Carlisle , July 30 , 1823 . Sir, The Committee of Correspondence of Cumberland county have the pleasure of acknowledging the receipt of several communications from the Committees in the different sections of the State.' — They are gratified to see the zeal which animates our democratic brethren, in a contest which is really and truly to decide the ascendancy of Federalism or Democracy, for the ensuing three, or perhaps, nine years; and, they are well aware, how important concert and correct information are, to ensure the success of the democratic candidate. Our opponents cannot fully disguise their designs : If Mr. Gregg should succeed, what other change than an increased federal influence can be expected in the present Cabinet? And, is there a Democrat that would support a puppet administration, the leading-strings of which will be managed by our old opponents ? The Federal party in our county are active against us : Dr. William Sharp and Jacob Flaldeman, the delegates from this county to the Lewistown convention, are known Federalists ; and the federal paper in this town, is the only one in the county that supports the pretensions of Mr. Gregg. The majority of the Catholics here will give their active support to Mr. Gregg ; although every effort has been made to explain to them, (what they cannot mistake) the real bearing of the bill of last session. Their votes will not exceed eighty or ninety in the county ; and on the other hand, most of the Oldschool have returned to their own party—and we think we may safely estimate Mr. Shulz’s ma- jority in the county, from seven to eight hundred. We count more on short forcible appeals to the Germans and Irish, than long addresses. They cannot have forgotten the fostering hand we held out to them in every trial ; and an appeal to their gratitude cannot be made in vain. Among the devices resorted to in the election of 1820, a spurious Confession of David Lewis, the robber, was circulated with singular effect in this county; a page of the manuscript, in the hand- writing of the Auditor-General, is in possession of one of our printers, and has been seen by some of this committee. Such subterfuges, when properly exposed, will put the people on their guard against similar attempts, DAVID NEVIN, HENR Y FORD, JAMES HAMILTON. \ JOHN WORMLEY, ANDRE IV MITCHELL , WILLIAM R.
