It is a \nlar^e and commodius brick building, trimmed with Bedford \nstone, steam heated and pipe for waterworks and gas light \n\ning. \n\nThe dimensions are 70ft. x 100ft, three stories and base- \nment. It was built by the Stanberry Pressed Brick Co. \nafter plans furnished by L. Grant Middaugh, of Kansas \nCity. Col. J. W. Harper, of Hamilton, then Presiding Judge \nof the C\'ounty Court, superintended the building of it. \n\nThis building is taken care of by S. W. Thompson, fam- \niliarly known as "Scotty\'\', who has given his entire time \nto the janitorship since June 1903, his services having been \nentirelv satisfactory to the officials and the County Court. \n\n\n\nI Caldwell County Missouri | \n\n\n\nW Historical and Descriptive. Area 432 Square fliles |j \nS Population 18,000 M \n\n\n\nIn many respects, north-west Missouri excels any part \nof the United States. For agriculture, its prairies rival \nany of the west: for thrift, enterprise and hospitality it \nstands the peer of any land. \n\nCaldwell County is located in this, the Eden of the \nwest: in the midst of a land of plenty, of lowing- herd and \nfattening swine. \n\nThe first settler to make his home within the present \nlimits of Caldwell Countyi is said to have been Jesse Mann, \nSr., who settled near the present site of Kingston in the \nspring- of 1831. At that time this territory was known as \nCaldwell Township, Ray County, and while there were \nscattering settlements from that time on yet, up to the year \n183H, there was not a town or even a store, in what is now \nCaldwell county, the nearest being at Richmond. \n\nThe first town in the county was Salem, two miles \nsouth-east of the present site of Kingston. \n\nCaldwell County was organized in 1836, the intention \nbeing to have a county made up entirely of Mormons, who \nselected Far West as their New Jerusalem and at which \nplace the seat of justice was established. Mormons came \npouring in rapidly from all over the United States until at \n\n\n\nthe time of the exodus, the population of the county was \nabout six thousand, and Far We\xc2\xabt was the largest town in \nMissouri, north of the river, and the largest town that ever \nwas within the borders of Caldwell County, having- about \n2500 inhabitants. \n\nIt was here the Mormons made preparations to build \na Grand Temple, which, however, they were not permitted \nto build. Nothing- now remains to mark the location of \nFar West except the excavation for the temple, which may \nbe seen at almost its orig-inal depth, a few stone scattered \nabout the temple site and the visitor is also shown the \n"stone that fell from heaven" to iSe the chief corner stone. \n\nThe cemetery, where sleep many followers of Josepj \nSmith, fell into disuse and has long since been in cultiva- \ntion and pasturage. \n\nFar West is buried in the past as effectually as if the \neartii had opened and eng\'ulfed the Mormon city. \n\nThe Mormon war occuring in 1 838, resulted in the ex- \npulsion of that sect from the stats, only a few remaining. \nAmid many privations they made their way to Nauvoo,Ill. \nduring- the winter of 1838-39, reducing- the population of the \ncounty to perhaps less than one thousand. \n\nFar West continued to be the county seat- until in i842. \nwhen commissioners appointed for that purpose, selected \nKingston, and in 1843 all offices and records were trans- \nferred to that place. \n\nAn attempt was made to locate the county seat at Sa- \nlem, but it was unsuccessful. This town too, is but a re- \nmembrance. \n\nThe Hannibal & St. Joseph railroad was built in i\'85t) \nand opened up a way of communication to this vast section \nof as fine prairie as ever the sun smiled on. It was not \nuntil 1887 that the southern part of the county was opened \nup by the building- of the Chicago. Milwaukee & St. Paul \nrailroad. The county has twelve townships and has been \nunder township organization since i872. \n\n\n\n\nJudj^e J. W. Rice Judjj^e Geo. N. Elliott \n\nPresiding Judge J. N. Chapman \n\nThe Caldwell County Court is composed of the above \ngentlemen, whose