royal blazon or coat of arms ❧ By the King. ❧ A Proclamation for the restraint of the multitude, and promiscuous use of Coaches, about London and Westminster. THe Kings majesty perceiving of late times, the great numbers that are of Hackney Coaches kept and used in the Cities of London and Westminster, and the suburbs thereof, as also the general and promiscuous use of Coaches in and about His said Cities, whereby not only a great disturbance grows to His majesty, His dearest Consort the queen, the nobility, and others of place and degree, in their passage through the Streets of the said Cities; but the Streets themselves so pestered, and the pavements thereof so broken up, as the Common passage is thereby hindered and made dangerous, and the Rates and Prices of Hay and provender, and other provisions of Stable thereby made exceeding dear; Hath thought fit, with the advice of his privy council, to publish His royal pleasure for reformation herein. And therefore His majesty doth hereby express and declare His Will and Pleasure to bee, and doth hereby expressly Command and forbid; That from the Feast day of Saint John the Baptist next coming, no Hackney or hired Coach, or Coaches be used or suffered in London or Westminster, or the suburbs or Liberties thereof; Except the same Hackney Coach or Coaches bee to travail at the least three Miles out of London or Westminster, or the suburbs thereof, or further. And also, that no person or persons, shall go in a Coach in the Streets of London or Westminster, or the suburbs or Liberties thereof, except the Owner of the same Coach, shall, and do constantly keep within the said Cities and suburbs thereof, four sufficient and able Horses or Geldings fit for His majesties service, whensoever His majesties occasions shall require: vpon pain of His majesties high displeasure and indignation, and such pains and Penalties as may bee inflicted for the Contempt of His majesties royal Commands in the premises, whereof he is resolved to require a strict account. And for the due execution of His majesties pleasure herein declared, he doth further Charge and Command all Iustices of Peace, Maiors, bailiffs, Constables, and other Officers and Ministers of the said Cities of London and Westminster, and the suburbs and Liberties thereof, to bee aiding and assisting in their several places, whereby such as shall wilfully offend in the premises, may bee brought and presented to His majesties privy council, and thereupon may bee proceeded against, according to the demerits of the offenders. given at His majesties Palace of Westminster, the nineteenth day of january in the eleventh year of His reign of England, Scotland, France, and Ireland. ¶ God save the King. ¶ Imprinted at London by ROBERT BARKER, Printer to the Kings most Excellent majesty: And by the assigns of John BILL. 1635.
