royal blazon or coat of arms HONI SOIT QVI MAL Y PENSE dieu ET MON DROIT ❧ By the King. ¶ A Proclamation declaring His majesties pleasure, concerning the forfeitures of Recusants in the northern parts of this kingdom. WHereas Wee, by the advice of Our privy counsel, haue granted Our Commission unto Our right trusty and right well-beloved Cousin, emmanuel earl of Sunderland, Lord President of Our counsel established in the North parts, and to Our right trusty and welbe. loved counsellor, Sir John Sauill, Knight, and diuers others, Gentlemen, and persons of principal note and quality, of, and in Our Counties of york, Stafford, derby, Notingham, lincoln, Chester, Lancaster, Westmerland, Cumberland, Northumberland, and bishopric of Durham, and Counties of the Cities of york, lincoln, and Chester, and towns, and Counties of Newcastle-vpon-Tine, and Kingston vpon-Hull, and haue thereby given unto Our said Commissioners, full power and authority in Our name, and to Our use, to treat and compound with all persons convicted, or hereafter to be convicted for recusancy, either dwelling or residing in those Counties, Cities or towns, or any of them, or having any manours, Lands, Tenements, Leases, Goods or Chattels within those Counties, Cities or towns, or any of them, for Leases of their Lands, or farms, or other composition for the forfeitures of such Recusants, incurred or forfeited since the tenth year of the reign of Our late dear Father, or which shall be hereafter incurred or forfeited, according to such instructions and directions for Our service, as in, and by the said Commission sealed with Our great seal of England, and Instructions signed with Our royal hand, doth at large appear. The benefit of all which Forfeitures and sums of Money, which do, or shall by that means accrue or grow unto us out of those Counties, Cities and towns, Wee haue specially appointed to bee employed, for, or towards the providing, Arming, and Maintaining of six able ships of war, for the defence and guard of those northern parts, and of the ships, Vessels, Goods and merchandise, passing and repassing by those coasts, which are more daily infested and endangered by Enemies, and pirates, like as Wee haue also appointed, and destinated those sums of money, which shall accrue unto us by the Forfeitures of Recusants, in all other parts of this Our kingdom, for, or towards the maintenance of Our navy, and other public services, and no ways to bee employed to Our private or particular use. Now, to the end that Our pleasure herein may be the better known, and also Our Subiects whom it may any way concern, may the better take notice thereof, and apply themselves accordingly, Wee, by the like advice of Our privy counsel, haue thought fit to publish and declare the same by this Our royal Proclamation, and do hereby publish and declare the same, willing and requiring all those, whom it shall, or may concern, to repair to Our said Commissioners, who, or a competent number of whom, according to the tenor of Our said Commission, shall, and will be remaining at Our city of york, to give dispatch to all Suitors, who shall desire the same. And, Wee do hereby further declare Our pleasure and resolution to be, that if any Recusant, whom it may concern, shal refuse or neglect to accept of Our Grace thus offered,& to be extended unto them by Our said Commissioners, for those Counties, Cities, and towns by the space of two moneths, from the date of this Our Proclamation; Or, by the Lords, and other Our Commissioners for the other parts of this Our kingdom of England, and Dominion of Wales, who are also appointed to attend the execution and dispatch thereof at Our Palace of White-Hall, that they must know that we are fully resolved against all such, to take the uttermost benefit of those Forfeitures which haue accrued, or shall accrue unto us, without any favour towards those who shall so neglect it. given at Our Court at Whitchall, the seven and twentieth day of june, in the third year of Our reign of Great britain, France, and Ireland.