services as such court have been hig-hly \nsatisfactory. \n\nPresiding- Judge J. N. Chapman, was born in Quebec, \nCanada, in 1846, but was reared in Wisconsin. Has been \na resident of this county thirty six years and is one of the \nleading- farmers and stockman of FairvieAv twp., owning a \nlarge and well stocked farm. He is serving a second term \nand has made a very able official and carefully looked \nafter the interests of the county. \n\nJudge J. W. Rice, of Eastern Dist. born in Ohio, in \n1846. At the age of seventeen he inlisted in the Union army \nand served until the close of the civil war, on the gun-boat \nCurlew, No. 12 Mississippi Squadron. Coming to Caldwell \nin 1869, he has made this his home ever since and has been \nvery successful as a farmer. He lives at Cowgill and has \nmade a creditable record as a county official in his present \nposition. \n\nJudg-e Geo. N. Elliott, of the Western Dist., was born \nin Ohio in 1849, and came to this county at the age of nine- \nteen and has since resided near Mirable, Judge Elliott is \na farmer and owns a well improved farm. Judge Elliott cer- \ntainly deserves a second term for his record has been one of \nefficient service and he is a gentleman of undoubted integrity. \n\n\n\nCaldwell county has had four court houses, two of \nwhich were burned, and now has a new building and one \nof the neatest in the state, costing- about $30,000. \n\nThe g-reater part, perhaps all of the county is under- \nlaid with a fine quality of bituminous coal, one mine being- \nin operation at Hamilton. Oil and g-as also are thoug-ht to \nabound in certain parts of the county and immense beds of \nlimestone are found in many places. \n\nThe Klondike rock quarry, one and a half miles soutli \neast of King-ston. is one of the larg-est quarries in the state, \nand has been pronounced by experts to be even better than \nthe famous Bedford limestone. \n\nTaxable waalth of Caldwell County is about $8,000,000. \nHorses, mules, sheep, cattle and hog-s are the principal live \nstock raised and have a taxable wealth of about $7,000,000. \nThe county is entirely out of debt, has g-ood public build- \ning-s: the various streams of the county are spanned by \nmany steel bridg-es and there is about $80,000 in the school \nfund of the county. which is loaned at 6 per cent. The coun- \nty is rapidly coming to be one of the leading- dairy coun- \nties in the state. \n\nThere are 78 schools in the county, employing- 95 teach- \ners and accommodating- 4436 pupils. \n\nTaxes assessed for school purposes ag-greg-ate $50,000 \nannually. Tlie churches and lodges are well represented in \nthe various towns and further mention will l)e made in the \ndescriptive write up of each town. \n\nThere are also ten newspapers in the county which will \nalso be referred to later. \n\nThe people of Caldwell County are enterprising; and \nI)rog-ressive as is evidenced by the find public building\'s, \nschools and churches and many fine residences scattered \nthroug-hout the country. \n\nIt is well supplied by modern conveniences such as the \ntelephone and free rural mail delivery, almost all parts of \nthe countv being- reached by both telephone and mail. \n\n\n\nIt is certainly a pleasure to dwell in a county so fav- \nored by nature and amono- the refined and cultivated class \nof people that ^o to make Caldwell County one of the best \nin orand old Missouri. \n\nCaldwell County is a land of plenty: no man within her \nborders need f>() without em])loyment. for the various in- \ndustries are enou^^-h to sui>ply work foi- all tliose who will \nwork: way-es are u()()d and day laborei-s. al)le and willin;^- \nto \'^vork, are always in demand. \n\nAnd yet the county is susce})tible to ji\'reater develo])- \nment. With a railway openin^f up the central part o+\' the \ncounty, with its coal, stone and shale, the i)ossi])ilities are- \nj^reat indeed. \n\nPolitically, the county is republican, but the fact re- \nmains that of whatever party, the num who wishes to serve \nthe pe()})le. must be a man of character and fully capable \n. to discharo-e the