whole is Contrived with so much plainness and Brevity, as might neither clog the memory nor put the understanding upon the rack, it was not first attempted with any thoughts of coming to public view, But seeing that several have highly pretended and Endeavoured to Bring it to something Extraordinary wherein yet their pains hath hethertoin my apprehension failed of that success which the world expected I, have therefore for the Authors sake and the regard I bear to his memory and Excellent Art ventured this small piece to seek its fortune amongst the rest in which I have wholly built vpon his Foundation not endeavouring to overthrow his Ingenious structure, but only add thereunto more Beauty and ornament, and though very many Considerable Improvements have been made, as the i will soon discern yet I have so Designed it, that the New Testament and psalms which are printed in Mr Richs character, may bee red perfectly by those that shall Learn only this, and such as haue learned another method already may yet find much help from this for their further Improvement both as to exact Reading and ready— writing, and therefore desiring the Ingenious practitioner to accept of my Good will herein I rest
