Walsingham, below. HONI SOIT QVI MAL Y PENSE FIDES HUMILITAS A form of prayer with thanks giving, to be used of all the Queen's majesties loving subjects every year, the 17. of November, being the day of her highness entry to her kingdom. Set forth by authority. Imprinted at London by Christopher Barker, printer to the Queen's Majesty. Cum privilegio Regiae Maiestatis. An order for morning prayer to be used, the 17. of November. 1. Tim. 2. vers. 1. I Exhort you therefore, that first of all, prayers, supplications, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men: for Princes, and for all that are in authority, that we may live a quiet and peaceable life, in all godliness and honesty, for that is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour. ¶ You shall understand, that every thing in this book is placed in order, as it shall be used, without turning to and fro, saving the three lessons taken out of the old Testament, of which you may choose any one, as you think best, for the first lesson at this morning prayer. And in Cathedral Churches, the minister may use either of the other two for the first lesson at evening prayer. ¶ First the Minister shall with a loud voice, pronounce some one of these three sentences, as in the book of common prayer. Ezech. 18 AT what time soever a sinner doth repent him of his sin from the bottom of his heart, I will put all his wickedness out of my remembrance, saith the Lord. joel. 2. Rend your hearts, and not your garments, and turn to the Lord your God, because he is gentle and merciful, he is patient, and of much mercy, and such a one that is sorry for your afflictions. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and there is no truth in us. dearly beloved brethren, the scripture moveth us in sundry places, to acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness, and that we should not dissemble nor cloak them before the face of almighty God our heavenly father, but confess them with an humble, lowly, penitent, & obedient heart, to the end that we may obtain forgiveness of the same, by his infinite goodness and mercy. And although we ought at all times humbly to acknowledge our sins before God, yet ought we most chief so to do when we assemble and meet together, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his most holy word, and to ask those things which be requisite and necessary, as well for the body as the soul. Wherefore I pray & beseech you, as many as be here present, to accompany me with a pure heart & humble voice, unto the throne of the heavenly grace, saying after me. A general confession to be said of the whole congregation after the Minister, kneeling. Almighty and most merciful father, we have erred & strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy Laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done, and there is no health in us, but thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us miserable offenders. Spare thou them, O GOD, which confess their faults, restore thou them that be penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy name, Amen. The absolution to be pronounced by the Minister alone. Almighty God, the father of our Lord jesus Christ, which desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness and live, and hath given power & commandment to his ministers, to declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the absolution and remission of their sins, he pardoneth & absolveth all them which truly repent, and unfeignedly believe his holy Gospel. Wherefore we beseech him to grant us true repentance & his holy spirit, that those things may please him which we do at this present, and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure and holy, so that at the last we way come to his eternal joy, through jesus Christ our Lord. The people shall answer, Amen. Then shall the Minister begin the lords prayer with a loud voice. Our father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil, Amen. Then likewise he shall say. O Lord open thou our lips. Answer. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. Minister. O God make speed to save us. Answer. O Lord make haste to help us. Minister. Glory be to the father. etc. As it was in the beginning. etc. Praise ye the Lord. Then shallbe said or sung this Psalm following. O Come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us hearty rejoice in the strength of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving: and show ourselves glad in him with Psalms. For the Lord is a great God: and a great king above all gods. In his hand are all the corners of the earth: and the strength of the hills is his also. The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands prepared the dry land. O come, let us worship and fall down: & kneel before the Lord our maker. For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hands. To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts: as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness. When your fathers tempted me: proved me, and saw my works. Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said: It is a people that do err in their hearts, for they have not known my ways. Unto whom I swore in my wrath: that they should not enter into my rest. Glory be to the father. etc. As it was in the beginning. etc. Domine in virtute. Psalm. 21. THe King shall rejoice in thy strength, O Lord: exceeding glad shall he be of thy salvation. Thou hast given him his heart's desire: and hast not denied him the request of his lips. For thou shalt prevent him with the blessings of goodness: and shalt set a crown of pure gold upon his head. He asked life of thee, and thou gavest him a long life: even for ever and ever. His honour is great in thy salvation: glory and great worship shalt thou lay upon him. For thou shalt give him everlasting felicity: and make him glad with the joy of thy countenance. And why? because the King putteth his trust in the Lord: and in the mercy of the most highest, he shall not miscarry. All thine enemies shall feel thy hand: thy right hand shall find out them that hate thee. Thou shalt make them like a fiery oven in time of thy wrath: the Lord shall destroy them in his displeasure, and the fire shall consume them. Their fruit shalt thou root out of the earth: and their seed from among the children of men. For they intended mischief against thee: and imagined such a device as they are not able to perform. Therefore shalt thou put them to flight: and the strings of thy bow shalt thou make ready against the face of them. Be thou exalted Lord in thine own strength: so will we sing and praise thy power. Benedixisti domine, Psal, 85. LOrd thou art become gracious unto thy land: thou hast turned away the captivity of jacob. Thou hast forgiven the offence of thy people: and covered all their sins. Thou hast taken away all thy displeasure: & turned thyself from thy wrathful indignation. Turn us then, O God our saviour: and let thine anger cease from us. Wilt thou be displeased at us for ever: and wilt thou stretch out thy wrath from one generation to another? Wilt thou not turn again and quicken us: that thy people may rejoice in thee? Show us thy mercy, O Lord: and grant us thy salvation. I will hearken what the Lord God will say concerning me: for he shall speak peace unto his people, & to his saints, that they turn not again. For his salvation is nigh them that fear him: that glory may dwell in our land. Mercy and truth are met together: righteousness and peace have kissed each other. Truth shall flourish out of the earth: and righteousness hath looked down from heaven. Yea, the Lord shall show loving kindness: and our land shall give her increase. Righteousness shall go before him: and he shall direct his going in the way. Nisi quia dominus. Psalm. 124. IF the Lord himself had not been on our side (now may Israel say:) if the Lord himself had not been on our side, when men rose up against us. They had swallowed us up quick: when they were so wrathfully displeased at us. Yea, the waters had drowned us: & the stream had gone over our soul. The deep waters of the proud: had gone even over our soul. But praised be the Lord: which hath not given us over for a pray unto their teeth. Our soul is escaped, even as a bird out of the snare of the fowler: the snare is broken, and we are delivered. Our help standeth in the name of the Lord: which hath made heaven and earth. ¶ The first Lesson, taken out of the xvii. xviii.xix. and xx. Chapters of the second book of the Chronicles. 2. Chr. cha. 17. vers. 1. a. 3. etc. IEhosaphat the son of Asa reigned over juda. And the Lord was with him, because he walked in the former ways of his father David, and sought not Baalim: But sought the Lord God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel. And the Lord established the kingdom in his hand, and all juda brought him presents, so that he had abundance of riches and honour. And he lift up his heart unto the ways of the Lord, and he put down yet more of the high places and groves out of juda. In the third year of his reign, he sent to his Lords, even to Benhail, Obadia, Zacharia, Nethanel, & to Michaia, that they should teach in the cities of juda: And with them he sent Levites, even Semaia, Nethania, Zebadia, Asael, Semiramoth, jehonathan, Adonia, Tobia, and Tobadonia, levites: and with them Elisama and joram, Priests. And they taught in juda, and had the book of the law of God with them, and went about throughout all the cities of juda, and taught the people. And the fear of the Lord fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were round about juda, and they fought not against jehosaphat. 2. Chro. chap. 18. vers. 3. a. & 31. etc. And when jehosaphat, taking part with Achab in his wars against the king of Syria, was in great danger to be slain, he cried unto the Lord, and the Lord helped him, and chased his enemies away from him: but wicked Achab king of Israel, was there slain. 