duties and responsibilities likely to come \nwith the office to which he aspires. \n\nOn another pa^j-e will be ^i\'lven the vote of The different \nprecincts in the election of 11)04. \n\n\n\n\nHON. FRANK B KLEPPER \n\nA writer for the "Success"" iiiaji-azine chose the subject of this \nsketch as one of ten new membei\'s of Cont^ress who are types of the \nself-made man. \n\nMr. Klepper came from a larye family and. from force of circum- \nstances, was compelled to help his father work the home farm, attend \npubhc school and read law at the same time. \n\ni orn at St. John, Putnam coimt.v. Mr. Klepper is a man of strong personality, \nnarked abillity and undoubted Integrity. He enjoys the reputation of \nbeing the second largest man physically, in the House, is of commanding \nappearance, and. unlike most new members, is not sitting idly by, but is \ntaking an ae-tive part in the deliberaiions and is on some very important \nt onjnjittees. \n\n\n\nCIRCUIT COURT \n\n.1. It was laid out in 1842, lots \nsold at auction and proceeds applied to the erection of a \ncourt house. The town was named in honor of Gov. Aus- \ntin A. Kinu-. \n\nIn 1843 all offices and records of the county were moved \nfrom Far West to Kin^\'ston and the business in u-eneral \nwas transferred to the new county seat. \n\nKin^-ston has not made the rapid g\'rowth of other towns. \n])ut its g-rowth has been permanent and it has kept pace \nwith the general improvement of the county. Its people are \nenterprising- and progressive and have endeavored to build \nup the town and make it a desirable place to live in and a \ncapital of which the county mig-ht be proud. \n\nIt has been the ambition of King-ston to have railway \nfacilities, and at one time, for a ])eriod of about ten years. \n\n\n\nit had a short line to Hamilton. wJiich was forced to dis- \ncontinue because of the arbitrary policy of the Burlina|)ers. \nniort^a.u\'e. bonds, eti-.. and uave full insl nuM ions as to all \nsteps neeessai-y to make them le^^al. wldcli wei-e carried out. \nTile mort^ia^^\'e was recorded, the bonds si\xc2\xbb>iu\'(i and sealed \nand a c()inniitt(H>. inchidin^i- the Tresideiit and Treasurer of \nHie Hamilton vV ICin.uston \\{. Bonds to the amount of $25,000 were voted last \nyear to build new school buildings which have been com- \npleted at a cost of about $30,000, are modern in every re- \nspect and speak of the progressive spirit of the city. There \nare nine rooms, em})loying as many teachers and accom- \n\n\n\nmodatin^- at present .\')54 pupils, aside from tlie colored \nschool, which has 30 pupils and employs one teacher. \n\nThe city\' tax is only 50 cents on the one dollar valua- \ntion which is very: low for a city the size of Hamilton. \n\nThe churches of Hamilton are a credit to the city and \nspeak well for the moral and religious atmosphere of the \nplace. \n\nPerhaps the lar^vst and costliest structure is that of \nthe Methodist Episcopal church which was built two or \nthree years ago at a cost of $5,000. This building- is a \nmodern structure and nicely furnished, a cut of wiiich ap- \npears in this directory. \n\nThe Presbyterian and C-ong-regational churches are \nalso new and up-to-date buildings, costing about $4,000 \neach and in harmony with the advancement of the cause \nthey represent and of the times. \n\nAmong the frame church buildings are the Christian, \nthe Baptist, Episcopal and Advents, the first two being- \nlarg-e and commodious and well furnished. \n\nThe Catholics have secured suitable ground for a church \nand will build this year. \n\nLodg-es too, are well represented. Ohio, September 2()th. 1841. \nthe subject of this sketch entered the Union service at the \nao-e of 24 and served during the civil war. \n\nHe came west in 1865 but returned to Ohio wliere he \nlived until 1881. Coming- to Indiana he remained for a \nyear then to Nebraka. residino- there for twelve years \nwhen he came to Caldwell County where he has since resid- \ned. He was assessor of Hamilton Township two terms and \nis now serving- his second term as County Treasurer. He \nhas filled the