WHereas His Highnesse by his Proclamation lately published for setting of Prices vpon Wines, did declare( amongst other things) That the best gascon& French Wines should be sold at eighteen pounds the Tonne, and at six pence the Quart by retail; And the Rochel Wines at fifteen pounds the Tonne in gross, and at five pence the Quart by retail: His majesty having taken into his consideration, that this present year the Wines of gascon, some of them are very small, thin, and scarcely to be discerned from the thinner sort of Wines, and the thinner Wines are of diuers sorts, some very good that they are exceedingly desired, and some so thin and small, that they are not meet to bee sold at so high a Rate as five pence the Quart, Is pleased, and doth ordain, that the good and wholesome Wines of the growth of France, as well those of Rochel as the rest, shall bee sold by retail at reasonable prices, not exceeding six pence the Quart, and according to that Rate by retail: Charging and commanding such of His Subiects and others whom it shall concern, that during this present year they sell the said Wines by retail at reasonable rates and prices, not exceeding six pence for the Quart, And that none of them presume to take above six pence the Quart by retail for any Wines of the growth of France, as well for those of Rochel as for the rest, as they tender His pleasure, and will avoid the contrary at their perils. given at the Court at Whitehall, this two and twentieth day of March, in the eighth year of the reign of our sovereign Lord, CHARLES by the grace of God King of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, &c.
