Blake and Music, 2024

Camila Oliveira (camila.querino@edu.ulisboa.pt) is a research fellow at the University of Lisbon. She holds a PhD in English literature from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and King’s College London on the translation of Blake’s Jerusalem into Portuguese and biblical intertextuality. She is currently working on Romanticism and music reception and writing a monograph on Blake and contemporary music.

In the past few years we have tried to keep more regular track of Blake’s reception in music with our annual checklist of classical and popular settings. Every new inventory reveals the minute particulars of each year and reflects in one way or another the transformations and trends in the music industry. The ascending curve of settings between 2021 and 2023 was steady (152 tracks in 2021, 168 in 2022, and 192 in 2023), but in 2024 the number of tracks jumped to 303, representing an increase of almost 60% in relation to the previous year. Unfortunately, the reason for such dramatic growth cannot simply be explained by Blake’s soaring popularity in recent years; it also hinges on the pervasive (and pernicious) influence of an old new “friend”: artificial intelligence.

There has been much debate about the threat of AI to the art world, and music seems to be the most affected of all. An article in the GuardianKelly Burke, “Music Sector Workers to Lose Nearly a Quarter of Income to AI in Next Four Years, Global Study Finds,” Guardian (4 Dec. 2024). reported the results of an economic study that predicts that “by 2028, exponential growth in generative AI music [will] account for about 20% of traditional music streaming platforms’ revenues.” To make matters worse, “people working in the music sector will lose almost a quarter of their income to artificial intelligence within the next four years.” The checklist below raises concerns about the accuracy of the survey’s projections, revealing a bleaker reality: 20% of the Blake settings last year were already created by AI programs. Since the regulation of the space is still incipient and insufficient, a great deal of what has been generated by AI is not clearly labeled as such, meaning that its negative impact on the creative industry must be higher than we think.

The visionary scholar Morris Eaves somehow anticipated the discussion in his 1977 essay “Blake and the Artistic Machine.”Morris Eaves, “Blake and the Artistic Machine: An Essay in Decorum and Technology,” PMLA 92.5 (1977): 903-27. Articulating Blake’s views on art and technology, Eaves reflects on the establishment of a system of technological and economic intermediaries between the artist and the audience and on the limits imposed by mechanical execution upon human conception. Blake refers to those intermediaries as “vile tricks,” which he sees as ultimately created and developed to alienate the artist and deceive the audience by offering an artifact that is nothing but a reproduction or simulacrum of a genuine work of art, devoid of soul, imagination, and creativity. In his Public Address, he writes, “A Machine is not a Man nor a Work of Art it is Destructive of Humanity & of Art.” That certainly shows how much he would disapprove of what generative AI programs have been doing to his poems.

Besides AI, another remarkable phenomenon observed in the 2024 checklist is the number of albums (EPs and singles not included) solely focused on settings of Blake. Unsurprisingly, most of them are based on Songs of Innocence and of Experience. Nonetheless, a much less popular work, The Gates of Paradise, inspired the homonymous album by the Brazilian project IO. The Blake-only albums come from the four corners of the world, from the USA to Italy, New Zealand, and Thailand.

As in previous lists, I omit here any songs based on a single quotation or phrase from Blake’s poetry or art. Wherever possible, the country of the artist is given, as well as the work’s instrumentation, duration, publisher, copyright date, and genre. So prevalent is streaming now, however, that I no longer record the format, with nearly every release being available only through streaming services or as a digital download. As such, all entries include at least one link to a recording.