office in a way entirely satisfactory and it \nis regretted tliat tlie law precludes his re-election for a \na third term. \n\nMr. White is a genial gentleman and his pleasing per- \nsonality will be greatly missed at the expiration of his term \nof office. \n\n\n\nand the Rathbone Lodge has a membership of KM). The Farmers\' Advocate is the \nonly democratic organ in the county, has the largest \ncirculation of any newspaper in the county, is owned by \nHolman & Ridings and edited and published by C. F. It \nwas not platted until nearly ten years later than this, in \n1886, just a short time before the building- of the Chicago, \nMilwaukee & St. Paul Pvailroad. \n\nAt the present time, Polo is a thriving little city of the \nfourth class, and during the past year or two has made \nvery great advancement. Several new buildings have been \nbuilt and granitoid sidewalks and crossings are becoming \nmore in evidence and add much to the convenience and im- \nprovement of the place. \n\nOne building that has been built within the past few \nyears and which is deserving of special mention, is the new \nMethodist Episcopal Church, South, a cut of which appears \nin this directory. It was finished somewhat more than two \n\n\n\nyears ago at a cost of about -$(),\')00 and is a modern struc- \nture and one which many a larger town could point to with \npride. \n\nWhile speaking- of new building-s it w^ould be well to \nmenti-tar (**) \n\n\n\nA rev G C* \n\n\xe2\x96\xa0^^Arey Grace K \n\n*Arnote A Mc \nAchenbacli H F carpenter \nAchenbach (\'has miller \nAchenbach C G barber \nAdams A S \n\nAlbrio\'ht D E stock shipper \nAlderdice F M carpenter \n\n^Arnold H F \nArnote J T telephone \n\n\'^Arnote K V \n\n*Arnote O F \n\n* Arnote James \n\n"\'\xe2\x80\xa2Arnote W M \nAtkinson I N blacksmith \n\n*Arev S G \n\n*Arev M E \n\n*Are*y J B \nAlbertson Geo \n\n\n\nB \n\n\n\nains G * \n\nBaldwin D L editor \nBelt Oscar \nBrelsford M S \n\n\n\n*Brelsford H B \n^Brelsford H M \n*Baker J G \n\n* Baker J W \nBluejacket M P \n\n* Beckett B F \nBarber W L \n\n*Bathg-ate L B \nBathg-ate W S gen store \nBathgate J as B cashier \nBathg-ate Thos \nBathgate Ghas gen store \nBeckett W H real estate \n\n*Bowers W F \n\n* Bowman J M \n*Brice Wm \n\n* Brewer Henry \nBrown M G \n\n*Brown Aron \n\n* Brown A J \nBrown H S \nBurns Mary \n\n^Buchanan T J \n*Buchanan Frank \nBurnett E E barber \n\n\n\nPOLO TAXPAYEliS -Continued \n\n\n\n^Burdick R W \n*Burdick F M \n\nGrouse J \nCain James* \nCawthon America \n*Carlile Frank \n*Carlile Orin \n*Carr Sherman \nCarr Robert \nCarr Alonzo \nCarr B F physician \n*Carrol Mary J \n*C\'arrol Henrv \n*C^arrol T J \n*Cleveng-er J M \n*Cates W M ^ \nChapson C S \nClark C W \nClark G W painter \n*Clark D C \n*Clark Willis \n*Clark E S \n*Cleven^\'er C H \n*Carlisle Wm \n*Crowley T M \nCook Sam F \nCanlaw Samuel \nCoen J W meat market \nCowley A A hdw \nCox J A blacksmith \nCrouse P L merchant \n*Crawford J T \n^Craven T A \n*Crowlev Levi \n\n\n\n*Dickson Thos H \nDickson G H merchant \n**Divinia W C \n\nDodge R K physician \n*Dorkins John \n*Dovvning G W \n\nEUenberg-er A J* \nEllenberger J H* \n*Ellenberg-er J E \n*Elienberg-er H E \n*Ellenberg-er J R \n*Elliott G N Judge Co Court \n\nW Dist \n*EL-kelb9rry O E \n*Emberton J L \n*Estes Wm \n*Estes James \nEarly Geo livery \n\nFoster J D* \nFoster John* \n^Fairbanks M K \n^Flint M E \n\nFlint Elizabeth \n\nFoster James plasterer \n*Frazier C E \n^Fowler E M \n*Fowler F D \n*Fowler O- \n*Fovvler E G \n*Fo\\vler Wm \n^Fowler M R \n*Fort Georg-e \n\nFrazier Joseph dentist \n\n\n\nDixon JoVj* \nDixon Sam^ \n*Davis J H \nDavis H V \nDavis J M lumber \nDavis W T lumber \n"Dennis Herbert \nDickenson Henry \n\n\n\nGarrett W A* \nGilbert OR \nGoodson I N \n*Gilbv John \n*Gilby G H \n^Gentry James \n*Gentry Chas \n*Green D R \n\n\n\nPOLO TAXPAYERS\xe2\x80\x94 Continued \n\n\n\nGrimes H C \n\n\n\nHickman C A* \nHardman J B* \n*Hardman S B \n*Hardman D B \n*Hardman V D \n*Harlow E T \n*Harlow J S \n*Havter John G \n\nHayter T B carpenter \n\nHaworth H S \n*Henry W L \n*Hartpence A \n*Hickman Sam \n*Henry J C \n\nHendren