The Loyal REMONSTRANCE. WHereas some as poor in Spirit as Loyalty, crippled in Judgement as well as Fortune, have in pitiful Metre presumed to show their lame feet to his Majesty and both Houses, We who are the true Rubbish of Loyal ruins, would not be raised to offend the Eyes of Authority, though not only made Cripples, but beaten with our Crutches, formerly made bare, to be now exposed to the Lash; while, by the advantage of our Gold, Idols are reared in High Places; who like those of the Heathen, would ever want Eyes and Ears, could we always descend to be their Votaries: yet we are content to do penance for being ravished; who can think every Murmur an apostasy, which may exceed all Acts of Grace or Oblivion. We never supposed Loyalty Merit, and are so much Protestants, that we cannot believe, either in our Duty to God, or Allegiance to the King, there can be works of Super-erogation; nor are we troubled, if the Prodigals, at their Return( who have fed so long on the husks of Error) are clothed by the Father of our country with the best Coats,( nay, if even our own) while we their Elder Brothers in Loyalty go as naked as the Truth we profess, and exposed to as much scorn. If they who came in at the latter end of the day receive their penny, we complain not with those in the Gospel, though in worse condition, both unrewarded and Penilesse; Our Eyes have seen the salvation of the Lord, in the Return of a most Gracious KING, and we have assured hope of our penny, in our own Salvation by the King of Kings. Wanting all things, we have nothing to petition for beside his Honour, and our Princes Safety. Who had no Prayers above the restoring of our King, have now no Desires above a Restoring of the Church, by a Return of the Bishops to their just Votes in Parliament; humbly conceiving, could they be Excluded in Justice, they might be admitted in Equity; since these Fathers of the Church may not seem less requisite Advisers for the Gospel, then our Judges for the Law, unless Religion is the only thing the Great Chuncil is inconcerned in; or Reverend Learning and Sober Piety, are supposed prejudicial to that Honourable Assembly. Thus Security may be given for the Act of Oblivion, the Blood of our martyred sovereign and our own, may not seem spilled in vain; righteousness and Justice may re-attend the Grand Council; Truth and Peace may re-unite in the Kingdom; Tumult and Faction may be discountenanced, while the breach is made up, which was an In-let to all the Misery and Confusion which attended Church and State. Thus Episcopacy, the greatest Remedy against Schism prevailing, Knowledge, Moderation, Piety or Power, may convince Error, restore weakness, convert Scandal, kerb Sedition, that all may be of one Heart, one mind, use one Form of Prayer with us, for Kings, and all who are in Authority, &c.
