OATH L ° f t h e A - P A - P u t s one hand on the Bible and the other on the Crucifix and swears this OATH "I do most solemnly promise and swear, that I will not allow any one a member of the Roman Catholic Church to become a member of this Order, I knowing him to be such; that I will use my influence to pro- mote the interests of all Protestants, everywhere in the world; that I will not employ a Roman Catholic m any capacity, if I can secure the services of a Pro- testant; that I will not aid in the building or in main- taining, by my resources any Roman Catholic Church or institution of their sect or creed whatsoever, but will do all m my power to retard and break down the power of the Pope; that I will not enter into any agreement with a Roman Catholic to strike or create a disturbance whereby the Roman Catholic employes may undermine and substitute the Protestants ; that m all grievances I will seek only Protestants and counsel with them to the exclusion of all Roman Catholics and will not make known to them anything of any nature matured at such conference ; that I will not countenance the nomination in any caucus or convention, of a Rofnan Catholic, for any office in the gift of the American people, and that I will not vote for nor counsel others to vote for any Roman Catho- lic, but will vote only for a Protestant; that I will en- deavor at all times to place the political positions of this Government in the hands of Protestants. (Re- peat.) To all of which I do most solemnly promise and swear, so help me God. Amen." The Principles of the A. P A. , Every member of the A. P. A. puts Ms name to the following SCROLIJ " I hereby declare that I am a firm believer in the Deity, I am not a member of the Roman Catholic Church, nor have I any sympathy with Roman Catholicism; that in my opinion no Roman Catholic should be allowed any part or parcel in the control or occupy any position in our public schools; on the contrary, I realize that the institutions of our coun- try are in danger from the machinations of the Church of Rome. I believe that only by the removal of Roman Catholics from offices of public trust can justice, right, and true American sentiment be fully subserved and that by the concerted , and continued efforts of the lovers of American liberty only can such be consummated and continued. I pledge my- self to defend the Government of the United States and of the State in which I reside, against invasion, disorder, treason, rebellion, either by ecclesiastical, local or foreign foe, and against the usurpation of temporal or spiritual power whereby men become slaves to Party, and the Roman Church I I am will- ing to bind myself by a vow sacred and inviolable.
