London's New Wonder: Or, The Great SLEEPER: Being a Strange, but True RELATION OF The First, Second, and Third Trance of A Young-man at Mr. Kates's House, a Sugar-Baker in Water-Lane, near Tower-street: With the manner how he was brought from henly upon Thames, to the City of London, by the Art of Spirits, the manner how he hath lain during nine or ten days sleep; the several Speeches made unto him, Desiring him, In the Name of God, to speak; the Signs and Wonders which he presented to the People, by his own hands, when he awaked; and the most rare and memorable Speech, being an Example to this, and future Generations, proceeding from a poor Creature, after a long and wonderful Trance. As also, the appearance of a young Child with two Tongues, three Heads, and upon each head a Crown; and other Remarkable Passages, touching the sinking and rising of a great three in Essex every sixth hour; and what hath lately happened near the Bottle of Hay, betwixt London & Islington, by a Gentlewoman disguised in Mans Apparel, in relation to the Gentry, and Good People of this Nation.  
Whereunto is annexed, The Worlds WONDER; Being a true Relation of the strange and dreadful Apparitions seen in the Air, on Tuesday last was seven-night, at New-Market-Heath, and in the Western Parts: Wherein you might discern the Flaming-Sword, the Fiery Dragon, Sparkling-Coals, Burning-Beams, Beating of Drums, Sounding of Trumpets, and a Desperate Conflict between two Armies.  
Likewise, the presenting of the Earth with a mighty Thunder-Bolt, much like unto the Shell of a Great Granado; and the taking of it up, and carrying it to Justice Fosters, where many hundreds of People resort to see it, to the great admiration of all that behold it.  
As also, the strange and wonderful Ringing of the Bells, by four White Spirits in the perfect Shape of Men, at Ferry-Briggs in York-shire, on the first of this instant March, betwixt 12 and one of the Clock in the Morning. With the Minister, Clerk, and others going to them, demanding, In the Name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, What they meant, and what their Business was? With the Answer which proceeded from a Voice, and the manner how they vanished.

AMongst the rest of the great Wonders in this our Age, precedent times may parallel these, which now causeth as much astonishment, as admiration; and as great Wonder, as incredulity by some; yet let such of the Sons of men know, that as the Divine Hand of the Most High Livi●g God, hath been all-sufficiently presented from his Eternal Tabernacle, to his Earthly Foot-stool; so hath his abundant mercies, accompanied the ●●fl●ences of his Judgments, depending upon the Creature; For if we lo●k back, and take a view of the bloody Transactions of Queen Mary, died so high in their distinctive Scarlet rays; yet in the dayes of Queen Eliz●beth this bloody Tragedy was changed into a glorious and splended Comedy; when Religion flourished, true sovereignty Reigned, and due obedience from the people prostrated; In whose glorious and happy dayes, great was the Wonders which then appeared; and amongst the rest, this is as observable, as memorahle, that during her Majesties Reign, a Gentleman in the Tower of London, being visited by some alliance and acquaintance, desired their company, and to present them with a Collation, by way of a festual accommodation; but during the time of preparation, he sit●ing in a Chair,( and a shoulder of Mutton at fire,) fell in a deep Trance, continuing so for the space of 21. dayes; to the great grief of his friends, who at the last communicated his condition to Queen Elizabeth: Which soon produced her Royal determinations, that during his Trance, one shoulder should be laid down raw, as another was roasted; insomuch, that upon his awaking from this long slumber, he asked, whether, the meat was roasted, and where his friends was? Answer was made, Gone; but they would wait upon him very suddenly, &c. In like manner; a president as great, and credible; as the Report of people extends to, which hath happened in these our Revolutions, and mutations of Times, viz. That a young-Youth being strangely conveyed from henly upon Thames, to the City of London, by the mysterious Art of Spirits, was by Divine Providence cast into a Gentlemans house in Water-lane near Tower-street, where Providence so protected him, that in a short time he received Sanctuary under the Wings of Charity, at Mr. Kates house a Sugar-Baker; where it pleased God, that after abundance of care and clemency extended towards the Creature, he fell into two Trances; the one continuing for the space of two Dayes, and two Nights; the other thre● Dayes, and three Nights; after which, a short time produced a third; and this, more sad and dismal then the former; for, during