Advertisement to the Reader. WHereas in the Translation of the Dutch Sea-Mirrour, and the Lighting Column, many gross Errors have been committed in the Distances and Courses, as also Dutch Miles placed for and in the name and title of English Leagues, The Reader may please to take notice that the faults are corrected, and the Dutch Miles calculated, and turned into English Leagues, as they ought to be, according to 20 Leagues in a Degree, for the good and right understanding of our English Navigators and Sea-men; and for preventing all difficulties and mistakes which otherwise easily might happen. By a Well-wisher of the good and welfare of our English Nation, hoping it will take as kind acceptance by all Lovers of this Famous Art, as willingness in the Translator. L. C. THe Practitioner is to take notice that the three Columns of Figures belonging to each point of the Compass, are Days, Hours, and Minutes of and after the New or Full Moon. As for Example: I desire to know when the Moon is 7 days past the New or Full when she comes to the South South West, or makes High-water before Yarmouth, the Rivers mouth of London, and the Downs on the Road, &c. And as in this, so in all other places, I seek in the several points, till I find the said places, and there I see that they stand under the South South West, and North North East point, therefore in the column of Dayes I find 7, and next to it I see 7 hours 6 minutes; Upon that Day then the Moon shall come to the South South West, and North North East, and upon those places mentioned, under that point make High-water. Nota, that the Tides do not hold out, but fall short 48 minutes, which is four fifths of an hour. Therefore if you know at what hour, the New or Full Moon make full Sea in any place, then reckon from that time every day four fifths of an hour later, and so find the right time of the High-water.