2. Chro. chap. 19 vers. 1.4. a. etc. And jehosaphat came home again in peace to Jerusalem, & dwelled there. And jehosaphat went out to the people from Beerseba to mount Ephraim, and brought them again unto the Lord God of their fathers. And he set judges in the Land, throughout all the strong cities of juda, city by city, and said to the judges, Take heed what ye do: for ye execute not the judgements of man, but of God, which is with you in the judgement. Wherefore now let the fear of the Lord be upon you, and take heed, and be doing the thing that pleaseth him: for there is no unrighteousness with the Lord our God, that he should have any respect of persons, or take rewards. Moreover, in Jerusalem did jehosaphat set of the Levites, and of the Priests, and of the ancient fathers over Israel, in the judgement and cause of the Lord, and they returned again to Jerusalem. And he charged them, saying, Thus shall ye do in the fear of the Lord faithfully, & with a pure heart: What cause soever come to you of your brethren that dwell in their cities, between blood & blood, between law and commandment, between statutes and ordinances: ye shall warn them that they trespass not against the Lord, and so wrath come upon you, and your brethren: thus do, and ye shall not offend. And behold, Amaria the high priest is among you in all matters of the Lord, & Zebadia the son of Ishmael, a ruler of the house of juda for all the kings matters: there be officers of the Levites also before you, take courage to you therefore, and be doing manfully, and the Lord shallbe with such as be good. After this there came an exceeding great army of the Moabites and Ammonites against jehosaphat. And jehosaphat feared, 2. Chro. chap. 20. vers. 1.2.3. a. & set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed fasting throughout all juda. And he, with all juda, a. 5. c. 18. and the inhabitants of Jerusalem prayed, and fell before the Lord, worshipping the lord d. 22. etc. And the enemies fell out amongst themselves, and slew one another, until they were all destroyed. And jehosaphat, and his people, had the spoil of goods, raiment, & jewels, more than they could carry away. And they blessed the Lord, and called the place, The valley of blessing unto this day. And they returned to Jerusalem with great joy & gladness. And the fear of God fell on the kingdoms of all lands, when they had heard that the Lord fought against the enemies of Israel. And so the Realm of jehosaphat was in tranquillity, and his God gave him rest on every side. Or this may be the first Lesson. The history of King Hezekia, taken out of the fourth book of Kings, the 18.19. and 20. Chapters. 4. Reg. chap. 18. a. 1.3. HEzekia the son of Ahaz reigned over juda, and he did that which is right in the sight of the Lord, according to all as did David his father. verse 4 He put away the high places, and broke the Images, and cut down the groves, and all to broke the brazen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn sacrifice to it, verse 5 and he called it Nehustan. He trusted in the Lord God of Israel, so that after him was none like him among all the Kings of juda, neither were there any such before him. verse 6 For he clave to the Lord, & departed not from him, but kept his commandments which the Lord commanded Moses. And the Lord was with him, verse B. 7 so that he prospered in all things which he took in hand: and he resisted the King of Assyria, verse B. 13 and served him not. Therefore in the fourteenth year of king Hezekia, did Sennacherib King of Assyria come up against all the strong cities of juda, verse C. 17. 18 and took them. And he sent word to King Hezekia by his captain Rabsakeh, verse 19 who said, Tell Hezekia, thus saith the great king, even the king of Assyria, What confidence is this thou hast? or on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me? If ye say, Ye trust in the Lord our God, is not that he, whose high places, and whose altars Hezekia hath put down? And Rabsakeh stood and cried unto the jews that stood upon the walls, verse E. 28 with a loud voice, saying, Hear the words of the great King, even the King of Assyria, verse 29 Thus saith the King, Let not Hezekia beguile you, for he shall not be able to deliver you out of my hands: verse 30 Neither let Hezekia make you to trust in the Lord, saying, The Lord shall surely deliver us, and this city shall not be given over into the hands of the King of Assyria. verse 32 Hearken not unto Hezekia, for he beguileth you, saying, The Lord shall deliver us. verse 33 Hath every one of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the King of Assyria? verse 34 Where is the God of Hamath, of Arphad, and where is the God of Sepharuaim, Hena, and jua? did they deliver Samaria out of mine hands? verse 35 And what god is among all the gods of the nations, that hath delivered his land out of mine hand? Shall the Lord deliver Jerusalem out of mine hand? 4. Reg. 19 vers. 1. a. When king Hezekia heard of these words, he rend his clothes, and put on sackcloth, and came into the house of the Lord, and sent Eliakim, verse 2 which was the Steward of the household, and Sobna the