The Excellency and Nature of the true Spirit of Wormwood: With its Virtues and Directions. THis Spirit of Wormwood, being Rightly prepared, hath many Excellent and Hidden virtues, which I thought fit to make known for the public good: there is not any Herb that grows that is a greater friend to the Stomach than Wormwood; it is of a predominant Quality, for the Cure of these following Distempers; which may be acknowledged by those that have experienced the same, ( viz.) This Spirit of Wormwood, expels wind very powerfully, removes any pain in the Stomach, though of a long continuance, stitches in the side, and disperseth Melancholy water, that hinders digestion; this Spirit is of a singular good quality to strengthen a weak stomach, to restore a lost Appetite; This Spirit gives warmth, and opens Obstructions, both of Liver and Spleen, cleanseth the Reins and Bladder, Killeth Worms, purgeth choler, a present Remedy for Agues, if timely taken; prevents any Surfeits, good against the Yellow-Jaundies, sweeteneth the Breath. Now this Spirit of Wormwood which is here Commended for public use, is nothing else but the true Central and Physical part of that incomparable Vegetable, purely abstracted from its gross Body, and diligently prepared, according to the best Rules of Art. This Spirit is subject to no Corruption or Decay, being close stopped, it will Keep and Retain its Virtue from Age to Age. Directions for the Taking of it. Take of this Spirit in the morning 40, 50, or 60 drops in a draft of Rhenish-Wine, White-wine, Bear or Ale, which you please; likewise I shall advice all Persons, that go to Drink Epsom, Tunbridge and Barnet Waters, to be provided with this Spirit of Wormwood; which they will find very Beneficial to correct the Windiness and Rawness of the Waters by the taking of this Spirit every Morning; in the first draft you take, put in some of the drops, for they are very Cordial next the Heart, and causeth the Waters to work more Effectually than before, and give a good Appetite, and a Speedy Digestion, take away all pains of the Stomach, by the Warmth and strength it Receives from its Excellent Virtues.