the space of eight dayes, no appearance of life, but a little breathing, beating of the Pulses, working of the Vitals, and seeming as it were between hot and could: insomuch, that many Doctors, and other●, frequenting the place, delivered in their several Judgments; some concerning the lethargy; others, that he lay under an evil tongue; but none could find out the true cause: yet it pleased the great physician of all, the Omnipotent God of Heaven, on Saturday last in the fore-noon, to raise him( in some measure) from this Bed of silence, and so restore him to a further sense of life( as evidently appears by his taking of a little sustenance in a spoon; looking very swa●thy, like a Tawny-moore, and with great black eyes of no such magnitude;) at which time, some Christians then present, spake to him, desiring, In the name of God, that he would speak his mind; to which, he was silent, making several signs and tokens to the people with his hands; and so at present remaines in that condition; which reminds me of another young-man, that had( for the space of 14: dayes lain in a Trance, and upon the 15th. day, awakening, called for a Bible, in which he red a whole Chapter; the Context, citing to repentance, and amendment of life; a reproof for sin, and an Exhortation to Obedience, and to do, as they would be done unto; The Golden Rule; A glorious Expressions from an illiterate Creature, who before that time, never red a word in the book. The next thing, as Report says, is a Wonder of as large a latitude, as the precedents are of magnitude; which is thus: A three of great groat descending into the ground every six hours, and ascending again above the earth at the 12th. hour, at Reynam in Essex; which is wonderful for man to behold; but not impossible for God to denote and set forth. Nay more, it is said, that a young boy is now born, that hath three heads, two tongues, and upon each head a Crown; but what this denotes, I cannot resolve: Yet thus much be assured, th● within these few dayes a Gentlewoman( in mans apparel,) took up her lodging near the Bottle of Hay, between London and Islington; and as it's said, full-fraught both with Gold, Silver, and Jewels; together with something to declare but death seizing her body, before she could present the world with her Embassise, I must decline particulars.  

TO pass by the Controversies of these Latter-Times, so highly disputed both in Ink & Blood, and the many eminent and visible Signs, which have appeared( as it were) from the Windows of Heaven, to the Sons of Men, give us leave, a little, to enter into the sad Contemplations of Englands prestent estate & condition, and compare it with precedent Ages, when through her Blindness and Iniquity, she remained obstinate and wilful, refusing to have her averseness preached by a Divine Hand, and to have her Tyrannical Lordlyness subverted, and equally poised within the balance of the Peoples Freedoms: Which is doubtless so much the greater, by how much the less we are sensible of the severe Hand of GOD upon Us. For not many years since, clear it was to the Spirits of many precious Saints, who perspicuously discerned a visible Signal of the Great Jehovah's Favour and Goodness towards his People, even by the Eye of Faith, obviously piercing through many dark Clouds, and dreadful Comets, in the same Juncture of Time, when specious pretences of Reformation, or New-Lights, or Glorious Days, took its extent and Latitude from the Scottish Territories; yet even then, and at that very time, had the People great reason to suspect, that the Candles of the Gospel was either in danger to be quiter extinguished, or at least burnt very dimly amongst them, & did too apparently dwindle. For to begin with that which should be most dear unto a Nation,( the establishment of Religion in its purity and lustre, and the liberties of the people in their pristine Freedoms) who is not sensible how these two precious Jewels hath been surprised by profane, sacrilegious, mercenary, and Prelatical hands; whilst the Name of the Gospel, and Reformation, hath been used as a Stalking-horse, to disguise & palliate the blackest designs the Sun ever looked upon. But I shall not deviate too far from the intended su●●ect; nor exspatiate far, in representing you with some memorable Comets, or Exhalations in the Air,( commonly called Blazing-Stars) & the first that presents itself to view, is that which appeared in the year, 1618. in the Reign of King James, to the great admiration and terror of many that beholded it, by reason of the magnitude of its proportion, and the height of its situation. Of which many of the Learned, have written large Treatises; but for more general satisfaction, be pleased to take this memorable Passage, which is well-worthy your observation, viz.  