Scribe, and the Elders of the Priests clothed in sack, to Isai the Prophet, the son of Amos: verse 3 And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekia: This day is a day of tribulation, and of rebuke and blasphemy. verse 4 Peradventure the Lord thy God will hear all the words of Rabsakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to rail on the living God, and to rebuke him with words which the Lord thy God hath heard: and life thou up thy prayer for the remnant that are left. verse 5 So the servants of King Hezekia came to Isai. verse 6 And Isai said unto them, So shall you say to your master, Thus sayeth the Lord, Be not afraid of the words which thou hast heard, with which the young men of the king of Assyria have railed on me. Behold, verse B. 7. I will put him in another mind, and he shall hear tidings, and so return to his own land, and I will bring to pass that he shall fall upon the sword, even in his own land. verse 9 And when Sennacherib had word that Thirhaka King of Ethiopia, was come out to fight against him, he departed, & sent messengers unto Hezekia, verse 10 saying, Thus speak to Hezekia king of juda, saying, Let not thy God deceive thee, in whom thou trustest, saying, Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria. Behold, verse 11 thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, how they have utterly destroyed them: verse 14 and shalt thou escape? And Hezekia received the letter of the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekia went up into the house of the Lord, and laid it abroad before the Lord. verse 15 And Hezekia prayed before the Lord, and said, O Lord God of Israel, which dwellest between the Cherubims, thou art God alone over all the kingdoms of the earth, thou hast made heaven and earth. verse 16 Lord bow down thine ear, and hear: open Lord thine eyes (I beseech thee) and see, and hear the words of Sennacherib which hath sent (this man) to rail on the living God. verse 17 Of a truth Lord, the kings of Assyria have destroyed nations, and their lands, verse 18 and have set fire on their gods: for they are no gods, but the work of the hands of man, even of wood and stone: and they destroyed them. verse 19 Now therefore, O Lord our God, I beseech thee, save thou us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou only art the Lord God. verse 20 And Isai the son of Amos sent to Hezekia, saying, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel: That which thou hast prayed me concerning Sennacherib King of Assyria, I have heard it. Wherefore thus saith the Lord concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come to this city, verse E. 32. nor shoot an arrow into it, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it, verse 33 but shall go back again the way he came, & shall not come into this city, saith the Lord. For I will defend this city to save it, verse 34 for mine own sake, & for David my servants sake. verse 35 And the self same night the angel of the Lord went out, and smote in the host of the Assyrians, an hundred fourscore and five thousand, & when the remnant were up early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses. verse 36 And so Sennacherib king of Assyria avoided and departed, & went again and dwelled at Ninive. verse 37 And as he was in a temple worshipping Nisroch his god, Adramelech and Saresar, his own sons smote him with the sword, and they escaped into the land of Armenia, & Asarhaddon his son reigned in his stead. 4 Reg. 20. chap. vers. 1. a. About that time was Hezekia sick unto death, & the Prophet Isai the son of Amos came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Put thine household in an order, verse 2 for thou shalt die, and not live: and Hezekia turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the Lord, saying, verse 3 I beseech thee (O Lord) remember now how I have walked before thee in truth, & with a perfect heart, & have done that which is good in thy sight, and Hezekia wept sore. verse 4 And afore Isai was gone out into the middle of the court, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, verse 5 Turn again and tell Hezekia the captain of my people, Thus sayeth the Lord God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, and seen thy tears, and behold, I will heal thee, so that on the third day thou shall go up to the house of the Lord. verse 6 And I will add unto thy days yet fifteen years, and I will deliver thee and this city, out of the hand of the king of Assyria, and will defend this city, for mine own sake, and for David my servants sake. verse 7 And isaiah said, Take a lump of dried figs: & they took and laid it on the sore, and he recovered, and had exceeding much honour and riches. Or this may be the first Lesson. The sum of the history of king josia, taken out of the fourth book of the Kings, the 22. and 23. Chapters, and the 2. of the Chronicles, the 34. Chapter. 