J H \n\nHendren J hotel \n*Hemry Kate B \n^Henderson W H \n\nHemry Elizabeth \n\n*Hendricks Jake \n\n*Hendricks John \n\nHig-^ins D A Vet \n\n*Howell Chas \n\n* Howell Gary \n\n*Howell J F \n\n*Hively E E \n\n*Hively Edgar \n\n*Hicknian John \n\n*Hendricks Will \n\n*ffiatt W F \n\n^Hiatt John \n\n*Hill Virgil \n\n*Hill D W \nHines Mrs Jennie \n\n*Hazelton B D \n\n*Hocklander D H \nHolman James \nHopkins G G merchant \n\n^Hickman Gatharine \n\n*Hickman Serena \n\n*Hunter J T \nHudson G T \nHudson G P life ins \n\n\n\nHudson E H \n\n*Hunt W W \n\n*Hunt John \nHunt Wm druggist \nHyder M E carpenter \n\n*Hickman John \n\n*Houghton G W \n\nIreland Roy * \nIreland Fred * \n^Ireland T S \n^Ireland W H \n\nJones W R* \nJones John* W \n*Jones Geo F \n\n* J ones Solomon \nJones Mrs T A \nJones G N editor New? In the vicinity of Bra\\^mer now, land \nfrequently sells. for from $75 to $100 per acre and there is \nperhaps no land within a radius of 10 miles that can be \nbought for $40 per acre. \n\nMr Steenrod, now a mail of perhaps 70 years of age, is \nyet living in his farm house which is located in the center \nof Braymer. \n\nBraymer is surrounded by a very fertile section of \ncountry and has a large territory to draw from and has a \nmarvelous trade and ships more stock than any town on \nthe Milwaukee Railroad between Ottumwaand Kansas City. \nIt has two or three of the largest stocks of goods and many \nof the most enterprising business men to be found in the \ncounty. \n\nill^^^Popuhition is KHK). instead of 15(H) as Kiven above which Is a typo- \ngraphical cnor. \n\n\n\nA brick and tile plant is operated by Wm McCubbin and \nis taxed to its utmost capacity and yet is not able to fill all \norders coming in and is compelled to ship from other points. \n\nA broom factory is also among" its enterprises and is \noperated by Mr Hewitt which has received a large local \nand foreign patronage. \n\nTwo newspapers are published here. The Braymer Bee \nby C. P. Dorsey, is an independent weekly, having a cir- \nculation of over a thousand. The Comet is edited by C. K. \nFleming and is a Republican weekly newspaper having a \ncirculation of about nine hundred. These papers receive a \nliberal patronage of the business men and are good exam- \nples of a thrifty country weekly. \n\nThere are two telephone exchanges, which is a very un- \nfortunate condition, as it works a hardship on the merchants \nand business men generally, who are compelled to have both \nphones. \n\nVitrified brick walks have the preference in Braymer, \nalthoug\'h there are many nice granitoid walks, while the pre- \nvailing street crossing is of wood. \n\nBraymer seemingly lacks public enterprise, due perhaps \nto the fact that its business men are engrossed in individual \nbusiness affairs and enjoying a large degree of prosperity \nand do not take the time to consider the public enterprise \nbecause of pressing individual business. \n\nOf course the fact must be taken into consideration that \nBraymer has sprung into existence in the past twenty years \nand has not developed as other towns of like size but older \nin years. \n\nThe people are hospitable. Men, women and children \ngreet the stranger on the street much the same as they do \nan acquaintance, a peculiarity that makes him feel at home \nand compels a comparison between Braymerites and the in- \nhabitants of other towns, in which comparison Braymer \ndoes not suffer. \n\nThere are two banks located here and have a very sat- \nisfactory business in the banking line. These are the First \nNational Bank and the Bank of Braymer. \n\n\n\nThe Bank of Bra ymer was org^anized in 1887 and m \n1888, S. F. Faraar, the present cashier, became identified \nwith it and has since conducted its affairs as cashier. This \nbank has never failed to pay its semi-annual dividend and \nhas enjoyed a good business and the confidence of the peo- \nple. Its stockholders and directors, a list of whom may be \nseen in the advertising columns, are men of influence and \ntheir personalities add great strength to this bank. \n\nMr. J. R. Dalbey, the