The last True and New INTELLIGENCE FROM SCOTLAND. BEING A True and Perfect Account of the Overthrow of the REBELLS, with the Number of the SLAIN and TAKEN, on both Sides. With a List of the Names of the Chief Ring-Leaders, and Ministers, Engaged in this Rebellion. Dated June 23. 1679. 〈…〉 The last True and New Intelligence from Scotland. SIR, TO give you a short account of things, so far as the present hurry of our business will give me leave, I have sent you these few lines to confirm the former news of the overthrow of the Rebels here. The Victory was absolute, Eight Hundred being killed upon the place, and Twelve Hundred Fifty and Five taken Prisoners, who were carried to edinburgh, and there delivered into the Charge and Custody of the Magistrates of the City on Thursday last, who took charge of them accordingly till further order. His Grace the Duke of Monmouth was expected there the same day, preparations being made for his reception. It is very observable, that most of those poor Captives lay the cause of their own misery, occasioned by their villainous Rebellion upon their Ministers, who without ceasing continually pressed and incited them to it by the Thundering Arguments of their Fallacious Doctrine; not suffering them to be at rest in their habitations at their Lawful Callings, till they had engaged themselves to take up Arms against their Sovereign, in defence of their King— murdering Covenant. The Duke of Monmouth, as it is here believed, will in a few days return for England; for the general report is that Walch is taken, who was the chief Ring-leader and Fomenter, as well of all the former as of these present mischiefs in this Kingdom, and it is believed, that the tranquillity and peace of this Kingdom, may be the more safely secured by the serious, and powerful Prosecution of such a notorious, and active villain. It is thought that there are not Three Hundred of the Rebels in a body; However his Majesties Forces are still in pursuit of their straggling parties among the Hills, and daily take and kill such as make any opposition against them. In all which it is to be observed as a great Providence of God, in the preservation of his Majesty, and his Government in this Kingdom, that so remarkable a Victory, should be obtained with so small a loss. For by all the accounts which we have had since the action itself, we cannot gather, that above Ten of His Majesties Soldiers have been slain out-right, though we cannot deny but that several are wounded, though we hope not many mortally. I have sent you here a list of the Chief Ring-leaders in this Rebellion, whose Names are as followeth. Edinb. June 23. 1679. Two Mr. Stewarts Brothers of the Earl of gallovvay.