2. Chronic. Cham 34. vers. 1.2. a IOsia reigned in Jerusalem, & he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the ways of David his father, and bowed neither to the right hand, nor to the left. verse 3 In the eight year of his reign, when he was yet a child, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge juda and Jerusalem from the high places, groves, carved images, and images of metal. verse 4 And they broke down the altars of Baalim, even in his presence, and other images that were in greater honour than they, he caused to be destroyed: and the groves, carved images, and images of metal, he broke, and made dust of them, and strawed it upon the graves of them that had offered to them. And he burned the bones of the Priests upon the altars of them, verse 5 and cleansed juda & Jerusalem. And in the eighteenth year of his reign, 4. Reg. 22. chap vers. 3.4. a. when he had purged the land & the temple, he sent Saphan the Scribe to Helkia the high Priest, that he should see the decayed places of the temple repaired, with such money as the keepers of the porch of the house of the Lord had gathered of the people. verse a. 5. 6. And Helkia, verse B. 8. 9 10. as he was about the kings commandment, found in the temple the book of the law of the Lord, and delivered it unto Saphan, who brought it unto the king, and read in it before him. verse 11. 12. When the king had heard the words of the book of the law, he rend his clothes, & commanded Helkia the priest, with certain others, saying, Go ye, and inquire of the Lord for me, and for the people, and for all juda, verse 13 concerning the words of the book that is found, for great is the wrath of the Lord that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not harkened to the words of this book, to do according to all that which is written therein for us. So Helkia the high Priest, verse 14 with others, went unto Hulda the prophetess: and they communed with her. And she answered them, verse 15 Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Tell the man that sent you to me, Thus saith the Lord, Behold, verse 16 I will bring evil upon this place, and on the inhabiters thereof, even all the words of the book, which the king of juda hath read, verse 17 because they have forsaken me, and have burnt incense to other gods, to anger me with all the works of their hands: my wrath therefore is kindled against this place, and shall not be quenched. But to the king of juda, verse 18 which sent you to ask counsel of the Lord, so shall ye say, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, verse 19 Because thine heart did melt, and because thou hast humbled thyself before the Lord, when thou heardest what I spoke against this place, & against the inhabiters of the same, how that they should be destroyed and accursed, and hast rend thy clothes, and wept before me, that I also have heard, sayeth the Lord. verse 20 Behold therefore, I will receive thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be put into thy grave in peace, and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place: And they brought the king word again. 4. Reg. cha. 23. vers. 1. a. And then the king sent, and there gathered together unto him all the Elders of juda, and of Jerusalem. verse 2 And the king went up into the house of the Lord, with all the men of juda, and all the inhabiters of Jerusalem, with the Priests and Prophets, and all the people, both small and great: and he read in the ears of them all the words of the book of the covenant, which was found in the house of the Lord. verse 3 And the king stood by a pillar, and made a covenant before the Lord, that they should walk after the Lord, and keep his commandments, his witnesses, and his statutes, with all their heart, and with all their soul, and make good the words of the said covenant that were written in the foresaid book: and all the people consented to the covenant. verse 4 And the King commanded Helkia the high Priest, and the inferior Priests, and the keepers of the ornaments, to bring out of the temple of the Lord, all the vessels that were made for Baal, for the groves and for all the host of heaven: and he burnt them without Jerusalem in the fields of Cedron, and carried the ashes of them into Bethel. verse 5 And he put down the Priests of Baal, whom the kings of juda had founded to burn incense in the high places and cities of juda, that were round about Jerusalem, and also them that burned incense unto Baal, to the Sun, to the Moon, to the Planets, & to all the host of heaven. And moreover, all workers with spirits, verse 24 and soothsayers, images, idols, and all the abominations that were spied in the land of juda, and in Jerusalem: these did josia put out of the way, to perform the words of the law, which were written in the book that Helkia the Priest found in the house of the Lord. verse 25 Like unto him was there no king before him, that turned to the Lord with all his heart, with all his soul, & all his might, according to all the law of Moses, neither after him arose there any such as he. Te Deum. WE praise thee, O God: we knowledge thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship thee: the father everlasting. To thee all angels cry aloud: the heavens and all the powers therein. Thou sittest on the right hand of God: in the glory of the father. We believe that thou shalt come: to be our judge. We therefore pray thee help thy servants: whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with thy saints: in glory everlasting. Vouchsafe, O Lord: to keep us this day without sin. O Lord have mercy upon us: have mercy upon us. O Lord let thy mercy lighten upon us: as our trust is in thee. O Lord in thee have I trusted: let me never be confounded. The second Lesson, taken out of the Epistle of S. Paul to the Romans, the xiii. Chapter. LEt every soul be subject unto the higher powers: for there is no power but of God: and the powers that be, are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist, shall receive to themselves judgement. For Princes are not to be feared for good works, but for evil. Wilt thou then be without fear of the power? do well: so shalt thou have praise of the same. For he is the minister of God for thy wealth: but if thou do evil, fear: for he beareth not the sword for nought: for he is the minister of God to take vengeance on him that doth evil. Wherefore ye must be subject, not because of wrath only, but also for conscience sake. For, for this cause ye pay also tribute: for they are Gods ministers, applying themselves for the same thing. Give to all men therefore their duty: tribute, to whom ye own tribute: custom, to whom custom: fear, to whom fear: honour, to whom ye own honour. Own nothing to any man, but to love one another: for he that loveth another, hath fulfilled the Law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet: and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, even in this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love doth not evil to his neighbour: therefore is love the fulfilling of the Law. And that, considering the season, that it is now time that we should arise from sleep: for now is our salvation nearer, than when we believed it. The night is past, and the day is at hand: let us therefore cast away the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light, So that we walk honestly, as in the day: not in gluttony, and drunkenness, neither in chambering and wantonness, nor in strife and envying: But put ye on the Lord jesus Christ, and take no thought for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts of it. Or the C. Psalm. O Be joyful in the Lord all ye lands: serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord he is God, it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves: we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and speak good of his name. For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting: and his truth endureth from generation to generation. Glory be to the father. etc. As it was in the beginning. etc. I Believe in God the father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in jesus Christ his only son our Lord, which was conceived by the holy ghost, borne of the virgin Marie, suffered under Ponce Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried, he descended into hell, the third day he rose again from the dead, he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the father almighty, from thence shall he come to judge the quick & the dead. I believe in the holy ghost, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. And after that, these prayers following, aswell at Evening prayer, as at Morning prayer, all devoutly kneeling. The Minister first pronouncing with a loud voice. The Lord be with you. People. And with thy spirit. Minister. Let us pray. Lord have mercy upon us. Christ have mercy upon us. Lord have mercy upon us. Our father which art in heaven. etc. Minister. O Lord show thy mercy upon us. The Epistle. 1. Pet. 2.11. dearly beloved, I beseech you, as strangers & pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which fight against the soul, verse 12 And have your conversation honest among the Gentiles, that they which speak evil of you as of evil doers, may by your good works which they shall see, glorify God in the day of the visitation. verse 13 Submit yourselves unto all manner ordinance of man for the lords sake, whether it be unto the king, as unto the superior, Or unto governors, verse 14 as unto them that are sent of him, for the punishment of evil doers, and for the praise of them that do well. verse 15 For so is the will of God, that by well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of the foolish men, As free, verse 16 & not as having the liberty for a cloak of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. Honour all men: verse 17 love brotherly fellowship: fear God: honour the King. The Gospel. Mat. 22.16. ANd they sent unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, & teachest the way of God truly, neither carest for any man: for thou considerest not the person of men. Tell us therefore, verse 17 how thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Cesar, or