President, is also engaged in the \nmercantile business and has one of the largest stocks of \ng"eneral merchandise in the county and is one of the most \nsubstantial and influential business men of Braymer. \n\nThe bank is well equipped with two vaults, protected by \nelectrical appliances, steel lining and burglar alarms and \nis a member of the American and the Missouri Bankers \nAssociation. It has a good corps of officers and assistants. \nMr. Farrar is a popular and efficient cashier. \n\nBraymer is a thriving citj of the fourth class, is rap- \nidly extending its limits and shows evidences of greater \ng-rowth. \n\nThe Mowder addition has been lately platted and is \nthe largest addition that ever was laid out to any town in \nthe county, containing over forty-five acres, composed of \ntwelve blocKs with an aggregation of 143 lots of various \ndimensions. It lies to the north of Braymer and the lay \nof the land is such as to make beautiful building places \nand already a large number of lots have been sold. These \nfine lots aa^e being sold at very reasonable prices-. \n\nMr. C. L. Mowder who platted this addition, is also \npostmaster and exerts a strong influence for the upbuilding \nof Braymer. He has taken great interest in political af- \nfairs and, m 1895 was Reading Clerk of the House, being \nthe first Republican to hold that position since reconstruc- \ntion days. He was one of the two delegates from this dis- \ntrict to the National Convention that nominated McKinley \nand Roosevelt and was the Missouri member of the Com- \nmittee on Credentials, \n\n\n\nMr. Mowder lias also been a very successiul newspaper \nman, having edited The Comet ior several years and hav- \ning- been connected with several i ther papers from time to \ntime. \n\n\n\n\nBRAY^IER SCHOOL BUILDING \n\n\n\nBraymer claims for its schools the highest standard of \nexcellence of any in the county. Seven teachers are era- \nployed and about 350 pupils are in attendance of whom 75 \nare from neio-hboring- districts, who come here to take ad- \nvantag"e of the superior facilities oti\'ered by this school. \nTwo years ag-o a new building- was completed at a cost of \n$14,000 of which a cut appears herein. \n\nIn hotel accommodations, Braymer excels any other \ntown in the county, having the best equipped hotel. The \nFranklin, of which a cut is here given, is a four-story \nbrick, steam heated and lighted by electricity. Hot and \ncold water apparatus is being installed and the house is \nwell furnished throughout, \n\nMr. J. R. Wilson, the present proprietor, has demon- \nstrated his ability to care for the hungry wayfarer and has \n\n\n\nmade a successful landlord. This is one Of the best hotels \nin this section of the country, Mr. Wilson has been in \ncharge about four years. \n\n\n\n^. \n\n\n\n\nW-A^- \n\n\n-^^ \n\n\nW^ \n\n\n^\xe2\x96\xa0"""" ^S \n\n\nmm \n\n: r\' , \\ \n\n\n1 \n\n\nu^B^. \n\n\nE \n\n\n\n\nm^a^\'i-\'^f^ \n\n\n\nTHE FRANKLIN HOTEL \n\nBraymer is the home of one of the popular young at- \ntorneys of the county, Mr. L. R. Kautz, who is a Caldwell \ncounty boy, having been reared in the vicinity of Hamil- \nton. He is a graduate of Kidder Institute and has also \ntaken the law course at Columbia. He has an in increas- \ning legal business, represents some of the best insurance \ncompanies, makes collections, loans, etc., and at present \nhe is city attorney. \n\nIn connection with the advance of Braymer is given a \ncut of S. M. Coffinan (the Braymer Jeweler and Optician) \nand a model engine built by him. This model was built \nfor the J. I. Case Thrashing Machine Co., of Racine, Wis., \nand delivered in February of this vear. This is the largest \n\n\n\ncompany of its kind in the world and has just completed a \nnew office building that is claimed to bs the finest in the \nUnited States, and this model is now on display in its win- \ndows and is a remarkable piece of mechanism. It repre- \nsents their twelve horse power traction engine, and is a \nperfect working model of the same, made on a scal\'e of one \n\n\n\n\n\n\nS. E. COFFMAN AXD MODEL EXCUXE BUILT