Neil Hardy Showcase

Neil O. Hardy 1929-2018

This JBC Showcase features the award-winning illustrations by AMI member Neil Hardy, who passed away on June 3, 2018.

After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, Neil attended the Maryland Institute of Art from which he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He then chose to pursue a Master’s Degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Department of Art as Applied to Medicine, graduating in 1958.

Because of his love of medical illustration and his eagerness to assist young artists, he was especially proud to spend 19 years teaching in the Art as Applied to Medicine program at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as an assistant professor.

Neil was a life long member of the AMI, and he proudly served a term as AMI President and AMI board member. Among his foremost joys, professionally, was receiving the Ranice W. Crosby Distinguished Achievement Award (1991) from the Johns Hopkins University. He also was the recipient of the AMI Lifetime Achievement Award (1997) and the AMI Brödel Award for Excellence in Education (2003).

His artwork was published in numerous medical journals, books, and professional journals. In addition, his illustrations have appeared in The New York Times, Reader’s Digest, Country Journal, and Golf Digest.

In addition, Neil's work was featured in exhibitions at the Westport Library (Westport Connecticut) in 2000 and the Weston Public Library (Weston, Connecticut) in 2015.

Neil produced clear accurate illustrations, primarily in pen and ink, for books, medical journals, and magazines for many decades. He illustrated A Guided Tour of the Living Cell by Christian de Duve, which was published by the Scientific American Library.

Neil will be missed not only by his family and friends, but also by all of his professional colleagues.