not? But jesus perceived their wickedness, verse 18 and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? verse 19 Show me the tribute money. And they brought him a penny. And he said unto them, verse 20 Whose is this image & superscription? They said unto him, Caesar's. verse 21 Then said he unto them, Give therefore to Cesar, the things which are Caesar's, and give unto God, those things which are Gods. And when they heard it, verse 22 they marveled, & left him, and went their way. I Believe in one God the father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, & of all things visible & invisible: and in one Lord jesus Christ, the only begotten son of God, begotten of his father before all worlds, God of God, light of light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the father, by whom all things were made: who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the holy ghost, of the virgin Marie, and was made man, & was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered, and was buried, and the third day he rose again, according to the scriptures, & ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of the father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead: whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the holy ghost, the Lord and giver of life, who proceedeth from the father and the son, who with the father & the son together is worshipped and glorified, who spoke by the Prophets. And I believe one Catholic and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead, & the life of the world to come. Amen. Mat. 5. LEt your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your father which is in heaven. Let us pray for the whole state of Christ's Church, militant here in earth. Almighty and everliving God, which by thy holy apostle hast taught us to make prayers & supplications, & to give thanks for all men: we humbly beseech thee, most mercifully to receive these our prayers, which we offer unto thy divine majesty, beseeching thee to inspire continually the universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord: and grant that all they that do confess thy holy name, may agree in the truth of thy holy word, & live in unity and godly love. We beseech thee also to save and defend all Christian kings, princes and governors, and specially thy servant Elizabeth our Queen, that under her we may be godly and quietly governed. And grant unto her whole counsel, and to all that be put in authority under her, that they may truly and indifferently minister justice, to the punishment of wickedness and vice, and to the maintenance of God's true religion and virtue. Give grace (O heavenly father) to all Bishops, Pastors, & Curates, that they may both by their life & doctrine set forth thy true and lively word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments. And to all thy people give thy heavenly grace, and especially to this congregation here present, that with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear and receive thy holy word, truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life. And we most humbly beseech thee of thy goodness (O Lord) to comfort and succour all them which in this transitory life be in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. Grant this, O father, for jesus Christ's sake our only mediator and advocate. Amen. Almighty God, which hast promised to hear the petitions of them that ask in thy sons name, we beseech thee mercifully to incline thine ears to us that have made now our prayers and supplications unto thee, and grant that those things which we have faithfully asked, according to thy will, may effectually be obtained, to the relief of our necessity, & to the setting forth of thy glory, through jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his son jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God almighty, the father, the son, and the holy ghost, be among you, and remain with you always, Amen. A thanksgiving, to be sung as the 81. Psalm. BE light and glad, in God rejoice, which is our strength and stay: Be joyful and lift up your voice, for this most happy day. Sing, sing, O sing unto the Lord, with melody most sweet: Let heart and tongue in one accord, as it is just and meet. 2 Sing laud unto the Lord above, serve him with glad intent: O clap your hands in sign of love, for this which he hath sent. Sing praise, sing praise with Harp and Lute, with joy let us be seen: Before our God let none be mute, but laud him for our Queen. 