BY HIM \n\nand a half inches to the foot, or one-eighth size. It is \ncompos9d of 3150 parts, there being 882 pieces in the two \nrear wheels and 41 pieces in the differential gearing It \nhas 30 flues, water and steam guage, governor and safety \nvalve and whistle and is just as complete in every way as \nthe engine it represents. \n\n\n\nMr. Coffman has surmounted innumerable difficulties \nin this work, even making* most of the tools with which to \ndo the work. He takes especial deligiit in work that to the \nordinary mechanic seems impossible and no task is too dif- \nficult for him to attempt. He is an inventor of many labor \nsaving- devices and ranks among- the best in this kind of \nwork. He is now at work on a model separator for the \nsame company and will also build another engine. \n\n\n\n\nL. R. KAUTZ, BRAYMER \n\n\n\nThere are five churches in Braymer of which the Metho- \ndist Episcopal has much the strongest membership, having- \nabout 225 members. It owns a good brick church building- \n\n\n\nwhich will not long* suffice for this denoirination as it is \ntoo small for a church of this membership which is alive \nand growing\'. \xe2\x96\xa0 \n\nThe Baptists are next in point of numbers and 1 ave \nsomewhat more than 100 members and a very nice frame \nbuilding. \n\nThe United Brethern have a membership of fifty and a \nframe building-. \n\nThers are two Christian Churches, the original Antioch \nchurch becoming- divided on the question of an organ some \nlive years ag-o. Antioch was established in 1875, some \neig-ht years before the town was started and now has a \nmembership of about 40 and worship without the organ. \n\nThe other members organized into a church in 1901 and \nnow have about fifty members, a good frame building- and \nadd the melodious strains of the organ to their devotions. \n\nThe following- lodges are represented: \n\nBra vmer Lodge, No. 135 A. C. Petty, is \n74x120 feet, and has lately b-en eomplit?d at a cost of \n$13,000. \n\n\n\n\nE. C. PETTY BUILDING \n\n\n\nCowgiU\'s public schools employ four teachers but do \nnot have a very large attendance, ha ving on.y about 110 \npupils, but on the whole, the school is rather above the \naverage for a village of this size. The building is a large \nand commodious two-story brick and is practically a new \nbuilding. The school is fairly well sui)plied with maps, \ncharts, etc., and has also a small library. \n\n\n\nTlie town has one newspaper. The Cowoill Chief, edited \nand published by Geo. B. CowJey, but does not have a very \nextensive circulation. \n\nThe First National Bank is the only bank and is doino\' \na ^-ood business and is represented in the advertising- col- \numns herein. \n\n\n\n\n.J. D. ALLEN \n\nThis town is the home of J. D. Allen, a member of the \n(/aldwell County bar, and who is clerk and attorney for \nthe town. \n\nMr. Allen has been practicing- law for ten years past, \nhaving- read law with J. M. Davis & Son of Chillicothe, and \nlocated in Cowgill for the practice of his profession seven \nyears ago. He is a Missouriail, being- born and reared in \n\n\n\nLivingston county and educated in the country and high \nschools there. Has been identified with the interests of \nCowgill now several years and has had a marked degree of \nsuccess in his chosen profession. During- the past year and \na half he has not lost a case, which certainly speaks well \nof his ability as a lawyer. He has an extensive foreign \npractice. \n\n\n\n\nM. E. CHURCH, SOUTH \n\n\n\nCowg-ill is well supplied with churches, having five \nframe buildings owned by as many different denominations. \nThe Methodist Episcopal Church, South, is perhaps the \nbest frame church buildina\' in the county, being built a few \nyears ag-o at a cost of about $8,000, and is a very neat \n\n\n\nplace of worship. This denomination has a membership of \nabout 150, and is the strongest representsd at this place. \n\nThe Baptists have the next strong-est membership, \nwhich is perhaps about 100 members. \n\nThe Methodist Episcopal church have fifty members and \nthe Christians and Presbyterians