AN Advertisement OF THE VIRTUES and USE Of sundry Select and Experimented MEDICINES SUCH Whose Beneficence is well known to the most Eminent Physitians: faithfully prepared and sold by THO. HAMMOND, at his House, the sign of the Blew Ball in Ave-Mary-Lane, Leading from lord gaze Street, to Pater Noster-Row. Who has been Practically conversant, as well as student in chemical Pharmacy( with submission to his other Avocations) above Ten Years last past. VIZ. I. The QUEEN of HUNGARY's WATER, Rightly Prepared; as it has been many Years experienced and continues approved by the Nobility and Gentry of England. COncerning its Virtues I shall transcribe Her own Recommendations, viz. Anno 1511. in the City of Buda this Receipt was found in a Breviary that belonged to Elizabeth Queen of Hungary; on the backside whereof[ being Translated] this was written, viz. Of this Water of Life I Elizabeth Queen of Hungary, and Aged 27 years, very weak, Palsical and Gouty, did use this Receipt for one year, which an old Hermit gave me, whom I never saw before nor after; and I was thereby wonderfully cured, and restored to my former Strength and Beauty, appearing to every body very Beautiful. insomuch that the King of Poland desired to mary me,( I being a Widow) which I refused to do for my Saviour Christs-sake, of whose Angel I believe I received this Medicine. A noble Commendation! And indeed Rosemary flowers,( of which this balsamic liquour is compounded) are full of Volatile Salt and Sulphur, two of the principal Agents of Nature; but more especially when their Virtue is animated by the subtlety of the Spirit of Wine, which doth in a moment penetrate from the Center of the Stomach to the Circumference of the Body, and doth inspire Vigour into all the Functions of our Life. 'tis found by Experience to be an admirable Restorer of decayed Memory, by bathing the Temples; and by pouring a little into the Palm of the Hand, snuffing up the Nostrils the scent thereof very strongly, and doing it Morning and Evening; and at the same time take half a Spoonful in a Glass of Beer or Ale, or in a Sack-glass full of fair Water sweetened with fine Sugar. It may be made stronger tasted or weaker by adding more or less of the liquour you take it in, according to every ones pallet. It also remedies Giddiness and other disaffects of the Brain; and wonderfully strengtheners the Sight by touching the Eye lids with it Morning and Evening, and at the same time bathe the Temples and the Nape of the Neck. It corrects and amends an ill savouring Breath; and strengtheners the Stomach, amending any imperfections thereof; as want of Appetite, bad Digestion, &c. vanquishing windy and unwholesome Vapours which annoy the Head and Heart, by taking half a Spoonful mixed as aforesaid last at Night, and first in the Morning, and at any other time when the Stomach is out of order. Excellent for the Gripes. It speedily cures the Gripes by taking two spoonfuls in a pint of Ale( made very warm before you put the Spirit into it) and drink it off, and walk much upon it; but if they be very violent, 'twill be best to go to Bed upon it, and try to sleep, and when you awake drink a draft of Mace-Ale hot, and if there be occasion repeat the same quantity of Spirit again. 'tis a powerful Antidote against the Pestilence, or any other Contagious Distempers, by taking a Spoonful every Morning and Evening mixed with such a quantity of fair Water and Sugar as is before directed. Admirable for the Teeth and Gums. AND is one of the best Experimented Medicines yet known, to kill and vanquish the foul corroding humour in the Gums, which causeth rotten and loose Teeth, and wasting in the Gums; by mixing three or four spoonfuls with thrice the quantity of fair Water; which balsamic Mixture you may keep in a Vial close stopped; And every Morning when you arise, gargoyle your Mouth with a little, and having so done, pour some into a Spoon, and dip either your Finger or a fine linnen-rag therein and rub well your Gums therewith; and do the like at Bed time: It preserves the Teeth and Gums firm to old Age, and puts a stop to those already wasting. The constant use thereof not onely preserves the Teeth, but also prevents the toothache by dispersing the Cause. 'tis an excellent Remedy for a Cough or could, by taking two Spoonfuls at Bed-time in a Glass of warm Ale with a spoonful of Fine Sugar dissolved therein; and in the Morning bathe well the Temples and Nostrils. It hath also excellent Effects by bathing outwardly any part Afflicted with pain or strained bruised or benumbed. 'tis admirable in vanquishing the pains of the Gout, by bathing Morning and Evening before the Fire with a warm hand, and oftener if the pain be violent; in which Malady it has many times been experienced to the comfort of divers persons of Honour, and others; as also of the shaking palsy, by bathing the part often, and taking half a spoonful inwardly, mixed as aforesaid Night and Morning; and indeed it should always be taken inwardly, when you have any pains or stubborn Malady, for which you use it outwardly; and let no man fear the vulgar Bug-bear; that being a A pure volatile spirit from wine wholly divested of phlegm and wholesomely diluted( as is directed) is more beneficial to the vitals than those sophisticated, mongrel, Brandy-like, Dulcified Spirits; which harbour a foul stinking phlegm injurious to Nature. subtle spirit it shall be too hot; for being so qualified by mixing with water as is directed, it becomes an excellent well tempered Cordial, amicable to the Vital Spirits, and agreeable with the Balsam of Life: Nay, it is so balsamic, as that it will speedily and safely heal a wound, by dropping some few drops thereon, and dipping a Bolster therein, and bind it on, as has been frequently proved: And takes away the smart of a burn or scald immediately, and fetcheth out the Fire; not breaking the skin, presently applying a linen rag dipped therein; and bathing the part therewith, and often dipping the rag afresh during the first hour. It strengtheners Weak and Ricketty Limbs, and mollifieth and taketh down great and hard Bellies in Children, by bathing therewith before the Fire with a warm hand Morning and Evening; whereby it hath restored many to strength and vigour, even to admiration. Excellent to Beautify the Skin. LADIES may mix a spoonful in four spoonfuls of Bean-flower-water, or fair water,( it will become slippery, and as white as Milk) and wash their Face; it's admirable to clear and beautify the Skin. And the said mixture being of a suppling, avaricious quality, it continues the Face in a youthful complexion, and removes Scurf or Morphew, and takes away Pimples by washing frequently with it, and comforts the Eyes by gently touching over the Eye-lids. It is put up and Sealed in strong Glasses of different Price, according to the quantity contained viz. 12d. 18d. or Half a Crown. NOTE, that the Author Dissolves therein a quantity of the Essential Salt of Rosemary, whereby it is superior in Virtue to that commonly sold about the Town; and the Spirit is also stronger, as may be proved by touching a spoonful with a lighted Paper, it will burn all away; and moreover being loaded with the Essential, volatile Salt, it turns Beer, Ale, Wine, or fair Water into a milky-colour.