3 Sound out the trump courageously, blow as on solemn days: Both high and low come fill the sky, with sweet resounding praise. For why? when we were bound in thrall, and eke in grief did stand, The Lord did set us free from all, by this his servants hand. 4 Ourselves therefore we wholly bind, a Sacrifice to be, In token of our thankful mind (O God most dear) to thee. To thee we cry, and also give most high thanks, laud and praise, For thy good gifts which we receive, both now and all our days. 5 When we in grief did cry and call, thou holpst us by and by, And thou didst set us free from thrall, O God, our God most high. Thy mercy therefore will we sing, and praise thy holy name, For working of so great a thing: O Lord preserve the same. 6 Blessed art thou, O Lord of hosts, our shield and buckler tried: Thy name be praised in all the coasts, throughout the world so wide. Vouchsafe this inward sacrifice, to thee (O Lord) we call: Our hearty thanks do not despise, we yield our souls and all. 7 For thou through love, when we were lost, didst send to seek therefore: This silly bark of ours so tossed, thou broughtstfull safe to shore. When we through blindness went astray, with burdens sore oppressed, Thou sent'st and set us in the way, that leads us to thy rest. 8 We praise thee therefore Lord on high, with heart and hearty cheer: To thee we sing, we call, we cry, O Lord our God most dear. Thou art the worker of our wealth, our safeguard and our stay: O Lord grant this our country health, on thee we wait always. The second part. 9 To thee (O God) we yield all praise, thou art our help alone: To thee it is we sing always, to thee and else to none. Then bow to us (good Lord) thine ear, and hear us when we cry: Preserve thy Church now planted here, and watch it with thine eye. 10 Lord keep Elizabeth our Queen, defend her in thy right: Show forth thyself as thou hast been, her fortress and her might. Preserve her grace, confound her foes, and bring them down full low: Lord turn thy hand against all those, that would her overthrow. 11 Maintain her sceptre as thine own, for thou hast placed her here: And let this mighty work be known, to nations far and near. A noble ancient Nurse, O Lord, in England let her reign: Her grace among us do afford, for ever to remain. 12 Endue her (Lord) with virtues store, rule thou her royal Rod: Into her mind thy Spirit power, and show thyself her God. In truth upright, Lord guide her still, thy Gospel to defend: To say and do what thou dost will, and stay where thou dost end. 13 Her counsel (Lord) vouchsafe to guide, with wisdom let them shine, In godliness for to abide, as it becometh thine. To seek the glory of thy name, their country's wealth procure, And that they may perform the same, Lord grant thy Spirit pure. 14 So will we sing unto thee, Lord, betime yer day be light: And eke declare thy truth abroad, when it doth draw to night. To thee, O Father, with the Son, and Spirit be therefore, All glory now, as hath been done, from henceforth evermore. Amen. FINIS. An Anthem or prayer for the preservation of the Church, the Queen's Majesty, and the Realm, to be sung after Evening prayer at all times. Save Lord and bless with good increase, Thy Church, our Queen and Realm in peace. AS for thy gifts we render praise, So Lord we crave still blessed days, Let thy sweet word & Gospel pure, With us dear God for aye endure. With prosperous reign increase it still, That sound thereof the world may fill. Save Lord and bless with good increase, Thy Church, our Queen and Realm in peace. That vine thy Right hand planted hath Preserve, O Lord, from enemy's wrath, And those that practise Zion's spoil, With mighty arm (Lord) give them foil. Thy Church and Kingdom, Christ, we pray, Increase and build from day to day. Save Lord and bless with good increase, Thy Church, our Queen and Realm in peace. Like as thy grace our Queen hath sent, So bless her Rule and government. Thy glory chiefly to maintain, And grant her long and prosperous Reign: All foes confound, and Rebels eke, That Prince or Church's harm would seek. Save Lord and bless with good increase, Thy Church, our Queen and Realm in peace. This English Isle, and people all, Preserve for Christ's blood we call. Grant peace t' enjoy thy blessings now, Because none fighteth for us but thou, So shall we live to praise thee then, Which likewise grant. Amen, Amen. Save Lord and bless with good increase, Thy Church, our Queen and Realm in peace. A song of rejoicing for the prosperous Reign of our most gracious Sovereign Lady Queen Elizabeth. Made to the tune of the 25. Psalm. Give laud unto the Lord, And praise his holy name: O let us all with one accord Now magnify the same. Due thanks unto him yield, Who evermore hath been So strong defence, buckler, and shield, To our most Royal QUEEN. ANd as for her this day, Each where about us round, Up to the Sky right solemnly The bells do make a sound. Even so let us rejoice Before the Lord our King, To him let us now frame our voice With cheerful hearts to sing. HEr majesties intent, By thy good grace and will, Ever O Lord hath been most bend Thy Law for to fulfil. Quite thou that loving mind, With love to her again: Unto her as thou hast been kind O Lord so still remain. Extend thy mighty hand Against her mortal foes: Express & show that thou wilt stand, With her against all those. Nigh unto her abide, Uphold her Sceptre strong: Eke grant with us a joyful guide, She may continue long. I. C. AMEN. Imprinted at London by Christopher Barker, Printer to the Queen's Majesty.