have about the same \nnumber. \n\nilotii acco-nnolatioas are g-ood at Cowgill. The \nPJankington House is a well furnished hotel. The present \n\n\n\n\nPLANKERTON HOTEL AND FIRST NATIONAL BANK \n\nproprietor, J. M. Davidson, who has had charge of the \nhouse only about six months, but during that time has \ncarefully looked after the comfort of his patrons and has \ngiven very general satisfaction as a landlord. He has had \nseveral years experience before coming here. The build- \ning is lighted by a private gas light plant and is well loca- \nted and well patronized. \n\n\n\nThe postnja.ster of C>ow|j-ill, is\'A. F. McCray, who has \nfor his assistant, his daughter. Miss Merle McCray. Mr. \nMcCray was the first postmaster in the United States to be \nappointed by the McKinley administration and has render- \ned efficient service. He is also ons of the leading auction- \neers of north Missouri, and his son, Frank McCray, assists \nhim in this work. Last year their total sales aggregated \nthe sum of $157,820, and their services are always in demand. \n\nMr. McCray is a veteran of the civil war, and lost a limb \nin-ths s-erviC3 of his country. " Has b33n- a rasident of the- \ncounty many years and has the respect of the community in \nwhich he lives, enjoys a large accquaintance and is a genial \nand whole-souled gentleman. \n\nCowgill has uiany progressive business men who be- \nlieve in hustling and advertising as will appear by refer- \nence to the advertising columns. \n\nAmong the lodges represented here are the I O. E. Marquam in 184J). \nIt is yet without any town or villag-e org-anization, and, in \nfact, has little need of it, for its citizens are inclined to the \nways of peace and the arm of the law is seldom invoked \nfor the preservation of either life or property or to pre- \nserve th^ dig-nity of the state. \n\nThe land on which Mirabile is situated was entered by \nJohn Gregg-, a Mormon, in 1836, and three years later \nwhen he lefti^for Navoo, 111., the land was bought by Mr. \nMarquam who also purchased a stock of goods and a log- \nbuilding at Far West and removed them to the sight of the \nstore building no^ occupied by John H. Clark. This was \nknown as "Marquana^ Store" for some time, but other \nbuildings were soon built and, finally, Mr, Marquam plat- \nted and laid out the town and called it Mirabile, \n\n\n\nUntil the building of the Hannibal & St. Joseph K. K.. \nMirabile merchants hauled their goods from Camden, on \nthe Missouri and Mirabile became quite a trading point. \n\nDuring the war, Mirabile was thoroughly Union in \nsympathies, and it is said that nearly every able-bodied \nman did service.\' It was here that Capt. Johnson\'s and \nCapt. James\'s Home Guards were organized in 18(il. being \nthe first to organize in North Missouri. \n\n\n\n\nL. L. FROST \n\nMirabile was the scene of some stirring events during \nthe war. The Thrailkill raid in 1864, is perhaps the most \nnotable. Coming from Kingston where he had sacked the \ntown. Thrailkill })roceeded to plunder Mirabile. The stoip \n\n\n\nof Dr. W. H. Crawford was entered and nearly everythino- \ntaken or destroyed. The safe was opened where $4,7H5 in \ncash was found, over half of which was money belongin^^- \nto different parties who had left it there for safe keepin;^-. \nCrawford\'s loss was $2,700 cash and $2,300 in g\'oods. \nOther stores were pillaged and many lost considerable \nin goods and cash as a result of this raid while some were \ntaken prisoners and came near losing their lives. \n\nAt present, Mirabile has three general stores, a drug \nstore, hotel, mill, blacksmith shop and harness shop and \nseveral nice residences. \n\nThe Mirabile school employs one teacher, has about \n40 pupils in attendance and is housed in a commodious \nframe building. \n\nThere are two frame church buildings, the one belong- \ning to the Presbyterians and the other to the M. P. and \nBaptist congregations. The M. P. denomination is the \nstronger here, having abont 65 members. \n\nThe I. O. O. F. is the strongest lodge with a member- \nship of 80. \xe2\x96\xa0 T. O.
