REASONS Humbly offered against the Passing of a BILL, For the Sole USE of Convex-Lights, or Glasses. I. IT is conceived the Patent( the Time wherein is now desired to be enlarged) is voided in Law, not being granted to the inventor of the said Lights. II. That since the said Lights have been set up, other Persons have set up the same Lights which the Patentee, or those who pretend to claim under him could not restrain, although they endeavoured so to do, their Patent being voided as aforesaid. III. Their Patent gives no particular Power to the Patentee, to make or use Convex Glasses, but is a Grant only for the great Increase of Light by extraordinary Glasses and Lamps useful for Light and Heat. IV. Convex Glasses were in use for Light, many Years before the said Patent granted; therefore Convex-Lights could not be those intended by the said Patent as a New Invention. V. That in truth the many Thousand Pounds alleged to be expended in carrying on the Invention of the said Convex-Lights, has not been really expended therein for the public Use; but the greatest part thereof has been exhausted in Stock-Jobbing, by selling one of their Shares for 1100, or 1200 l. which lately were sold for about 200 l. and by their giving great Sums of Money to others who would have set up their Lights, whom they could not restrain by their said Patent. VI. The Lights pretended to be so useful to the public, we know to be quiter otherwise, by reason of their Darks and Shades, and dazzling the Eyes, and other Defects, and by their going out in divers places by Nine of the Clock, or before that time. VII. Whereas there is invented a New Light, called, The Light-Royal, much more useful and beneficial to the public, than any Light now in use, being one entire Glass giving or spreading Light all round about, and underneath the same, without Darks or Shades, and a curious pleasant Light to the Eye, and much clearer, and giving Light farther than those now abroad do, and not dazzling or prejudicial to the Eyes. VIII. That the said Light-Royal is fit to be used in all Churches, Halls, Courts, Work-rooms, Staircases, Stables, and other places where the other Lights cannot be used, by reason of their dark Shades, dazzling of the Eyes, and other defects. IX. This Light-Royal is the more beneficial to the public, because much more Glass( now a considerable Manufacture of this Kingdom) is used about the same, than in any other Light now in use. X. That this Light will be afforded much cheaper to the People, nor will any oil drop from the same, to the annoyance of any Body. And therefore it is hoped, That the Persons concerned in these New-invented Lights, shall not be discouraged from using or setting up any thing invented for the public Good, by those other Persons concerned in the Lights now in use, who desire to monopolise those Lights, exclusive of any other.