That his Majesty upon the first of Novemb. going from White-Hall to New-Market, in the year aforesaid, delighting himself with the Recreations of Hawking & Hunting; and the Courtiers being likewise reveling, News was brought of this dreadful sight, and Summons from Heaven; for although Thunder seems terrible to many, yet a Comet or Blazing-Star, doth speak more peculiarly unto Kings and Princes; which incited his Majesty to sand for some Learned Mathematicians from the University of Cambridge, to satisfy him touching the future Events, &c. Whereupon Dr. Cumbers, Dr. Mansel, and some others, attended his Maj. at Court, desiring to be excused, in delivering their Opinions upon so high a Point. Whereupon his Majesty gave this Construction, in the words following: 
Gentlemen,  
THe Body of this Great Star is over Germany, and it denounceth much War and desolation to that Nation; but the tail of the Star is over my Dominions and Territories; and the Sting, the Sting, ( laying his hand upon his breast, twice expressing the same) is in the Tail, denoting, That the greatest smart of it, and the sharpest execution of all, will chiefly centre, and have its primarily influence upon Me, or my Children.   
How true this Prophetical-Presage hath fallen out, the World may judge by its Scarlet-Die.  
But to return, from whence I have digressed, I shall proceed to that Direful echo, which which, was heard in the Air at Newmarket, on Tuesday last was seven night, where many of the Inhabitants thereabouts were much astonished, especially at the dreadful noise of Drums beating, and Trumpets sounding, which caused as great astonishment, as wonder; by reason they saw no Warlike Bands visible at present: Yet no sooner had this echo possessed them with various Ruminations, but immediately they began to discern several Warlike Troops and Companies, arraying themselves in Battalia; and after some pickeering, and volleys presented between several Parties, as it were Forlorn-Hopes, the two main Bodies joined battle, disputing very puissantly, and with great vigour. During this Engagement, there seemed to be an extraordinary Light, and glittering of Swords, and Men in armor, which continued for the space of half an hour; and then the one seemed to vanquish the other, taking their pursuit towards the City of London.  
And as this was no small terror to the Beholders, so was the succeeding Thunder as great a Wonder to the Spectators, who after sundry great Claps from an Angry God, even like unto an Enemies Warning-Piece, presented to the Earth a mighty Thunder-bolt, much like unto the Shell of a great Granado; which was taken up and carried to Justice Fosters house near adjacent, where it now lies, and is there to be seen at this day; as it was affirmed by Captain Neilson, the Norfolk Post, and some others, who came to London, and lodged at the Sign of the Ram-Inne, in West-Smithfield.  
It is observable, That not long after this Wonder from Heaven, had presented itself to the Inhabitants of the Earth, but a bright Star of a great Magnitude ▪ was seen glittering and sparkling up and down, ●ven like unto that in the West; whose Lustre was of so large an Extent, and appeared so conspicuous, That although the Air was dark, yet bright and serene were the glorious Rays which streamed forth by its great splendour, as if the Heavens received all its Serenes from its illustrious influences. This Star was seen for the space of two Nights constantly about ten of the Clock: yet in several Forms; as sometimes like a fiery Dragon; sometimes like a flaming Sword; and sometimes in an Oval Form, casting forth a round flamme as big as a bushel, and divers sparkling Coals.  
This strange sight did wonderfully affright the Beholders, who with relenting Spirits; do much reflect upon themselves, and leave the event thereof unto GOD; unto whom alone is known the Wonders, in the depth of the Seas, and in the height of the Heavens.  
The next thing that presents itself to public view, is, a Wonder as great as any before cited, which happened on the first of this instant March, at Ferry-Bridges in Yorkshire, within two miles of Pontefract; the manner thus: Between 12 and one of the Clock in the morning, the Minister, Sexton, Clerk, and some others, received an alarm, by ringing of the Bells in the Steeple; who being somewhat astonished thereat, repaired forthwith to the Church; and going up into the Belfree, there appeared 4 visible shapes of men, with a Candle burning, sticking against the Wall: Whereupon the Minister bare up to them, saying: In the Name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; From whence come you, what is your ●●siness? and what make you here? A Voice answered, We come to reprove you of Sin and Back-sliding. Therefore, Repent, Repent, Or else this present year will a great Plague and Famine, befall both People and Cattle. Upon uttering of which words, the Candle extinguished, and the four shapes immediately vanished. The Lord be merciful to his Chosen Ones, and grant that these Signs and Wonders, may auspicate as much Peace and glory to these Nations, as that great Star did upon the death of Julius Caesar, to his Successor Augustus Caesar, which dispensed a healthful and happy in●luence upon those Nations, where the Iron-Gates of War were demolished, and the Peoples Freedoms restored: Which proved a most Glorious Government in
