The AMI Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest honor awarded by the Association of Medical Illustrators. This award is presented annually to an individual who has dedicated his or her professional life as a medical illustrator. In doing so, this individual has engaged with fellow illustrators, not only to support the ideals of the profession, but also to ensure that it thrives, progresses, and advances the Association.
Bill has served in many leadership roles within the AMI, such as Newsletter Editor-in-Chief and the AMI Source Book Editor and Chair. Bill was President of the AMI for 2001-2002. He also served two terms on the AMI Board of Governors. While on the Board, he was asked to chair an ad hoc Foundation Committee, with the purpose of studying the feasibility of creating an educational foundation for the AMI. As a result of this work, the Vesalius Trust was established in 1988, and Bill became the founding President. In 2018 the Vesalius Trust celebrated its 30th anniversary. Following employment in Tucson, AZ and Houston, TX, Bill moved to Augusta, GA in 1999 to join the faculty at the Department of Medical Illustration in the School of Allied Health Sciences, Medical College of Georgia - now Augusta University (AU). Entering as an Assistant Professor, he rose progressively through the academic ranks to full Professor with tenure in 2012. In 2000 he became Director of the David J. Mascaro Teaching Gallery of Medical Illustration, named in honor of his colleague, mentor, and close friend. In his curatorial position he is responsible for looking after an impressive collection of over 400 original medical illustrations. At AU, Bill has served in various capacities as Education Coordinator, Program Director, and in 2018 was named as Chair of the Department of Medical Illustration. He has held other University positions, such as President of the University Arts Council. His teaching responsibilities have evolved over time; he currently teaches traditional techniques, electronic media, and multimedia courses. Bill also developed a rigorous business practice course preparing students for life beyond the university. In 2009, Bill became the youngest educator to win the AMI Brödel Award for Excellence in Education. Bill has received numerous honors for his artwork, including the Ralph Sweet Award, Will Shepard Award and three Russell Drake Awards from the AMI. His works are included in museums and private collections around the world. Bill has more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and 60 atlases, books and book chapters to his credit. He published two editions of his own book, "Medicine Is Not Pretty," based on his experiences at the Texas Medical Center. The book is a collection of his weekly cartoons depicting the goings-on at the fictional Manubrium Heights Memorial Hospital.
