EDINBURGH, the 6. of October. 1648. WHereas upon disbanding of the Forces lately in Arms, in and about Sterling great numbers of Officers and Souldiers, of that Army, and others returned from England: do resort hither to the City of Edinburgh, and Suburbs thereof, and commit divers disorders and insolences, by robbing and plundering, from which many other inconveniencies may follow, to the great prejudice of the public, and the disturbance of the Peace of the kingdom. Therefore the Committee of Estates doth enjoin, and ordain all that have been in arms, for prosecution of the late Engagement against England, or who have been in arms under the Command of the Earl of Lanerk, or have joined in arms with those under his Command, or with the remainder of the Army returned out of England, under the Command of Colonel George Monro and others,( except such as shall have licence, from the Committee to stay about their necessary affairs) to depart out of this City, and the Suburbs thereof, within the space of forty eight houres after publication hereof, and not to remain with●n the space of six miles of this City, under pain of Imprisonment of their Persons, and confiscati●n of their Horse and arms, and such further censure, as the contempt of public order shall deserve. And the Provest and Baliffs of this City are appointed to take special care that this order be punctually observed, and speedily put in execution. And whereas divers insolences have likewise been committed in Landward by the persons aforesaid, the Committee hath thought fit to ordain, and they do hereby Command and ordain, that none of the common Souldiers whether of Horse or Foot, who have been in arms, for prosecution of the said engagement, or otherwise, as is before expressed, shall wear any pistols or other forbidden arms, under the pains contained in the Acts of Parliament, and that none of them, whether Officers or Souldiers, travel or meet together in arms above the number of six persons, under pain of confiscation of their Horses and arms, and Imprisonment of their Persons, except Noblemen and Landed-Gentlemen, who are allowed to ride with their own domestics and Retinue, and in case any Person or Persons whatsoever, shall be found stealing, robbing or plundering, the Commttee doth appoint them to be apprehended, and put in Prison, that after legal trial and proof of the crime, they may suffer according to the Laws of the kingdom, and all Sheriffs, Magistrates, bailiffs, and Officers of the Army, are hereby authorised and required to put this order in execution; And to the end none who have submitted to the late agreement of the 26 of September last, may pretend excuse, for want of a safe Passage to their own home or to go out of the kingdom; the Committee hath given order that Passes be granted to all such as desire to repair to their own homes, or to go out of the country.
